Abstract:The ever increasing process of high-voltage high-power fully controlled semiconductor technology has promoted the flexible ac transmission systems ahead significantly. Developments advance both the HVDC power transmission and the flexible ac transmission system technologies. In this paper, an overview of HVDC power transmission systems is provided. Recent advanced technology in this area is presented. Advantage and disadvantage of typical topologies are studied and compared. It is confirmed that HVDC transmission systems have great prospects in the future.
Applicable occasions of UHVAC/UHVDC transmission and their technology comparisons in China

Abstract:From point view of the world, UHV transmission technology will develop continuously. In China, the planning UHV grid is composed of 1000 kV AC transmission systems and ±800 kV DC transmission systems. Based on the differences of technical and economic characteristics of UHVAC/UHVDC, their applicable occasions in China are first compared. Then, some technical problems of UHVAC/UHVDC, such as lightning protection of transmission lines, reliability, stability, and electromagnetic environment of power grid, insulator selection, and DC/AC coordination, are compared respectively. Main conclusions are therefore made as follows: UHVAC is mainly applicable to short-distance and large-capacity electricity transmission and the network construction of a higher voltage grade. UHVDC is mainly applicable to long-distance and large-capacity electricity transmission with clear transmission end and receiving end, and is also applicable to the interconnections of some regional and provincial power grids. The positive transmission lines of UHVDC are more likely to be damaged by lightning than the negative ones. The case that the electricity transmission to a certain region through several UHVAC transmission lines from the same large scale power plant, should be avoided. More attentions should be paid to the safety and stability status of 'multi-infeed HVDC transmission systems' with UHVDC and EHVDC transmission lines. It is suggested that composite insulators of large tonnage and high intensity are prior to be used in the UHV transmission lines in China. Pollution proof glass insulators and composite insulators should be combined in use, which will avoid the brittle fracture of composite insulators.
Analysis on Insulation Coordination Scheme for ±800 Kv DC Converter Station

Abstract:Insulation coordination of converter substation is one of key technologies in the implementation of ±800kV DC power transmission project. Based on two ±800kV DC power transmission projects being constructed in China, i.e., the DC power transmission project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai and that from Yunnan to Guangdong, the features of insulation coordination for UHVDC converter substations are analyzed in the aspects of separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor and the configuration of lightning arresters. The economic and technical superiorities of the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor in UHVDC power transmission are emphatically researched, and it is pointed out that the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor will be the preferred arrangement of smoothing reactor in UHVAC converter stations. The arrangement of lightning arresters for above-mentioned two converter subsatations are given, and the protecting function of each arrester is described. Finally, the end-to-end protecting function of smoothing reactor connected with pole bus by parallel arresters, which is adopted in UHVAC projects, as well as the merits and defects of different protection modes adopted for at the valve side of wye-wye connected converter transformer in above-metioned two UHVDC proj ects are analyzed.
DISCUSSION ON SEVERAL IMPORTANT PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPING UHV AC TRANSMISSON IN CHINA

Abstract:According to the development trend of power network in China, it is pointed out that the development of UHV AC transmission is not only an effictive approach to meet the growing demand of electric power, but also the requirement of improving power network structure and promoting the nation-wide power grid interconnection. Detailed discussion is then presented on several controversial problems existing in the UHV AC transmission field, including: knowledge about insulation characteristics of gas interval, selection of an appropriate voltage level, effective prevention measures for abnormal lightning trip-out percentage, application of composite insulators in the prevention of dirty flashover, control of environmental influence caused by UHV transmission lines and substations, superiority of UHV in economy and relationship between UHV AC transmission and DC transmission. In the construction of domestic UHV AC transmission, the actual condition of UHV AC transmission engineering in China should be considered, and on the basis of using the research results of former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), Japan and United States for reference, and more attention should be paid to the research on UHV transmission technology and the development of related equipments.

