Abstract:Metagratings manipulating the wavefront with a subwavelength volume have been widely explored in recent years for their potential applications in optical beam routers, such as laser beam splitters and combiners. Current metagratings are hampered from practical beam rerouting due to inhibitive computational load of engineering design and expensive nanofabrication cost. In this work, we apply the emerging concept of supercell metagratings, which arranges random binary gratings of a unit cell in a one-dimensional periodicity, to simplify such design and fabrication processes. A high-performance inverse design framework for the supercell gratings is proposed. In such a framework, we use coupled wave algorithm as a fast-converging electromagnetic solver for the forward calculation and particle swarm optimization algorithm for the backward optimization. By manipulating the building blocks of a unit cell, specific diffraction orders of supercell gratings can be intentionally strengthened or eliminated. We finally realize high-efficiency, broadband and multi-functionality optical beam splitters and combiners both in visible and near-infrared regimes. We envision that the proposed method offers an avenue towards the mass production realization of flat optics.

Abstract:Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) refers to the far-field, strong, spike radiation generated by the interaction of the evanescent Coulomb field of the moving charged particles and the surrounding medium. In applying SPR for particle detection and nanoscale on-chip light sources, wavelength tunability is desired. Here we report on tunable SPR achieved by moving an electron beam parallel to a two-dimensional (2D) metallic nanodisk array. By in-plane rotating the nanodisk array, the emission spectrum of the SPR splits into two peaks, with the shorter-wavelength peak blueshifted and the longer-wavelength one redshifted by increasing the tuning angle. This effect originates from the fact that the electrons fly effectively over a one-dimensional (1D) quasicrystal projected from the surrounding 2D lattice, and the wavelength of SPR is modulated by quasiperiodic characteristic lengths. The experimental data are in agreement with the simulated ones. We suggest that this tunable radiation provides free-electron-driven tunable multiple photon sources at the nanoscale.

Abstract: Smith-Purcell radiation is generated by a charged particle beam passing close to the surface of a diffraction grating which has a strong dependency of the emitted radiation intensity on the form of the grating profile. For relativistic electron beam, it is important to take into account the number of grating periods in practical SPR setups. In this paper, the theoretical investigations of Smith-Purcell radiation from a three-dimensional bunch of relativistic electrons that moves at constant speed parallel to an electrically perfectly conducting grating with finite rectangular grooves are carried out by using the modal matching method. This model may offer a new efficient tool for terahertz production by SPR interaction and for nondestructive bunch-length measurements by SPR.

Abstract:The special Smith-Purcell radiation (S-SPR), which is from the radiating eigen modes of a grating, has remarkable higher intensity than the ordinary Smith-Purcell radiation. Yet in previous studies, the gratings were treated as perfect conductor without considering the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) which are of significance for the nano-scale gratings especially in the optical region. In present paper, the rigorous theoretical investigations on the S-SPR from a nano-grating with SPPs taken into consideration are carried out. The dispersion relations and radiation characteristics are obtained, and the results are verified by simulations. According to the analyses, the tunable light radiation can be achieved by the S-SPR from a nano-grating, which offers a new prospect for developing the nano-scale light sources.

Abstract:The interaction between electrons and matter is an effective means of light emission, through mechanisms including Cherenkov radiation and Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR). In this study, we show that the superlight inverse Doppler effects can be realized in reverse Smith–Purcell radiation excited by a free electron beam with a homogeneous substrate. In particular, we find that two types of anomalous SPR exist in the homogenous substrate: special SPR and reverse SPR. Our results reveal that the electron velocity can be tuned to simultaneously excite different combinations of normal SPR, special SPR, and reverse SPR. The proposed manifold light radiation mechanism can offer greater versatility in controlling and shaping SPR.

Abstract:The Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR) is a promising way for generating terahertz emission, which has tremendous application prospects. Yet, the conventional SPR schemes generally utilize the Gaussian electron beam/bunch with round cross section (also called a pencil beam) to interact with a planar grating. The shape mismatching between the electron beam and the grating essentially restricts the interaction efficiency together with the radiation intensity. To counteract this effect, we propose to use side-opening cylindrical gratings (SOCGs) to replace planar gratings. Detailed theoretical analyses using the surface-current model and mode-matching method are performed for the first time. A train of premodulated electron bunches is proposed to drive the SOCG, on which the electron bunches are further micro-bunched by interacting with the surface waves. The multi-bunched electron beam then generates multi-color coherent SPR at the superimposed harmonics of the train of bunches. Compared with that from a planar grating, the radiation intensity from the SOCG can be significantly enhanced, indicating that it is a promising way of developing high-power terahertz wave sources.

