Abstract:As part of efforts to improve the quality of mathematics' teaching and evaluation, we examined the focus of math teachers' considerations in evaluating students’ achievements, as well as the links between these focuses, regarding differences between students and the validity and reliability of assessment methods and examinations. Based on the categorization of issues that concern math teachers while assessing their students, a self-report quantitative-questionnaire was constructed and validated. The questionnaire included three foci of consideration for mathematics evaluation: considerations regarding evaluating learners, considerations regarding the choice of assessment methods, and assessment considerations that are unique to mathematics; positive, high, and significant were found between them. The main conclusion is that math teachers aspire to evaluate their students on the basis of a broad picture, that considers the needs of students studying mathematics as a unique discipline, the available assessment methods and their ability to adapt them to a valid and reliable assessment in mathematics, and the overall need to focus on the challenges and difficulties which are unique to assessing the discipline of mathematics. The findings also strengthen the claim that assessing math learning has unique considerations that are distinguished from assessment considerations in other disciplines.

Abstract:This research aims to find and describe kinds of questions proposed by prospective students teacher in teaching mathematics practice. The mathematics learning is an activity undertaken by teachers, students and learning environments in learning the mathematical material. The mathematics learning, in this case, is the learning of concept, principal, procedures, and factual mathematics. This research is qualitative research, and the subject is 7th semester students of mathematics at Madura University who was doing their field experience practice. In this study, five prospective students teacher practiced their teaching skill for more less 3-4 meetings. The data was collected from video recording an interview, then the data was analyzed, and triangulation was done. Triangulation result would be used as initial conclusion before the final one is taken. The result of this study is, brainstorm questions emphasized more to the concept understanding, procedures, mathematics principals. Divergent questions are questions which stressing more to the concept of understanding, procedures, and mathematics principle and factual. Convergent questions, brainstorm questions are questions which emphasizing on the understanding of mathematics factual. This focal question is more about justifying or giving students choices in answering questions. This type of question to inquire about procedures and mathematical facts to choose the right one.

Abstract:Writing and communication are essential skills for success in the workplace or in graduate school, yet writing and communication are often the last thing that instructors think about incorporating into a mathematics course. A mathematical modeling course provides a natural environment for writing assignments. This article is an analysis of the type of writing assigned in my mathematical modeling course. Where the assignments are unusual, they are thoroughly described and I share my experiences on what worked well and what was not as successful. Where the assignments are more traditional, I offer an analysis of problems and pitfalls in teaching writing. Formal project reports for the class teach students how to write scientific articles. Unusual reflective assignments help students integrate their learning and apply it in new contexts.

Abstract:Students are less able to comprehend and resolve mathematical issues as a result of reading mathematical content. Additionally, deductive mathematics learning necessitates the use of skills in mathematics instruction by the teacher to ensure that students comprehend and correctly answer mathematical issues. The teaching methods of teachers when students are learning are thus the subject of some research. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mathematics instructors' delivery methods in Masohi City's junior high schools. The participants in this study were junior high school mathematics teachers in Masohi City, and they were chosen based on their educational background, length of employment, attendance at workshops, and/or other relevant strategies or the use of instructional materials. The mathematics teacher's teaching methodology is the subject of the study. A quantitative descriptive research methodology was adopted, in which the amount of data collected was stated in detail. Observation, questionnaires, and interviews with research participants are other methods used in data collection. When the research was being done, observations were made to watch what was happening. The purpose of the questionnaire is to determine how effectively the chosen teaching method can encourage students to use mathematics in their classwork, homework, and other performances. The interview was done to ascertain the accuracy of the questionnaire responses and to serve as a discussion starter for the results that would be discussed later.

Abstract:This study was designed to determine undergraduate students’ perception in a flipped Applied Mathematics classroom. A survey research design was employed to measure students’ responses after a successful seven-week deployment of the flipped model of instruction delivery at a University in North Central Nigeria. An intact class of 32 students was used for the study, out of which 21 students returned the adopted Feedback Questionnaire on Flipped Classroom Activity. Analysis of the results of the study shows a positive level of students’ perception (grand mean = 2.765) and an enriched learning experience in terms of curiosity, engagement and enlightenment. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that teachers at all levels of mathematics education should always seek instructional approaches that are student-driven like the flipped classroom to sustain interest and improve academic performance.

Abstract:Central to the preparation of mathematics teachers is their preparation in mathematics. Consequently, a careful examination of the nature of teachers’ mathematical experiences is warranted. There are many factors that influence the teaching of mathematics including the historical development of mathematics with its inherent formalism. This linkage will be explored along with a review of research on teachers’ beliefs and knowledge of mathematics as beliefs and knowledge relate to teacher change. We conclude that this research suggests that teachers are not always well positioned to adopt a more reform- and process-oriented teaching style that moves beyond the usual formalism in the teaching of mathematics. Grounded in this review of the literature, three principles for teaching preservice teachers mathematics will be presented. These principles are: (a) treating mathematics as a pluralistic subject, (b) providing teachers with opportunities to understand and reflect on school mathematics, and (c) enabling teachers to experience mathematics as a process. We will discuss and illustrate these principles using a specific mathematical problem solved from a variety of perspectives.
Reflection on Training, Experience, and Introductory Statistics: A Mini-Survey of Tertiary Level Statistics Instructors

