Abstract:Design and fabrication of cost-effective (pre-)catalysts are important for water splitting and metal-air batteries. In this direction, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated as pre-catalysts for oxygen evolution. However, the activation process and the complex reconstruction behaviour of these MOFs are not well understood. Herein, square-like MOF nanosheets in which carbon nanotubes were embedded were prepared by introducing an amine ligand to coordinate with Ni ions and then reacting with [Fe(CN)6]3-. The formed MOF nanosheets containing nickel and iron species were then activated by NaBH4, inducing the leaching of ligands and the formation of tiny active species in situ loaded on carbon nanotubes. The prepared catalyst shows superior oxygen evolution performance with an ultralow overpotential of 231 mV for 10 mA cm-2, a fast reaction kinetics with a small Tafel slope of 52.3 mV dec-1, and outstanding catalysis stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution can be attributed to the structural advantage of in situ derived small sized active species and one-dimensional conductive networks. This work provides a new thought for the enhancement of the electrocatalytic performance of MOF materials.

Abstract:The remarkable potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has garnered significant attention, primarily attributed to their unique and adjustable structural characteristics, which hold promise for various applications, including electrocatalysis. Nevertheless, utilizing MOFs directly in oxygen electrocatalysis presents a formidable challenge due to the intricate control needed to modulate their size, composition, and morphology while ensuring an abundance of active sites. Here, we present a straightforward synthesis method that generates novel NiCoFe-based trimetallic MOF nanostructures. These structures demonstrate exceptional catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions when employed as catalysts. Specifically, the FeNi 2 Co 1 -MOF exhibits the crucial overpotential of 143 mV required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it showcases a low Tafel slope of 68 mV dec −1 and maintains outstanding durability throughout extensive long-term testing.

Abstract:Exploiting advanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for the development of metal-air batteries, fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts with high specific areas, abundant expose active sites, and porous structures is an effective approach to improve the electrocatalytic performances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline materials, which possess large surface areas, high porosities, componential and structural diversity, has shown great potential as efficient OER electrocatalysts. This review focus on the recent progress of fabrication and utilization of transition metal (e.g., Fe, Co, and Ni) based MOF materials including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and their derivatives for OER. A variety of typical strategies, including synthetic designs, compositional, and structural modifications for activity improvement of the MOF-based materials in the OER are outlined and discussed. Based on the previous achievements, the current state of the art and the perspectives for the future development of the field are summarized.

Abstract:The construction of efficient, durable, and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great value but challenging. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a series of trimetallic (W/Co/Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon nanoflakes (CNF) with various Fe content, and an Fe-dependent volcano-type plot can be drawn out for WCoFex-CNF. The optimized WCoFe0.3-CNF (when the feed ratio of Fe/Co is 0.3) demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of only 254 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and excellent durability of 100 h. Further researches show that appropriate amount of iron doping can regulate the electronic structure, resulting in a favorable synergistic environment. This method may stimulate the exploration of electrocatalysts by utilizing MOFs as precursors while realizing electronic modulation by multimetal doping.

