Abstract:As part of efforts to improve the quality of mathematics' teaching and evaluation, we examined the focus of math teachers' considerations in evaluating students’ achievements, as well as the links between these focuses, regarding differences between students and the validity and reliability of assessment methods and examinations. Based on the categorization of issues that concern math teachers while assessing their students, a self-report quantitative-questionnaire was constructed and validated. The questionnaire included three foci of consideration for mathematics evaluation: considerations regarding evaluating learners, considerations regarding the choice of assessment methods, and assessment considerations that are unique to mathematics; positive, high, and significant were found between them. The main conclusion is that math teachers aspire to evaluate their students on the basis of a broad picture, that considers the needs of students studying mathematics as a unique discipline, the available assessment methods and their ability to adapt them to a valid and reliable assessment in mathematics, and the overall need to focus on the challenges and difficulties which are unique to assessing the discipline of mathematics. The findings also strengthen the claim that assessing math learning has unique considerations that are distinguished from assessment considerations in other disciplines.
Correlates of Ghanaian Teachers' Understanding of Mathematics Strands and Cognitive Domains in Basic Education Certificate Examination

Abstract:In the field of mathematics education, it is essential to grasp teachers' competence in recognizing cognitive domains, as it plays a pivotal role in elevating teaching methods, evaluation techniques, and ultimately enhancing student academic achievements. This study examines the proficiency of basic school teachers in Ghana in identifying the cognitive domains of mathematics questions using Bloom's Taxonomy. A sample of 338 teachers from across the regions of Ghana participated, selected through random sampling. Teachers were assessed using a set of 50 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) past questions spanning a decade (2010-2022), covering Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Data, and Number strands. Participants categorized each question according to Bloom's Taxonomy. Poisson regression analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were employed to evaluate teachers' proficiency. Results indicated a statistically significant intercept term, suggesting a baseline performance level among teachers. Significant interaction effects between demographic and professional characteristics (Class:category, Class:SchTyp, TeachEx:SchTyp, TeachEx:Domain, and the main effect of Domain) influenced teachers' ability to identify mathematics domains. Teaching experience positively influenced scores, while school type had a negative impact. The model demonstrated high discriminatory power and strong predictive performance with an AUC of 0.996. Dependency analysis revealed that understanding Bloom's taxonomy domains influenced the identification of mathematics strands. Primary level teachers’ consistently demonstrated higher proficiency compared to Junior High School (JHS) level teachers. Additionally, experienced and qualified professionals performed better than pupil teachers. These findings highlight the importance of targeted interventions and professional development programs to enhance teachers' competency in identifying mathematics domains, thus improving mathematics education in Ghana.

Abstract:Aware of the various issues involved in assessing learning, but also of the difficulties encountered in classroom practice of this pedagogical act, we set out in this article to explore and analyze the assessment practices of secondary school mathematics teachers and the conceptions they underlie. The study was conducted from a systemic perspective. We therefore targeted three aspects in our study: the conceptual, the institutional, and the docimological. Analysis of the attitudes declared by a random sample of mathematics teachers enabled us to confirm that pedagogical, and in particular cognitive, issues do not represent a priority for them in assessment practices. They focus more on the organizational aspect of examinations, with a remarkable lack of concern for docimological considerations to give credibility to the assessments carried out.

Abstract:Construct: Authors examined the use of multiple choice question tests in assessment of undergraduate students, and made a docimological evaluation of the quality of the tests. Background: Moroccan universities are gradually integrating multiple-choice questions as a method of evaluation. At the Faculty of Medicine of Marrakech-Morocco, this type of test is used to assess medical students’ knowledge, in addition to easier large-scale assessments and automatic correction, test reliability and validity are major qualities of multiple-choice questions, their important disadvantage is that they are difficult and time-consuming to construct. The aim this study was to report the authors experience in assessment of undergraduate students and to make a docimological evaluation of the quality of the tests.Approach: we conducted an observational study on tests used for the assessment of semiology and pathology tests in urology and nephrology, during 10 years (2007 to 2017), we performed the analysis of the different criteria for writing an assay. Abstract:This article deals with peer-assessment in the context of higher education teaching in mathematics, and examines the nature of student activity when assessing work produced by peers. After an overview of research on peer assessment, we propose an experiment with students in a specific post-secondary scientific class, and analyze the activity of the students involved. Our analyses are based on a priori analyses of the proposed tasks and tools from research on students personal mathematical work. We base on written notes of assessments, observations of pairs in assessment situations, and answers to a questionnaire on the perception of their activity. We have identified some specific student activities during the peer assessment process, in particular related to the analysis and correction of proofs, but also to the awareness of the issues associated with evaluation. This enables us to argue for the potential of peer assessment in higher mathematics education.
The role of attitudinal factors in mathematical on-line assessments: a study of undergraduate STEM students

