Abstract:Active and durable electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction are of critical importance to the commercial viability of direct methanol fuel cell technology. Unfortunately, current methanol oxidation electrocatalysts fall far short of expectations and suffer from rapid activity degradation. Here we report platinum–nickel hydroxide–graphene ternary hybrids as a possible solution to this long-standing issue. The incorporation of highly defective nickel hydroxide nanostructures is believed to play the decisive role in promoting the dissociative adsorption of water molecules and subsequent oxidative removal of carbonaceous poison on neighbouring platinum sites. As a result, the ternary hybrids exhibit exceptional activity and durability towards efficient methanol oxidation reaction. Under periodic reactivations, the hybrids can endure at least 500,000 s with negligible activity loss, which is, to the best of our knowledge, two to three orders of magnitude longer than all available electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Porous Pt and Pt–Ag alloy mesoflowers (MFs) with about 2μm in diameter and high porosity were synthesized using Ag mesoflowers as sacrificial template by galvanic reaction. The silver content in Pt–Ag alloys can be facilely controlled by nitric acid treatment. And the pure Pt MFs can be obtained by selective removal of silver element from Pt72Ag28 MFs electrochemically. Both Pt45Ag55, Pt72Ag28 and pure Pt show a high catalytic performance in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Especially, pure Pt MFs exhibited a 2 to 3 times current density enhancement in MOR compared with the commercial used Pt black, which can be attributed to their porous nanostructure with 3-dimentional nature and small crystal sizes.

Abstract:A universal approach for the highly‐efficient fabrication of homogeneously alloyed Platinum‐based alloy is proposed by high‐gravity technology. The greatly strengthened micro‐mixing and mass transfer can remarkedly improve the alloying degree and electronic structure. The optimized mass activity of rotating packed bedproducts for methanol oxidation reaction is 3.5 and 3.2 times higher than those of conventional beaker products and Pt/C. Platinum (Pt)‐based alloys have received considerable attention due to their compositional variability and unique electrochemical properties. However, homogeneous element distribution at the nanoscale, which is beneficial to various electrocatalytic reactions, is still a great challenge. Herein, a universal approach is proposed to synthesize homogeneously alloyed and size‐tunable Pt‐based nanoflowers utilizing high gravity technology. Owing to the significant intensification of micro‐mixing and mass transfer in unique high gravity shearing surroundings, five typical binary/ternary Pt‐based nanoflowers are instantaneously achieved at room temperature. As a proof‐of‐concept, as‐synthesized Platinum‐Silver nanoflowers (PtAg NFs) demonstrate excellent catalytic performance and anti‐CO poisoning ability for anodic methanol oxidation reaction with high mass activity of 1830 mA mgPt−1, 3.5 and 3.2 times higher than those of conventional beaker products and commercial Pt/C, respectively. The experiment in combination with theory calculations suggest that the enhanced performance is due to additional electronic transmission and optimized d‐band center of Pt caused by high alloying degree.

Abstract:Three-dimensional bimetallic nanoframes with high spatial diffusivity and surface heterogeneity possess remarkable catalytic activities owing to their highly exposed active surfaces and tunable electronic structure. Here we report a general one-pot strategy to prepare ultrathin octahedral Au 3 Ag nanoframes, with the formation mechanism explicitly elucidated through well-monitored temporal nanostructure evolution. Rich crystalline defects lead to lowered atomic coordination and varied electronic states of the metal atoms as evidenced by extensive structural characterizations. When used for electrocatalytic methanol oxidation, the Au 3 Ag nanoframes demonstrate superior performance with a high specific activity of 3.38 mA cm −2 , 3.9 times that of the commercial Pt/C. More intriguingly, the kinetics of methanol oxidation on the Au 3 Ag nanoframes is counter-intuitively promoted by carbon monoxide. The enhancement is ascribed to the altered reaction pathway and enhanced OH − co-adsorption on the defect-rich surfaces, which can be well understood from the d-band model and comprehensive density functional theory simulations.

