Abstract:The mass transport behavior through nanoscale channels, greatly influenced by the structures and dynamics of nanoconfined water, plays an essential role in many biophysical processes. However, the dynamics of nanoconfined water under an external field and its effects are still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we theoretically show that the ionic current of [Bmim][PF6] through narrow pores in graphene membrane exhibits an ionic negative differential resistance effect-the ionic current decreases as the voltage increases over a certain threshold. This effect arises from the violation of traditional fluid dynamics as the assumption of continuity and homogeneity of fluids is no longer effective in ultrathin nanopores. The gradient of electric field around the atomic-thin layer produces a strong gradient force on the polarized water inside the nanopore. This dielectrophoretically compressed water leads to a hydrostatic force that repels ions from entering the nanopore. Our findings may advance the understanding of hydrostatic mechanism, which governs ion transport through nanopores.

Abstract:Fundamental properties of the Au(111)-KPF6 interface, particularly the potential of zero charge (PZC), exhibit pronounced variations among solvents, yet the origin remains largely elusive. In this study, we aim to link the solvent dependency to the microscopic phenomenon of electron spillover occurring at the metal-solution interface in heterogeneous dielectric media. Addressing the challenge of describing the solvent-modulated electron spillover under constant potential conditions, we adopt a semiclassical functional approach and parametrize it with first-principles calculations and experimental data. We unveil that the key variable governing this phenomenon is the local permittivity within the region approximately 2.5 angstrom above the metal edge. A higher local permittivity facilitates the electron spillover that tends to increase the PZC on the one hand and enhances the screening of the electronic charge that tends to decrease the PZC on the other. These dual effect lead to a nonmonotonic relationship between the PZC and the local permittivity. Moreover, our findings reveal that the electron spillover induces a capacitance peak at electrode potentials that are more negative than the PZC in concentrated solutions. This observation contrasts classical models predicting the peak to occur precisely at the PZC. To elucidate the contribution of electron spillover to the total capacitance, we decompose the total capacitance into a quantum capacitance of the metal C-q, a classical capacitance of electrolyte solution C-c, and a capacitance C-qc accounting for electron-ion correlations. Our calculations reveal that C-qc is negative due to the promoted electron spillover at more negative potentials. Our work not only reveals the importance of local permittivity in tuning the electron spillover but also presents a viable theoretical approach to study solvent effects on electrochemical interfaces under operating conditions.
Electrochemical Capacitance of CO-terminated Pt(111) is Dominated by CO-Solvent Gap

Abstract:The distribution of electric fields within the electrochemical double layer depends on both the electrode and electrolyte in complex ways. These fields strongly influence chemical dynamics in the electrode-electrolyte interface, but cannot be measured directly with sub-molecular resolution. We report experimental capacitance measurements for aqueous interfaces of CO-terminated Pt(111). By comparing these measurements with first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we infer microscopic field distributions and decompose contributions to the inverse capacitance from various spatial regions of the interface. We find that the CO is strongly electronically coupled to the Pt, and that most of the interfacial potential difference appears across the gap between the terminating O and water, and not across the CO molecule as previously hypothesized. This `gap capacitance' resulting from hydrophobic termination lowers the overall capacitance of the aqueous Pt-CO interface, and makes it less sensitive to electrolyte concentration compared to the bare metal.

Abstract:Surfaces of metal oxides at working conditions are usually electrified due to the acid-base chemistry. The charged interface compensated with counterions forms the so-called electric double layer. The coupling of surface chemistry and electric double layer is considered to be crucial but poorly understood because of lacking the information at the atomistic scale. Here, we used the latest development in density functional theory based finite-field molecular dynamics simulation to investigate pH-dependence of the Helmholtz capacitance at electrified rutile TiO$_2$ (110)-NaCl electrolyte interfaces. It is found that, due to competing forces from surface adsorption and from electric double layer, water molecules have a stronger structural fluctuation at high pH and this leads to a much larger capacitance. It is also seen that, interfacial proton transfers at low pH increase significantly the capacitance value. These findings elucidate the microscopic origin for the same trend observed in titration experiments.

Abstract:The electrified solid-liquid interface plays an essential role in many renewable energy-related applications, including hydrogen production and utilization. Limitations in computational modelling of the electrified solid-liquid interface have held back the understanding of its properties at the atomic-scale level. In this study, we applied the grand canonical density functional theory (GC-DFT) combined with a hybrid implicit/explicit solvation model to reinvestigate the widely studied electrified platinum-water interface affordably. The calculated double layer capacitances of the Pt(111)-water interface over the applied bias potential closely match the experimental and previous theoretical data from expensive ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. The structural analysis of the interface models reveals that the applied bias potential can significantly affect the Pt(111)-water atomic interface configurations. The orientation of the water molecules next to the Pt(111) surface is vital for correctly describing the potential of zero charge (PZC) and capacitance. Additionally, the GC-DFT results confirm that the absorption of the hydrogen atom under applied bias potential can significantly affect the electrified interfacial properties. The presented affordable GC-DFT approach, therefore, offers an efficient and accurate means to enhance the understanding of electrified solid-liquid interfaces.

