Abstract:The main theme of this paper is the dynamics of Reeb flows with symmetries on the standard contact sphere. We introduce the notion of strong dynamical convexity for contact forms invariant under a group action, supporting the standard contact structure, and prove that in dimension $2n+1$ any such contact form satisfying a condition slightly weaker than strong dynamical convexity has at least $n+1$ simple closed Reeb orbits. For contact forms with antipodal symmetry, we prove that strong dynamical convexity is a consequence of ordinary convexity. In dimension five or greater, we construct examples of antipodally symmetric dynamically convex contact forms which are not strongly dynamically convex, and thus not contactomorphic to convex ones via a contactomorphism commuting with the antipodal map. Finally, we relax this condition on the contactomorphism furnishing a condition that has non-empty $C^1$-interior.

Abstract:Let $(Y,\lambda)$ be a non-degenerate contact three manifold. D. Cristfaro-Gardiner, M. Hutshings and D. Pomerleano showed that if $c_{1}(\xi=\mathrm{Ker}\lambda)$ is torsion, then the Reeb vector field of $(Y,\lambda)$ has infinity many Reeb orbits otherwise $(Y,\lambda)$ is a lens space or three sphere with exaxtly two simple elliptic orbits. In the same paper, they also showed that if $b_{1}(Y)>0$, $(Y,\lambda)$ has a simple positive hyperbolic orbit directly from the isomorhphism between Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and Embedded contact homology. In addition to this, they asked whether $(Y,\lambda)$ with infinity many simple orbits also has a positive hyperbolic orbit under $b_{1}(Y)=0$. In the present paper, we answer this question under $Y \simeq S^{3}$ with nontrivial finite free group actions, especially lens spaces $(L(p,q),\lambda)$ with odd $p$ as quotient spaces of $S^{3}$.

Abstract:Stable Hamiltonian structures generalize contact forms and define a volume-preserving vector field known as the Reeb vector field. We study two aspects of Reeb vector fields defined by stable Hamiltonian structures on 3-manifolds: on one hand, we classify all the examples with finitely many periodic orbits under a non-degeneracy condition; on the other, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of a supporting broken book decomposition and for the existence of a Birkhoff section.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a hyperbolic (or, more generally, isolated as an invariant set) closed Reeb orbit on the dynamics of a Reeb flow on the $(2n-1)$-dimensional standard contact sphere, extending two results previously known for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms to the Reeb setting. In particular, we show that under very mild dynamical convexity type assumptions, the presence of one hyperbolic closed orbit implies the existence of infinitely many simple closed Reeb orbits. The second main result of the paper is a higher-dimensional Reeb analogue of the Le Calvez-Yoccoz theorem, asserting that no closed orbit of a non-degenerate dynamically convex Reeb pseudo-rotation is locally maximal, i.e., isolated as an invariant set. The key new ingredient of the proofs is a Reeb variant of the crossing energy theorem.

Abstract:In this text we study billiards on ovals and investigate some consequences of a rotational symmetry of the boundary on the dynamics. As it simplifies some calculations, the symmetry helps to obtain the results. We focus on periodic orbits with the same symmetry of the boundary which always exist and prove that in general half of them are elliptic and Moser stable and the other half are hyperbolic with homo(hetero)clinic intersections.

Elliptic Reeb orbit on some real projective three-spaces via ECH

Abstract:We prove the existence of an elliptic Reeb orbit for some contact forms on the real projective three space $\mathbb{R} P^3$. The main ingredient of the proof is the existence of a distinguished pseudoholomorphic curve in the symplectization given by the $U$ map on ECH. Also, we check that the first value on the ECH spectrum coincides with the smallest action of null-homologous orbit sets for $1/4$-pinched Riemannian metrics and compute the ECH spectrum for the irrational Katok metric example.

Abstract:We study three sub-problems of the N-body problem that have two degrees of freedom, namely the n-pyramidal problem, the planar double-polygon problem, and the spatial double-polygon problem. We prove the existence of several families of symmetric periodic orbits, including ``Schubart-like" orbits and brake orbits, by using topological shooting arguments.