Abstract:Abstract Electron modulation presents a captivating approach to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains a challenging undertaking. In this study, we propose an effective strategy to regulate the electronic structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by the construction of MOF‐on‐MOF heterogeneous architectures. As a representative heterogeneous architectures, MOF‐74 on MOF‐274 hybrids are in‐situ prepared on three‐dimensional (3D) metal substrates (NiFe alloy foam (NFF)) via a two‐step self‐assembly method, resulting in MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. Through a combination of spectroscopic and theory calculation, our study unveils the successful modulation of the electronic property of MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. This modulation arises from the phase conjugation of the two MOFs and the synergistic effect of the multi‐metallic centers (Ni and Fe). Consequently, MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF exhibits excellent OER activity, displaying ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the 1.0 and 0.1 M KOH solutions, respectively. Abstract:Rational design of facile and low-cost efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to solve the energy crisis. Benefiting from in situ self-reconstruction from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline electrolytes, MOFs have become alternative OER catalysts. Thus, Fe-doped Co-MOF nanosheets (Co-MOF/Fe) were prepared and utilized straightforwardly as OER electrocatalysts. CoFe-layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFe-LDHs) with abundant active sites are obtained from in situ conversion of Co-MOF/Fe after etching by the KOH electrolyte, which are generally actual active species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe ions will also produce a synergistic effect that greatly improves the electrocatalytic OER performance. The optimized catalyst (Co-MOF/Fe10) shows exceptional OER activity (η10 = 260 mV) and excellent durability over 50 h. The outstanding OER performance of Co-MOF/Fe10 can also be reflected in the two-electrode hydrolyzer (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). This study offers a pathway to probe the catalytic mechanism of MOFs and the rational construction of efficient MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an state-of-the-art electrocatalyst, have been shown an efficient alternative to precious metals. Herein, we have synthesized a series of mixed Fe-Co-MOFs (MFC-MOFs) with low crystallinity by a simple one-step solvothermal method, which can be applied as direct electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction. The broadening and weakened XRD diffraction peaks and the diffused ring in SAED reveal the low-crystalline characteristic of MFC-MOFs. The shifted Co 2p3/2 and Fe 2p3/2 peaks in XPS confirm the redistribution of local electrons in MFC-MOFs. The formation of more favorable Co in higher valence state is confirmed in XPS, which is more beneficial to be transformed into active OOH-like intermediates for OER. The optimal MFC-MOFs exhibits a lower overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, which decreases in 212 and 140 mV compared to that of Fe-MOFs and Co-MOFs, respectively. Meanwhile, a remarkably low Tafel slope (37 mV dec−1) and a favorable long-term stability (over 20 h) are obtained on the MFC-MOFs, which are all much superior to those of the as-synthesized RuO2. The enhanced catalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the inter-molecular synergy between Co-MOFs and Fe-MOFs, which affords MFC-MOFs low-crystalline structure and enlarged surface area. The optimized structure in return promotes the exposure of more active sites and remarkably improves the charge transfer capability. Overall, the design strategy based on the inter-molecular synergistic interactions and low-crystalline structure are worthy to be extended to increase the stability, catalytic active sites and electron transfer ability of mixed-node MOF electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction(OER) plays an important role in many electrochemical systems. However, its sluggish kinetics severely limits the development of next-generation energy technologies. Recently, two-dimensional(2D) metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) have attracted much attention as a class of promising electrocatalysts. Their diverse components and tunable structures provide a new platform to design and explore ideal electrocatalysts. The ultrathin characteristics including high specific surface area, abundant exposed metal sites and fast electronic transfer further promote the electrocatalytic performance of 2D MOFs. Therefore, many attempts have been made in synthesizing 2D MOF-based electrocatalysts in recent years. This review focuses on the strategies to fabricate 2D MOFs with high electrocatalytic performances for OER. The discussion on challenge and development of their electrocatalytic application is also presented.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are increasingly becoming an important choice for developing robust and efficient electrocatalysts; therefore, exploring the relationship between the structure, catalytic activity, and stability of MOFs is of great significance. MOFs 1-3 with different spatial configurations are designed and synthesized based on linear pyridine ligands, tetragonal carboxylic acid ligands, and triangular carboxylic acid ligands, while MOF 4 displays a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecule assembled through a mixed-ligand strategy. Compared with MOFs 1-3, MOF 4 has the lowest overpotential of 106 mV (at 10 mA·cm-2) and a Tafel slope of 80.9 mV·dec-1, as well as sturdy long-term stability in the process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The presence of dense metal clusters and μ3-O promotes the optimal catalytic performance of MOF 4. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of MOF 4 demonstrate that the process from O* to OOH* is the rate-determining step. This investigation further reveals the relationship between MOF structural composition and electrocatalytic OER performance and provides an effective strategy for the assembly of MOF-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Integrating various active sites into a multi-component system, one might significantly enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Herein, the as-prepared iron-molybdenum nitride/molybdenum oxide (Fe-Mo5N6/MoO3-550) composite electrocatalyst under optimum conditions demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance toward OER, which reach the current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of 201 and 216 mV, respectively. The OER performance of Fe-Mo5N6/MoO3-550 exceeds that of most previously reported electrocatalytic systems. The significant improvement of OER performance is ascribed to a combination of mechanisms. The strong electronic interactions among the Fe, Mo5N6 and MoO3 species can accelerate the OER reaction kinetics, which contribute to the OER performance. This work provides new insights into the construction of efficient electrocatalytic materials with inexpensive metals.