Abstract:The surface charge density is a crucial property of the electric double layer. It determines the strength of the electric field, the water orientation, and ion hydration structure at interface and thus has strong impact on the performance of electrocatalytic reactions. While surface charge density cannot be directly controlled in electrochemical experiments, it can be estimated from the potential of zero charge and the differential double layer capacitance curve. In this mini-review, taking the metal/aqueous solution interface as the study case, we summarize the recent advances in determining their potential of zero charge and Helmholtz capacitance with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. By comparing computational and theoretical results, we also discuss factors that influence the potential of zero charge and Helmholtz capacitance, including metal surface work function, metal-solvent chemical interactions, electrode polarization, and ion hydration structure at the interface. These insights provide a more detailed microscopic understanding of the electric double layer.

Strain engineering of ferroelectric negative capacitance in PbZr(1-x)TixO3 thin films

Abstract:Negative capacitance (NC) in ferroelectric materials has been proposed to overcome the fundamental limitation on the energy efficiency of electronics. Understanding the impact of mechanical strain on the NC of ferroelectrics is of scientific significance and technological importance because the strain-polarization coupling could substantially influence the multifunctional properties of epitaxial ferroelectric thin films. Based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and Kirchhoff's law, we reveal that a tensile strain decreases the magnitude and duration time of the transient NC of PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) thin films while a compressive strain increases it in a resistor-ferroelectric capacitor circuit. In particular, the tensile strain makes the transient NC completely disappear near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), whereas the compressive strain can maintain it up to a temperature higher than Curie temperature. The detailed energy analysis reveals that the change of transient NC with strain and composition is attributed to the change of the negative curvature of energy landscape, which is the origin of NC in ferroelectric materials. The work gives considerable new insight into the mechanical control of ferroelectric transient NC, and offers guidance in searching for large transient NC in the widely used PZT thin films through strain and composition engineering. On the negative capacitance in ferroelectric heterostructures

Abstract:Negative capacitance can be used to overcome the lower limit of subthreshold swing (SS) in field effect transistors (FETs), enabling ultralow-power microelectronics, though the concept of ferroelectric negative capacitance remains contentious. In this work, we analyze the negative capacitance in ferroelectric/dielectric heterostructure rigorously using Landau-Denvonshire theory, identifying three (one) critical dielectric thicknesses for first (second) order ferroelectric phase transition upon which the stability of negative capacitance changes. A critical electric window is also identified, beyond which the ferroelectric negative capacitance cannot be maintained. Between the first and second critical thicknesses, meta-stable negative capacitance exists near zero polarization, yet it will be lost and cannot be recovered when the electric window is broken. Between the second and third critical thicknesses, stable negative capacitance always exists near zero polarization within the electric window regardless of initial polar state, resulting in hysteretic double P-E loop. Beyond the third (first) critical thickness of first (second) order phase transition, P-E loop becomes hysteresis free, though the spontaneous polarization can still be induced at sufficient large electric field. Singularities in the effective dielectric constant is also observed at the critical thickness or electric field. The analysis demonstrates that the negative capacitance of ferroelectric can be stabilized by linear dielectric within a critical electric window, and the negative capacitance can be either hysteresis free or hysteretic for first order ferroelectrics, while it is always hysteresis free for the second order ferroelectrics.

Abstract:Controlling electrochemical reactivity requires a detailed understanding of the charging behavior and thermodynamics of the electrochemical interface. Experiments can independently probe the overall charge response of the electrochemical double layer by capacitance measurements, and the thermodynamics of the inner layer with potential of maximum entropy (PME) measurements. Relating these properties by computational modeling of the electrochemical interface has so far been challenging due to the low accuracy of classical molecular dynamics (MD) for capacitance and the limited time and length scales of \emph{ab initio} MD (AIMD). Here, we combine large ensembles of long-time-scale classical MD simulations with charge response from electronic density functional theory (DFT) to predict the potential-dependent capacitance of a family of ideal aqueous electrochemical interfaces with different peak capacitances. We show that, while the potential of maximum capacitance varies, this entire family exhibits an electrode charge of maximum capacitance (CMC) between -3.7 $\mu$C/cm$^2$ and -3.3 $\mu$C/cm$^2$, regardless of details in the electronic response. Simulated heating of the same interfaces reveals that the entropy peaks at a charge of maximum entropy (CME) of $-6.4 \pm 0.7~\mu$C/cm$^2$, in agreement with experimental findings for metallic electrodes. The CME and CMC both indicate asymmetric response of interfacial water that is stronger for negatively charged electrodes, while the difference between CME and CMC illustrates the richness in behavior of even the ideal electrochemical interface.

