Abstract:We study symmetric bimatrix games that also have the common-payoff property, i.e., the two players receive the same payoff at any outcome of the game. Due to the symmetry property, these games are guaranteed to have symmetric Nash equilibria, where the two players play the same (mixed) strategy. While the problem of computing such symmetric equilibria in general symmetric bimatrix games is known to be intractable, namely PPAD-complete, this result does not extend to our setting. Indeed, due to the common-payoff property, the problem lies in the lower class CLS, ruling out PPAD-hardness. In this paper, we show that the problem remains intractable, namely it is CLS-complete. On the way to proving this result, as our main technical contribution, we show that computing a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point of a quadratic program remains CLS-hard, even when the feasible domain is a simplex.

On Covering Codes and Upper Bounds for the Dimension of Simple Games

Abstract:Consider a situation with $n$ agents or players where some of the players form a coalition with a certain collective objective. Simple games are used to model systems that can decide whether coalitions are successful (winning) or not (losing). A simple game can be viewed as a monotone boolean function. The dimension of a simple game is the smallest positive integer $d$ such that the simple game can be expressed as the intersection of $d$ threshold functions where each threshold function uses a threshold and $n$ weights. Taylor and Zwicker have shown that $d$ is bounded from above by the number of maximal losing coalitions. We present two new upper bounds both containing the Taylor/Zwicker-bound as a special case. The Taylor/Zwicker-bound imply an upper bound of ${n \choose n/2}$. We improve this upper bound significantly by showing constructively that $d$ is bounded from above by the cardinality of any binary covering code with length $n$ and covering radius $1$. This result supplements a recent result where Olsen et al. showed how to construct simple games with dimension $|C|$ for any binary constant weight SECDED code $C$ with length $n$. Our result represents a major step in the attempt to close the dimensionality gap for simple games.

Settling Some Open Problems on 2-Player Symmetric Nash Equilibria

Abstract:Over the years, researchers have studied the complexity of several decision versions of Nash equilibrium in (symmetric) two-player games (bimatrix games). To the best of our knowledge, the last remaining open problem of this sort is the following; it was stated by Papadimitriou in 2007: find a non-symmetric Nash equilibrium (NE) in a symmetric game. We show that this problem is NP-complete and the problem of counting the number of non-symmetric NE in a symmetric game is #P-complete. In 2005, Kannan and Theobald defined the "rank of a bimatrix game" represented by matrices (A, B) to be rank(A+B) and asked whether a NE can be computed in rank 1 games in polynomial time. Observe that the rank 0 case is precisely the zero sum case, for which a polynomial time algorithm follows from von Neumann's reduction of such games to linear programming. In 2011, Adsul et. al. obtained an algorithm for rank 1 games; however, it does not solve the case of symmetric rank 1 games. We resolve this problem.

The Weihrauch degree of finding Nash equilibria in multiplayer games

Abstract:Is there an algorithm that takes a game in normal form as input, and outputs a Nash equilibrium? If the payoffs are integers, the answer is yes, and lot of work has been done in its computational complexity. If the payoffs are permitted to be real numbers, the answer is no, for continuity reasons. It is worthwhile to investigate the precise degree of non-computability (the Weihrauch degree), since knowing the degree entails what other approaches are available (eg, is there a randomized algorithm with positive success change?). The two player case has already been fully classified, but the multiplayer case remains open and is addressed here. Our approach involves classifying the degree of finding roots of polynomials, and lifting this to systems of polynomial inequalities via cylindrical algebraic decomposition.

Determinacy of Schmidt's Game and Other Intersection Games

Abstract:Schmidt's game, and other similar intersection games have played an important role in recent years in applications to number theory, dynamics, and Diophantine approximation theory. These games are real games, that is, games in which the players make moves from a complete separable metric space. The determinacy of these games trivially follows from the axiom of determinacy for real games, $\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}$, which is a much stronger axiom than that asserting all integer games are determined, $\mathsf{AD}$. One of our main results is a general theorem which under the hypothesis $\mathsf{AD}$ implies the determinacy of intersection games which have a property allowing strategies to be simplified. In particular, we show that Schmidt's $(\alpha,\beta,\rho)$ game on $\mathbb{R}$ is determined from $\mathsf{AD}$ alone, but on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \geq 3$ we show that $\mathsf{AD}$ does not imply the determinacy of this game. We also prove several other results specifically related to the determinacy of Schmidt's game. These results highlight the obstacles in obtaining the determinacy of Schmidt's game from $\mathsf{AD}$.

