Abstract:Although electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 (CO2ER) over bimetallic Cu-based catalysts has been regarded as a promising and compelling route for the sustainable synthesis of fuels and feedstock when combined by carbon-free electricity, questions still remain concerning the fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism and the nature of active sites, hampering the rational design of catalyst with great activity and selectivity a priori. We report a global optimization in large scale to obtain serious realistic nanoparticles (NPs) models of different particle sizes and the identification of atom-level structures of active sites for CO products on CuZn and CuAu NPs catalysts during CO2ER, using machine learning and density functional theory calculations. After the analysis of 300 surface sites (600 computational data points) through neural network (NN) potential based high-throughput testing, we demonstrate that the bimetallic Cu-based NPs have superior CO2ER because there are many bimetallic synergistic effect sites that significantly stabilize the carboxyl intermediate during CO2 reduction to CO, breaking the inherent linear relationship. This work shed light on the structure- performance relationship over more realistic large NPs, facilitating the rational design of Cu-based catalysts in CO2ER.

Abstract:Abstract The active sites for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 R) to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products over oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) catalysts are under long-term intense debate. This paper describes the atomic structure motifs for product-specific active sites on OD-Cu catalysts in CO 2 R. Herein, we describe realistic OD-Cu surface models by simulating the oxide-derived process via the molecular dynamic simulation with neural network (NN) potential. After the analysis of over 150 surface sites through NN potential based high-throughput testing, coupled with density functional theory calculations, three square-like sites for C–C coupling are identified. Among them, Σ3 grain boundary like planar-square sites and convex-square sites are responsible for ethylene production while step-square sites, i.e. n (111) × (100), favor alcohols generation, due to the geometric effect for stabilizing acetaldehyde intermediates and destabilizing Cu–O interactions, which are quantitatively demonstrated by combined theoretical and experimental results. This finding provides fundamental insights into the origin of activity and selectivity over Cu-based catalysts and illustrates the value of our research framework in identifying active sites for complex heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion provides a promising way to solve problems of greenhouse effect; however, developing low-cost electrocatalysts to mediate high-efficiency CO2 reduction remains a grand challenge on account of the limited understanding in the real active sites. Herein, we revealed the operando Znδ+ metalloid sites as the real active sites of stable nonstoichiometric ZnOx structure derived from Zn2P2O7 through operando X-ray absorption fine structure analysis in conjunction with evolutionary-algorithm-based global optimization method, which exhibited excellent performance for CO2-to-CO electrocatalysis. Furthermore, theoretical and experimental results demonstrated that Znδ+ metalloid active sites could facilitate the activation of CO2 and the hydrogenation of *CO2, thus accelerating the CO2-to-CO conversion. Our work establishes a critical fundamental understanding of the origin of the real active center in the zinc-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction.

Abstract:Restructuring-induced catalytic activity is an intriguing phenomenon of fundamental importance to rational design of high-performance catalyst materials. We study three copper-complex materials for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. Among them, the copper(II) phthalocyanine exhibits by far the highest activity for yielding methane with a Faradaic efficiency of 66% and a partial current density of 13 mA cm−2 at the potential of – 1.06 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Utilizing in-situ and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that under the working conditions copper(II) phthalocyanine undergoes reversible structural and oxidation state changes to form ~ 2 nm metallic copper clusters, which catalyzes the carbon dioxide-to-methane conversion. Density functional calculations rationalize the restructuring behavior and attribute the reversibility to the strong divalent metal ion–ligand coordination in the copper(II) phthalocyanine molecular structure and the small size of the generated copper clusters under the reaction conditions.

Abstract:The development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) is of great significance. Cu-based catalysts have been widely investigated for ECR due to their unique ability to generate various carbonaceous products, but directing selectivity toward one certain product and identifying the real active sites during ECR are still full of challenge. Here, after the incorporation of CdO into CuO, the Cu 0.5 Cd 0.5 -O catalyst achieves a 10.3-fold enhancement for CO selectivity in comparison with CuO, and a CO faradic efficiency nearly 90% with a current density around 20 mA cm −2 could maintain at least 60 h. Interestingly, a wide CO/H 2 ratio (0.07–10) is reached on Cu x Cd 1− x -O catalysts by varying the Cu/Cd ratio, demonstrating the potential of syngas production using such catalysts. The results of ex situ XRD, XPS, and in situ Raman reveal that the real active sites of Cu 0.5 Cd 0.5 -O catalysts for CO production during ECR reaction are the reconstructed mixed phases of CuCd alloy and CdCO 3 . In situ FTIR and theoretical calculations further implicate the presence of Cd related species promotes the CO desorption and inhibits the H 2 evolution, thus leading to an enhanced CO generation.

