Abstract:The methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation is the most promising research direction in the utilization of CO2 ,in which the research of catalysts is the key point.This review focuses on the copper-based catalysts and summarizes the effect factors including copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support on the activity,methanol selectivity and stability of copper-based catalyst.The preparation methods have huge influences on the copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support which could then affect the catalytic performance.Developments based on the co-precipitation are the research trend of catalysts preparation in nowadays.Improving copper dispersion,decreasing copper particle diameter and increasing interaction between metal copper and support have different effects on the catalytic performance of this reaction.This review of the researches above provides the references for the development of high activity, high methanol selectivity and good stability new catalysts.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Cu/ZnO-based catalysts are widely used for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, but limitations remain for industrial applications. These include achieving high methanol selectivity and conversion and mitigating deactivation by water poisoning. Part I of this review explores the role of active sites on Cu/ZnO-based catalysts in CO2 conversion. The synergistic interaction between copper and zinc oxide is emphasised, particularly regarding interfacial effects on carbon monoxide activation and formate formation. The discussion covers theoretical and experimental perspectives on active site characteristics, including defects, vacancies, steps and strain. Additionally, the review explores the connection between Cu/ZnO-based catalysts properties and methanol synthesis activity.

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to methanol is a promising way to extenuate the adverse effects of CO2 emission, global warming and energy shortage. Understanding the fundamental features of CO2 activation and hydrogenation at the molecular level is essential for carbon utilization and sustainable chemical production in the current climate crisis. This review explores the recent advances in understanding the design of catalysts with desired active sites, including single‐atom, dual‐atom, interface, defects/vacancies and promoters/dopants. We focused on the design of various catalytic systems to enhance their catalytic performances by stabilizing active metal in a catalyst, identifying the unique structure of active species, and engineering coordination environments of active sites. Mechanistic insights provided by advanced operando and in situ spectroscopies were also discussed. Moreover, the review highlights the key factors affecting active sites and reaction mechanisms, such as local environments, oxidation states, and metal‐support interactions. By integrating recent advancements and relating knowledge gaps this review aims to endow an inclusive overview of the field and guide future research toward more efficient and selective catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Abstract:The conversion of C1 molecules, COx (CO and CO2), to valuable chemical products has garnered ever-increasing attention. Among many routes, the hydrogenation via thermal catalysis is particularly promising as a key clean energy technology with the increasing supply of green H2. Zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts exhibit exceptional catalytic performance in the COx hydrogenation to value-added hydrocarbons, especially in combination with zeolite. This review overviews the recent achievements in understanding the active sites and reaction mechanisms of COx hydrogenation on zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts, focusing on three most-studied zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts, namely ZnCrOx, ZnAlOx and ZnZrOx. The challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Zeolite-confined Fe-site catalysts (ZFCs) have emerged as superior materials for sustainably producing high-value chemicals through CO 2 hydrogenation, owing to their adaptable framework, customizable composition, and thermal robustness. They excel in activating, adsorbing, and converting CO 2 with remarkable efficiency and consistency in performance. This has sparked a surge in research interest in recent years. The review delves into the latest advancements in CO 2 catalytic hydrogenation to olefins, alcohols, aromatics, and other liquid hydrocarbons, examining the synthesis, modification tactics, and the correlation between structure and performance across various ZFCs. Additionally, it underscores the pivotal factors affecting performance and sheds light on the mechanisms behind selectivity control in the CO 2 hydrogenation process facilitated by ZFCs. To conclude, it presents pressing challenges and strategic recommendations to inspire the development of high-performance, durable ZFCs for CO 2 hydrogenation applications.

