Abstract:In a 2005 paper, Casacuberta, Scevenels and Smith construct a homotopy idempotent functor $E$ on the category of simplicial sets with the property that whether it can be expressed as localization with respect to a map $f$ is independent of the ZFC axioms. We show that this construction can be carried out in homotopy type theory. More precisely, we give a general method of associating to a suitable (possibly large) family of maps, a reflective subuniverse of any universe $\mathcal{U}$. When specialized to an appropriate family, this produces a localization which when interpreted in the $\infty$-topos of spaces agrees with the localization corresponding to $E$. Our approach generalizes the approach of [CSS] in two ways. First, by working in homotopy type theory, our construction can be interpreted in any $\infty$-topos. Second, while the local objects produced by [CSS] are always 1-types, our construction can produce $n$-types, for any $n$. This is new, even in the $\infty$-topos of spaces. In addition, by making use of universes, our proof is very direct. Along the way, we prove many results about "small" types that are of independent interest. As an application, we give a new proof that separated localizations exist. We also give results that say when a localization with respect to a family of maps can be presented as localization with respect to a single map, and show that the simplicial model satisfies a strong form of the axiom of choice which implies that sets cover and that the law of excluded middle holds.

Abstract:In this article we develop the cotangent complex and (co)homology theories for spectral categories. Along the way, we reproduce standard model structures on spectral categories. As applications, we show that the invariants to descend to stable $\infty$-categories and we prove a stabilization result for spectral categories.
On local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories

Abstract:In this work we provide a model-independent notion of local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories which generalises the well-known theory of locally coCartesian fibrations of $(\infty,1)$-categories. Based on previous work, we construct a model category which serves as a specific combinatorial model for this type of fibrations. Our main result is a generalisation of the locally coCartesian straightening and unstraightening construction of Lurie, which yields for any scaled simplicial set $S$ an equivalence of $(\infty,2)$-categories between the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(0,1)$-fibrations over $S$ (also known as inner coCartesian fibrations) and the $(\infty,2)$-category of functors $S \to \mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$ with values in $(\infty,2)$-categories. Given an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{B}$, our Grothendieck construction can be specialised to produce an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of local fibrations over $\mathbb{B}$ and the $(\infty,2)$-category of oplax unital functors with values in $\mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$. Finally, as an application of our results we provide a version of the Yoneda lemma for $(\infty,2)$-categories.

The smashing spectrum of sheaves

Abstract:For an arbitrary $\infty$-topos, we classify the smashing localizations in the $\infty$-category of sheaves valued in derived vector spaces: Any of them is the restriction functor to a (unique) closed subtopos. Our proof is based on the existence of a Boolean cover. This result in particular gives us the first example of a nonzero presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category whose smashing spectrum has no points. Combining this with the sheaves-spectrum adjunction, we obtain a Tannaka-type categorical reconstruction result for locales.

Abstract:In homotopy theory, exact sequences and spectral sequences consist of groups and pointed sets, linked by actions. We prove that the theory of such exact and spectral sequences can be established in a categorical setting which is based on the existence of kernels and cokernels with respect to an assigned ideal of null morphisms, a generalisation of abelian categories and Puppe-exact categories.

Abstract:Approximable triangulated categories, as introduced and developed by Neeman, provide a solid framework for studying localization sequences within triangulated categories. In our paper, we demonstrate that a recollement of approximable triangulated categories, given certain mild conditions, induces short exact sequences of both triangulated subcategories and Verdier quotient categories. Specifically, in the case of a recollement of locally Hom-finite noetherian approximable triangulated categories, we find that this induces a short exact sequence of the bounded closures of compact objects within these categories. Furthermore, if the recollement extends one step downwards, it yields a short exact sequence of the singularity categories of these triangulated categories, offering a generalization of the localization sequence established by Jin-Yang-Zhou for the singularity categories of finite-dimensional algebras. We also present applications of these results within the derived categories of finite-dimensional algebras, DG algebras, and schemes.

Sheaves of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories

Abstract:We provide a functorial presentation of the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $(n, r)$-categories for all $-2 \leq n\leq\infty$ and $0 \leq r\leq n+2$ based on complete Segal space objects. In this definition, the equivalences of sheaves of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories are defined inductively, so we also provide a localisation at the coinductive equivalences to define the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $\omega$-categories as well. We prove that the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $(\infty, \infty)$-categories and the $(\infty, 1)$-category of sheaves of $\omega$-categories both define distributors over the underlying topos of sheaves of spaces. Moreover, we show that these distributors define terminal and initial fixed points with respect to the construction of complete Segal space objects in a distributor. We conclude with a sheafification result: the category of sheaves of $(n, r)$-categories over a site $\mathscr{C}$ can be presented as a strongly reflective localisation of $\mathbf{Fun}(\mathscr{C}^{\mathrm{op}}, \mathbf{Cat}_{(n, r)})$, where the localisation functor preserves fibre products over $\mathbf{Sh}(\mathscr{C})$, with the analogous result also holding for sheaves of $\omega$-categories.