Abstract:People show a great interest in building HVDC transmission grid because compare to traditional AC transmission grid, DC gird is more suitable in long distance power transmission. However, behaviors of DC system in some aspects is different as which in AC system, therefore study of these new behaviors is become a popular topic in recent years. Research on Insulation Coordination for Converter Stations of Zhoushan Multi-Terminal VSC-HVDC Transmission Project

Abstract:The insulation coordination for converter station is one of the key technologies to implement flexible DC power transmission projects, and the results of the research on this field can provide important guidance to the design, type selection, manufacture and test of converter equipments in converter stations. To decide insulation levels for equipments of converter stations in Zhoushan multi-terminal flexible DC power transmission project reasonably, the arrester layout schemes for converter stations are proposed; corresponding arrester parameters and protection levels are calculated; the recommended insulation margins for equipments in converter stations are given and based on the selected equipment insulation margins the insulation levels for equipments in converter stations are finally determined. Insulation coordination results corresponding to three different arrester layout schemes are given and the coordination results show that different arrester layout schemes mainly influence on the insulation levels among terminals of reactors connected to bridge arms:for the first arrester layout scheme, the insulation levels of lightning impulse and that of switching impulse among reactor terminals connected to bridge arms are 450 kV and 325 kV respectively, and for the second and the third arrester layout schemes the insulation levels among reactor terminals connected to bridge arms are the same and the insulation level of lightning impulse and that of switching impulse are 750 kV and 550 kV respectively. Except reactors connected to bridge arms, the recommended insulation levels for other equipments in converter stations under all arrester layout schemes are the same;for AC equipments at valve side of converter transformer the insulation levels of lightning impulse are recommended as 650 kV (or 750 kV) and the insulation level of switching impulse is recommended as 550 kV; the insulation level of lightning impulse and that of switching impulse for AC equipments at valve side of bridge arm reactors are taken the same as these for equipments at valve side of converter transformer; the insulation levels of lightning impulse of 200 kV DC buses in converter stations are recommended as 650 kV (or 750 kV) and that of switching impulse is recommended as 550 kV; the insulation levels of lightning impulse and these of switching impulse among terminals of DC smoothing reactors are taken as 850 kV (or 950 kV) and 750 kV respectively. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of the three arrester layout schemes are analyzed. Results of this research topic can offer important foundation for Zhoushan multi-terminal flexible DC power transmission project and are available for reference to other VSC-HVDC projects.
Comparison of Insulation Coordination Between ±800kv and ±1100kv UHVDC Systems

Abstract:Insulation coordination is a key problem in UHVDC systems in terms of safety and cost. Although high-voltage +/- 1100kV UHVDC projects are being planned in China, the characteristics and key points of high-voltage systems have not yet been analyzed. This study aims to improve the safe, effective operation of these high-voltage power transmission systems. First, we analyzed two typical insulation coordination schemes used in +/- 800kV UHVDC systems in China. Next, we used the two typical +/- 800kV insulation coordination schemes as a reference to analyze the +/- 1100kV UHVDC system. Finally, we compared these schemes and proposed an effective insulation coordination solution, as well as developing principles for +/- 1100kV UHVDC systems. Our findings indicate that the points enduring the highest voltage in the system should be protected separately by special arresters. Our analysis of the insulation coordination of +/- 800kV and +/- 1100kV UHVDC systems concluded that, in +/- 1100kV UHVDC systems, the main goal of insulation coordination is to lower the insulation level of points enduring the highest voltage. However, in a +/- 800kV UHVDC system, the main goal is to reduce the cost of manufacture for arresters, as well as the space occupation in the valve hall, with an acceptable insulation level.

Abstract:The grounding methods for multi-terminal voltage source converter based high voltage direct current( VSCHVDC) transmission system in Zhoushan were researched,and the grounding method for each converter station was determined,in which star ground reactance with neutral grounding resistor were recommended for Dinghai and Daishan converter station,while Y / Y converter transformer with neutral grounding resistor were recommended for Qushan,Yangshan and Sijiao converter station. On this basis,the overvoltage and insulation levels of converter station equipments were calculated. For Dinghai and Daishan converter station,the rated voltage of equipment at the ac side of the converter transformer is 220 kV,the lightning impulse insulation level for equipments at this zone are 950 kV. For the other three stations,the rated voltage is 110 kV,the lightning impulse insulation level is 450 kV; the insulation level of lightning impulse and that of switching impulse for AC equipment at the valve side of the transformer are 650 kV( or 750 kV) and 550 kV; insulations for 200 kV DC polar line are suggested to 650 kV( or 750 kV) and 550 kV respectively.