Abstract:We study from a complexity theoretic standpoint the various solution concepts arising in cooperative game theory. We use as a vehicle for this study a game in which the players are nodes of a graph with weights on the edges, and the value of a coalition is determined by the total weight of the edges contained in it. The Shapley value is always easy to compute. The core is easy to characterize when the game is convex, and is intractable (NP-complete) otherwise. Similar results are shown for the kernel, the nucleolus, the ε-core, and the bargaining set. As for the von Neumann-Morgenstern solution, we point out that its existence may not even be decidable. Many of these results generalize to the case in which the game is presented by a hypergraph with edges of size k > 2.
On Winning Conditions of High Borel Complexity in Pushdown Games

Abstract:Some decidable winning conditions of arbitrarily high finite Borel complexity for games on finite graphs or on pushdown graphs have been recently presented by O. Serre in [ Games with Winning Conditions of High Borel Complexity, in the Proceedings of the International Conference ICALP 2004, LNCS, Volume 3142, p. 1150-1162 ]. We answer in this paper several questions which were raised by Serre in the above cited paper. We first show that, for every positive integer n, the class C_n(A), which arises in the definition of decidable winning conditions, is included in the class of non-ambiguous context free omega languages, and that it is neither closed under union nor under intersection. We prove also that there exists pushdown games, equipped with such decidable winning conditions, where the winning sets are not deterministic context free languages, giving examples of winning sets which are non-deterministic non-ambiguous context free languages, inherently ambiguous context free languages, or even non context free languages.

Abstract:Cooperative games provide a framework to study cooperation among self-interested agents. They offer a number of solution concepts describing how the outcome of the cooperation should be shared among the players. Unfortunately, computational problems associated with many of these solution concepts tend to be intractable---NP-hard or worse. In this paper, we incorporate complexity measures recently proposed by Feige and Izsak (2013), called dependency degree and supermodular degree, into the complexity analysis of coopera- tive games. We show that many computational problems for cooperative games become tractable for games whose dependency degree or supermodular degree are bounded. In particular, we prove that simple games admit efficient algorithms for various solution concepts when the supermodular degree is small; further, we show that computing the Shapley value is always in FPT with respect to the dependency degree. Finally, we observe that, while determining the dependency among players is computationally hard, there are efficient algorithms for special classes of games.

Abstract:Machine learning processes, e.g. ''learning in games'', can be viewed as non-linear dynamical systems. In general, such systems exhibit a wide spectrum of behaviors, ranging from stability/recurrence to the undesirable phenomena of chaos (or ''butterfly effect''). Chaos captures sensitivity of round-off errors and can severely affect predictability and reproducibility of ML systems, but AI/ML community's understanding of it remains rudimentary. It has a lot out there that await exploration. Recently, Cheung and Piliouras employed volume-expansion argument to show that Lyapunov chaos occurs in the cumulative payoff space, when some popular learning algorithms, including Multiplicative Weights Update (MWU), Follow-the-Regularized-Leader (FTRL) and Optimistic MWU (OMWU), are used in several subspaces of games, e.g. zero-sum, coordination or graphical constant-sum games. It is natural to ask: can these results generalize to much broader families of games? We take on a game decomposition approach and answer the question affirmatively. Among other results, we propose a notion of ''matrix domination'' and design a linear program, and use them to characterize bimatrix games where MWU is Lyapunov chaotic almost everywhere. Such family of games has positive Lebesgue measure in the bimatrix game space, indicating that chaos is a substantial issue of learning in games. For multi-player games, we present a local equivalence of volume change between general games and graphical games, which is used to perform volume and chaos analyses of MWU and OMWU in potential games.

Abstract:. Let Γ≡( N , v ) be a cooperative game with the player set N and characteristic function v : 2 N → R . An imputation of the game is in the core if no subset of players could gain advantage by splitting from the grand coalition of all players. It is well known that, for the flow game (and equivalently, for the linear production game), the core is always non-empty and a solution in the core can be found in polynomial time. In this paper, we show that, given an imputation x , it is NP -complete to decide x is not a member of the core, for the flow game. And because of the specific reduction we constructed, the result also holds for the linear production game.

Abstract:We consider a two player simultaneous-move game where the two players each select any permissible $n$-sided die for a fixed integer $n$. A player wins if the outcome of his roll is greater than that of his opponent. Remarkably, for $n>3$, there is a unique Nash Equilibrium in pure strategies. The unique Nash Equilibrium is for each player to throw the Standard $n$-sided die, where each side has a different number. Our proof of uniqueness is constructive. We introduce an algorithm with which, for any nonstandard die, we may generate another die that beats it.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we considered several models of the parlor game baccara chemin de fer, including Model B2 (a $2\times2^{484}$ matrix game) and Model B3 (a $2^5\times2^{484}$ matrix game), both of which depend on a positive-integer parameter $d$, the number of decks. The key to solving the game under Model B2 was what we called Foster's algorithm, which applies to additive $2\times2^n$ matrix games. Here "additive" means that the payoffs are additive in the $n$ binary choices that comprise a player II pure strategy. In the present paper, we consider analogous models of the casino game baccara chemin de fer that take into account the $100\,\alpha$ percent commission on Banker (player II) wins, where $0\le\alpha\le1/10$. Thus, the game now depends not just on the discrete parameter $d$ but also on a continuous parameter $\alpha$. Moreover, the game is no longer zero sum. To find all Nash equilibria under Model B2, we generalize Foster's algorithm to additive $2\times2^n$ bimatrix games. We find that, with rare exceptions, the Nash equilibrium is unique. We also obtain a Nash equilibrium under Model B3, based on Model B2 results, but here we are unable to prove uniqueness.