Abstract:Instructors of statistics who teach non-statistics majors possess varied academic backgrounds, and hence it is reasonable to expect variability in their content knowledge, and pedagogical approach. The aim of this study was to determine the specific course(s) that contributed mostly to instructors' understanding of statistics. Courses reported were described as advanced or graduate level, and classified as application-based, math, multivariate, probability, and research. The majority, 9 (56%) attributed their understanding of statistics to either an application-based or research course, and of those, 7 (44%) reported negative feelings about their introductory courses. These findings underscore the importance of authentic activities, and constructivist pedagogy toward facilitating statistical literacy. Research is needed to determine the effect of instructors' academic preparation on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices.

Abstract:This chapter is based on work done for more than 40 years at Université Laval, in mathematics courses for future secondary-level mathematics teachers. This work was initiated by Bernard Hodgson, in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. It has been influenced by the long-time involvement of Bernard with the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG) and his subsequent involvement at the international level in mathematics education. Since joining the Department in 1995, I have been responsible for one of these courses, which places a strong emphasis on problem solving, using as an important resource Thinking Mathematically (Mason et al., Thinking Mathematically. Addison-Wesley, 1982). This chapter is based on this course, entitled “Mathématiques fondamentales pour l’enseignement” (Fundamental Mathematics for Teaching).The description of the course and of its evolution is mostly a personal narrative, as I try to convey how the work done with preservice teachers has been enriched by mathematics education and by conversations with mathematics education researchers and with mathematicians who share a strong interest in mathematics education. The main objectives of the course and of its problem-solving component draw from the idea of doing mathematics. This has major implications about the manner in which we work in class, as we are trying to establish cultural norms which are conductive to an authentic engagement with mathematics.
A Teacher Questioning Activity: The Use of Oral Open-ended Questions in Mathematics Classroom

Abstract:This research aims to analyse a teacher’s questioning activity using oral open-ended questions in the mathematics classroom in three phases: the teacher asks open-ended mathematics questions orally, students answer the questions, and the teacher responds to the answers. This research involved a mathematics teacher and twenty-three year 7 students (aged eleven-twelve years old) in a secondary school in the UK. The samples were chosen using purposive sampling technique. The data collection technique used was three 45-minute-long lesson observations using field notes and audio-recordings. The notes and the transcript of the recording were analysed to find the answers for three research questions. The results showed that the teacher posed any kind of questions orally. The teacher asked two or three oral open-ended questions. Students answered those questions with different answer. The answers were not only correct, but also incorrect and incomplete. After getting an answer, the teacher responded by asking follow-up questions both closed and open-ended.

Abstract:Background: Teacher practices when teaching mathematics are supported by their beliefs on how this subject should be approached. This has an impact on the learning of students who generally perceive mathematics as an incomprehensible mechanical activity in which a series of algorithms must be followed to obtain a solution. Therefore, the following questions arise: What are the beliefs of mathematics teachers regarding the teaching process? Which methodologies do they use in the classroom? Objective: The objective was to analyse the beliefs of elementary school teachers and secondary school mathematics teachers during the teaching process. Design: The study used a descriptive quantitative approach. Setting and participants: The sample consisted of 100 elementary school teachers and secondary school mathematics teachers from three regions in Chile. Data collection and analysis: Due to the Covid-19 health crisis, Google Drive was used to send a Likert questionnaire to each of the study participants. The information was processed and quantitatively analysed with the SPPS 25.0 statistical software. Results: Statistically significant differences were found based on specialisation, place of work, school administration, and gender of the participants. Conclusions: Teachers considered that knowing, learning, and applying mathematical knowledge was possible through rote and routine activities. In addition, teachers with 5 to 8 years of experience believed that mathematics develops problem-solving skills.

Abstract:"I am an industrial mathematician." When asked to identify my profession or academic field of study, this is the most concise answer I can provide. However, this seemingly straightforward statement is commonly greeted by a blank stare or an uncomfortable silence, regardless of whether I am speaking to a fellow mathematician or a non-mathematician. I usually follow up with the clarification: "I am an applied mathematician who derives much of my inspiration from the study of industrial problems that I encounter through collaborations with companies." This dispels some confusion, but unfortunately still leaves a great deal open to interpretation owing to the vagueness of the words mathematics, industry and company, each of which covers an extremely broad range of scientific or socio-economic activity. To those academics who actually work in the field of industrial mathematics (and whose "perspective" referred to in the title is the focus of this article) this ambiguity is familiar and untroubling. However, for anyone less acquainted with the work of industrial mathematicians, some clarification is desirable especially for anyone who might be considering entering the field. This essay therefore aims to shed light upon the nature of research being done at the interface between mathematics and industry, paying particular attention to the following questions: What is industrial mathematics? Where is industrial mathematics? How does one do industrial mathematics? Why (or more precisely, what value is there in doing) industrial mathematics? I will attempt to answer these questions by means of several case studies drawn from my own experience in tackling mathematical problems from industry.

