Abstract:Heterogeneous Cu/ZnO-based catalysts are widely used for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, but limitations remain for industrial applications. These include achieving high methanol selectivity and conversion and mitigating deactivation by water poisoning. Part I of this review explores the role of active sites on Cu/ZnO-based catalysts in CO2 conversion. The synergistic interaction between copper and zinc oxide is emphasised, particularly regarding interfacial effects on carbon monoxide activation and formate formation. The discussion covers theoretical and experimental perspectives on active site characteristics, including defects, vacancies, steps and strain. Additionally, the review explores the connection between Cu/ZnO-based catalysts properties and methanol synthesis activity.

Abstract:The methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation is the most promising research direction in the utilization of CO2 ,in which the research of catalysts is the key point.This review focuses on the copper-based catalysts and summarizes the effect factors including copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support on the activity,methanol selectivity and stability of copper-based catalyst.The preparation methods have huge influences on the copper dispersion,copper particle diameter and the interaction between metal copper and support which could then affect the catalytic performance.Developments based on the co-precipitation are the research trend of catalysts preparation in nowadays.Improving copper dispersion,decreasing copper particle diameter and increasing interaction between metal copper and support have different effects on the catalytic performance of this reaction.This review of the researches above provides the references for the development of high activity, high methanol selectivity and good stability new catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to methanol is a promising way to extenuate the adverse effects of CO2 emission, global warming and energy shortage. Understanding the fundamental features of CO2 activation and hydrogenation at the molecular level is essential for carbon utilization and sustainable chemical production in the current climate crisis. This review explores the recent advances in understanding the design of catalysts with desired active sites, including single‐atom, dual‐atom, interface, defects/vacancies and promoters/dopants. We focused on the design of various catalytic systems to enhance their catalytic performances by stabilizing active metal in a catalyst, identifying the unique structure of active species, and engineering coordination environments of active sites. Mechanistic insights provided by advanced operando and in situ spectroscopies were also discussed. Moreover, the review highlights the key factors affecting active sites and reaction mechanisms, such as local environments, oxidation states, and metal‐support interactions. By integrating recent advancements and relating knowledge gaps this review aims to endow an inclusive overview of the field and guide future research toward more efficient and selective catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Abstract:This literature review examines the hydrogen spillover mechanisms on Cu/ZnO-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. The production of methanol from CO2 is an attractive process for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and producing a valuable chemical feedstock. Cu/ZnO-based catalysts are known to exhibit high activity and selectivity towards methanol production, and the hydrogen spillover effect is believed to play a crucial role in their performance. The review discusses the current understanding of the hydrogen spillover mechanism, including the nature of the active sites and the factors that affect spillover efficiency. It also summarizes the recent advances in catalyst design, such as the use of promoters and dopants, to enhance the hydrogen spillover effect and improve catalytic performance. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the hydrogen spillover mechanism on Cu/ZnO-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, highlighting the potential of this technology for sustainable methanol production.

Abstract:Copper-zinc-alumina (Cu/ZnO/Al2O3) has been utilized as the leading catalyst for industrial methanol synthesis via hydrogenation of CO and CO2 for more than 50 years. Understanding the nature of active Zn sites at the atomic level is vital for gaining insight into the reaction mechanism and rational design of more efficient Cu/ZnO catalysts for methanol synthesis but remains greatly challenging and has been intensively debated for decades. In this mini-review, we first describe the fundamental insights obtained from well-defined model catalysts and then summarize the recent experimental evidence with respect to dynamic structural and electronic changes in the active Zn phase under realistic working conditions by in situ/operando microscopy/spectroscopy and surface site titration using probing molecules. In the following, we discuss the catalytic mechanism of diverse active structures by theoretical calculations and simulations. Therefore, the critical role of interfacial sites between metallic Cu and ZnO, especially those with oxygen defects, in methanol synthesis via CO2 hydrogenation is emphasized. Finally, we discuss the technical challenges and perspectives in understanding the origins of this Cu-ZnO synergy and rational design of next-generation Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.

