Abstract:Stewart (2013) proved that the biggest prime divisor of the $n$th term of a Lucas sequence of integers grows quicker than $n$, answering famous questions of Erdős and Schinzel. In this note we obtain a fully explicit and, in a sense, uniform version of Stewart's result.

Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... let S-n be the sum of the first n primes. We mainly show that the sequence a(n) = (n)root S-n/n (n = 1, 2, 3, ... ) is strictly decreasing, and moreover the sequence a(n+1)/a(n) (n = 10, 11, ... ) is strictly increasing. We also formulate similar conjectures involving twin primes or partitions of integers.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number, and let $S$ be the numerical semigroup generated by the prime numbers not less than $p$. We compare the orders of magnitude of some invariants of $S$ with each other, e. g., the biggest atom $u$ of $S$ with $p$ itself: By Harald Helfgott (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.7748" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.7748">arXiv:1312.7748</a> [math.NT]), every odd integer $N$ greater than five can be written as the sum of three prime numbers. There is numerical evidence suggesting that the summands of $N$ always can be chosen between $\frac N6$ and $\frac N2$. This would imply that $u$ is less than $6p$.

Abstract:We treat the functions $\star^k:{\mathbf N}\rightarrow{\mathbf N}$ where $\star:x\mapsto \star x := x(x+1)$. The set $\{\star^k x: \{x,k\}\subset{\mathbf N}\}$ offers a short and direct proof that the set of primes is infinite. We introduce the ``mother sequence,'' M, obtained by factoring into prime powers the terms of $2,3,4,\ldots$. For each $x\ge2$ we introduce the infinite sequence $x^\star$ obtained by factoring the terms of the ``gross $x$-sequence,'' $\gamma_\star(x) :=\langle x+1;\star x+1;\star^2x+1;\star^3x+1;\ldots\rangle$, into prime powers. It turns out that $\gamma_\star(1)$ is Sylvester's sequence, A00058 in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences - OEIS, and that $\gamma_\star(2)$ is the sequence A082732 in the OEIS. Theorem 2. For some integers $x\ge1$ there are primes that are factors of no member of $\{\star^kx: k\ge0\}$. Theorem 3. For each $x\ge2$ there is are infinitely many infinite subsequences ${\sf c}_j$ of M such that $x^\star = {\sf c}_j$ and such that the infinite family of term sets in M of those ${\sf c}_j$ is pairwise disjoint.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a variant of Fibonacci-like sequences that we call prime Fibonacci sequences, where one takes the sum of the previous two terms and returns the smallest odd prime divisor of that sum as the next term. We prove that these sequences always terminate in a power of two but can be extended infinitely to the left.

Abstract:We study the distribution of large prime factors of a random element $u$ of arithmetic sequences satisfying simple regularity and equidistribution properties. We show that if such an arithmetic sequence has level of distribution $1$ the large prime factors of $u$ tend to a Poisson-Dirichlet process, while if the sequence has any positive level of distribution the correlation functions of large prime factors tend to a Poisson-Dirichlet process against test functions of restricted support. For sequences with positive level of distribution, we also estimate the probability the largest prime factor of $u$ is greater than $u^{1-\epsilon}$, showing that this probability is $O(\epsilon)$.

Ergodic averages for sparse sequences along primes

Abstract:We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

Abstract:We apply the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle to a unique pair of prime number subsequences to determine whether these subsequences form a small set or a large set and thus whether the infinite sum of the inverse of their terms converges or diverges. In this paper, we analyze the complementary prime number subsequences P(prime) and P(double-prime) as well as revisit the twin prime subsequence P2.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, this article discusses a new elementary argument that seems to prove that the maximal prime gap of a finite sequence of primes p_1, p_2, ..., p_n <= x, satisfies max {p_(n+1) - p_n : p_n <= x} <= c1((logx)^2)/loglogx, c1 > 0 constant. Equivalently, it shows that the very short intervals (x, x + y] contain prime numbers for all y > c2((logx)^2)/loglogx, c2 > 0 constant, and sufficiently large x > 0.

Abstract:A deep conjecture of Montgomery and Soundararajan on the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals of length $h$ says that the third moment is bounded by $\ll h^{\frac {3}{2}-c}$ for some $c>0$. There is in the literature some conditional evidence towards this conjecture whilst in the first article to this series we gave the first instance of unconditional evidence in the form of a bound corresponding to $\ll h^{7/5+o(1)}$. In this article we push the exponent down to $\ll h^{1+o(1)}$ which more or less is expected to be best possible.

Abstract:Let $m \in \mathbb{N}$ be large. We show that there exist infinitely many primes $q_{1}< \cdot\cdot\cdot < q_{m+1}$ such that \[ q_{m+1}-q_{1}=O(e^{7.63m}) \] and $q_{j}+2$ has at most \[ \frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21 \] prime factors for each $1 \leq j \leq m+1$. This improves the previous result of Li and Pan, replacing $e^{7.63m}$ by $m^{4}e^{8m}$ and $\frac{7.36m}{\log 2} + \frac{4\log m}{\log 2} + 21$ by $\frac{16m}{\log 2} + \frac{5\log m}{\log 2} + 37$. The main inputs are the Maynard-Tao sieve, a minorant for the indicator function of the primes constructed by Baker and Irving, for which a stronger equidistribution theorem in arithmatic progressions to smooth moduli is applicable, and Tao's approach previously used to estimate $\sum_{x \leq n < 2x} \mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n)\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}(n+12)\omega_{n}$, where $\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{P}}$ stands for the characteristic function of the primes and $\omega_{n}$ are multidimensional sieve weights.

Abstract:Let $P^-(n)$ denote the smallest prime factor of a natural integer $n>1$. Furthermore let $\mu$ and $\omega$ denote respectively the Möbius function and the number of distinct prime factors function. We show that, given any set ${\scr P}$ of prime numbers with a natural density, we have $\sum_{P^-(n)\in \scr P}\mu(n)\omega(n)/n=0$ and provide a effective estimate for the rate of convergence. This extends a recent result of Alladi and Johnson, who considered the case when ${\scr P}$ is an arithmetic progression.