Abstract:This study explores student attitudes to the use of substantive on-line assessments that require mathematical answers. Since there is limited guidance available for their use in a university setting, our goal is to learn what are the important aspects in student acceptance of e-assessments that support learning of mathematical subjects in higher education. To that end we analyse the effects of a variety of attitudinal factors towards such assessments amongst a cross-section of first year students in an English university, using a detailed questionnaire. These students were all previously exposed to on-line assessments containing substantial mathematical work, including testing of and feedback on the algebraic structure of their answers, based on identifiable misconceptions underlying these answers. Since students received highly tailored feedback, the expectation was that the usefulness of this feedback would be the key driver in their usage of educational technology. The results indeed suggest that students find on-line feedback more enjoyable and useful than conventional feedback, but enjoyment and attitude are the two most important factors.

Abstract:The results of comparative studies of United States students’ mathematical achievement (McKnight et al., 1987; Crosswhite et al., 1987; Dossey et al., 1988) in national and international arenas have heightened the United States’ awareness of the importance of mathematics as a tool for stability in an era of rapid change (MSEB, 1989a, 1989b; Adelman & Alsalam, 1988; Johnson & Packard, 1987). At the same time, mathematics educators and others set out to describe how the United States’ society might measure both the growth of mathematical ability in individuals and in the society itself (Alexander & James, 1988; Kulm, 1990; Raizen & Jones, 1985; Resnick, 1987; NCTM, 1989). These attempts also brought with them a number of reports dealing with the dangers of testing and the role testing might play in stratifying society (National Commission on Test and Public Policy, 1990).

Abstract:Assessment plays a crucial role in improving teachers’ classroom practices. The information gathered from the assessment informs teachers about students’ learning progress. Multiple-choice items (MCIs) as one of the assessment tools have been used to assess mathematical skills at different educational levels in the world, including Tanzania. However, there has been an outcry that some pupils pass the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and join secondary education without mastering basic mathematical skills. This study aimed to (i) determine the extent to which MCIs and Short Answer Items (SAIs) assess students’ mathematical skills and (ii) determine whether there is a difference in assessing students’ mathematical skills in secondary schools between MCIs and SAIs. 387 Form I students from four public and two private secondary schools participated in the study. Data were collected using two equivalent mathematics tests and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that MCIs had a high mean score of 30.44, and SAIs had a relatively low mean score of 26.2028. The study further found that only 7.49% of students-maintained scores in MCIs and SAIs, while 81.65% and 10.85% had scored higher in MCIs and SAIs, respectively. The study recommends that an effective assessment tool should contain more SAIs than MCIs due to their relative advantage in assessing students’ mathematical skills as opposed to MCIs

Abstract:Abstract Knowledge assessments in undergraduate STEM education commonly evaluate response correctness to determine learner proficiency. However, simultaneous evaluation of learner metacognition more accurately assesses the multiple dimensions of knowledge and has been shown to increase assessment validity and reliability. Motivation for researching these multidimensional methods has primarily been to identify guesswork and misinformation by evaluating the alignment of response correctness with the learner’s certainty that their provided response is correct. Learner confidence before assessment, however, has not been thoroughly investigated either alone or in conjunction with certainty for use in performance evaluation, especially at the undergraduate level. The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy for assessing pre-assessment confidence and post-response certainty in relation to response correctness for students in an undergraduate linear algebra course. Due to the subjective nature of self-reflection, certainty was found to be more aligned with correctness than confidence. Though confidence and certainty levels were reported with similar overall averages, 32% of students demonstrated misaligned confidence and certainty. This study demonstrates the usefulness of a novel assessment method and presents insights that may inform teaching methods, improve examination structure, and identify concerning student behaviors early for corrective intervention.
An analysis of questions with multiple solution methods and multiple outcomes in mathematics textbooks

Abstract:This paper examines three elementary school mathematics textbooks (one textbook from each of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) to determine to what extent these textbooks present questions with multiple outcomes and multiple solution methods. Document analysis as a qualitative research method is adopted. The findings reveal that only 8% of all three textbook questions have multiple correct outcomes and 92% of them have only one correct outcome. Further analysis of questions with multiple outcomes shows that the majority of these questions have limited correct outcomes rather than limitless ones. It is also found that only 6.2% all worked-examples are solved through different solution methods. Given that textbooks are often considered to have influences on both teaching and learning, these findings present important implications for mathematics learning and teaching. The issues of student creativity and higher-order thinking are especially discussed as they are closely associated with the use of questions with multiple solution methods and outcomes.
An outlook on self-assessment of homework assignments in higher mathematics education