Abstract:Unique Pt nanodendrites with controlled size were prepared by a rapid radiolysis route. The Pt nanodendrites display drastically enhanced electrochemical catalytic performances toward methanol oxidation. Abstract:A liquid phase approach was used for the synthesis of novel porous Pd nanoflowers by the self-organization of primary nanoparticle building blocks. Palladium acetylacetonate was used as the metal precursor with 1,2-hexadecanediol as the reduction agent. The porous Pd nanostructure obtained has an average size of 50 nm and was composed of three-dimensionally connected Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of 5.5 nm. The new Pd nanostructure has higher electrocatalytic activity and better stability for the electro-oxidation of methanol in an alkaline media than Pd nanoparticles.

Abstract:Alleviating the Pt‐based alloy catalysts poisoning by CO intermediates is significant for methanol oxidation reactions. Novel FePtRh nanoflowers with the Rh‐rich core and Fe‐rich shell are reported to effectively eliminate the CO intermediate poisoning during methanol oxidation reaction electrocatalysis with high mass activity and specific activity. This work offers a new way to design efficient Pt‐based alloy catalysts. Introducing oxophilic metals into Pt‐based alloy catalysts can effectively alleviate the poisoning by CO intermediates (CO*) during methanol oxidation reactions (MOR). However, excessive oxophilic metals on the surface of catalysts tend to form thermodynamically stable carbonyl compound‐like structures, occupying electrocatalytically active sites, which is not conducive to the enhancement of catalytic activity. Herein, a kind of surface segregated FePtRh nanoflowers for effectively eliminating the CO* poisoning during MOR electrocatalysis is presented. The FePtRh nanoflowers are constituted by the Rh‐rich core and Fe‐rich shell. The optimized Fe21Pt66Rh13/C shows a high mass activity of 3.90 A mgPt−1 and a specific activity of 4.85 mA cm−2. It is confirmed that the electron transfer from Pt to Rh or Fe atoms is beneficial for the higher anti‐CO poisoning ability, which mainly originate from the alloying of Rh atoms and surface‐segregated structures. Density functional theory calculations reveal the decreased electrons adsorbed by CO* on both Pt–Pt bridge sites and top sites weakens the strong adsorption energy between Pt atoms and CO* intermediates. The optimal nanoflowers also show excellent performance toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) with a high mass activity of 2.76 A mgPt−1 and the enhanced anti‐CO poisoning ability, as well as the improved stability.

Abstract:Tuning the chemical composition and surface structure of electrodes is demonstrated as a feasible and effective strategy to tailor advanced catalysts for energy electrocatalysis. In this work, hierarchical palladium-silver alloy nanosheets (PdAg NS) with the thickness ~7 atoms and rich atomic defects are successfully prepared, using the carbon monoxide (CO) confinement approach. The optimized Pd<sub>7</sub>Ag<sub>3</sub> NS/C exhibits 8.8 times higher catalytic peak current density and much better stability toward ethanol electrooxidation than Pd NS/C catalyst. The catalytic enhancement mechanism could be attributed to the synergetic effects among optimized electronic structure of Pd, novel architecture, and rich atomic defects.

Nanostructured Porous Gold for Methanol Electro-Oxidation

Abstract:Dealloying single phase alloys is known to generate a type of nanostructured porous metals with intriguing properties. In this study, nanoporous gold (NPG) made by dealloying Au-Ag is investigated as a novel electrode material for methanol electro-oxidation. Compared to bulk Au electrode, oxidation and subsequent reduction of NPG occur at significantly negative potentials in both acid and alkaline solutions. NPG shows great catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation, but the structure quickly coarsens upon long time potential cycling. Interestingly, after surface modification with only a tiny amount of platinum, NPG exhibits greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward methanol oxidation in the alkaline solutions, which is exemplified by a broad and high anodic peak during the positive scan and two secondary oxidation peaks in the subsequent reverse scan. At the same time, SEM observation and long-time potential cycling both prove that Pt-NPG has much enhanced structure stability as compared with bare NPG.

