Abstract:With plans for future long-duration crewed exploration, NASA has identified several high priority potential health risks to astronauts in space. One such risk is a collection of neurologic and ophthalmic findings termed spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). The findings of SANS include optic disc edema, globe flattening, retinal nerve fiber layer thickening, chorioretinal folds, hyperopic shifts, and cotton-wool spots. The cause of SANS was initially thought to be a cephalad fluid shift in microgravity leading to increased intracranial pressure, venous stasis and impaired CSF outflow, but the precise etiology of SANS remains ill defined. Recent studies have explored multiple possible pathogenic mechanisms for SANS including genetic and hormonal factors; a cephalad shift of fluid into the orbit and brain in microgravity; and disruption to the brain glymphatic system. Orbital, ocular, and cranial imaging, both on Earth and in space has been critical in the diagnosis and monitoring of SANS (e.g., fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and orbital/cranial ultrasound). In addition, we highlight near-infrared spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging, two newer modalities with potential use in future studies of SANS. In this manuscript we provide a review of these modalities, outline their current and potential use in space and on Earth, and review the reported major imaging findings in SANS.

Abstract:About 25% of astronauts after short duration spaceflight and 53% of astronauts after long duration spaceflight (LDSF) report a decline in near vision from a hyperopic refractive shift that occurs in microgravity. The refractive change is the primary visual symptom of Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) [1, 2]. SANS encompasses a series of neuro-ocular findings seen in astronauts after LDSF [3]. Clinical examination as well as ocular and orbital imaging studies have demonstrated increased cerebrospinal fluid within the optic nerve sheath, optic disc oedema, flattening of the globe, refractive shifts towards hyperopia, choroidal folds, retinal folds, and cotton wool spots (focal nerve fibre layer ischemia in the retina) in SANS [3,4,5]. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that up to 70% of astronauts experience some degree of optic disc oedema during LDSF [6] and thickening of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) in at least one eye on optical coherence tomography (OCT) [7, 8]. In addition, 20% of astronauts have choroidal folds [3] and OCT evidence for thickened choroid compared to pre-space travel baselines examinations [3].

Abstract:The etiology of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a developing field of research, with many current hypotheses receiving varying degrees of support. In this article, three prominent risk factors including zero gravity conditions, extraterrestrial hypercapnic environments, and individual genetic predisposition are described and their pathophysiological pathways are compared. In addition, glymphatic system impairment is explored as a potential mutual endpoint for these pathways in the development of SANS.

Abstract:Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a unique phenomenon that has been observed in astronauts who have undergone long-duration spaceflight (LDSF). The syndrome is characterized by distinct imaging and clinical findings including optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shift, posterior globe flattening, and choroidal folds. SANS serves a large barrier to planetary spaceflight such as a mission to Mars and has been noted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a high risk based on its likelihood to occur and its severity to human health and mission performance. While it is a large barrier to future spaceflight, the underlying etiology of SANS is not well understood. Current ophthalmic imaging onboard the International Space Station (ISS) has provided further insights into SANS. However, the spaceflight environment presents with unique challenges and limitations to further understand this microgravity-induced phenomenon. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the field of imaging in ophthalmology, particularly in detection and monitoring. In this manuscript, we describe the current hypothesized pathophysiology of SANS and the medical diagnostic limitations during spaceflight to further understand its pathogenesis. We then introduce and describe various AI frameworks that can be applied to ophthalmic imaging onboard the ISS to further understand SANS including supervised/unsupervised learning, generative adversarial networks, and transfer learning. We conclude by describing current research in this area to further understand SANS with the goal of enabling deeper insights into SANS and safer spaceflight for future missions.