Abstract:What should people do with the huge amount of CO2 captured? CO2 to CO is a promising way for using carbon resources because CO is one component of syngas for the production of many important synthesis intermediates such as dimethyl oxalate (DMO). Hydrogenation of DMO provides an economical and eco-friendly approach for the synthesis of methyl glycolate, ethylene glycol (EG), and ethanol, which is often determined by the reaction conditions and catalysts with different active sites. Thus, DMO or EG is also an important carbon carrier or CO2 utilization product. Also, DMO hydrogenation is a representative reaction for studying the structure–activity relationship in C═O/C–O bond hydrogenation. Therefore, this work provides a comprehensive review of the progress in DMO hydrogenation from the perspective of constructing and stabilizing the active sites. The silver and copper based catalysts with different structures and morphologies used for DMO hydrogenation have been discussed with regard to their catalytic performance and reaction mechanism. The synergy of Cu0 and Cu+ in DMO hydrogenation has been questioned, and new active sites are proposed with more experimental evidence. New reaction routes, hybrid active sites, and the effect of catalyst structure on the active sites for DMO hydrogenation have been achieved and reviewed. Moreover, a strategy of introducing organic additives to improve EG yield and stabilize copper species has been described. This work may help advance the understanding of active sites in DMO hydrogenation and guide the future rational design and fabrication of highly stable and low-cost DMO hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract The active sites for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 R) to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products over oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) catalysts are under long-term intense debate. This paper describes the atomic structure motifs for product-specific active sites on OD-Cu catalysts in CO 2 R. Herein, we describe realistic OD-Cu surface models by simulating the oxide-derived process via the molecular dynamic simulation with neural network (NN) potential. After the analysis of over 150 surface sites through NN potential based high-throughput testing, coupled with density functional theory calculations, three square-like sites for C–C coupling are identified. Among them, Σ3 grain boundary like planar-square sites and convex-square sites are responsible for ethylene production while step-square sites, i.e. n (111) × (100), favor alcohols generation, due to the geometric effect for stabilizing acetaldehyde intermediates and destabilizing Cu–O interactions, which are quantitatively demonstrated by combined theoretical and experimental results. This finding provides fundamental insights into the origin of activity and selectivity over Cu-based catalysts and illustrates the value of our research framework in identifying active sites for complex heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Thermo-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation with renewable energy has become one of the promising alternatives to fossil carbon-based routes for the production of bulk chemicals and has been extensively researched in recent years. And the heterogeneous oxide–zeolite (OX–ZEO) bifunctional catalysts have received much attention due to their high product selectivity. However, the need for multifunctional active sites, the complexity of tandem cascade reactions and the difficulty in understanding reaction mechanisms pose significant challenges for the design of effective catalysts. In this review, we present an overview of recent advances in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to value-added products over OX–ZEO bifunctional catalysts, with particular emphasis on the role of the oxide. The nature of the metal oxide, the modification of oxides to improve catalytic performance in CO2 hydrogenation and the reaction mechanisms are discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of the catalytic conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbons are briefly presented.

Abstract:Facing greenhouse effects and the rapid exhaustion of fossil fuel, CO2 electrochemical reduction presents a promising method of environmental protection and energy transformation. Low onset potential, large current density, high faradaic efficiency (FE), and long-time stability are required for industrial production, due to economic costs and energy consumption. This minireview showcases the recent progress in catalyst design and engineering technology in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on copper based-catalysts. We focus on strategies optimizing the performance of copper-based catalysts, such as single-atom catalysts, doping, surface modification, crystal facet engineering, etc., and reactor design including gas diffusion layer, membrane electrode assembly, etc., in enhancing target electroreduction products including methane, methanol, ethylene, and C2+ oxygenates. The determination of the correlation and the developed technology might be helpful for future applications in the industry.

