Abstract:Studies of the transport of wet water vapour are relevant for various areas of human activity, including the construction and production of building materials, mining, agriculture, environmental safety of technological processes, scientific research. In particular, one of the methods for extracting highly viscous bitumen grades of oil from the subterranean depths is based on the dilution of the contents of the porous medium by means of pumping coolants. The simplest and environmentally friendly coolant is wet steam containing small drops of water. In addition, with the help of heated water vapour, the filtering elements of collectors are cleaned from sediments of the solid phase (for example, paraffins, gas hydrates and ice floes) on the walls of the porous medium. For realistic modeling of the processes of filtration and heat and mass transfer during the injection of wet steam into a porous medium, it is necessary to investigate the characteristics of the interaction of saturated water vapour with individual through-type pores. In this paper, a study was carried out through mathematical modelling of the dependence of the diffusion rate of wet water vapour on the pressure difference outside the pore that occurs when water vapour is injected into a porous medium. The dependencies of the diffusion rate on the pore cross section, the magnitude of vapour adsorption on the pore walls, as well as the effect of water vapour temperature on all these processes were also investigated. Practical interest is the study of the influence of the rate of cooling of water vapour on the diffusion rate and the adsorption of water vapour on the wall of the pores. The calculations were carried out using a hybrid type model that combines molecular dynamics and macro-diffusion approaches to describe the interaction of water vapour with individual pores.
Numerical Simulation on Solvent Diffusion during Polymeric Coating Curing Processes

Abstract:Numerical models of solvent diffusion during polymer coating solidification can provide guidance for curing condition optimization, coating defect prevention and design of new drying equipment. Mass and heat transfer models for curing processes of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/acetone coating on glass substrate was established based on Fick's second law and Vrentas-Duda free volume theory. The Galerkin finite element method was used to solve model equations. Concentration distribution of acetone and PMMA was obtained during curing, and the validity of the model was verified by Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the model results are in good agreement with the experimental results in the initial curing stage (0~ 700 s), and the relative error is 0.37%~4.5%. The predicted acetone concentration is higher than the experimental value in the later curing stage (844 s~), which indicates that the modeled coating process is slower than the actual diffusion process.

Abstract:Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the fluid adsorption phenomena and calculate the surface tension in porous media at different temperatures, densities and pore widths. The facts that most of the fluid particles are adsorbed adherent to the pore walls and the surface forms near the walls have been found, and that the surface is not stable which means there exists an oscillation phenomenon in pores have been also found. The surface tension in pores is much bigger than that in macrovolume systems like normal liquid–liquid and liquid–vapor interfaces, and it will increase with the increase of density and pore width, but will decrease with the increase of temperature.

Abstract:The vibrational motion of molecules in dissipative environments, such as solvation and protein molecules, is composed of contributions from both intermolecular and intramolecular modes. The existence of these collective modes introduces difficulty into quantum simulations of chemical and biological processes. In order to describe the complex molecular motion of the environment in a simple manner, we introduce a system-bath model in which the intramolecular modes with anharmonic mode-mode couplings are described by a system Hamiltonian, while the other degrees of freedom, arising from the environmental molecules, are described by heat bath. Employing a machine-learning based approach, we determine not only the system parameters of the intramolecular modes but also the spectral distribution of the system-bath coupling to describe the intermolecular modes, using the atomic trajectories obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The capabilities of the present approach are demonstrated for liquid water using MD trajectories calculated from the SPC/E model and the polarizable water model for intramolecular and intermolecular vibrational spectroscopies (POLI2VS) by determining the system parameters describing the symmetric-stretch, asymmetric-stretch and bend modes with intramolecular interactions and the bath spectral distribution functions for each intramolecular mode representing the interaction with the intra-molecular modes. From these results, we were able to elucidate the energy relaxation pathway between the intramolecular modes and the intermolecular modes in a non-intuitive manner.