Abstract:The external insulation coordination is one of the key technologies in the UHVDC power transmission projects and deserves further studies. External insulation mainly contains two parts, the insulation coordination of insulator and coordination of air gaps in transmission. Some frequently-used types of insulators are selected and compared from their service life and electrical performance. Two widely used methods, leakage distance method and pollution withstand voltage method are used to calculate the number of insulators. Statistical method is adopted to coordinate the air gap of transmission line. The insulators' selection in different areas has been calculated, and the air gap distance is coordinated. Research shows that, shed insulator has good pollution withstand property, could be used in light polluted area. Composite insulator has excellent antifilthy spark overability, it could be applied in medium or more serious polluted areas. In icing serious area, insulation performance of the composite insulators suffers great declination, porcelain insulator is recommended to be used here. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Insulation coordination of converter station is one of the key technologies in the implementation of ±1 100 kV UHVDC power transmission projects, which normally guides the design, type selection, manufacturing and testing of converter station equipment. To specify insulation levels of ±1 100 kV converter station equipment reasonably, to lower technological difficulty of a project, and to improve its economy, we studied two key issues, namely, the configuration scheme and type selection of arresters in converter station, on the basis of the ±1100 kV UHVDC power transmission project from Zhundong to Chengdu. Thereby, the arrester configuration scheme for ±1 100 kV UHVDC converter station is recommended to be basically the same as the arrester configuration scheme for ±800 kV converter stations, except it has A2 arrester installed at the upper valve side of converter transformer. This arrester configuration scheme can reduce the insulation levels of bushings of upper converter transformer and the insulation level of 1 100 kV UHVDC wall bushing from 2 250 kV to 2 100 kV and 2 150 kV respectively; and the two insulation levels can be further reduced to 2 000 kV if 1 000 kV UHVAC high-performance MOAs are adopted.

Abstract:In order to specify the overvoltage and insulation level of equipments in ±1100 kV UHVDC converter stations, the arrester configuration scheme and some basic parameters for ±1100 kV Zhundong converter station are proposed. Overvoltage of equipments in AC system, valve hall, DC busbar, and neutral busbar are also calculated in accordance with the fundamental principles of arrester configuration for UHV converter stations and the existing experiences in insulation coordination of ±800 kV UHVDC converter stations. The work is done also for specifing insulation levels for ±1100 kV UHVDC converter stations of the ±1100 kV UHVDC power transmission project from Zhundong to Sichuan in China. Thus, the recommended insulation margins that determine the insulation levels of converter station equipments are proposed: the insulation margins for thyristor valves are 10%/10%/15% for switching impulse/lightning impulse/steer front impulse; the insulation levels of lighting and swtiching impulses are recommended as 2600 kV and 2150 kV respectively for 1100 kV DC buses, and as 2250 kV and 2100 kV respectively for equipments at the valve side of high-voltage Y/Y converter transformers.

Abstract:The construction of the future energy structure of China under the 2050 carbon-neutral vision requires compact direct current (DC) gas-insulation equipment as important nodes and solutions to support electric power transmission and distribution of long-distance and large-capacity. This paper reviews China's 10-year progress in DC gas-insulated equipment. Important progresses in basic research and industry perspective are presented, with related scientific issues and technical bottlenecks being discussed. The progress in DC gas-insulated equipment worldwide (Europe, Japan, America) is also reported briefly.