Abstract:To date, copper-based catalysts are one of the most prominent catalysts that can electrochemically reduce CO 2 towards high-value fuels or chemicals, such as ethylene, ethanol, acetic acid. However, the chemically active feature of Cu-based catalysts hinders the understanding of the intrinsic catalytic active sites during the initial and the operative processes of electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). The identification and engineering of active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts are thereby vital to further improve the activity, selectivity, and durability of Cu-based catalysts for high-performance CO 2 RR. In this regard, four triggers for the dynamic evolution of catalysts were introduced in detail. Afterward, three typical active-site theories during the dynamic reconstruction of catalysts were discussed. In addition, the strategies in catalyst design were summarized according to the latest reports of Cu-based catalysts for CO 2 RR, including the tuning of electronic structure, controlling of the external potential, and regulation of local catalytic environment. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives were provided to inspire more investigations and studies on the intrinsic active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts, which could promote the optimization of the catalyst system to further improve the performance of CO 2 RR.

Abstract:Aqueous electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2R) on Cu can generate a variety of valuable fuels, yet challenges remain in the improvement of electrosynthesis pathways for highly selective fuel production. Mechanistically, understanding CO 2R on Cu, particularly identifying the product-specific active sites, is crucial. Herein, we rationally designed and fabricated nine large-area single-crystal Cu foils with various surface orientations as electrocatalysts and identified the voltage- and facet-dependent CO 2R selectivities. Operando grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) were applied to track the top-surface reconstructions of Cu, and we correlate the structural evolution with the change of product selectivities. We extracted three distinct structural descriptors, including crystal facet, atomic coordination number, and step-terrace angle, to reveal the intrinsic structure-function relationships and uniquely identify the specific product-producing sites for CO 2R. Our work guides the rational design of Cu-based CO 2R electrocatalysts and, more importantly, establishes a paradigm to understand the structure-function correlation in catalysis.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) is among the most promising approaches used to transform greenhouse gas into useful fuels and chemicals. However, the reaction suffers from low selectivity, high overpotential, and low reaction rate. Active site identification in the CO2RR is vital for the understanding of the reaction mechanism and the rational development of new electrocatalysts with both high selectivity and stability. Herein, in situ characterization monitoring of active sites during the reaction is summarized and a general understanding of active sites on the various catalysts in the CO2RR, including metal‐based catalysts, carbon‐based catalysts, and metal‐organic frameworks‐based electrocatalysts is updated. For each type of electrocatalysts, the reaction pathway and real active sites are proposed based on in situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations. Finally, the key limitations and challenges observed for the electrochemical fixation of CO2 is presented. It is expected that this review will provide new insights and directions into further scientific development and practical applicability of CO2 electroreduction.

The Activity Origin of C-N-Cu Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Formation in CO2 Reduction Reaction under Working Condition

Abstract:Cu-anchored N-doped carbon (C-N-Cu) catalysts had been experimentally shown to exhibit high activity for the conversion of CO2 to ethanol. It is believed that reversible Cu agglomeration on C-N-Cu catalysts under operating conditions is responsible for the high activity, but exploring its intrinsically catalytic active sites faces great challenges since the transient Cu cluster structure can't be effectively detected using in-situ techniques. Here, adopting a developed constant potential method and considering the electrode potential and solvation effect, we theoretically unveil the active sites of C-N-Cu catalysts under working condition. As the negative potential is applied on the C-N-Cu catalyst, electrons are tended to occupy the anti-bonding states of Cu−N bonds, driving the leaching of Cu atoms for the Cu cluster formation. An aggregated C-N-Cu5 cluster configuration is identified as the natural active sites, exhibiting a well-aligned catalytical performance with experimental reports. The d-band center, charge distribution, and multiple active sites of C-N-Cu5 guarantee its configuration as a promising platform for CO2 reduction. Based on this active site, we further elucidated the reaction mechanism and key intermediates of ethanol formation on the C-N-Cu catalysts, revealing the adsorbed CHO species act as the reactants for C-C coupling.

Abstract:Single-atom copper (Cu) embedded within carbon catalysts have demonstrated significant potential in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemicals and fuels. Herein, we develop a straightforward and template-free strategy for synthesizing atomically dispersed CuNC catalysts (CuG) by annealing the self-assembled guanosine. The CuG catalysts display two-dimensional morphology, tunable pore size and large surface areas that can be adjusted by changing carbonization temperature. Spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy reveals that single-atom Cu are homogeneously dispersed on the surface of carbon nanosheets. The optimum CuG-1000 catalysts achieve a high CO Faradaic efficiency (FEco) up to 99% and a high CO current density of 6.53 mA cm-2 (-0.65 V vs. RHE). Besides, the flow cell test of CuG-1000 shows a high current density up to 25.2 mA cm-2 and the FEco still exceeded 91% after more than 20 h of testing. Specifically, the existence of Cu-N3-C active sites was proved by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Density functional theory evidences that tricoordinated copper with N can largely regulate the adsorption and desorption of key intermediates by transferring electrons to *COOH through Cu atoms, thereby improving selectivity toward CO. This work demonstrates the active origin of CuNC catalysts in CO2 electroreduction and offers a blueprint to construct atomically dispersed transition site catalysts by supramolecular self-assembly strategy.