Abstract:Negative capacitance effect in ferroelectric materials provides a solution to the energy dissipation problem induced by Boltzmann distribution of electrons in conventional electronics. Here, we discover that besides ferroelectrics, the antiferroelectrics based on Landau switches also have intrinsic negative capacitance effect. We report both the static and transient negative capacitance effect in antiferroelectric PbZrO3 films and reveal its possible physical origin. The capacitance of the capacitor of the PbZrO3 and paraelectric heterostructure is demonstrated to be larger than that of the isolated paraelectric capacitor at room temperature, indicating the existence of the static negative capacitance. The opposite variation trends of the voltage and charge transients in a circuit of the PbZrO3 capacitor in series with an external resistor demonstrate the existence of transient negative capacitance effect. Strikingly, four negative capacitance effects are observed in the antiferroelectric system during one cycle scan of voltage pulses, different from the ferroelectric counterpart with two negative capacitance effects. The polarization vector mapping, electric field and free energy analysis reveal the rich local regions of negative capacitance effect with the negative dP/dE and (δ2G)⁄(δD2), producing stronger negative capacitance effect. The observation of negative capacitance effect in antiferroelectric films significantly extends the range of its potential application and reduces the power dissipation further.

Abstract:The mechanism of negative capacitance, e.g. inductance, induced by a sufficient electrical field in the organic device is investigated. The cations in organic bulk are proposed to be driven by the applied voltage and to accumulate at the interface, and further to generate the surface states or media states. These states result in a larger junction current through the device, indicating the negative capacitances which are simulated in three situations: impedance spectrum, capacitance measurement and current response. This simple kinetic model may be helpful to understand why the negative capacitance phenomenon is observed in various organic devices.

Interfacial Water Polarization: A Critical Force for Graphene-based Electrochemical Interfaces

Abstract:Water molecules predominantly act as solvents in electrochemical systems and are often modeled as a passive dielectric medium. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analysis to revisit this conventional view. We reveal that the interfacial polarized water overscreens the electrostatic potential between ions and the surface beyond being a passive dielectric medium. This overscreening enables the interfacial water to dominate the electric potential spatial distribution, inverting the electrode surface potential polarity and dominating the capacitance. A model is then developed to incorporate this critical interfacial water polarization.

Abstract:Abstract The origin of the apparent negative charge at hydrophobic–water interfaces has fueled debates in the physical chemistry community for decades. The most common interpretation given to explain this observation is that negatively charged hydroxide ions (OH – ) bind strongly to the interfaces. Using first principles calculations of extended air–water and oil–water interfaces, we unravel a mechanism that does not require the presence of OH – . Small amounts of charge transfer along hydrogen bonds and asymmetries in the hydrogen bond network due to topological defects can lead to the accumulation of negative surface charge at both interfaces. For water near oil, some spillage of electron density into the oil phase is also observed. The computed surface charge densities at both interfaces is approximately $$-0.015\ {\rm{e}}/{{\rm{nm}}}^{2}$$ − 0.015 e ∕ nm 2 in agreement with electrophoretic experiments. We also show, using an energy decomposition analysis, that the electronic origin of this phenomena is rooted in a collective polarization/charge transfer effect.

Electronic response and charge inversion at polarized gold electrode

Abstract:We have studied polarized Au(100) and Au(111) electrodes immersed in electrolyte solution by implementing finite-field methods in density functional theory-based molecular dynamics (DFTMD) simulations. This allows us to directly compute the Helmholtz capacitance of electric double layer by including both electronic and ionic degrees of freedom, and the results turn out to be in excellent agreement with experiments. It is found that the electronic response of Au electrode makes a crucial contribution to the high Helmholtz capacitance and the instantaneous adsorption of Cl can lead to a charge inversion on the anodic polarized Au(100) surface. These findings point out ways to improve popular semi-classical models for simulating electrified solid-liquid interfaces and to identify the nature of surface charges therein which are difficult to access in experiments.

