Abstract:Studies of the transport of wet water vapour are relevant for various areas of human activity, including the construction and production of building materials, mining, agriculture, environmental safety of technological processes, scientific research. In particular, one of the methods for extracting highly viscous bitumen grades of oil from the subterranean depths is based on the dilution of the contents of the porous medium by means of pumping coolants. The simplest and environmentally friendly coolant is wet steam containing small drops of water. In addition, with the help of heated water vapour, the filtering elements of collectors are cleaned from sediments of the solid phase (for example, paraffins, gas hydrates and ice floes) on the walls of the porous medium. For realistic modeling of the processes of filtration and heat and mass transfer during the injection of wet steam into a porous medium, it is necessary to investigate the characteristics of the interaction of saturated water vapour with individual through-type pores. In this paper, a study was carried out through mathematical modelling of the dependence of the diffusion rate of wet water vapour on the pressure difference outside the pore that occurs when water vapour is injected into a porous medium. The dependencies of the diffusion rate on the pore cross section, the magnitude of vapour adsorption on the pore walls, as well as the effect of water vapour temperature on all these processes were also investigated. Practical interest is the study of the influence of the rate of cooling of water vapour on the diffusion rate and the adsorption of water vapour on the wall of the pores. The calculations were carried out using a hybrid type model that combines molecular dynamics and macro-diffusion approaches to describe the interaction of water vapour with individual pores.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents the application of the Darcy and Richards equations, describing water flow and dynamic changes of the water content in porous medium, for numerical modeling of water capillary rise in the selected building materials. The numerical simulations of unsaturated and variably saturated water flow in the studied materials were performed in FEFLOW commercial computational software, by DHI-Wasy, Germany. The developed model represented a wall section constructed of aerated concrete blocks, covered by mortar prepared using blended cement with biomass ash addition. The physical and water retention characteristics of the modeled materials were based on the previously performed laboratory measurements and literature research. The assumed initial conditions reflected air dry wall with limited moisture, while the boundary conditions allowed modeling of capillary rise due to direct contact of the studied materials with water with variable pressure head. The results of numerical calculations allowed observation of the time-dependent changes in the moisture content of building materials in relation to their physical properties and variable boundary conditions.

Abstract:We are focused to the numerical modelling of heat, contaminant and water transport in unsaturated porous media in 3D. The heat exchange between water and porous media matrix is taken into the account. The determination of heat energy transmission coefficient and matrix heat conductivity is solved by means of inverse problem methods. The mathematical model represents the conservation of heat, contaminant and water mass balance. It is expressed by coupled non-linear system of parabolic-elliptic equations. Mathematical model for water transport in unsaturated porous media is represented by Richard's type equation. Heat transport by water includes water flux, molecular diffusion and dispersion. A successful experiment scenario is suggested to determine the required parameters including heat transmission and matrix heat conductivity coefficients. Additionally we investigate contaminant transport with heat transmission and contaminant adsorption. The obtained experiments support our method suitable for solution of direct and inverse problems. This problem we have discussed previously in 1D model, but preferential streamlines in 1D thin tubes shadow accurate results in determination of required parameters. In our presented setting we consider a cylindrical sample which is suitable in laboratory experiments for inverse problems.

Abstract:We propose an approach that links density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to study fluid behavior in nanopores in contact with bulk (macropores). It consists of two principal steps. First, the theoretical calculation of fluid composition and density distribution in nanopore under specified thermodynamic conditions using DFT. Second, MD simulation of the confined system with obtained characteristics. Thus, we investigate an open system in a grand canonical ensemble. This method allows us to investigate both structural and dynamic properties of confined fluid at given bulk conditions and do not require computationally expensive simulation of bulk reservoir. In this work, we obtain equilibrium density profiles of pure methane, ethane and carbon dioxide and their binary mixtures in slitlike nanopores with carbon walls. Good agreement of structures obtained by theory and simulation confirms the applicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:A great number of studies have been carried out to provide the macroscopic descriptions of the overall viscous resistance and heat transfer in the porous media. The new numerical study is necessary to be performed to obtain an understanding of the characteristics at macro/pore scale. The multiscale modeling of the flow and heat transfer in the porous media remains difficult with standard one mesh methods due to the heterogeneity in different scales. In this study, the convection heat transfer is simulated using a macro-scale model including the thermal non-equilibrium assumption. The results, which are validated by the predictions in open literature, show that the convection heat transfer in the porous media can be predicted numerically using a thermal non-equilibrium model. To understand the heat transfer characteristics between the fluid and the solid in porous media, a pore-scale model is developed to obtain the macroscopic properties, especially the convective heat transfer coefficient between two phases. A single cell is simulated to represent a small region in a much larger porous medium. The complex porous structure is reconstructed based on the review of the previous studies and the computational fluid dynamic technique is used to predict flow and heat transfer process. The present work can be extended to study the phase change phenomena in complex structured media, which is normally applied in the latent heat thermal energy storage.