Abstract:Asking learners (especially children) questions is so strongly embedded in our culture that most adults do it when in the company of children, and most children do it when playing ‘school’. Furthermore, in these types of interactions the adult usually knows the answer and most children quickly work out that this is the case. Questions are seen as some sort of testing process, through which learners supposedly learn. An extreme form is the cloze technique of pausing and expecting students to fill in the missing word. Adults are more likely to ask each other questions that are actually seeking information, genuinely enquiring. Where do questions come from? How can we use them effectively in classrooms? How can we stimulate learners to ask their own questions? These issues are addressed through a number of conjectures which cannot be proved, merely tested out in your own experience.

Abstract:<p>This paper describes theoretical design principles emerging from the development of tasks for standard undergraduate mathematics courses that address applications to teaching secondary mathematics. While researchers recognize that mathematical knowledge for teaching is a form of applied mathematics, applications to teaching remain largely absent from curriculum resources for courses for mathematics majors. We developed various materials that contain applications to teaching that have been integrated into four standard undergraduate mathematics courses. Three primary principles influenced the design of the tasks that prepare future teachers to learn and apply mathematics in a manner central to their future work. Additionally, this paper provides guidance for instructors desiring to develop or implement similar applications. The process of developing these tasks underscores the importance of key features regarding the roles of human beings in the tasks, the intentional focus on advanced content connected to school mathematics, and the integration of active engagement strategies.</p>

Abstract:With the increase in the number of students in our tertiary institutions coupled with the number of courses offered in the various universities, the management of examination processes has become more complex in terms of resources, time and manpower. This has resulted to the rapid adoption of a computerized means of conducting examinations instead of the traditional pen and paper. However, this computer-based technique currently used in our tertiary institutions in assessing students’ examination handles only the multiple choice questions (MCQ). This paper therefore is aimed at designing and implementing a simplified algorithm that assesses subjective (descriptive) type questions. Keyword and synonym matching techniques were used as the method for creating the simplified algorithm for the assessment of the subjective answers. The algorithm was designed using the Unified Modeling Language. The application was built in the NetBeans IDE version 8.2 with Java as the main programming language. Spring Boot Framework with Thymeleaf View Engine was used as the Web development Framework. MySQL was used for the database while HTML, CSS and JavaScript were used for building the web page interface. For the synonyms, grammar and spell checking, Merriam-Webster Dictionary API and Language Tool API were used. A prototype system was consequently developed, tested and various results shown.

Abstract:The number of students pursuing undergraduate degrees in mathematics is decreasing. Research reveals students who pursue mathematics majors complained about inadequate high school preparation in terms of disciplinary content or depth, conceptual grasp, or study skills. Unfortunately, the decrease in the number of students studying advanced mathematics occurs at a time when the world's technological drive demands students have improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This paper suggests one solution for this alarming problem: a high school class offered to seniors as a means of preparing them for the rigours of college level mathematics while simultaneously increasing their motivation to pursue advanced mathematics. This paper provides the course scope, goals, structure, and analysis of how the curriculum aligns to professional standards. Although this programme has not currently been field tested, the authors are convinced of its impact. Once implemented and properly taught, the proposed Survey of Advanced Mathematics Topics class could increase the quantity and quality of students pursuing studies in mathematics at the university level.

Abstract:This paper reports on a study about how the mathematics textbook was perceived and used by the teacher in the context of a calculus part of a basic mathematics course for first-year engineering students. The focus was on the teacher's choices and the use of definitions, examples and exercises in a sequence of lectures introducing the derivative concept. Data were collected during observations of lectures and an interview, and informal talks with the teacher. The introduction and the treatment of the derivative as proposed by the teacher during the lectures were analysed in relation to the results of the content text analysis of the textbook. The teacher's decisions were explored through the lens of intended learning goals for engineering students taking the mathematics course. The results showed that the sequence of concepts and the formal introduction of the derivative as proposed by the textbook were closely followed during the lectures. The examples and tasks offered to the students focused strongly on procedural knowledge. Although the textbook proposes both examples and exercises that promote conceptual knowledge, these opportunities were not fully utilized during the observed lectures. Possible reasons for the teacher's choices and decisions are discussed.

Abstract:This paper examines three elementary school mathematics textbooks (one textbook from each of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) to determine to what extent these textbooks present questions with multiple outcomes and multiple solution methods. Document analysis as a qualitative research method is adopted. The findings reveal that only 8% of all three textbook questions have multiple correct outcomes and 92% of them have only one correct outcome. Further analysis of questions with multiple outcomes shows that the majority of these questions have limited correct outcomes rather than limitless ones. It is also found that only 6.2% all worked-examples are solved through different solution methods. Given that textbooks are often considered to have influences on both teaching and learning, these findings present important implications for mathematics learning and teaching. The issues of student creativity and higher-order thinking are especially discussed as they are closely associated with the use of questions with multiple solution methods and outcomes.