Abstract:When an electrode contacts an electrolyte, an interfacial electric field forms. This interfacial field can polarize the electrode's surface and nearby molecules, but its effect can be countered by an applied potential. Quantifying the value of this countering potential ('potential of zero charge' (pzc)) is, however, not straightforward. Here we present an optical method for determining the pzc at an electrochemical interface. Our approach uses phase-sensitive second-harmonic generation to determine the electrochemical potential where the interfacial electric field vanishes at an electrode–electrolyte interface with Pt–water as a model experiment. Our method reveals that the pzc of the Pt–water interface is 0.23 ± 0.08 V versus standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) and is pH independent from pH 1 to pH 13. First-principles calculations with a hybrid explicit–implicit solvent model predict the pzc of the Pt(111)–water interface to be 0.23 V versus SHE and reveal how the interfacial water structure rearranges as the electrode potential is moved above and below the pzc. We further show that pzc is sensitive to surface modification; deposition of Ni on Pt shifts the interfacial pzc in the cathodic direction by ~360 mV. Our work demonstrates a materials-agnostic approach for quantifying the interfacial electrical field and water orientation at an electrochemical interface without requiring probe molecules and confirms the long-held view that the interfacial electric field is more intense during hydrogen electrocatalysis in alkaline than in acid.

Why Do Ferroelectrics Exhibit Negative Capacitance?

Abstract:The Landau theory of phase transitions predicts the presence of a negative capacitance in ferroelectric materials based on a mean-field approach. While recent experimental results confirm this prediction, the microscopic origin of negative capacitance in ferroelectrics is often debated. This study provides a simple, physical explanation of the negative capacitance phenomenon—i.e., ‘S’-shaped polarization vs. electric field curve—without having to invoke the Landau phenomenology. The discussion is inspired by pedagogical models of ferroelectricity as often presented in classic text-books such as the Feynman lectures on Physics and the Introduction of Solid State Physics by Charles Kittel, which are routinely used to describe the quintessential ferroelectric phenomena such as the Curie-Weiss law and the emergence of spontaneous polarization below the Curie temperature. The model presented herein is overly simplified and ignores many of the complex interactions in real ferroelectrics; however, this model reveals an important insight: The polarization catastrophe phenomenon that is required to describe the onset of ferroelectricity naturally leads to the thermodynamic instability that is negative capacitance. Considering the interaction of electric dipoles and saturation of the dipole moments at large local electric fields we derive the full ‘S’-curve relating the ferroelectric polarization and the electric field, in qualitative agreement with Landau theory.

Microscopic EDL structures and charge–potential relation on stepped platinum surface: Insights from the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:The microstructural features and charge–potential relation of an electric double layer (EDL) at a stepped Pt(553)/water interface are investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicate that the chemisorbed O-down water molecules gather at the (110) step sites, while the (111) terrace sites are covered by the H-down water molecules, which greatly weakens the push-back effect of interface water on the spillover electrons of the stepped surface and, therefore, results in a much more positive potential of zero charge (PZC) than the extended low-index Pt surfaces. It is further revealed that around the PZC, the change in the surface charge density is dominated by the change in the coverage of chemisorbed water molecules, while EDL charging is the main cause of the change in the surface charge density at potential away from the PZC, thus leading to an S-shaped charge–potential relation and a maximum interface capacitance around PZC. Our results make up for the current lack of the atomic-scale understanding of the EDL microstructures and charge–potential relation on the real electrode surfaces with plentiful step and defect sites.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Cation effects have been shown in numerous experiments to play a significant role in electrocatalysis. To understand these effects at the molecular level, we systematically investigate the structures and capacitances of electric double layers with a variety of cations as counter charges at Pt(111)-COad/water interfaces with ab initio molecular dynamics. It is encouraging to find that the computed Helmholtz capacitances for different cations are in quantitative agreement with experiments, and that the trend of cation effects on capacitances shows clear correlation with the structures of interface cations of differing sizes and hydration energies. More importantly, we demonstrate the Helmholtz capacitance as the key descriptor for measuring the activity of CO-CO dimerization, the rate-determining step for C2+ formation in electroreduction of CO and CO2. Our work provides atomistic insights into cation effects on electric double layers and electrocatalysis that are crucial for optimizing electrode and electrolyte materials.

Abstract:When an electrode contacts an electrolyte, an interfacial electric field forms. We present an optical method for quantifying the value of this countering potential ("potential of zero charge", pzc). Our approach uses phase-sensitive second harmonic generation to determine the potential where the interfacial electric field vanishes, using Pt-water interface as a model system. Our experiment reveals that the value of the pzc of the Pt/water interface and further shows that it is pH-independent from pH 1 to 13 on an absolute potential scale. We will discuss this result from the consideration of the solid-liquid interface, including the electrode materials and interfacial water structure. Our work provides a materials-agnostic tool for quantifying the interfacial electrical field at a solid-liquid interface and confirms the view that the interfacial electric field during hydrogen electrocatalysis is more intense in alkaline than acid.