Abstract:BackgroundWe discuss first experiences with a new variant of self-assessment in higher mathematics education. In our setting, the students of the course have to mark a part of their homework assignments themselves and they receive the corresponding credit without that any later changes are carried out by the teacher. In this way, we seek to correct the imbalance between student-centered learning arrangements and assessment concepts that keep the privilege to grade (or mark) completely with the teacher.ResultsWe present results in the form of student feedback from a course on functional analysis for third- and fourth-year students. Moreover, we analyze marking results from two courses on real analysis. Here, we compare tasks marked by the teacher and tasks marked by the students.ConclusionsOur experiments indicate that students can benefit from self-assessment tasks. The success depends, however, on many different factors. Promising for self-assessment seem to be small learning groups and tasks in which a priori weaker students can catch up with stronger students by increasing their practising time.

Abstract:The assessment and grading practices in 19 mathematics classes in 5 high schools in 3 states were studied. In each class the most frequently used assessment tools were tests and quizzes, with these determining about 77% of students' grades. In 12 classes other forms of assessment, such as written projects or interviews with students, were also used, with performance on such instruments counting for about 7% of students' grades averaged across all 19 classes. Test items generally were low level, were stated without reference to a realistic context, involved very little reasoning, and were almost never open-ended. Most test items were either neutral or inactive with respect to technology. Written projects usually involved more complex analyses or applications than tests did. The teachers' knowledge and beliefs, as well as the content and textbook of the course, influenced the characteristics of test items and other assessment instruments. Only in geometry classes did standardized tests appear to influence assessment.

Abstract:Abstract Background Motivation is critical for supporting persistence and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In this study, we focus on the assessment of mathematics motivation among secondary school students. We provide validity and reliability evidence for the Mathematics Motivation Questionnaire (MMQ)—adapted from the Science Motivation Questionnaire designed for college students—using data from 2551 secondary students from seven states across the United States. Results Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed five latent factors of the MMQ indicated by 19 items: intrinsic value, self-regulation, self-efficacy, utility value, and test anxiety. The nonlinear SEM reliability coefficients of the five constructs ranged from 0.76 to 0.91. To assess criterion validity, analyses using a subset of the data that included students’ mathematics standardized scores ( n = 536) indicated that intrinsic value, self-regulation, and self-efficacy were significantly positively correlated with mathematics achievement, whereas test anxiety was significantly negatively correlated with mathematics achievement. Conclusions The MMQ provides a reliable, valid, and feasible measure of the specific factors underlying mathematics motivation among secondary students.

The assessment culture of mathematics in Finland: a student perspective

Abstract:This study outlines the assessment culture of mathematics in Finnish basic education (grades 6 and 9) based on a nationally-sampled dataset (N = 673). The study draws on the theoretical framework of assessment cultures as defined through cultures of learning, compliance and fear. We approach the assessment culture of mathematics through the student perspective. Students responded to a survey of how often summative and formative assessment practises were used in mathematics, and how useful they perceived them to be. A cluster analysis was conducted to understand the various student sub-groups on the basis of their perceptions of assessment. Overall, the results highlight the dominating role of exams as the backbone of mathematics assessment. Based on these findings, we conclude that in Finland, where assessment in basic education is mainly low-stakes, and where there are no national tests at this level, the assessment culture of mathematics largely represents a culture of compliance.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the quality of mathematics exam tests in elementary schools using the Rasch model. This research is a type of descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this study were all items of School Examination Mathematical Questions in SDN Region III of Donri Donri Subdistrict, Soppeng Regency. The Mathematics Problem is 40 items. Besides that, in this study, 125 answer sheets from the participants were collected from 125 participants. The technique of data collection is done through documentation. This data collection technique is used to get a set of questions, answers, and a list of names of examinees. The data obtained were analyzed using the Rasch Model. The results showed that based on the Rash Model of 40 items on the mathematics exam 33 items (82.5%) were in a good category, while the other seven items (17.5%) were in a bad category. Test results indicate that the test information value is 13.8 on the ability scale -1.5 with a measurement error of 0.26.