Abstract:Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) is electromagnetic radiation generated by free electrons passing over a periodic grating. Here, having the electron beam pass through 30 nm wide slots in an Al grating greatly shortens the SPR wavelength, and a directional, ultra-broadband, tunable light source spanning lambda(0) approximate to 230-1100 nm is demonstrated. By adjusting the electron energy, backward SPR can be tuned over lambda(0) approximate to 251-340 nm. This work greatly extends the wavelength of SPR from the previously reported 320 nm to 230 nm, and provides a means of realizing an integrated free-electron broadband light source covering the deep ultraviolet. Abstract:Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) occurs when an electron skims above a spatial grating, but the fixed momentum compensation from the static grating imposes limitations on the emission wavelength. It has been discovered that a temporally periodic system can provide energy compensation to generate light emissions in free space. Here, we introduce temporal SPR (t-SPR) emerging from a time grating and propose a generalized t-SPR dispersion equation to predict the relationship between radiation frequency, direction, electron velocity, modulation period, and harmonic orders. Compared to conventional SPR, t-SPR can: 1) Provide a versatile platform for manipulating SPR emission through temporal modulation (e.g., period, amplitude, wave shape). 2) Exhibit strong robustness to the electron-grating separation, alleviating the constraints associated with extreme electron near-field excitation. 3) Introduce additional energy channels through temporal modulation, enhancing and amplifying emission.

Upper Bound of Efficiency for Smith-Purcell Emission and Evanescent-to-propagating Wave Conversion in Metal-Groove Metasurfaces

Abstract:When a charged particle moves parallel and close to the surface of a metasurface, intense Smith-Purcell radiation can be observed at resonant frequencies. Here, we present a systematic investigation on the Smith-Purcell radiation and evanescent-to-propagating wave conversion in metal-groove metasurfaces. Based on a coupled mode theory, analytic formulas are derived for the resonant frequency, Q-factor, and wave conversion efficiency at resonant frequency. The accuracy of the formulas is verified by numerical simulations. It is found that the resonant frequency and Q-factor depend on the depth and filling ratio of the grooves, respectively. A high Q-factor can be obtained by decreasing the filling ratio of the grooves. As the Q-factor increases, the wave conversion efficiency at resonant frequency increase but exhibits an upper limit. Such an upper bound of efficiency (Cr,max = 4) can be approached at a moderate Q-factor (Q = 16) or an optimal filling ratio of the grooves (fs = 0.05). Our results may benefit the construction of compact high-power free-electron light sources.

Abstract:Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR) with broadly tunable spectra has attracted attention in light emission, and this free‐electron‐driven source shows great potential in illumination fields, such as terahertz sources, ultra‐compact light sources, free‐electron lasers, etc. However, it remains difficult to control the polarization properties of SPR and realize a free‐electron chiral light source. In this work, the chiral SPR with the maximum chirality (>40%) is acquired in a periodic stacked nanosquare light‐well, and the radiation chirality is manipulated by variations of the designed electron beam excitation positions. Furthermore, this work reveals that the chiroptical effect originates in the superposition of SPRs with different phases and polarization, which are derived from adjacent sidewalls. This work may deepen the comprehension of electron‐matter interaction and facilitate the development of compact electron‐driven chirality‐tunable source‐on‐chip, highlighting potential applications in photonic integration and binary data processing.
Enhanced Smith–Purcell Radiation by Coupling Surface Plasmons on Meta-Films Array with Resonator Modes on a Grating

Abstract:We propose to use uniformly moving free-electrons to excite an array of alternatedly lined metamaterial thin-films (meta-films) and open-resonators. The surface plasmon polaritons on meta-films and the resonant modes within open-resonators are both excited, and are coupled to each other in the open-resonators. This coupling remarkably increases the intensities of resonant modes, which then generate enhanced coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR). Compared with conventional SPRs, the present scheme combines the advantages of both material and structure profile, and its radiation power is more than an order of magnitude higher. Thus it offers a promising way for developing efficient terahertz sources.