Dual-site Activation of H2 over Cu/ZnAl2O4 Boosting CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Abstract:Methanol synthesis derived from CO2 hydrogenation has attracted great attention in terms of CO2 recycling while suffering from the low activity and sintering of copper species. Herein, we unveil the remarkable activity (11.3%) and methanol STY (242 gCH3OH kgcat -1 h-1) of 8 wt% Cu/ZnAl2O4 at 220 degrees C and 3 MPa, far surpassing that of conventional 8 wt% Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 composite oxides (6.8% for CO2 conversion and 144 gCH3OH kgcat-1h- 1 for methanol STY). The brilliant capability of H2 dissociation over Cu/ZnAl2O4 promotes methanol production due to the strong metal-support interaction. In-depth characterization points that the interstitial H atoms in ZnAl2O4 support contribute to the generation of the formate species, whose hydrogenation to methanol is participated by the H atoms dissociated from Cu nanoparticles. Dual-site activation of H2 allows an acceleration of methanol synthesis. This work offers a new avenue to modify catalyst structure for effectual CO2 hydrogenation under moderate conditions.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is a significant approach to tackle the problem of global warming and simultaneously meet the demand for the portable fuel. Cu-ZnO catalysts with various kinds of promoters have received wide attention. However, the role of promoter and the form of active sites in CO2 hydrogenation are still in debate. Here, various molar ratios of ZrO2 were added into the Cu-ZnO catalysts to tune the distributions of Cu0 and Cu+ species. A volcano-like trend between the ratio of Cu+/ (Cu+ + Cu0) and the amount of ZrO2 is presented, among which the CuZn10Zr (the molar ratio of ZrO2 is 10%) catalyst reaches the highest value. Correspondingly, the maximum value of space-time yield to methanol with 0.65 gMeOH/(gcat·hr) is obtained on CuZn10Zr at reaction conditions of 220°C and 3 MPa. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that dual active sites are proposed during CO2 hydrogenation over CuZn10Zr catalyst. The exposed Cu0 takes participate in the activation of H2, while on the Cu+ species, the intermediate of formate from the co-adsorption of CO2 and H2 prefers to be further hydrogenated to CH3OH than decomposing into the by-product of CO, yielding a high selectivity of methanol.

Abstract:The conversion of C1 molecules, COx (CO and CO2), to valuable chemical products has garnered ever-increasing attention. Among many routes, the hydrogenation via thermal catalysis is particularly promising as a key clean energy technology with the increasing supply of green H2. Zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts exhibit exceptional catalytic performance in the COx hydrogenation to value-added hydrocarbons, especially in combination with zeolite. This review overviews the recent achievements in understanding the active sites and reaction mechanisms of COx hydrogenation on zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts, focusing on three most-studied zinc-based mixed oxide catalysts, namely ZnCrOx, ZnAlOx and ZnZrOx. The challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts are widely used in methanol synthesis due to their low cost and high catalytic activity. The structural and surface characteristics of Cu are crucial to the formation of the active sites for methanol production. In this study, a series of methods for the synthesis of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 are employed to modulate the catalyst structure and catalytic efficiency for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. A correlation of catalytic activity with the Cu0 surface area and Cu particle sizes has been established. The Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst derived from hydrotalcite-like precursor (CZA-LDH) exhibits the maximum Cu0 specific surface area, the smallest Cu particle size, and high dispersion of elements, yielding the largest methanol production rate, which is comparable to the commercial Cu catalyst. Stability testing shows that the CZA-LDH catalyst can retain ∼94% of the initial activity. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicates that HCOO*, CH3O* intermediates, and product CH3OH are generated on the catalyst surface, and the reaction follows the formate pathway.