Abstract:HVDC systems are playing an increasingly significant role in energy transmission due to their technical and economic superiority over HVAC systems for long distance transmission. HVDC is preferable beyond 300–800 km for overhead point-to-point transmission projects and for the cable based interconnection or the grid integration of remote offshore wind farms beyond 50–100 km. Several HVDC review papers exist in literature but often focus on specific geographic locations or system components. In contrast, this paper presents a detailed, up-to-date, analysis and assessment of HVDC transmission systems on a global scale, targeting expert and general audience alike. The paper covers the following aspects: technical and economic comparison of HVAC and HVDC systems; investigation of international HVDC market size, conditions, geographic sparsity of the technology adoption, as well as the main suppliers landscape; and high-level comparisons and analysis of HVDC system components such as Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) and Line Commutated Converters (LCCs), etc. The presented analysis are supported by practical case studies from existing projects in an effort to reveal the complex technical and economic considerations, factors and rationale involved in the evaluation and selection of transmission system technology for a given project. The contemporary operational challenges such as the ownership of Multi-Terminal DC (MTDC) networks are also discussed. Subsequently, the required development factors, both technically and regulatory, for proper MTDC networks operation are highlighted, including a future outlook of different HVDC system components. Collectively, the role of HVDC transmission in achieving national renewable energy targets in light of the Paris agreement commitments is highlighted with relevant examples of potential HVDC corridors.

Abstract:High-voltage DC (HVDC) power transmission plays a key role in the global power grid today and will continue to play a key role in the future, particularly for high-voltage, large-capacity, long-distance power transmission and regional power grid interconnection [1]. HVDC was first developed in the 1930s as a reliable technology that can effectively convert AC electricity produced at the point of generation to DC electricity for transmission. In 1954 the world's first commercial HVDC project connected the Swedish mainland and the Island of Gotland with a ±100 kV mass-impregnated cable with a power rating of 20 MW [2], [3]. Abstract:Long distance, bulk power transmissions are the developing trend for power grids in China. HVDC transmission technology will take the key role in long distance, bulk power transmissions. The studies on the top end technologies of HVDC transmission are very important for construction of key transmission projects as well as stable operation of power systems in China. Based on the applications and studies of HVDC transmission technologies in China Southern power system, the research work on HVDC transmission technology and operation technologies of hybrid AC/DC power systems, ongoing studies and corresponding results on key technologies of HVDC transmission project and UHVDC technologies were introduced. The applications of research results in China Southern power system are demonstrated.

Report on the Research Progress of the Project on the Breakdown Mechanism of Insulation System of EHVDC Equipment Under Complex Electric Field

Abstract:This project plans to deeply study the breakdown mechanism of oil-paper insulation under complex electric field, propose the calculation method of the electrical field distribution in oil-paper insulation stucture of HVDC equapment, and thus provide a powerful support for the domestic manufacturing of EHVDC converter transformers. In the early stage of research, following achivements have been obtained. (1)The space charge distribution and the distortion of electric field in the single and double layers of oil-impregnated papers were studied. Moreover, a numerical simulation model was built to describe the change injection, migration and accumulation, and the distributions of charge and electric field in oil-impregnated papers were sucessfully simulated. (2)The electric field distribution in the bushing-end structure in converter transformers was analized. The effects of barrier stucture (e.g. the depth, position, oil gap, paper thickness and layer numbers etc.) on field distribution under AC/DC combined voltage and polarity reversal were investigated. A 400 kV bushing-end structure was preliminarily optimized and designed. (3)The breakdown properties of oil-paper stucture under AC/DC combined voltage and the effect of pre-stressing on breakdown voltage were studied. The results showed that the breakdwon strength was greatly influenced by the space charge behavior. Moreover, the partial discharge characteristics under AC/DC combined voltage was studied.

Abstract:This article discusses the current state of DC HVDC technology. The article describes the history of DC HVDC technology, starting with its early development as a voltage source, and then discusses the introduction of line-cutting into current designs. The article discusses control and co-ordination of transformers, as well as the need for a DC breaker to facilitate control of multiple plants. Recent developments in the design of DC circuit breakers are discussed. The importance of reliability is recognized, especially in relation to cables, and the issues surrounding cable design are explained.