Abstract:When an electron beam passes through the surface of a periodic grating, electromagnetic radiation is generated, and this radiation is referred to as Smith-Purcell radiation. The main methods for modulating Smith-Purcell radiation are changing the grating period and the electron beam voltage. In this study, it is proposed that the Smith-Purcell radiation frequency can be controlled by changing the observation angle, and the experimental observation frequency is consistent with the theory. This has important application significance for the development of free electron radiation sources around Smith-Purcell radiation.

Abstract:Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR) is a phenomenon in that free electrons moving above a periodic structure deliver a part of their kinetic energies to electromagnetic waves. It plays an important role in the development of radiation sources and beam diagnosis. With the development of nanofabrication technology, various complex micro‐nano‐metallic periodic or aperiodic structures have been adopted to improve the efficiency and coherence of SPR. In general, when free electrons move above the metallic periodic structure, the localized surface wave and Smith–Purcell radiation wave are excited simultaneously. As the frequency of the surface wave is always lower than the threshold of Smith–Purcell radiation, the surface wave cannot be radiated. Here, the surface wave is transformed into SPR by using a novel composite subwavelength hole array, thus the SPR is enhanced and it becomes coherent and easy to tune. This work provides a competitive approach to achieve a coherent and high‐efficiency THz radiation source.

Abstract:Swift electrons moving closely parallel to a periodic grating produce far-field radiation of light, which is known as the Smith-Purcell effect. In this letter, we demonstrate that designer Babinet metasurfaces composed of C-aperture resonators offer a powerful control over the polarization state of the Smith-Purcell emission, which can hardly be achieved via traditional gratings. By coupling the intrinsically nonradiative energy bound at the source current sheet to the out-of-plane electric dipole and in-plane magnetic dipole of the C-aperture resonator, we are able to excite cross-polarized light thanks to the bianisotropic nature of the metasurface. The polarization direction of the emitted light is aligned with the orientation of the C-aperture resonator. Furthermore, the efficiency of the Smith-Purcell emission from Babinet metasurfaces is significantly increased by 84%, in comparison with the case of conventional gratings. These findings not only open up a new way to manipulate the electron-beam-induced emission in the near-field region but also promise compact, tunable, and efficient light sources and particle detectors.

Abstract:With the aid of a three-dimensional particle-in-cell code simulation, the enhancement of Smith-Purcell radiation with a surface-plasmon mode excited by a single electron bunch and by a premodulated electron beam is considered in the paper. In the simulation, the model is a grating covered by Ag film. The results demonstrate that when the surface-plasmon mode is excited by a single electron bunch, the maximum radiation occurs at an observation angle depending on the surface-plasmon frequency, and the radiation power can be enhanced more than ten times. And for pre-bunched electron beam excitation, when one of the harmonics of the bunching frequency is resonant with that of the surface-plasmon mode, the radiation power is twenty times more than that from a perfectly conducting grating excited by the same premodulated electron beam.

Abstract:The use and control of the extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength hole arrays has enormous application potential in photonic devices. In this paper, we propose a subwavelength hole array with inner tunnels, for which the Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) with this enhanced transmission phenomenon in THz is excited when the transmission peak locates in the SPR band. The SPR is monitored using particle-in-cell simulations in order to analyze the mechanisms responsible for improving the radiation coherence. Analysis of the electron energy loss reveals that the proposed subwavelength hole array with inner tunnels outperforms a conventional subwavelength grating array with respect to SPR generation efficiency. As SPR plays a significant role in research on particle diagnosis and terahertz radiation sources, the performance of the proposed structure suggests that it has high application potential.

Abstract:The Smith-Purcell radiation in an open resonator, with an inverse trapezoid shaped grating, is presented in this paper by a two dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The simulation model supposes that a mono-energetic electron beam passes over the cylindrical diffraction grating with a strong axial magnetic field constraining the electrons to longitudinal motion. The simulation results indicate that the cavity with inverse trapezoid shaped groove grating has higher output power and lower operating frequency than the one with rectangle shaped groove grating, when the other geometric dimensions of this structure are fixed.