Abstract:To date, copper-based catalysts are one of the most prominent catalysts that can electrochemically reduce CO 2 towards high-value fuels or chemicals, such as ethylene, ethanol, acetic acid. However, the chemically active feature of Cu-based catalysts hinders the understanding of the intrinsic catalytic active sites during the initial and the operative processes of electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). The identification and engineering of active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts are thereby vital to further improve the activity, selectivity, and durability of Cu-based catalysts for high-performance CO 2 RR. In this regard, four triggers for the dynamic evolution of catalysts were introduced in detail. Afterward, three typical active-site theories during the dynamic reconstruction of catalysts were discussed. In addition, the strategies in catalyst design were summarized according to the latest reports of Cu-based catalysts for CO 2 RR, including the tuning of electronic structure, controlling of the external potential, and regulation of local catalytic environment. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives were provided to inspire more investigations and studies on the intrinsic active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts, which could promote the optimization of the catalyst system to further improve the performance of CO 2 RR.

Abstract:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been emerging as a high‐ potential approach for CO2 utilization using renewables. When copper (Cu) based catalysts are used, this platform can produce multi‐carbon (C2+) fuels and chemicals with almost net‐zero emission, contributing to the closure of the anthropogenic carbon cycle. Nonetheless, the rational design and development of Cu‐based catalysts are critical toward the realization of highly selective and efficient CO2 electroreduction. In this review, first the latest advances in Cu‐catalyzed CO2 electroreduction in the product selectivity and electrocatalytic activity are briefly summarized. Then, recent theoretical and mechanistic studies of CO2 electroreduction on Cu‐based catalysts are investigated, which serve as programs to design catalysts. Strategies for devising Cu catalysts that aim at promoting different key elementary steps for hydrocarbon and C2+ oxygenates production are further summarized. Moreover, challenges in understanding the mechanism, operando investigation of Cu catalysts and reactions, and systems' influences are also presented. Finally, the future prospects of CO2 electroreduction are discussed.

Abstract:Thermocatalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) offers a promising approach to achieving net negative emissions by transforming CO2 into value‐added products like carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and methanol (MeOH). The design of catalysts plays a pivotal role in CO2 hydrogenation, particularly in configuring effective catalytic sites. In this review, we first introduce important characterization techniques for CO2 hydrogenation catalysts and discuss the identification of the catalytic sites in CO2 hydrogenation catalysts, including those for hydrogen (H2) activation, CO2 adsorption/activation, and others. We then delve into reaction systems that utilize single and/or multiple catalytic sites for processes such as the reverse water‐gas shift (RWGS), CO2 methanation, and MeOH synthesis, highlighting how the multiple‐site configurations can significantly influence catalytic activity and selectivity. Catalytic Sites Contiguity (CSC) is finally introduced to emphasize the critical relationship between the spatial arrangement of catalytic sites and the efficiency of reactant activation and conversion. Specific examples in MeOH synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation are presented to illustrate the impact of CSC on catalytic performance, offering insights into the potential for optimizing CO2 hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO2RR), which converts CO2 into various hydrocarbons or alcohols, has been extensively researched because it promises a sustainable energy economy. However, only copper (Cu) can currently achieve stable and efficient hydrocarbon conversion in the eCO2RR. Therefore, understanding the catalytic mechanisms and summarizing the research progress on synthesis strategies of Cu catalysts are essential for the eCO2RR. This paper reviews Cu catalysts with different surface states of Cu catalysts: oxide-derived Cu, Cu nanoparticles, Cu single atoms, and Cu nanoclusters. It then reviews the development and progress of different Cu-catalyst preparation methods in recent years, focusing on the activity and selectivity of materials. Besides revealing the tendencies of catalytic selection and deep reactive mechanisms of Cu catalysts with four different surface states, this review can guide the subsequent construction of catalysts and provides an understanding of catalytic mechanisms.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO 2 R) is an attractive pathway to store carbon and renewable energy as chemical bonds in multi-carbon products. However, the complex multi-step reaction processes set huge obstacles for the direct conversion of CO 2 to C 2+ products. A strategy that uses carbon monoxide (CO) as a "transfer station" to produce C 2+ at improved selectivity and reaction rates via the tandem ECO 2 R to CO and electrochemical CO reduction (ECOR) has attracted a lot attention. In this review, we focus on the design strategy of Cu-based electrocatalysts toward the formation of specific C 2+ products in ECOR. Representative design strategies for catalysts engineering are summarized in various aspects, and the most recent research in the improvement of electrolysis reactor is included. Finally, the main challenges and the future prospects in this research field are expounded. These insights and perspectives offer meaningful guidance for designing Cu-based electrocatalytic system with enhanced C 2+ product selectivity.