Abstract:The density distributions of water molecules and hydrogen bond in a specific nanocapsule at different temperatures were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. We also analysed the intra-molecule angle and orientation of water molecules. The result indicates that, due to the confinement of carbon nanocapsule, water molecules are distributed mainly in three capsule-like layers, between which there are almost no water molecules. With temperature rising, the peaks of density distribution broaden to the nanotube wall. The hydrogen bonds are distributed similarly and affect the orientation of water molecules. There are a lot of hydrogen bonds at 1000 K, and the nanocapsule break with some molecules coming out at 3100 K.

It is revealed that the geometric parameters of the textures being created (e.g., depth and regularity) significantly affect the surface lyophilicity and the manner in which a water droplet spreads and moves. The contact angles obtained experimentally are consistent with the angles obtained via molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study two topics of water molecules on hydrophobic surfaces. Some properties of the nanobubbles with different ingredients and behavior of single water chains in single-walled carbon nanochannels are exploited. Molecular simulations show that the density of the N2 and H2 are quite high, which is critical for the stability of the nanobubbles and may have potential applications, such as hydrogen storage, incorporated with recent experimental method to controllably produce hydrogen nanobubbles. The water molecules inside the nanochannel show an unexpected directed motion with long time period, which is indispensable in the future study of the dynamics of biological channels.

Abstract:In the present paper, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the influence of two temperature control strategies on water flow behaviour inside planar nanochannel. In the simulations, the flow was induced by the force acting on each water molecule in the channel. Two temperature control strategies were considered: (a) frozen wall simulations, in which the dynamics of confining wall atoms was not solved and the thermostat was applied to the water, and (b) dynamic wall simulations, in which the dynamics of confining wall atoms was solved, and the thermostat was applied to walls while water was simulated in the microcanonical ensemble. The simulation results show that the considered temperature control strategies has no effect on the shape of the water flow profile, and flow behaviour in the channel is well described by the Navier–Stokes equation solution with added slip velocity. Meanwhile, the slip velocity occurring at the boundaries of the channel is linearly dependent on the magnitude of the flow inducing force in both frozen wall and dynamic wall simulations. However, the slip velocity is considerably greater in simulations when the wall dynamics are solved in contrast to the frozen wall simulations.

Abstract:A multi-scale framework was recently proposed for more realistic molecular dynamics simulations in continuum solvent models by coupling a molecular mechanics treatment of solute with a fluid mechanics treatment of solvent, where we formulated the physical model and developed a numerical fluid dynamics integrator. In this study, we incorporated the fluid dynamics integrator with the Amber simulation engine to conduct atomistic simulations of biomolecules. At this stage of the development, only nonelectrostatic interactions, i.e., van del Waals and hydrophobic interactions are included in the multi-scale model. Nevertheless numerical challenges exist in accurately interpolating the highly nonlinear van del Waals term when solving the finite-difference fluid dynamics equations. We were able to bypass the challenge rigorously by merging the van del Waals potential and pressure together when solving the fluid dynamics equations and by considering its contribution in the free-boundary condition analytically. The multi-scale simulation engine was first validated by reproducing the solute-solvent interface of a single atom with analytical solution. Next, we performed the relaxation simulation of a restrained symmetrical monomer and observed a symmetrical solvent interface at equilibrium with detailed surface features resembling those found on the solvent excluded surface. Four typical small molecular complexes were then tested, both volume and force balancing analysis showing that these simple complexes can reach equilibrium within the simulation time window. Finally, we studied the quality of the multi-scale solute-solvent interfaces for the four tested dimer complexes and found they agree well with the boundaries as sampled in the explicit water simulations.
Molecular simulation of the surface tension of real fluids

Abstract:Molecular models of real fluids are validated by comparing the vapor-liquid surface tension from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to correlations of experimental data. The considered molecular models consist of up to 28 interaction sites, including Lennard-Jones sites, point charges, dipoles and quadrupoles. They represent 38 real fluids, such as ethylene oxide, sulfur dioxide, phosgene, benzene, ammonia, formaldehyde, methanol and water, and were adjusted to reproduce the saturated liquid density, vapor pressure and enthalpy of vaporization. The models were not adjusted to interfacial properties, however, so that the present MD simulations are a test of model predictions. It is found that all of the considered models overestimate the surface tension. In most cases, however, the relative deviation between the simulation results and correlations to experimental data is smaller than 20 %. This observation corroborates the outcome of our previous studies on the surface tension of 2CLJQ and 2CLJD fluids where an overestimation of the order of 10 to 20 % was found.