The ZnO-ZrO2 2 solid solution catalyst has been demonstrated to be an excellent catalyst, and the dual active site of Zn-O-Zr has been a key active site. However, the actual surface configuration of Zn and Zr and how CO2 2 and H2 2 are activated on the active sites remain unclear. Here, our research shows that there is a synergetic effect of dual active sites in the ZnO-ZrO2 2 catalyst for CO2 2 hydrogenation to methanol. In the 5%ZnO-ZrO2 2 catalyst, which has a low density of Zn-O-Zr sites, the dominant form of zinc coordination is as an isolated Zn site. The main coordination form of 20%ZnO-ZrO2 2 catalyst with moderate density of the Zn-O-Zr site is the (Zn)-OZr-O-(Zn) site. The main coordination form of 40% ZnO-ZrO2 2 catalyst with high density of the Zn-O-Zr site is (Zn)-O-(Zn) site. The catalyst with a Zn-O-Zr site of moderate density exhibits more efficient activation of H2 2 and CO2 2 and a lower energy barrier for the rate-determining step, which leads to superior catalytic activity. Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to methanol is a practical approach to mitigating its greenhouse effect in the environment while generating good economic profits. Though applicable on the industrial scale through the syngas route, the catalyst of Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 suffers from a series of technical problems when converting CO 2 to methanol directly, which include low single-pass conversion, low methanol selectivity, requiring high pressure and fast deactivation by the reverse water gas shift reaction. Over the years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to proffering solutions to these problems by modifying the existing catalyst or developing new active catalysts. However, the open question is if this type of widely used industrial catalyst still promising for CO 2 methanolizing reaction or not? This paper reviews the history of the methanol production in industry, the impact of CO 2 emission on the environment, and analyzes the possibility of the Cu/ZnO-based catalysts for the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol. We not only address the theoretical and technical aspects but also provide insightful views on catalyst development.

Abstract:Active sites and structure–activity relationships for methanol synthesis from a stoichiometric mixture of CO2 and H2 were investigated for a series of coprecipitated Cu-based catalysts with temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2O decomposition. Experiments in a reaction chamber attached to an XPS instrument show that metallic Cu exists on the surface of both reduced and spent catalysts and there is no evidence of monovalent Cu+ species. This finding provides reassurance regarding the active oxidation state of Cu in methanol synthesis catalysts because it is observed with 6 compositions possessing different metal oxide additives, Cu particle sizes, and varying degrees of ZnO crystallinity. Smaller Cu particles demonstrate larger turnover frequencies (TOF) for methanol formation, confirming the structure sensitivity of this reaction. No correlation between TOF and lattice strain in Cu crystallites is observed suggesting this structural parameter is not responsible for the activity. Moreover, changes in the observed rates may be ascribed to relative distribution of different Cu facets as more open and low-index surfaces are present on the catalysts containing small Cu particles and amorphous or well-dispersed ZnO. In general, the activity of these systems results from large Cu surface area, high Cu dispersion, and synergistic interactions between Cu and metal oxide support components, illustrating that these are key parameters for developing fundamental mechanistic insight into the performance of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.