Abstract:In this contribution, we present the mathematical model of coupled heat and moisture transport in deformable porous media and rock masses. The model is based on basic conservation laws and equilibrium equations involving the damage parameters influencing transport processes. We formulate and analyze the problem in a weak sense and we present a numerical example illustrating the applicability of the model.

Abstract:We present a dual-resolution molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of liquid water employing a recently introduced Adaptive Resolution Scheme (AdResS). The spatially adaptive molecular resolution procedure allows for changing from a coarse-grained to an all-atom representation and vice versa on-the-fly. In order to find the most appropriate coarse-grained water model to be employed with AdResS, we first study the accuracy of different coarse-grained water models in reproducing the structural properties of the all-atom system. Typically, coarse-grained molecular models have a higher diffusion constant than the corresponding all-atom models due to the reduction in degrees of freedom (DOFs) upon coarse-graining that eliminates the fluctuating forces associated with those integrated-out molecular DOFs. Here, we introduce the methodology to obtain the same diffusional dynamics across different resolutions. We show that this approach leads to the correct description of the here relevant structural, thermodynamical, and dynamical properties, i.e., radial distribution functions, pressure, temperature, and diffusion, of liquid water at ambient conditions.

Abstract:The aim of the thesis is to present and analyze two particular problems of transport in porous media flow. The first of them is related to the process of saturation of porous building materials. Recently, M. K\"untz and P. Laval\'ee, using a computer model of this process, have concluded that the anomalous diffusion assumption is correct. In this thesis I present an alternative explanation of this results without any refer to anomalous diffusion. The second part of the thesis covers the numerical analysis of the tortuosity of the flow -- one of a very interesting physical macroscopic variables characterizing transport in porous media. Simulation of Stochastic Non-Equilibrium Thermal Effects of Particle Inclusions within Fluid Interfaces and Membranes

Abstract:We formulate theoretical modeling approaches and develop practical computational simulation methods for investigating the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of fluid interfaces with passive and active immersed particles. Our approaches capture phenomena taking into account thermal and dissipative energy exchanges, hydrodynamic coupling, and correlated spontaneous fluctuations. Our methods allow for modeling non-uniform time-varying temperature fields, fluid momentum fields, and their impacts on particle drift-diffusion dynamics. We show how practical stochastic numerical methods can be developed for these systems by performing analysis to factor operators analytically to obtain efficient algorithms for generating the fluctuating fields. We demonstrate our methods in a few simulation studies showing how they can be used to capture particle heating of the interface and the roles of thermal gradients on hydrodynamic fluctuations. The methods developed provide modeling and simulation approaches that can be used for further investigations of non-equilibrium phenomena in active soft materials, complex fluids, and biophysical systems.

Mathematical and Computer Modelling of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:This study emphasizes the significance of understanding groundwater flow behavior for effective contaminant transport and heat storage. Aquifers, with their irregular shapes and variable permeability, exhibit anisotropic flow resistances that affect mass and heat transfer, posing challenges for modeling. The dual-porosity model is used as a numerical approach to calculate macroscopic heat transfer without explicitly resolving the structure. By solving equations for mobile and immobile phases and coupling relevant equations for heat conservation, this model was applied to transient numerical experiments simulating heat transfer and storage in a desktop model filled with glass beads. Results indicate alignment with experimental and numerical models resolving porous structures on the microstructure scale. This methodology offers a comprehensive digital toolbox for solving large-scale heat storage problems in aquifers, contributing to digital and sustainability transformations with reasonable computational demands.

