Abstract:Stewart (2013) proved that the biggest prime divisor of the $n$th term of a Lucas sequence of integers grows quicker than $n$, answering famous questions of Erdős and Schinzel. In this note we obtain a fully explicit and, in a sense, uniform version of Stewart's result.

Abstract:In this paper we study mixed sums of primes and linear recurrences. We show that if m=2(mod 4) and m+1 is a prime then $(m^{2^n-1}-1)/(m-1)\not=m^n+p^a$ for any n=3,4,... and prime power p^a. We also prove that if a>1 is an integer, u_0=0, u_1=1 and u_{i+1}=au_i+u_{i-1} for i=1,2,3,..., then all the sums u_m+au_n (m,n=1,2,3,...) are distinct. One of our conjectures states that any integer n>4 can be written as the sum of an odd prime, an odd Fibonacci number and a positive Fibonacci number.

Abstract:We bound the greatest common divisor of two coprime multivariable polynomials evaluated at algebraic numbers, generalizing work of Levin, and going towards conjectured inequalities of Silverman and Vojta. As an application, we prove results on greatest common divisors of terms from two linear recurrence sequences, extending the results of Levin, who considered the case where the linear recurrences are simple, and improving recent results of Grieve and Wang. The proofs rely on Schmidt's Subspace Theorem.

Abstract:We combine transcendental methods and the modular approaches to the conjecture to show that the largest prime factor of is at least of size where is the -th iterate of the logarithm. This gives a substantial improvement on the best available estimates, which are essentially of size going back to work of Chowla in 1934. Using the same ideas, we also obtain significant progress on subexpoential bounds for the conjecture, which in a case gives the first improvement on a result by Stewart and Yu dating back over two decades. Central to our approach is the connection between Shimura curves and the conjecture developed by the author.

Abstract:LLet $x>1$ be a large number. This note shows that the largest prime factor of the quadratic product $\prod_{x\leq n\leq 2x}\left(n^2+1 \right)$ satisfies the relation $p \geq x^{3/2}$ as $x$ tends to infinity. This improves the current estimate $p \geq x^{1.279}$. In addition, it is shown that $n^2+1 $ has a large prime divisor in the interval $ p\in [x^{2-o(1)},x^2] $ for some $ n\geq x^{1-o(1)}$.

Abstract:Two sums over the inverse of the product of an integer n and its greatest prime factor G(n), are computed to first 13 decimal digits. These sums converge, but converge very slowly. They are transformed into sums involving Mertens' prime product with the remainder term which are estimated by means of Chebyshev's {\theta}-function.

Abstract:Write $T(n)$ as the sum of the reciprocals of the primes which divide $n$. Write $H(n) = \prod_{p|n}p/(p-1)$ where the product is over the prime divisors of $n$. We prove new bounds for $T(n)$ and $H(n)$ in terms of the smallest prime factor of $n$, under the assumption that $n$ is an odd perfect number. Some of the results also apply under the weaker assumption that $n$ is odd and primitive non-deficient.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of functions defined recursively on the set of natural numbers in terms of the greatest common divisor algorithm of two numbers and requiring a minimality condition. These functions are permutations, products of infinitely many cycles that depend on certain breaks in the natural numbers involving the primes, and some special products of primes with a density of approximately $29.4\%$. We show that these functions split into only two equivalence classes (modulo the natural equivalence relation of eventually identical maps): one is the class of the identity map and the other is generated by a map whose discrete derivative is almost periodic with ``periods" the primorial numbers.

Abstract:In his 1979 paper Samuel Wagstaff studied the problem of bounding the first prime in an arithmetic progression. In this paper we update a number of his computations using advances in hardware. Based on this we refine his conjecture on Primes in Arithmetic Progression and provide further numerical evidence in support of it. For instance we conjecture that for $n>3$ we have a bound of $3\phi(n)\log(n)\log(\phi(n))$ and verified this bound to $10^8$.