Abstract:Developing the technology of CO2 hydrogenation into methanol can not only alleviate environmental problems such as greenhouse effect, but also effectively promote the utilization of CO2 resources. In general, Cu-based catalysts have been extensively studied due to its low cost and the effective synthesis of methanol. Thus, this review is to be reported based on Cu-based catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation. The specific goal of this review is to provide some insights into the structural and surface properties of Cu-based catalysts and their functions on the reaction mechanisms, and further affecting on the catalytic selectivity, stability, and activity for the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. A vital issue discussed is the fundamental understanding of active sites, reaction mechanisms, and interactions (active metal-support, active metal-promoter, bimetal) in determining the catalytic performance. Through a comprehensive overview on Cu-based systems for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, it could provide some useful information to go into CO2 hydrogenation to methanol for the outsider, and promote the design and synthesis of novel and efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts have been widely applied as industrial catalysts for methanol synthesis from syngas, but suffers low activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This study establishes highly active Cu catalysts through modulation of the composite of Al2O3 and ZrO2 in Cu/ZnO-based catalysts. The composition of Al2O3 and ZrO2 impacts the Cu dispersion, exposed surface area of Cu, the Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio and surface basicity. An appropriate content of Al2O3 and ZrO2 presents the higher Cu surface area, desirable ratio of Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) and moderate-strong basic sites for effective CO2 adsorption/activation, giving rise to higher space-time yield of methanol (up to 648 gCH3OH·kgcat −1·h−1) than the commercial Cu catalyst. STY of methanol can be correlated with Cu surface area and Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio under the investigated conditions. The mechanistic analysis demonstrates that surface formate and methoxy species are the major intermediates. The methanol formation principally follows the formate-methoxy intermediate pathway.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation to methanol can play an important role in meeting the sustainability goals of the chemical industry. In this study, we investigated in detail the role of the Cu-CeO2 interactions for methanol synthesis, emphasizing the role of the copper surface and interface sites between copper and ceria for the hydrogenation of CO2 and CO. A combined CO2-N2O titration approach was developed to quantify the exposed metallic copper sites and ceria oxygen vacancies in reduced Cu/CeO2 catalysts. Extensive characterization shows that copper dispersion is strongly enhanced by strong Cu-CeO2 interactions in comparison to Cu/SiO2. CO2 hydrogenation activity data show that the Cu/CeO2 catalysts displayed higher methanol selectivity compared to a reference Cu/SiO2 catalyst. The improved methanol selectivity stems from inhibition of the reverse water-gas-shift activity. The role of CO in CO2-to-methanol conversion was studied by steady-state and transient cofeeding activity measurements together with (quasi) in situ characterization (TPH, XPS, SSITKA, and IR spectroscopy). The Cu-CeO2 interface provides active sites for the direct hydrogenation of CO to methanol via a formyl intermediate. Cofeeding of small amounts of CO2 to a CO/H-2 mixture poisons these interfacial sites due to the formation of carbonate-like species. Methanol synthesis proceeds mainly via CO2 hydrogenation in which the metallic Cu surface provides the active sites.

Abstract:Regarding the still increasing CO2 emissions and the accompanied imminent climate change, utilization of CO2-containing exhaust gases is one of the major opportunities to lower CO2 emissions while obtaining valuable products in parallel. Methanol as one of today's key platform chemicals can be industrially produced from these exhaust gases by heterogeneously catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation. This review elaborates why the Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst is still the most promising candidate to catalyze CO2 hydrogenation from exhaust gases to reduce CO2 emissions in the short term. It emphasizes catalyst lifetime and deactivation as well as catalyst poisoning, which are significant factors considering the use of impurity-containing exhaust gases. Besides modifications of the Cu/ZnO system, completely different catalysts are discussed regarding their usability and comparability to the conventional Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract:A novel synthesis route based on reverse co-precipitation under ultrasound irradiation has led to Cu–ZnO/ZrO2 catalysts (Znat/Cuat, 0–3; ZrO2, 42–44 wt%) with a remarkable development of total surface area (SABET, 120–180 m2/g) and very high dispersion (3–58%) and exposure (MSA 9–63 m2/g) of the active Cu phase. The activity pattern in the hydrogenation of CO2 to CH3OH (TR, 433–533 K; PR, 1.0–3.0 MPa) was addressed in comparison with a commercial Cu–ZnO/Al2O3 methanol synthesis catalyst. Volcano-shaped trends in total and metal surface area signal an optimum zinc loading (Zn/Cu, 0.3–0.7), ensuring higher concentration of active sites and methanol productivity values, whereas the basic relationships among dispersion, reducibility, and TOF indicate a structurally sensitive character of the title reaction and a superior reactivity of poorly dispersed Cu particles. Thermodynamic analysis of the reaction stream revealed that methanol formation proceeds along a parallel path, whereas a stronger “water affinity” accounts for the poorer performance of the conventional alumina-based catalyst compared with zirconia-based ones.

Abstract:Although chemical promotion led to essential improvements in Cu-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, surpassing structural limitations such as active phase aggregation under reaction conditions remains challenging. In this report, we improved the textural properties of Cu/In2O3/CeO2 and Cu/In2O3/ZrO2 catalysts by coating the nanoparticles with a mesoporous SiO2 shell. This strategy limited particle size up to 3.5 nm, increasing metal dispersion and widening the metal-metal oxide interface region. Chemometric analysis revealed that these structures could maintain high activity and selectivity in a wide range of reaction conditions, with methanol space-time yields up to 4 times higher than those of the uncoated catalysts.