Abstract:The complicated multiphase flow in porous media is one important issue in the field of energy utilization. This work performed the pore-scale lattice Boltzmann modeling and simulation of liquid–gas two-phase fluid transport phenomena within porous domain. The three-dimensional porous structure was numerically reconstructed with high-resolution CT scan images. The flow and thermal parameters in porous spaces were obtained under the conditions of different contact angles. The liquid water in the porous domain with hydrophilic solid surface reaches the equilibrium state more quickly compared to that in hydrophobic one. The numerical approach established in this paper can provide detailed information of the multiphase fluid transport characteristics in complex porous media.
Three-dimensional phase-field simulations of water freezing and thawing at pore-scale

Abstract:This work deals with numerical simulation of water freezing and thawing in a complex three-dimensional geometry of a porous medium. The porous structure is represented by a virtual container filled with glass beads. Phase transition modeling is approached at both macro-scale and micro-scale, combining heat transfer in a heterogeneous medium and a phase-field approximation of the Gibbs-Thomson relation by means of the Allen-Cahn equation. The formulation of the model contains novel components tailored for the given purpose. At the macro-scale, surface tension effects are negligible and phase transition focusing based on temperature can replace the Allen-Cahn equation. In contrast to that, simulations of equilibrium states at the micro-scale allow to eliminate the heat equation by assuming constant supercooling. For numerical solution, an efficient hybrid parallel algorithm based on the finite volume method and the Runge-Kutta-Merson solver with adaptive time stepping are employed. The results of different model variants at different scales are discussed. In a parametric study, the full phase-field model is demonstrated to deliver consistent results across a wide range of surface tension values, exhibiting curvature-induced premelting if surface tension is artificially exaggerated. As surface tension tends to the realistic values, the results of the phase-field approach those of the simplifed temperature-driven phase transition model. In addition, micro-scale simulations of water freezing at different supercooling values aim to predict the unfrozen water content and compare the results with data from literature. Numerical stability, accuracy, and computational costs are also discussed.

Abstract:Convective drying of porous media is central to many engineering applications, ranging from spray drying over water management in fuel cells to food drying. To improve these processes, a deep understanding of drying phenomena in porous media is crucial. Therefore, detailed simulation of multiphase flows with phase change is of great importance to investigate the complex processes involved in drying porous media. While many studies aim to access the phenomena solely by simulations, here we succeed to compare comprehensively simulations with an experimental methodology based on microfluidic multiphase flow studies in engineered porous media. In this contribution, we propose a Navier–Stokes Cahn–Hilliard model coupled with balance equations for heat and moisture to simulate the two-phase flow with phase change. The phase distribution of the two fluids air and water is modeled by the Phase-Field equation. Comparisons with experiments are rare in the literature and usually involve very simple cases. We compare our simulation with convective drying experiments of porous media. Experimentally, the interface propagation of the water–air interface was visualized in detail during drying in a structured microfluidic cell made from PDMS. The drying pattern and the drying time in the experiment are very well reproduced by our simulation. This validation will enable the application for the presented Navier–Stokes Cahn–Hilliard model in more complex cases focused more on applications, e.g., in the field of fibrous materials.

Abstract:We present a stable numerical scheme for modelling multiphase flow in porous media, where the characteristic size of the flow domain is of the order of microns to millimetres. The numerical method is developed for efficient modelling of multiphase flow in porous media with complex interface motion and irregular solid boundaries. The Navier–Stokes equations are discretised using a finite volume approach, while the volume-of-fluid method is used to capture the location of interfaces. Capillary forces are computed using a semi-sharp surface force model, in which the transition area for capillary pressure is effectively limited to one grid block. This new formulation along with two new filtering methods, developed for correcting capillary forces, permits simulations at very low capillary numbers and avoids non-physical velocities. Capillary forces are implemented using a semi-implicit formulation, which allows larger time step sizes at low capillary numbers. We verify the accuracy and stability of the numerical method on several test cases, which indicate the potential of the method to predict multiphase flow processes.