Abstract:We propose a new interpretation of the classical index of appearance for second order linear recursive sequences. It stems from the formula \[ C_{n}(t)-2 =\frac{\Delta}{Q^{n}}\ L_n^2,\ \ \ \text{where} \ \ t= (T^2-2Q)/Q, \ \Delta = T^2-4Q, \] connecting the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind $C_n(x)$ with the Lucas sequence defined for integer $T,Q\neq 0$ by the recursion $L_{n+1}= TL_n-QL_{n-1}, L_0=0, L_1 = 1$. We build on the results of \cite{L-W}. We prove that for any prime $r\geq 2$ the sets $\Pi_j(t,r), j=1,2,\dots$, of primes $p$ such that $j$ is the highest power of $r$ dividing the index of appearance, have prime density equal to $\frac{1}{(r+1)r^{j-1}}$, for $r$-generic values of $t$. We give also complete enumeration of non-generic cases and the appropriate density formulas. It improves on the work of Lagarias, \cite{L}, and Ballot, \cite{B1},\cite{B2},\cite{B3}, on the sets of prime divisors of sequences of "finite order". Our methods are sufficient to prove that for any linear recursive sequence of second order (with some trivial exceptions) the set of primes not dividing any element contains a subset of positive density. We consider also some applications in arithmetic dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a variant of Fibonacci-like sequences that we call prime Fibonacci sequences, where one takes the sum of the previous two terms and returns the smallest odd prime divisor of that sum as the next term. We prove that these sequences always terminate in a power of two but can be extended infinitely to the left.

Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... define S(n) as the smallest integer m > 1 such that those 2k(k - 1) mod m for k = 1, ... , n are pairwise distinct; we show that S(n) is the least prime greater than 2n - 2 and hence the value set of the function S(n) is exactly the set of all prime numbers. For every n = 4, 5, ... , we prove that the least prime p > 3n with p equivalent to 1 (mod 3) is just the least positive integer m such that 18k(3k - 1) (k = 1, ... , n) are pairwise distinct modulo m. For d is an element of {4, 6, 12} and n = 3, 4, ... , we show that the least prime p >= 2n - 1 with p equivalent to -1 (mod d) is the smallest integer m such that those (2k - 1)(d) for k = 1, ... , n are pairwise distinct modulo m. We also pose several challenging conjectures on primes. For example, we find a surprising recurrence for primes, namely, for every n = 10, 11, ... the (n + 1)-th prime p(n+1) is just the least positive integer m such that 2s(k)(2) (k = 1, ..., n) are pairwise distinct modulo m where s(k) = Sigma(k)(j=1) (-1)(k-j) p(j). Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... let S-n be the sum of the first n primes. We mainly show that the sequence a(n) = (n)root S-n/n (n = 1, 2, 3, ... ) is strictly decreasing, and moreover the sequence a(n+1)/a(n) (n = 10, 11, ... ) is strictly increasing. Abstract:We treat the functions $\star^k:{\mathbf N}\rightarrow{\mathbf N}$ where $\star:x\mapsto \star x := x(x+1)$. The set $\{\star^k x: \{x,k\}\subset{\mathbf N}\}$ offers a short and direct proof that the set of primes is infinite. We introduce the ``mother sequence,'' M, obtained by factoring into prime powers the terms of $2,3,4,\ldots$. For each $x\ge2$ we introduce the infinite sequence $x^\star$ obtained by factoring the terms of the ``gross $x$-sequence,'' $\gamma_\star(x) :=\langle x+1;\star x+1;\star^2x+1;\star^3x+1;\ldots\rangle$, into prime powers. It turns out that $\gamma_\star(1)$ is Sylvester's sequence, A00058 in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences - OEIS, and that $\gamma_\star(2)$ is the sequence A082732 in the OEIS. Theorem 2. For some integers $x\ge1$ there are primes that are factors of no member of $\{\star^kx: k\ge0\}$. Theorem 3.