Abstract:Tuning the composition and surface structure of the metal nanocrystals offered viable avenues for enhancing catalytic performances. Herein, we report a facile one-pot strategy for the formation of PdAg porous alloy nanostructures (PANs) with a concave surface. Due to their highly open nanostructures and tunable d-band center features, PdAg PANs exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability than Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and Pd/C for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media. Our results provide a feasible and efficient approach for the controlled synthesis of high-performance Pd-based nanomaterials for alkaline MOR.

Abstract:The main challenges to the direct methanol fuel cells are the activity and durability of electrocatalysts. To alleviate such issues, a recently proposed strategy introduces an exotic element to form Pt-based alloy nanostructures. This study reports a green route to prepare porous flowerlike Pt72Ru28 nanoalloys assembled with sub-4.0 nm particles. The peak current density and mass activity on these as-synthesized porous flowerlike Pt72Ru28 nanoalloys can be increased to 10.98 mA cm(-2) and 1.70 A mg(-1) Pt for methanol oxidation in acidic medium. They are respectively 4.19/3.54, 4.27/5.0, and 5.74/1.73 times those on the commercial Pt black, Pt50Ru50 black, and Ru50Pt50/C. These porous flowerlike Pt72Ru28 nanoalloys have a much higher long-term durability than commercial Pt black, Pt50Ru50 black, and Ru50Pt50/C. More significantly, the porous Pt72Ru28 bimetallic nanoalloys have long-term solvent durability after immersion in water for 16 months. The peak current density and mass activity on porous Pt72Ru28 nanoalloys are still 7.76 mA cm(-2) and 1.2 A mg(-1) Pt. These experimental results show an effective approach to the development of PtRu nanoalloys as electrocatalysts with substantially enhanced activity and durability for direct methanol fuel cells.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of "Pt-on-PdAg" heterogeneous nanocrystals in the form of trigonal/hexagonal plate (THNPs) and explored their applications in electroxidation of methanol (MOR) in alkaline medium. In particular, PdAg polyhedral nanoparticles are prepared in advance, followed by the addition of Pt salts to allow in situ galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) between them, leading to the formation of Pt nano-islands on PdAg particle surface and the transformation of the overall morphology into trigon/hexagon. The deliberately designed Pt-"PdAg alloy" interface arising from the hybrid structure greatly enriches the absorption sites, showing noticeable structural advantages in MOR electrocatalysis. Particularly, the carbon-supported Pt-on-PdAg THNPs exhibit nearly 30-fold increase in specific activity as compared to that of commercial Pt/C, as well as enhanced reaction kinetics and long-term durability. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction of CH 3 OH oxidation mediated by PtAgPd is energetically more favorable compared to the similar reaction promoted by Pt, which rationalizes the experimental observation that PtAgPd shows the improved catalytic performance. The present study offers a feasible route to construct trimetallic nanocrystals with successful interface engineering, and validates their promising use as fuel cell electrocatalyst from both experimental validation and fundamental insights. It may help enlighten the rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with regulated multiple active sites.

Abstract:Pt-based alloy nanowires become an ideal platform for commercial application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Regrettably, most of the nanowires are prepared in oil phase system. These plentiful hydrophobic molecules are adsorbed on the surface of the nanowires and build a barrier that prevents mass transfer of the substrate molecules, resulting in the decrease of catalytic efficiency. Therefore, it is very urgent to prepare Pt-based nanowires in aqueous system to improve the performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, we use a H2 assisted strategy to prepare 3.5 nm-thin Pt3Pb nanowires in aqueous solution. Taking methanol oxidation reaction as the catalytic model, the Pt3Pb nanowires show mass activity of 3.56 A mg-1 and specific activity of 7.46 mA cm-2 in MOR, which are 4.88 and 4.60 times higher than those of Pt/C. The improved performance of Pt3Pb nanowires is attributed to the ultrathin structure, synergistic effect of alloy and abundant accessible defects.