Abstract:We present a dual-resolution molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of liquid water employing a recently introduced Adaptive Resolution Scheme (AdResS). The spatially adaptive molecular resolution procedure allows for changing from a coarse-grained to an all-atom representation and vice versa on-the-fly. In order to find the most appropriate coarse-grained water model to be employed with AdResS, we first study the accuracy of different coarse-grained water models in reproducing the structural properties of the all-atom system. Typically, coarse-grained molecular models have a higher diffusion constant than the corresponding all-atom models due to the reduction in degrees of freedom (DOFs) upon coarse-graining that eliminates the fluctuating forces associated with those integrated-out molecular DOFs. Here, we introduce the methodology to obtain the same diffusional dynamics across different resolutions. We show that this approach leads to the correct description of the here relevant structural, thermodynamical, and dynamical properties, i.e., radial distribution functions, pressure, temperature, and diffusion, of liquid water at ambient conditions.

Abstract:It was shown in recent experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that Schrage equation predicts evaporation and condensation rates of water in the absence of a non-condensable gas with good accuracy. However, it is not clear whether Schrage equation is still accurate or even valid for quantifying water evaporation and condensation rates in air. In this work, we carry out MD simulations to study steady-state evaporation and condensation of water at a planar water-air interface. The simulation results show that the evaporation and condensation fluxes of water in the presence of air are still in a good agreement with the predictions from Schrage equation. From Schrage equation and Stefan's law of mass diffusion, we derive an analytical expression for the effective thermal conductivity of a planar heat pipe. The analytical prediction of the dependence of effective thermal conductivity on heat pipe length and density of non-condensable gas is corroborated by our MD simulation results and recent experimental data.

Abstract:An improved two-boundary interphase method was used to evaluate the microscopic condensation coefficient of water and energetic characteristics of water molecules crossing the liquid–vapour interphase from molecular dynamics simulation. The spontaneous evaporation mass flux was obtained from water evaporation into virtual vacuum simulations and was used to calibrate the interphase boundary planes positions for evaporation, condensation and reflection event counting method in liquid–vapour phase equilibria simulations. Our revised microscopic condensation coefficient values are significantly greater than previously published values by Tsuruta and Nagayama (J Phys Chem B 10:1736–1743, 2004), what is consequence of the different methods used for event counting in the interphase. Also, the microscopic condensation coefficient for water is an increasing function of the surface-normal component of translational kinetic energy of the impinging molecules, while the simulation average condensation coefficient, i.e. the macroscopic condensation coefficient, is decreasing function of liquid phase temperature. The analysis of reflected molecules shows that the surface-normal component of translational kinetic energy of reflected molecules after reflection is independent of the components value before reflection. Furthermore, the proposed reflection temperature, which is related to the average value of the surface-normal component of translational kinetic energy of reflected molecules, is significantly lower than the system temperature and is linear function of liquid phase temperature. Finally, a shift of the velocity distribution of reflected molecules was revealed for water.

Abstract:In the last decades a large effort has been devoted to the study of water confined in hydrophobic geometries at the nanoscale (tubes, slit pores), because of the multiple technological applications of such systems, ranging from drugs delivery to water desalinization devices. To our knowledge, neither numerical/theoretical nor experimental approaches have so far reached a consensual understanding of structural and transport properties of water under these conditions. In this work, we present molecular dynamics simulations of TIP4P/2005 water under different hydrophobic nano-confinements (slit pores or nanotubes, with two degrees of hydrophobicity) within a wide temperature range. On the one side, water is more structured near the hydrophobic walls, independently on the confining geometries. On the other side, we show that the combined effect of confinement and curvature leads to an enhanced diffusion coefficient of water in hydrophobic nanotubes. Finally, we propose a confined Stokes-Einstein relation to extract viscosity from diffusivity, whose result strongly differs from the Green-Kubo expression that has been used in previous work. We discuss the shortcomings of both approaches, which could explain this discrepancy.