Abstract:A simple self‐templated design strategy is established to obtain two kinds of ternary metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), CoCu‐NiMOF nanosheets (MNs) and microflowers (MFs), which demonstrate the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance based on the Co–Cu concerted active sites, along with a strong synergistic effect of Ni node, thereby accelerating the OER catalytic rate. Multivariate metal–organic framework (MOF) is an ideal electrocatalytic material due to the synergistic effect of multiple metal active sites. In this study, a series of ternary M‐NiMOF (M = Co, Cu) through a simple self‐templated strategy that the Co/Cu MOF isomorphically grows in situ on the surface of NiMOF is designed. Owing to the electron rearrange of adjacent metals, the ternary CoCu‐NiMOFs demonstrate the improved intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. At optimized conditions, the ternary Co3Cu‐Ni2MOFs nanosheets give the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 288 mV with a Tafel slope of 87 mV dec−1, which is superior to that of bimetallic nanosheet and ternary microflowers. The low free energy change of potential‐determining step identifies that the OER process is favorable at Cu–Co concerted sites along with strong synergistic effect of Ni nodes. Partially oxidized metal sites also reduce the electron density, thus accelerating the OER catalytic rate. The self‐templated strategy provides a universal tool to design multivariate MOF electrocatalysts for highly efficient energy transduction.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has an important influence in the development of green and sustainable energy, and it is urgent to find the effective electrocatalysts to reduce their overpotential. MOFs materials have adjustable pore structure and polymetallic sites. Unsaturated metal sites are located on the material surface, which can be used as catalytic activity centers. However, intrinsic activity hinders the application in water splitting, and the necessary methods for the production of highly active catalytic materials are vulcanization and oxidation of the materials. Catalytic materials have been explored for monometallic, bimetallic, and trimetallic MOFs. Carbon-coated and doped MOF catalysts with core-shell structural features have been further investigated. MOF-based materials are widely used as OER electrocatalysts due to their inherent porous structure and excellent tunability. The experimental results and theories obtained have been compared through DFT calculation, and it is judged that the material obtained is a catalyst with excellent OER activity. Meanwhile combined with experimental and theoretical research, the thorough comprehension of the functional active site and underlying mechanisms for enhancing OER are emphatically emphasized. Through the overall comparison of these MOFs materials, it can be found that bimetallic materials have higher electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution than monometallic materials. MOFs materials derived from core-shell structure or obtained by carbon coating and doping not only have the stable and good OER activity, but also the shell formed by them can prevent further dissolution of metal cores. More importantly, it is found that only metal centers with good contact with the electrolyte are the electrochemically active. The intrinsic activity of MOF on OER can be effectively improved by synergistic interaction between polymetallic active sites. In this case, it can offer a promising concept for researching high-performance electrocatalysts based on MOF for OER. It is conducive to the synthesis of high-ratio oxygen-vacancy MOF catalysts. In addition, through the comprehensive reference of such articles, most of them describe the MOF materials synthesized by one or two metals alone, and this article is a summary of MOF materials with good properties. The emergence of these materials is an opportunity for high-performance oxygen evolution materials, which can provide the possibility to replace the expensive catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with special morphologies provide the geometric morphology and composition basis for the construction of platforms with excellent catalytic activity. In this work, cobalt–cerium composite oxide hollow dodecahedrons (Co/Cex-COHDs) with controllable morphology and tunable composition are successfully prepared via a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy using Co/Ce-MOFs as self-sacrificial templates. The construction of the hollow structure can expose a larger surface area to provide abundant active sites and pores to facilitate the diffusion of substances. The formation and optimization of phase interface between Co3O4 and CeO2 regulate the electronic structure of the catalytic site and form a fast channel favorable to electron transport, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activity. Based on the above advantages, the optimized Co/Ce0.2-COHDs obtained an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance.

