Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. As in our previous articles on the $\infty$-categorical extensions of certain analytic and topological contexts, we discuss the corresponding prismatic cohomological constructions after Bhatt-Lurie, Bhatt-Scholze and Drinfeld, and the corresponding Robba stacks and sheaves after Kedlaya-Liu.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called <math>w⁎</math>-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.

Abstract:This survey aims to provide a guide to the literature on topological 4-manifolds. Foundational theorems on 4-manifolds are stated, especially in the topological category. Precise references are given, with indications of the strategies employed in the proofs. Where appropriate we give statements for manifolds of all dimensions. Many intuitively plausible theorems which are standard results in differential topology are either extraordinarily deep results in the topological category, are open, or are known to be false. Hence one must proceed with caution. This book seeks to help 4-manifold topologists navigate potential pitfalls, and to apply the many powerful results that do exist with confidence.

Abstract:Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Abstract:Let Np(Bn) (p > 1) be the Privalov class of holomorphic functions on the unit ball Bn in the space of n-complex variables. The class Np(Bn) (p > 1), equipped with the topology given by a natural metric, becomes an F-algebra. In this paper, we shall introduce a Fréchet space Fp(Bn) (p > 1) of holomorphic functions on Bn which contains Np(Bn). Abstract:This expository note aims at illustrating weak convergence of probability measures from a broader view than a previously published paper. Though the results are standard for functional analysts, this approach is rarely known by statisticians and our presentation gives an alternative view to most standard probability textbooks. In particular, this functional approach clarifies the underlying topological structure of weak convergence. We hope this short note is helpful for those who are interested in weak convergence as well as instructors of measure theoretic probability.

Abstract:This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.

Abstract:Roughly spoken, Functionalanalysis means the study of the category of infinite-dimensional vectorspaces over the field of real or complex numbers, together with their linear maps. In most cases, one further needs a topological structure on such a vectorspace, because then, you can consider the continuous linear maps between such spaces. The name Functionalanalysis is due to the fact, that in the beginning of the theory, the authors wanted to expand Calculus onto functionals of spaces of functions. Functionalanalytical results give the possibility to solve problems in the Theory of (Partial) Differential Equations, in Complex Analysis or in Quantum Mechanics. But the aim of this lines is not to explain the applications. We will discuss the mathematical theory of almost metric spaces, normed vector spaces and algebras, spaces of continuous resp. $p$-integrable functions as well as reflexive and uniformly convex spaces.

Abstract:We study non-linear functionals, including quasi-linear functionals, p-conic quasi-linear functionals, d-functionals, r-functionals, and their relationships to deficient topological measures and topological measures on locally compact spaces. We prove representation theorems and show, in particular, that there is an order-preserving, conic-linear bijection between the class of finite deficient topological measures and the class of bounded p-conic quasi-linear functionals. Our results imply known representation theorems for finite topological measures and deficient topological measures. When the space is compact we obtain four equivalent definitions of a quasi-linear functional and four equivalent definitions of functionals corresponding to deficient topological measures.

Hindman's finite sums theorem and its application to topologizations of algebras

Abstract:The first part of the paper is a brief overview of Hindman's finite sums theorem, its prehistory and a few of its further generalizations, and a modern technique used in proving these and similar results, which is based on idempotent ultrafilters in ultrafilter extensions of semigroups. The second, main part of the paper is devoted to the topologizability problem of a wide class of algebraic structures called polyrings; this class includes Abelian groups, rings, modules, algebras over a ring, differential rings, and others. We show that the Zariski topology of such an algebra is always non-discrete. Actually, a much stronger fact holds: if $K$ is an infinite polyring, $n$ a natural number, and a map $F$ of $K^n$ into $K$ is defined by a term in $n$ variables, then $F$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of the space $K^{n+1}$ with its Zariski topology. In particular, $K^n$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of $K^{n+1}$. The proof essentially uses a multidimensional version of Hindman's finite sums theorem established by Bergelson and Hindman. The third part of the paper lists several problems concerning topologization of various algebraic structures, their Zariski topologies, and related questions.

Abstract:One important class of tools in the study of the connections between algebraic and topological structures are the "Banach-Stone type theorems", which describe algebraic isomorphisms of algebras (or groups, lattices, etc.) of functions in terms of homeomorphisms between the underlying topological spaces. Several such theorems have been proven throughout the last century, however not all of them are comparable, and in particular no single one is the strongest. In this article, we describe a general framework which encompasses several of these results, and which allows for new applications related to groupoid algebras, and to groups of circle-valued functions. This is attained by a detailed study of "disjointness relations" on sets of functions, which play a central role (even if not explicitly) in previously-proven Banach-Stone type theorems.

Abstract:We introduce a sheaf theoretic viewpoint on functional analysis designed for infinite dimensional Lie group actions. We develop functional calculus for Banach valued functors and, in particular, prove the existence of an exponential map for a certain class of operators that generalise first order partial differential operators. This algebraic framework can be used in dynamical systems and KAM theory to provide normal forms and versal deformations. it is used in our papers on the subject such as the Herman conjecture paper, the versal deformation theorem for vector fields etc.

Abstract:This text contributes to the foundations of the theory of global Berkovich spaces, that is to say Berkovich spaces over Banach rings with nice properties such as $\mathbf{Z}$, rings of integers of number fields, discrete valuation rings, hybrid fields, etc. We focus on three main themes that had not been investigated so far: category, topology and cohomology. As regards the category, our main task is to define a well-behaved notion of morphism. We then have the suitable setting at our disposal to carry out and study various constructions: products, fiber products, extensions of scalars, analytification of schemes, etc. On the topological side, we show that global Berkovich spaces are locally path-connected. The main ingredient is an analogue of Noether's normalization lemma, that we obtain after a careful study of finite morphisms. Finally, we prove that open and closed discs of arbitrary dimension have no higher coherent cohomology. This is a deep result, which allows us to initiate a theory of global overconvergent affinoid spaces, where the analogues of Tate's and Kiehl's theorems hold. As a consequence of our vanishing statements, we obtain a geometric proof of a Noetherianity result for certain rings of convergent arithmetic power series (power series with integral coefficients and positive complex radii of convergence), generalizing a theorem of D. Harbater from the case of a single variable to arbitrary many.

We introduce topological conditions on a broad class of functionals that ensure that the persistent homology modules of their associated sublevel set filtration admit persistence diagrams, which, in particular, implies that they satisfy generalized Morse inequalities.