In addition, for Steiner tree games, we prove that testing the total balacedness is NP-hard.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a game of optimal stopping with incomplete information. There are two players of which only one is informed about the precise structure of the game. Observing the informed player the uninformed player is given the possibility to guess the missing information. We show that these games have a value which can be characterized as a viscosity solution to a fully non-linear variational PDE. Furthermore we derive a dual representation of the value function in terms of a minimization procedure. This representation allows under some additional assumptions to determine optimal strategies for the informed player.

Abstract:Recently, much work has been done in game theory towards understanding the bounded rationality of players in infinite games. This requires the strategies of realistic players to be restricted to have bounded resources of reasoning. (See [H. Simon, Decision and Organization, North--Holland, Amsterdam, 1972, pp. 161--176] for an extensive discussion; also see [X. Deng and C. H. Papadimitriou, Math. Oper. Res., 19 (1994), pp. 257--266], [C. Futia, J. Math. Econom., 4 (1977), pp. 289--299], [V. Knoblauch, Games Econom. Behav., 7 (1994), pp. 381--389], [E. Kalai and W. Stanford, Econometria, 56 (1988), pp. 397--410], [A. Neyman, Econom. Lett., 19 (1985), pp. 227--229], and [C. H. Papadimitriou, Game Theory Econom. Behav., 4 (1992), pp. 122--131].) In this paper, we discuss infinite two-person games, focusing on the case where our player follows a computable strategy and the adversary may use any strategy, which formulates the notion of computer against extremely formidable nature. In this context, we say that an infinite game is semicomputably determinate if either the adversary has a winning strategy or our player has a computable winning strategy.We show that, whereas all open games are semicomputably determinate, there is a semicomputably indeterminate closed game. Since we want to prove an indeterminacy result for closed games and since the adversary's strategy set is uncountable and our player's strategy set is countable, our proof for the indeterminacy result requires a new diagonalization technique, which might be useful in other similar cases. Our study of semicomputable games was inspired by online computing problems. In this direction, we discuss several possible applications to derandomization in online computing, with the restriction that the strategies of our player should be computable.We also study the power of randomization for the classical case where our player is allowed to play according to unrestricted strategies. An indeterminate game is obtained for which both players have a simple randomized winning strategy against all of the deterministic strategies of the opponent.
On the Decomposition of Differential Game

Abstract:To understand the complexity of the dynamic of learning in differential games, we decompose the game into components where the dynamic is well understood. One of the possible tools is Helmholtz's theorem, which can decompose a vector field into a potential and a harmonic component. This has been shown to be effective in finite and normal-form games. However, applying Helmholtz's theorem by connecting it with the Hodge theorem on $\mathbb{R}^n$ (which is the strategy space of differential game) is non-trivial due to the non-compactness of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Bridging the dynamic-strategic disconnect through Hodge/Helmoltz's theorem in differential games is then left as an open problem \cite{letcher2019differentiable}. In this work, we provide two decompositions of differential games to answer this question: the first as an exact scalar potential part, a near vector potential part, and a non-strategic part; the second as a near scalar potential part, an exact vector potential part, and a non-strategic part. We show that scalar potential games coincide with potential games proposed by \cite{monderer1996potential}, where the gradient descent dynamic can successfully find the Nash equilibrium. For the vector potential game, we show that the individual gradient field is divergence-free, in which case the gradient descent dynamic may either be divergent or recurrent.

Abstract:We introduce several methods of decomposition for two player normal form games. Viewing the set of all games as a vector space, we exhibit explicit orthonormal bases for the subspaces of potential games, zero-sum games, and their orthogonal complements which we call anti-potential games and anti-zero-sum games, respectively. Perhaps surprisingly, every anti-potential game comes either from the Rock-Paper-Scissors type games (in the case of symmetric games) or from the Matching Pennies type games (in the case of asymmetric games). Using these decompositions, we prove old (and some new) cycle criteria for potential and zero-sum games (as orthogonality relations between subspaces). We illustrate the usefulness of our decomposition by (a) analyzing the generalized Rock-Paper-Scissors game, (b) completely characterizing the set of all null-stable games, (c) providing a large class of strict stable games, (d) relating the game decomposition to the decomposition of vector fields for the replicator equations, (e) constructing Lyapunov functions for some replicator dynamics, and (f) constructing Zeeman games -games with an interior asymptotically stable Nash equilibrium and a pure strategy ESS.
