Abstract:We show the existence of a constant $c > 0$ such that, for all positive integers $n$, there exist integers $1 \leq a_1 < \ldots < a_k \leq n$ such that there are at least $cn^2$ distinct integers of the form $\sum_{i=u}^{v}a_i$ with $1 \leq u \leq v \leq k$. This answers a question of Erdős and Graham. We also prove a non-trivial upper bound on the maximum number of distinct integers of this form and address several open problems.

Abstract:In 1970,R.L.Graham asked if the following is true: Let A be a finite sequence of n different positive integers a_i,1≤i≤n.Then(max)i,ja_i(a_i,a_j)≥n.Many number theorists have studied the problem.In 1996,this old conjecture though long and complicated,was proved correct in an outstandingly original by Balasubramanian and Soundararajan.Recently,Granville and Roesler conjectured that the largest element of the set agcd(a,b),bgcd(a,b),a∈A,b∈B is≥min(|A|,(|B|)),which generalizes Graham's conjecture.In this paper the conjecture is verified when both A and B have a prime.

Abstract:Ron Graham's Sequence is a surprising bijection from non-negative integers to non-negative, non-prime integers that was introduced by Ron Graham in the June 1986 "Problems" column of $\textit{Mathematics Magazine}$, and which later appeared in Problem A2 of the 2013 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. We describe some properties of this function, give an algorithm for computing its values in pseudo-polynomial time, and prove a 22 year-old conjecture about an upper bound for the function.

Abstract:Answering a question of Erdős and Graham, we show that for each fixed positive rational number $x$ the number of ways to write $x$ as a sum of reciprocals of distinct positive integers each at most $n$ is $2^{(c_x + o(1))n}$ for an explicit constant $c_x$ increasing with $x$.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham proposed to determine the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s = 1$ and asked, among other things, whether that number could be as large as $2^{n - o(n)}$. We show that the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s \leq 1$ is smaller than $2^{0.93n}$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Erdős posed the question whether there exist infinitely many sets of consecutive numbers whose least common multiple (lcm) exceeds the lcm of another, larger set with greater consecutive numbers. In this paper, we answer this question affirmatively by proving that the ratio of the lcm's can be made arbitrarily large.

On Erdős sums of almost primes

Abstract:In 1935, Erdős proved that the sums $f_k=\sum_n 1/(n\log n)$, over integers $n$ with exactly $k$ prime factors, are bounded by an absolute constant, and in 1993 Zhang proved that $f_k$ is maximized by the prime sum $f_1=\sum_p 1/(p\log p)$. According to a 2013 conjecture of Banks and Martin, the sums $f_k$ are predicted to decrease monotonically in $k$. In this article, we show that the sums restricted to odd integers are indeed monotonically decreasing in $k$, sufficiently large. By contrast, contrary to the conjecture we prove that the sums $f_k$ increase monotonically in $k$, sufficiently large. Our main result gives an asymptotic for $f_k$ which identifies the (negative) secondary term, namely $f_k = 1 - (a+o(1))k^2/2^k$ for an explicit constant $a= 0.0656\cdots$. This is proven by a refined method combining real and complex analysis, whereas the classical results of Sathe and Selberg on products of $k$ primes imply the weaker estimate $f_k=1+O_{\varepsilon}(k^{\varepsilon-1/2})$. We also give an alternate, probability-theoretic argument related to the Dickman distribution. Here the proof reduces to showing a sequence of integrals converges exponentially quickly to $e^{-\gamma}$, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let p1,...,pr be pairwise distinct primes. From a theorem of Kummer, each prime pj can divide 2nn at most 1+logn/logpj times. We show that, for all ε>0 , if p1,...,pr are sufficiently large in terms of r and ε , then there exist infinitely many positive integers n such that each pj divides 2nn at most ε(1+logn/logpj) times. We connect this result to a famous conjecture by Graham on whether there are infinitely many integers n such that 2nn is coprime to 105.

On several irrationality problems for Ahmes series

Abstract:Using basic tools of mathematical analysis and elementary probability theory we address several problems on the irrationality of series of distinct unit fractions, $\sum_k 1/a_k$. In particular, we study subseries of the Lambert series $\sum_k 1/(t^k-1)$ and two types of irrationality sequences $(a_k)$ introduced by Paul Erdős and Ronald Graham. Next, we address a question of Erdős, who asked how rapidly a sequence of positive integers $(a_k)$ can grow if both series $\sum_k 1/a_k$ and $\sum_k 1/(a_k+1)$ have rational sums. Our construction of double exponentially growing sequences $(a_k)$ with this property generalizes to any number $d$ of series $\sum_k 1/(a_k+j)$, $j=0,1,2,\ldots,d-1$, and, in particular, also gives a positive answer to a question of Erdős and Ernst Straus on the interior of the set of $d$-tuples of their sums. Finally, we prove the existence of a sequence $(a_k)$ such that all well-defined sums $\sum_k 1/(a_k+t)$, $t\in\mathbb{Z}$, are rational numbers, giving a negative answer to a conjecture by Kenneth Stolarsky.

Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... let S-n be the sum of the first n primes. We mainly show that the sequence a(n) = (n)root S-n/n (n = 1, 2, 3, ... ) is strictly decreasing, and moreover the sequence a(n+1)/a(n) (n = 10, 11, ... ) is strictly increasing. We also formulate similar conjectures involving twin primes or partitions of integers.

Abstract:It is shown that if every odd integer $n > 5$ is the sum of three primes, then every even integer $n > 2$ is the sum of two primes. A conditional proof of Goldbach's conjecture, based on Cramér's conjecture, is presented. Theoretical and experimental results available on Goldbach's conjecture allow that a less restrictive conjecture than Cramér's conjecture be used in the conditional proof. A basic result of the Maier's paper on Cramér's model is criticized.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham asked whether any sparse enough admissible set of natural numbers can be translated into a subset of the primes. By using a greedy construction involving powers of primitive roots, we prove that there exist arbitrarily sparse infinite admissible sets that cannot be translated into a subset of the primes, thus answering this question in the negative. We present three additional constructions as well.

Abstract:It is an open question of Erdős as to whether the alternating series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{(-1)^n n}{p_n}$ is (conditionally) convergent, where $p_n$ denotes the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ prime. By using a random sifted model of the primes recently introduced by Banks, Ford, and the author, as well as variants of a well known calculation of Gallagher, we show that the answer to this question is affirmative assuming a suitably strong version of the Hardy--Littlewood prime tuples conjecture.

Abstract:Let $f(n)$ count the number of subsets of $\{1,...,n\}$ without an element dividing another. In this paper I show that $f(n)$ grows like the $n$-th power of some real number, in the sense that $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}f(n)^{1/n}$ exists. This confirms a conjecture of Cameron and Erd\"os, proposed in a paper where they studied a number of similar problems, including the well known "Cameron-Erd\"os os Conjecture" on counting sum-free subsets.

Abstract:Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $S$ be a sequence of $n$ integers in the interval $[0,n-1]$. If there is an $r$ such that any nonempty subsequence with sum $\equiv 0$ $\pmod n$ has length $=r,$ then $S$ has at most two distinct values. This proves a conjecture of R. L. Graham. A previous result of P. Erdős and E. Szemerédi shows the validity of this conjecture if $n$ is a large prime number.

Abstract:Let <math>n</math> and <math>r</math> be positive integers with <math>r≥2</math> and let <math>A={ai}i=1∞</math> be a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers. Let <math>SA,r(n):=∑i=1n1lcm(ai,…,ai+r−1)</math>. In 1978, Borwein showed that <math>SA,2(n)≤1−12n</math> with the equality occurring if and only if <math>ai=2i−1</math> for <math>1≤i≤n+1</math>. In 2017, Qian proved that <math>SA,r(n)≤Vr(n)</math> for <math>3≤r≤7</math> and characterized the first <math>n+r−1</math> terms of the sequence <math>A</math> such that <math>SA,r(n)=Vr(n)</math> holds, where <math>Vr(n)</math> depends only on <math>r</math> and <math>n</math>. In this paper, we further investigate <math>SA,r(n)</math> for <math>8≤r≤11</math> and we obtain the least upper bound <math>Ur</math> of <math>SA,r(n)</math> for all strictly increasing sequences <math>A</math> of positive integers and for all positive integers <math>n,</math> where <math>Ur</math> is a constant depending only on <math>r</math>.

Abstract:Let $a_1 = 1$ and, for $n > 1$, $a_n = a_{n-1} + a_{\left \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \right \rfloor}$. In this paper we will look at congruence properties and the growth rate of this sequence. First we will show that if $x \in \{1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 \}$, then the natural density of $n$ such that $a_n \equiv x \pmod{8}$ exists and equals $\frac{1}{6}$. Next we will prove that if $m \le 15$ is not divisible by $4$, then the lower density of $n$ such that $a_n$ is divisible by $m$, is strictly positive. To put these results in a broader context, we will then posit a general conjecture about the density of $n$ such that $a_n \equiv x \pmod{m}$ for any given $x$ and any $m$ not divisible by $32$. Finally, we will show that there exists a function $f$ such that $n^{f(n)} < a_n < n^{f(n) + \epsilon}$ for all $\epsilon > 0$ and all large enough $n$.

Abstract:We help Alice play a certain "convergence game" against Bob and win the prize, which is a constructive solution to a problem by Erdős and Graham, posed in their 1980 book on open questions in combinatorial number theory. Namely, after several reductions using peculiar arithmetic identities, the game outcome shows that the set of points \[ \Big(\sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+1}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+2}\Big), \] obtained as $A$ ranges over infinite sets of positive integers, has a non-empty interior. This generalizes a two-dimensional result by Erdős and Straus.