Abstract:Abstract The focus of the underlying research work is on the macroscopic modeling of unstable multiphase fluid flow in deformable porous media, where a lower‐viscous fluid is displaced by a more viscous fluid. This process leads to the formation of channel‐like networks, called viscous fingering. The instability effect is involved in a wide range of different fields in engineering. Some of the most common applications include carbon sequestration to store carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in underground reservoirs, contaminant transport in geostructures, in industrial processes, such as filtration, catalytic reactions, and in the operation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells with multiphase flow in the gas diffusion layers. In this work, ideal miscible water–glycerin fluids are considered. It is assumed that the interacting fluids in the deformable porous media are incompressible. In addition, a dispersion–diffusion law is applied to capture the fluid–fluid interactions. The presence of a deformable porous material adds additional effects to the problem of the multiphase flow in porous media. The stresses in the porous solid matrix lead to changes in the porosity and influence the flow velocity of the fluids. To couple the deformable porous media with the multiphase flow, a macroscopic approach is used that relies on the theory of porous media. For the porous solid matrix, a linear elastic material model within small strains assumption is applied. The influence of the deformation‐dependent porosity on the instability is studied for 2D simulations, such as a multilayered geometry with different elastic parameters. The presented coupled nonlinear system of differential equations is simulated with the finite element method. Furthermore, a stabilization technique based on the quasi‐compressibility method is used.

Abstract:Particle suspensions are ubiquitous in our daily life, but are not well understood due to their complexity. During the last twenty years, various simulation methods have been developed in order to model these systems. Due to varying properties of the solved particles and the solvents, one has to choose the simulation method properly in order to use the available compute resources most effectively with resolving the system as well as needed. Various techniques for the simulation of particle suspensions have been implemented at the Institute for Computational Physics allowing us to study the properties of clay-like systems, where Brownian motion is important, more macroscopic particles like glass spheres or fibers solved in liquids, or even the pneumatic transport of powders in pipes. In this paper we will present the various methods we applied and developed and discuss their individual advantages.

Abstract:Wettability of textured surfaces of copper and carbon substrates is under study. It is revealed that the geometric parameters of the textures being created (e.g., depth and regularity) significantly affect the surface lyophilicity and the manner in which a water droplet spreads and moves. The contact angles obtained experimentally are consistent with the angles obtained via molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:A multiphysical model was developed to analyze the coupled hydro-thermo-mechanical field for unsaturated porous materials. The coupling integrates the Fourier's laws for heat transfer, Richard's equation for fluid transfer, and linear constitutive relationship. Coupled parameters were utilized to transfer information within or between field variables. Additional relationships, such as the similarity between drying and freezing processes, Clapeyron equation for ice balance were incorporated to consider the effects of frost action. Numerical simulations were implemented in multiphysical platform to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. A simulation case was carried out on a relatively simple geometry, using accepted models for thermal, hydraulic and mechanical properties. Results of multiphysical simulations, (such as the freezing induced moisture redistribution, the thermal stresses, etc) are consistent with the basic laws and experience. The phenomena of different field coupling are produced from the simulation results. A unique feature of our model is the coupling of the stress field in additional to the thermo-hydraulic process. This can be used to study freezing-induced stresses in porous materials. The simulation results on a simple geometry indicates freezing induced fracture is likely to first occur on the exterior surface of geomaterials.
Simulation of near‐saturated flow in soil macropores with the lattice Boltzmann method

Abstract:Direct information about the soil structure can be obtained with X‐ray computed microtomography, and the imaged macropore networks can be used as geometries in the lattice Boltzmann flow simulations. This method has not been widely applied for near‐saturated flows due to methodological issues related to diffuse‐interface two‐phase flow simulations in samples with limited resolution. Here, a simple pore‐scale lattice Boltzmann approach to simulate steady‐state water flow in partially saturated soil macropore networks that circumvents these problems is presented. The actual simulation is preceded by the determination of water–air distribution, for example, by using morphological operations. Flow through the water‐filled part of the pore space is done by using no‐slip conditions at water–solid boundaries and slip conditions at water–air interfaces. The method was tested by simulating film flow over a solid surface, and the numerical results are shown to agree with the analytical expression available for this flow geometry. The method is further tested, and its use is demonstrated with real tomographic reconstructions of clay soil samples.