Abstract:We categorify the inclusion–exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero this conjecture was previously established by Aumonier via topological methods.

Abstract:We show that, over an arbitrary commutative ring, the localizations of the categories of dg categories, of cohomologically unital, of unital and of strictly unital $A_\infty$ categories with respect to the corresponding classes of quasi-equivalences are all equivalent. The result is proven at the $\infty$-categorical level by considering the natural $\infty$-categorical models of the categories above. As an application of the techniques we develop to compare the localizations mentioned above, we provide a new proof of the existence of internal Homs for the homotopy category of dg categories in terms of the category of (strictly) unital $A_\infty$ functors. This yields a complete proof of a claim by Kontsevich and Keller.

Localization of triangulated categories with respect to extension-closed subcategories

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for localization theory of triangulated categories $\mathcal{C}$, that is, from a given extension-closed subcategory $\mathcal{N}$ of $\mathcal{C}$, we construct a natural extriangulated structure on $\mathcal{C}$ together with an exact functor $Q:\mathcal{C}\to\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ satisfying a suitable universality, which unifies several phenomena. Precisely, a given subcategory $\mathcal{N}$ is thick if and only if the localization $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ corresponds to a triangulated category. In this case, $Q$ is nothing other than the usual Verdier quotient. Furthermore, it is revealed that $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ is an exact category if and only if $\mathcal{N}$ satisfies a generating condition $\mathsf{cone}(\mathcal{N},\mathcal{N})=\mathcal{C}$. Such an (abelian) exact localization $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ provides a good understanding of some cohomological functors $\mathcal{C}\to\mathsf{Ab}$, e.g., the heart of $t$-structures on $\mathcal{C}$ and the abelian quotient of $\mathcal{C}$ by a cluster-tilting subcategory $\mathcal{N}$.

Abstract:We construct and study a motivic lift of a spectral sequence associated to a stratified scheme, recently discovered by Petersen in the context of mixed Hodge theory and $\ell$-adic Galois representations. The original spectral sequence expresses the compactly supported cohomology of an open stratum in terms of the compactly supported cohomology of the closures of strata and the combinatorics of the poset underlying the stratification. Some of its special cases are classical tools in the study of arrangements of subvarieties and configuration spaces. Our motivic lift lives in the triangulated category of étale motives and takes the shape of a Postnikov system. We describe its connecting morphisms and study some of its functoriality properties.

Abstract:We discuss the theory of equivariant localization focussing on applications relevant for holography. We consider geometries comprising compact and non-compact toric orbifolds, as well as more general non-compact toric Calabi-Yau singularities. A key object in our constructions is the equivariant volume, for which we describe two methods of evaluation: the Berline-Vergne fixed-point formula and the Molien-Weyl formula, supplemented by the Jeffrey-Kirwan prescription. We present two applications in supersymmetric field theories. Firstly, we describe a method for integrating the anomaly polynomial of SCFTs on compact toric orbifolds. Secondly, we discuss equivariant orbifold indices that are expected to play a key role in the computation of supersymmetric partition functions. In the context of supergravity, we propose that the equivariant volume can be used to characterise universally the geometry of a large class of supersymmetric solutions. As an illustration, we employ equivariant localization to prove the factorization in gravitational blocks of various supergravity free energies, recovering previous results as well as obtaining generalizations.

Abstract:We show that the $\infty$-category of global spaces is equivalent to the homotopy localization of the $\infty$-category of sheaves on the site of separated differentiable stacks, following a philosophy proposed by Gepner-Henriques. We further prove that this $\infty$-category of sheaves is a cohesive $\infty$-topos and that it fully faithfully contains the singular-cohesive $\infty$-topos of Sati-Schreiber.

Abstract:Lessard's $\mathbb{Z}$-categories are an analogue of $\omega$-categories possessing cells in all positive and negative dimensions. Categorical spectra, developed by Stefanich, are an analogue of spectra obtained by replacing the suspension of pointed $\infty$-groupoids by that of pointed $(\infty,\omega)$-categories. We give an $\infty$-categorical definition of weak $\mathbb{Z}$-categories (alias $(\infty,\mathbb{Z})$-categories), and show categorical spectra to be equivalent to pointed $(\infty,\mathbb{Z})$-categories. In particular, we show that the stable cells of categorical spectra coincide with the natural cells of $(\infty,\mathbb{Z})$-categories, and recover Lessard's description of spectra as pointed weak $\mathbb{Z}$-groupoids.