Abstract:Understandings heat transfer across a solid/liquid interface is important to develop new pathways to improve thermal management in various energy applications. One of the important questions that arises in this context is the impact of three-phase contact line between solid, liquid and gas on the perturbations of the heat fluxes at the nanoscale. Therefore, this paper is devoted to the investigations of features of thermal transport across nanosized meniscus constrained between two solid walls. Different wetting states of the meniscus were considered with molecular dynamics approach by the variation of the interactional potential between atoms of the substrate and the liquid. The effect of the size of the meniscus on the exchange of energy between two solid walls was also investigated. It was shown that the presence of a three phase contact line leads to a decrease of the interfacial boundary resistance between solid and liquid. Further, investigations with the finite element method were used to link atomistic simulations with the continuum mechanics. We demonstrate that the wetting angle and the interfacial boundary resistance are the required key-parameters to perform multiscale simulations of such engineering problems with an accurate microscale parametrization.

Abstract:The properties of water in confined systems have been an interesting topic of research for years. The understanding of these properties is vital to many areas such as tribology and microelectromechanical systems. Yet, it is very challenging to implement a cost-effective model to study water in confined systems with molecular dynamics simulations because these models typically require the use of grand-canonical (GC) simulation or thermodynamic extrapolation methods (TEM). In this work, we proposed and examined an alternative but effective model for the study of water in confined systems using the standard Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) without any additional customized subroutines. Two pseudo surfaces were used to play the role of pistons for maintaining pressure and two phosphorylcholine self-assembled monolayers (PC-SAM) were used as model surfaces to implement the confinement. Both the structure and dynamics of the water were investigated. In addition, the model was used to study the friction between the two surfaces, producing simulation results comparable to what has been reported in the literature. The calculated pressure of water between the surfaces was also in good agreement with experimental values. Therefore, the model may provide a cost-effective way to explore the properties of water in confined systems at the molecular level. In principle, the model should be applicable for other fluids in other confined systems as well.
Phase behavior of water-like models in nanoscopic pores of slit shape. Predictions from a density functional theory

Abstract:We have explored the phase behavior of a set of water-like models in slit pores of nanoscopic dimensions. The interaction between water and pore walls mimics the graphite surface. A version of density functional method is used as theoretical tools. The fluid models are adopted from the work of Clark et al. [Mol. Phys., 2006, 104, 3561]. They reproduce the bulk water vapor-liquid coexistence envelope adequately. Our principal focus is on changes of topology of the phase diagram of confined water and establishing trends of behavior of the crossover temperature between condensation and evaporation on the strength of water-graphite interaction potential. Growth of the water film on the pore walls is illustrated in terms of the density profiles. Theoretical results are discussed in context of computer simulation findings for water models in pores.

Abstract:In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was employed to evaluate the influence of hydrophilization on the interaction of polypropylene surfaces with water. Constrained MD and simulated annealing were applied to construct theoretical models for the amorphous surfaces of hydrophobic polypropylene and those hydrophilized with amino, carboxyl, ammonium, and carboxylate groups. These model surfaces were studied by wetting with water droplets, and the corresponding water contact angles were calculated and compared with experimental results. We have confirmed the feasibility of the models in simulating the surfaces of realistic polypropylene. The structure and behavior of interfacial water molecules on these model surfaces can be achieved and compared with each other. Results indicate the formation of a dynamic hydration layer on the hydrophilized polypropylene surfaces. By the decomposition of the interaction potential, we found that the introduction of polar groups significantly improves the electrostatic component of the interaction potential for the surfaces with water.