A symplectic dynamics approach to the spatial isosceles three-body problem

Abstract:We study the spatial isosceles three-body problem from the perspective of Symplectic Dynamics. For certain choices of mass ratio, angular momentum, and energy, the dynamics on the energy surface is equivalent to a Reeb flow on the tight three-sphere. We find a Hopf link formed by the Euler orbit and a symmetric brake orbit, which spans an open book decomposition whose pages are annulus-like global surfaces of section. In the case of large mass ratios, the Hopf link is non-resonant, forcing the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits. The rotation number of the Euler orbit plays a fundamental role in the existence of periodic orbits and their symmetries. We explore such symmetries in the Hill region and show that the Euler orbit is negative hyperbolic for an open set of parameters while it can never be positive hyperbolic. Finally, we address convexity and determine for each parameter whether the energy surface is strictly convex, convex, or non-convex. Dynamical consequences of this fact are then discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a generalisation of Schlenk's theorem about the existence of contractible periodic Reeb orbits on stable, displaceable hypersurfaces in symplectically aspherical, geometrically bounded, symplectic manifolds, to a forcing result for contractible twisted periodic Reeb orbits. We make use of holomorphic curve techniques for a suitable generalisation of the Rabinowitz action functional in the stable case in order to prove the forcing result. As in Schlenk's theorem, we derive a lower bound for the displacement energy of the displaceable hypersurface in terms of the action value of such periodic orbits. The main application is a forcing result for noncontractible periodic Reeb orbits on quotients of certain symmetric star-shaped hypersurfaces. Either there exist two geometrically distinct noncontractible periodic Reeb orbits or the period of the noncontractible periodic Reeb orbit is small. This theorem can be applied to many physical systems including the Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian and Stark-Zeeman systems. Further applications include a new proof of the well-known fact that the displacement energy is a relative symplectic capacity on $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ and that the Hofer metric is indeed a metric.

Genus zero transverse foliations for weakly convex Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere

Abstract:A contact form on the tight $3$-sphere $(S^3,\xi_0)$ is called weakly convex if the Conley-Zehnder index of every Reeb orbit is at least $2$. In this article, we study Reeb flows of weakly convex contact forms on $(S^3,\xi_0)$ admitting a prescribed finite set of index-$2$ Reeb orbits, which are all hyperbolic and mutually unlinked. We present conditions so that these index-$2$ orbits are binding orbits of a genus zero transverse foliation whose additional binding orbits have index $3$. In addition, we show in the real-analytic case that the topological entropy of the Reeb flow is positive if the branches of the stable/unstable manifolds of the index-$2$ orbits are mutually non-coincident.

Abstract:On a 3-dimensional contact manifold with boundary, a bypass attachment is an elementary change of the contact structure consisting in the attachment of a thickened half-disc with a prescribed contact structure along an arc on the boundary. We give a model bypass attachment in which we describe the periodic orbits of the Reeb vector field created by the bypass attachment in terms of Reeb chords of the attachment arc. As an application, we compute the contact homology of a product neighbourhood of a convex surface after a bypass attachment, and the contact homology of some contact structures on solid tori.

Abstract:Our purpose here is to adapt the results of Geodesic circle foliations for Reeb flows or Hamiltonian flows on contact manifolds. Consequently, all periods are exactly the same if the contact manifold is connected and all orbits on the contact manifold are closed. We also present concrete examples of periodic flows, all of whose orbits are closed, such as Harmonic oscillators, Lotka-Volterra systems, and others. Lotka-Volterra systems, Reeb flows, and some geodesic flows have non-trivial periods, whereas the periods of Harmonic oscillators and similar systems can be easily obtained through direct calculations. As an application to quantum mechanics, we examine the spectrum of semiclassical Shrödinger operators. Then we have one of the semiclassical analogies of the Helton-Guillemin theorem.

Symmetries and periodic orbits for the $n$-body problem: about the computational approach

Abstract:The main problem is to understand and to find periodic symmetric orbits in the $n$-body problem, in the sense of finding methods to prove or compute their existence, and more importantly to describe their qualitative and quantitative properties. In order to do so, and in order to classify such orbits and their symmetries, computers have been extensively used in many ways since decades. We will focus on some very special symmetric orbits, which occur as symmetric critical points (local minimizers) of the gravitational Lagrangean action functional. The exploration of the loop space of the $n$-point configuration space, raised some computational and mathematical questions that couldd be interesting. The aim of the article is to explain how such questions and issues were % considered in the development of a software package that combined symbolic algebra, numerical and scientific libraries, human interaction and visualization.

Abstract:We study bifurcations of symmetric elliptic fixed points in the case of p : q resonances with odd . We consider the case where the initial area-preserving map possesses the central symmetry, i. e., is invariant under the change of variables , . We construct normal forms for such maps in the case , where and are mutually prime integer numbers, and is odd, and study local bifurcations of the fixed point in various settings. We prove the appearance of garlands consisting of four -periodic orbits, two orbits are elliptic and two orbits are saddles, and describe the corresponding bifurcation diagrams for one- and two-parameter families. We also consider the case where the initial map is reversible and find conditions where nonsymmetric periodic orbits of the garlands are nonconservative (contain symmetric pairs of stable and unstable orbits as well as area-contracting and area-expanding saddles).