Abstract:Internationally, mathematics education reform has been directed toward characterizing educational goals that go beyond topic/content/skill descriptions and develop students' problem solving. The Revised Bloom's Taxonomy and MATH (Mathematical Assessment Task Hierarchy) Taxonomy characterize such goals. University entrance examinations have been seen as one way of accomplishing these goals and influence learning, teaching, and assessment in mathematics. The present study analyzed mathematics items ( N = 1077) in Turkish university entrance examinations in 1998-2013 and objectives ( N = 621) in mathematics curricula in 2005, 2011, and 2013 to determine the extent to which they represent the dimensions/categories of these taxonomies and the degree to which items are aligned with objectives in terms of reflecting the dimensions/categories of these taxonomies. The findings reveal that the items demand, to a large extent, automated computational skills; this is also evident in the relevant mathematics curricula. Implications for practice are discussed and could play a role in reforming assessment.
Attitudes Toward Mathematics: A Quantitative Study On The Changing Attitudes Toward Mathematics For Middle School Students

Abstract:Mathematics education continues to be a challenging matter to explore in the United States. For instance, student mathematics achievement rate has decreased or remained unchanged over the last few decades (“NAEP – 2015 Mathematics,” 2015; Provasnik, Stephens, & Perkins, 2016). Moreover, when students advance through grade-levels in school their attitudes toward mathematics often decrease (Ing & Nylund-Gibson, 2017; Mullis et al., 2016; Tuohilampi et al., 2014). This quantitative study aims to measure changes in attitudes toward mathematics across the middle school years. Five attitudinal factors emerged from the study: (1) self-efficacy and self-concept beliefs, (2) motivation to succeed in mathematics, (3) value of mathematics, (4) mathematics anxiety and stress, and (5) enjoyment of mathematics. By using a modified survey instrument and analysis of variance tests, the researcher found significant decreases in the areas of motivation to succeed in mathematics, value of mathematics, and enjoyment of mathematics among 547 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. As a secondary analysis, the researcher found key differences in attitudes between the two traditional genders, and between standard level and advanced level mathematics classes, and among different races. In these analyses, the reported highest levels of positive attitudes toward mathematics were male, Asian, and students in the advanced level mathematics classes. Does question order matter on online math assessments? A big data analysis of undergraduate mathematics final exams

Abstract:Background The sudden growth in online instruction due to COVID‐19 restrictions has given renewed urgency to questions about remote learning that have remained unresolved. Web‐based assessment software provides instructors an array of options for varying testing parameters, but the pedagogical impacts of some of these variations has yet to be examined. Objectives The current study examines whether question order affects student performance on online college math assessments. Drawing on the literature of testing and math anxiety, we hypothesized that difficult questions near the beginning of an assessment would have a destructive effect on student confidence, which would in turn have a deleterious effect on their performance. Methods We employed an observational 'big data' methodology, analysing 23,468 final exams completed by students in 10 different courses over eight semesters at a Math Emporium in a large technical university in the eastern United States. Students were freshmen and sophomores enrolled in non‐engineering math courses. We regressed the final score on the difficulty level of the first and second questions, controlling for several other factors. Results and Conclusions We found that several factors—day of the week, amount of time before the deadline, number of minutes spent on the exam—have more of an impact on score than question order. This pattern was consistent across sexes. Takeaways Our findings contradict some previous studies, which have found that difficult early questions degrade student performance, and that this affect is more pronounced in females. This work enriches our understanding of how students respond to online assessment.

An analysis of multiple choice questions (MCQs): Item and test statistics from mathematics assessments in senior high school

Abstract:The multiple-choice test is a common test format used in education. One of the purposes of this test is to evaluate the success of the learning process in a particular subject. Therefore, the efficiency of the evaluation depends on the quality of the test items used. This research was conducted in order to reveal the quality of the final mathematics examination items statistically. It was descriptive quantitative research employing two-parameter logistic (2pl) model of Item Response Theory (IRT). The data were obtained from the sample of 353 students established using the purposive sampling technique. This finding shows that 40% of the 35 items tested are very difficult, 60% are in the medium level, and there is no easy item. The most difficult material is the trigonometric calculation. The percentage of the item discrimination index is described as follows: 8.57% of the items are categorized as very low, 51.43% are categorized as low, 31.43% of the items have a medium item discrimination index value, 5.71% have a high item discrimination index value, and 2.86% of the items are categorized as very high. Moreover, the research found that all distractors functioned well. The highest information on ability θ = 0.4 with information function value of 5.38 and SEM = 0.6. This test is suitable for students with the ability of -1.42 <θ <2.65.