We report here that oxide-derived copper crystals enclosed by six {100} and eight {111} facets can reduce CO2 to multicarbon products with a high Faradaic efficiency of 74.9 ± 1.7% at a commercially relevant current density of 300 mA cm-2 in 1 M KHCO3 (pH ∼ 8.4). By combining the experimental and computational studies, we uncovered that Cu(100)/Cu(111) interfaces offer a favorable local electronic structure that enhances *CO adsorption and lowers C-C coupling activation energy barriers, performing superior to Cu(100) and Cu(111) surfaces, respectively. On this catalyst, no obvious degradation was observed at 300 mA cm-2 over 50 h of continuous operation.

Abstract:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been emerging as a high‐ potential approach for CO2 utilization using renewables. When copper (Cu) based catalysts are used, this platform can produce multi‐carbon (C2+) fuels and chemicals with almost net‐zero emission, contributing to the closure of the anthropogenic carbon cycle. Nonetheless, the rational design and development of Cu‐based catalysts are critical toward the realization of highly selective and efficient CO2 electroreduction. In this review, first the latest advances in Cu‐catalyzed CO2 electroreduction in the product selectivity and electrocatalytic activity are briefly summarized. Then, recent theoretical and mechanistic studies of CO2 electroreduction on Cu‐based catalysts are investigated, which serve as programs to design catalysts. Strategies for devising Cu catalysts that aim at promoting different key elementary steps for hydrocarbon and C2+ oxygenates production are further summarized. Moreover, challenges in understanding the mechanism, operando investigation of Cu catalysts and reactions, and systems' influences are also presented. Finally, the future prospects of CO2 electroreduction are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction is a promising strategy for the production of value-added multicarbon compounds, albeit yielding diverse products with low selectivities and Faradaic efficiencies. Here, copper single atoms anchored to Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets are firstly demonstrated as effective and robust catalysts for electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction, achieving an ultrahigh selectivity of 98% for the formation of multicarbon products. Particularly, it exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of 71% towards ethylene at −0.7 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, superior to the previously reported copper-based catalysts. Besides, it shows a stable activity during the 68-h electrolysis. Theoretical simulations reveal that atomically dispersed Cu–O 3 sites favor the C–C coupling of carbon monoxide molecules to generate the key *CO-CHO species, and then induce the decreased free energy barrier of the potential-determining step, thus accounting for the high activity and selectivity of copper single atoms for carbon monoxide reduction.

Abstract:A Zn cyanamide open‐framework catalyst with stabilized and delocalized Znδ+ sites under electrochemical reduction conditions is constructed, which delivers a high CO Faradaic efficiency of up to 93.9% and remarkable stability without performance decay during 96 h, representing a significant advancement in developing highly‐selective and robust Zn‐based electrocatalysts. Zinc (Zn)‐based materials are cost‐effective and promising single‐metal catalysts for CO2 electroreduction to CO but is still challenged by low selectivity and long‐term stability. Undercoordinated Zn (Znδ+) sites have been demonstrated to be powerful active centers with appropriate *COOH affinity for efficient CO production However, electrochemical reduction conditions generally cause the inevitable reduction of Znδ+, resulting in the decline of CO efficiency over prolonged operation. Herein, a Zn cyanamide (ZnNCN) catalyst is constructed for highly selective and durable CO2 electroreduction, wherein the delocalized Zn d‐electrons and resonant structure of cyanamide ligand prevent the self‐reduction of ZnNCN and maintain Znδ+ sites under cathodic conditions. The mechanism studies based on density functional theory and operando spectroscopies indicate that delocalized Znδ+ site can stabilize the key *COOH intermediate through hard–soft acid–base theory, therefore thermodynamically promoting CO2‐to‐CO conversion. Consequently, ZnNCN delivers a CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) of up to 93.9% and further exhibits a remarkable stability lifespan of 96 h, representing a significant advancement in developing robust Zn‐based electrocatalysts. Beyond expanding the variety of CO2 reduction catalysts, this work also offers insights into understanding the structure‐function sensitivity and controlling dynamic active sites.