Abstract:The intention of this article is to illustrate the use of methods from symplectic geometry for practical purposes. Our intended audience is scientists interested in orbits of Hamiltonian systems (e.g. the three-body problem). The main directions pursued in this article are: (1) given two periodic orbits, decide when they can be connected by a regular family; (2) use numerical invariants from Floer theory which help predict the existence of orbits in the presence of a bifurcation; (3) attach a sign +/- to each elliptic or hyperbolic Floquet multiplier of a closed symmetric orbit, generalizing the classical Krein--Moser sign to also include the hyperbolic case; and (4) do all of the above in a visual, easily implementable and resource-efficient way. The mathematical framework is provided by the first and third authors, where the ``Broucke stability diagram'' was rediscovered, but further refined with the above signs, and algebraically reformulated in terms of GIT quotients of the symplectic group. The advantage of the above framework is that it applies to the study of closed orbits of an arbitrary Hamiltonian system. Moreover, in the case where the system admits symmetries in the form of ``reflections'', i.e. anti-symplectic involutions, which is the case for many systems of interest, the information provided for orbits which are symmetric is richer, and one may distinguish more symmetric orbits. This is the case for several well-known families in the space mission design industry, such as the Halo orbits, which are ubiquitous in real-life space missions. We will carry out numerical work based on the cell-mapping method, for the Jupiter-Europa and the Saturn-Enceladus systems. These are currently systems of interest, falling in the agenda of space agencies like NASA, as these icy moons are considered candidates for harbouring conditions suitable for extraterrestrial life.

Discovery of a nearby L-T transition object in the Southern Galactic plane

Abstract:We present the discovery of 2MASS J11263991-5003550 identified as part of an ongoing survey to discover ultra-cool dwarfs in the Southern Galactic Plane, using data from the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys. Strong FeH and H2O absorption features in the near-infrared JH-band spectrum reveal characteristics seen in both mid-L, and L-T transition type dwarfs. We suggest these may be attributable to holes in the condensate cloud layers in the atmosphere of a single sub-stellar object, but cannot at present completely rule out the role of binarity as the possible cause. We also identify this object as a blue L dwarf, and explore the similar observable characteristics of these objects with those of the L-T transition. From this comparison we suggest that the temperature (and thus spectral type) at which the condensate cloud later begins to break-up/rain out, may be highly sensitive to small variations in metallicity. However, the JH-band spectrum of this object does not resemble that of the known L sub-dwarfs, and therefore extreme metal deficiency may not in fact be responsible for the discordant features. We estimate a spectral type of L9+/-1, and measure a large proper-motion of \mu_(tot)=1.65"+/-0.03" per year. Also, a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2pc is estimated, possibly making this object the nearest easily observable single L-T transition object in the southern hemisphere.

A New Class of Symmetric Periodic Solutions of the Spatial Elliptic Restricted Three-Body Problem

Abstract:We show that there exists a new class of symmetric periodic solutions of the spatial elliptic restricted three-body problem. In such a solution, the infinitesimal body is confined to the vicinity of a primary and moves on a nearly circular orbit. This orbit is almost perpendicular to the orbital plane of the primaries, where the line of symmetry of the orbit lies. The existence is shown by applying a corollary of Arenstorf’s fixed point theorem to a periodicity equation system of the problem. And this existence doesn’t require any restriction on the mass ratio of the primaries, nor on the eccentricity of their relative elliptic orbit. Potential relevance of this new class of periodic solutions to real celestial body systems and the follow-up studies in this respect are also discussed.
Periodic orbits of non-degenerate lacunary contact forms on prequantization bundles

Abstract:A non-degenerate contact form is lacunary if the indexes of every contractible periodic Reeb orbit have the same parity. To the best of our knowledge, every contact form with finitely many periodic orbits known so far is non-degenerate and lacunary. We show that every non-degenerate lacunary contact form on a suitable prequantization of a closed symplectic manifold $B$ has precisely $r_B$ contractible closed orbits, where $r_B=\dim \mathrm{H}_*(B;{\mathbb Q})$. Examples of such prequantizations include the standard contact sphere and the unit cosphere bundle of a compact rank one symmetric space (CROSS). We also consider some prequantizations of orbifolds, like lens spaces and the unit cosphere bundle of lens spaces, and obtain multiplicity results for these prequantizations.