Abstract:MOF-5 is an excellent self-sacrificed template with fascinating advantages (e.g. thermal robustness, ultrahigh surface area) to prepare highly porous carbon materials for diverse applications but Fe-N-C catalysts derived from MOF-5 seem yet unexplored. Through a dual strategy of cation-exchange and guest-encapsulation, an excellent MOF-5-derived Fe-N-C electrocatalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction was accomplished involving three steps. First, bimetallic Fe/Zn-MOF-5 was obtained by solid-liquid cation exchange between MOF-5 and Fe(BF4)2 solution. Second, infiltration of imidazole molecules into the channels of MOF-5 was achieved via a wet impregnation method, giving the precursor of /Zn-MOF-5. Finally, pyrolysis of /Zn-MOF-5 under the optimal conditions produced a porous Fe-N-C carbon catalyst decorated by iron carbide (Fe3C) nanoparticles, which exhibits a better ORR catalytic performance (E1/2 = 0.86 V vs. RHE) and higher stability than the benchmark Pt/C in the alkaline electrolyte. Application in the homemade primary Zn-air battery as the cathode catalyst also achieves a maximum-power density of 85 mW cm−2, and a satisfactory durability (slight decay by 8.4 % in voltage @ 5 mA cm−2 for 70 h). The current work provides a facile and general method to convert MOF-5 into efficient Fe-N-C catalysts with the tunable ORR performance, which may offer more insights into designing highly efficient MOF-derived Fe-N-C electrocatalysts toward ORR.

Molecular engineering metal‐organic frameworks as efficient electrochemical catalysis for water oxidation

Abstract:Metal‐organic framework (MOF) solids with their variable functionalities are relevant for energy conversion technologies. However, the development of electroactive and stable MOFs for electrocatalysis still faces challenges. Here, we design a molecularly engineered MOF system featuring a 2D coordination network based on mercaptan‐metal links (e.g., nickel, as for Ni(DMBD)‐MOF). The crystal structure is solved from microcrystals by continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) technique. Computational results indicate a metallic electronic structure of Ni(DMBD)‐MOF due to the Ni‐S coordination, highlighting the effective design of the thiol ligand for enhancing electro‐conductivity. Additionally, both experimental and theoretical studies indicate that (DMBD)‐MOF offers advantages in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over non‐thiol (e.g., 1,4‐benzene dicarboxylic acid) analog (BDC)‐MOF, because it poses fewer energy barriers during the rate‐limiting *O intermediate formation step. Iron‐substituted NiFe(DMBD)‐MOF achieves a current density of 100 mA·cm−2 at a small overpotential of 280 mV, indicating a new MOF platform for efficient OER catalysis. Morphology-controlled synthesis of metal-organic frameworks derived lattice plane-altered iron oxide for efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts

Abstract:Developing efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and long durability is extraordinarily desirable. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal self-sacrificial templates, and their derived electrocatalysts are promising for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, Fe-based MOFs with well-aligned morphologies have been synthesized by elaborately tuning the competitive coordinated cations from diverse metal sources and solvent systems through a one-step solvothermal method. In this process, the competitive coordination with the metal sites between the ligands and the solvent molecules allows the feasibility to regulate the morphologies of these MOF precursors. After pyrolysis, the resulting Fe2O3 compounds not only inherit the morphologies of the precursors, but also expose different active lattice planes, producing disparate intrinsic active sites. Particularly, the concave octahedral (CO)-Fe2O3 with higher active facets and more accessible surface-active sites exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity and stability for ORR, OER and HER compared with other morphologies and structures. This competitive coordination strategy paves an innovative and feasible pathway for morphology- and structure-controlled MOFs derivatives with tailored catalytic centers toward electrochemical energy storage and convention.

Abstract:The preparation of low-cost and high-activity oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is a technical bottleneck in the field of electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with low-cost transition metals have attracted increasing attention in the catalytic field, yet the metal atoms that are the main active sites are still ambiguous. Here, we synthesized a series of amorphous ternary Fex(NiCu)3-x-MOFs via ultrasonic method. The optimal amorphous FeNiCu-MOF is found to be able to supply a current density of 10 mA cm-2 merely at a low overpotential of 260 mV with a small Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1 and exhibits high durability over 24 h. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the Fe atoms are the main active sites for OER in FeNiCu-MOF. This work shows that amorphous ternary MOFs have great potential for application in OER electrocatalysts due to the multiple synergistic effect and amorphous MOFs structure.