Abstract:Copper-based catalyst is uniquely positioned to catalyze the hydrocarbon formations through electrochemical CO 2 reduction. The catalyst design freedom is limited for alloying copper with H-affinitive elements represented by platinum group metals because the latter would easily drive the hydrogen evolution reaction to override CO 2 reduction. We report an adept design of anchoring atomically dispersed platinum group metal species on both polycrystalline and shape-controlled Cu catalysts, which now promote targeted CO 2 reduction reaction while frustrating the undesired hydrogen evolution reaction. Notably, alloys with similar metal formulations but comprising small platinum or palladium clusters would fail this objective. With an appreciable amount of CO-Pd 1 moieties on copper surfaces, facile CO * hydrogenation to CHO * or CO-CHO * coupling is now viable as one of the main pathways on Cu(111) or Cu(100) to selectively produce CH 4 or C 2 H 4 through Pd-Cu dual-site pathways. The work broadens copper alloying choices for CO 2 reduction in aqueous phases.

Abstract:Among various studied catalysts, copper-based electrocatalysts can convert CO2 into hydrocarbons. Two main challenges in this research area are low selectivity, especially for value-added C2+ products and the high overpotentials required to initiate carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). The interaction between copper and oxygen has always been inevitable in the design of copper-based catalysts owing to the intrinsic activity of copper and the oxygen-rich environment we live in. Recently, due to the unprecedented development of in-situ characterization, continuously increasing attention has been paid to oxygen species, which is usually accounting for the highest proportion of metalloid composition in copper-based catalysts. Herein, we have summarized the research progress on oxygen-containing copper catalysts, both experimentally and theoretically, and revealed the evolution of oxygen and the relationship between catalytic performance and oxygen species. It is found that the existence of subsurface oxygen in the electrochemical interface of copper-based electrodes has been proved both by in-situ characterization and theoretical simulation, which is also essential for efficient CO2RR to C2+ products. Additionally, selectivity to C2+ products is basically boosted in three ways: facilitating the conversion of CO2 from physical adsorption to chemical adsorption, strengthening intermediate binding and optimizing the adsorption configuration of CO2. It is expected that this review will provide clue for utilizing oxygen to enhance C2+ selectivity in the design of copper-based catalysts.

Abstract:Active sites and structure–activity relationships for methanol synthesis from a stoichiometric mixture of CO2 and H2 were investigated for a series of coprecipitated Cu-based catalysts with temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2O decomposition. Experiments in a reaction chamber attached to an XPS instrument show that metallic Cu exists on the surface of both reduced and spent catalysts and there is no evidence of monovalent Cu+ species. This finding provides reassurance regarding the active oxidation state of Cu in methanol synthesis catalysts because it is observed with 6 compositions possessing different metal oxide additives, Cu particle sizes, and varying degrees of ZnO crystallinity. Smaller Cu particles demonstrate larger turnover frequencies (TOF) for methanol formation, confirming the structure sensitivity of this reaction. No correlation between TOF and lattice strain in Cu crystallites is observed suggesting this structural parameter is not responsible for the activity. Moreover, changes in the observed rates may be ascribed to relative distribution of different Cu facets as more open and low-index surfaces are present on the catalysts containing small Cu particles and amorphous or well-dispersed ZnO. In general, the activity of these systems results from large Cu surface area, high Cu dispersion, and synergistic interactions between Cu and metal oxide support components, illustrating that these are key parameters for developing fundamental mechanistic insight into the performance of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.