Abstract:Importance: Understanding potential predisposing factors associated with spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) may influence its management. Objective: To describe a severe case of SANS associated with 2 potentially predisposing factors. Design, setting, and participants: Ocular testing of and blood collections from a female astronaut were completed preflight, inflight, and postflight in the setting of the International Space Station (ISS). Exposure: Weightlessness throughout an approximately 6-month ISS mission. Mean carbon dioxide (CO2) partial pressure decreased from 2.6 to 1.3 mm Hg weeks before the astronaut's flight day (FD) 154 optical coherence tomography (OCT) session. In response to SANS, 4 B-vitamin supplements (vitamin B6, 100 mg; L-methylfolate, 5 mg; vitamin B12, 1000 μg; and riboflavin, 400 mg) were deployed, unpacked on FD153, consumed daily through FD169, and then discontinued due to gastrointestinal discomfort. Main outcomes and measures: Refraction, distance visual acuity (DVA), optic nerve, and macular assessment on OCT. Results: Cycloplegic refraction was -1.00 diopter in both eyes preflight and +0.50 - 0.25 × 015 in the right eye and +1.00 diopter in the left eye 3 days postflight. Uncorrected DVA was 20/30 OU preflight, 20/16 or better by FD90, and 20/15 OU 3 days postflight. Inflight peripapillary total retinal thickness (TRT) peaked between FD84 and FD126 (right eye, 401 μm preflight, 613 μm on FD84; left eye, 404 μm preflight, 636 μm on FD126), then decreased. Peripapillary choroidal folds, quantified by surface roughness, peaked at 12.7 μm in the right eye on FD154 and 15.0 μm in the left eye on FD126, then decreased. Mean choroidal thickness increased throughout the mission. Genetic analyses revealed 2 minor alleles for MTRR 66 and 2 major alleles for SHMT1 1420 (ie, 4 of 4 SANS risk alleles). One-week postflight, lumbar puncture opening pressure was normal, at 19.4 cm H2O. Conclusions and relevance: To the authors' knowledge, no other report of SANS documented as large of a change in peripapillary TRT or hyperopic shift during a mission as in this astronaut, and this was only 1 of 4 astronauts to experience chorioretinal folds approaching the fovea. This case showed substantial inflight improvement greater than the sensitivity of the measure, possibly associated with B-vitamin supplementation and/or reduction in cabin CO2. However, as a single report, such improvement could be coincidental to these interventions, warranting further evaluation.
Optic Disc Edema and Choroidal Engorgement in Astronauts During Spaceflight and Individuals Exposed to Bed Rest

Abstract:Importance: Optic disc edema develops in astronauts during long-duration spaceflight and is a risk for all future astronauts during spaceflight. Having a ground-based analogue of weightlessness that reproduces critical features of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome will facilitate understanding, preventing, and/or treating this syndrome. Objective: To determine whether the ocular changes in individuals exposed to an analogue of weightlessness are similar to the ocular changes in astronauts exposed to a duration of spaceflight comparable to this analogue of weightlessness. Design, setting, and participants: This cohort study, conducted from 2012 to 2018, investigated 11 healthy test participants before, during, and after 30 days of strict 6° head-down tilt bed rest as well as 20 astronauts before and during approximately 30 days of spaceflight. Data were collected at NASA Johnson Space Center, the German Aerospace Center, and on board the International Space Station. Statistical analysis was performed from February 13 to April 24, 2019. Main outcomes and measures: Peripapillary total retinal thickness and peripapillary choroid thickness quantified from optical coherence tomography images. Results: Peripapillary total retinal thickness increased to a greater degree among 11 individuals (6 men and 5 women; mean [SD] age, 33.4 [8.0 years]) exposed to bed rest than among 20 astronauts (17 men and 3 women; mean [SD] age, 46.0 [6.0] years), with a mean difference between groups of 37 μm (95% CI, 13-61 μm; P = .005). Conversely, choroid thickness did not increase among the individuals exposed to bed rest but increased among the astronauts, resulting in a mean difference between groups of 27 μm (95% CI, 14-41 μm; P < .001). Conclusions and relevance: These findings suggest that strict head-down tilt bed rest produces a different magnitude of edema than occurs after a similar duration of spaceflight, and no change in choroid thickness. It is possible that a mild, long-term elevation in intracranial pressure experienced by individuals exposed to bed rest is greater than the intracranial pressure experienced by astronauts during spaceflight, which may explain the different severity of optic disc edema between the cohorts. Gravitational gradients that remain present during bed rest may explain the lack of increase in choroid thickness during bed rest, which differs from the lack of gravitational gradients during spaceflight. Despite the possibility that different mechanisms may underlie optic disc edema development in modeled and real spaceflight, use of this terrestrial model of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome will be assistive in the development of effective countermeasures that will protect the eyes of astronauts during future space missions.

Abstract:During long-duration spaceflight, astronauts experience headward fluid shifts and expansion of the cerebral perivascular spaces (PVS). A major limitation to our understanding of the changes in brain structure and physiology induced by spaceflight stems from the logistical difficulties of studying astronauts. The current study aimed to determine whether PVS changes also occur on Earth with the spaceflight analog head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR). We examined how the number and morphology of magnetic resonance imaging-visible PVS (MV-PVS) are affected by HDBR with and without elevated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). These environments mimic the headward fluid shifts, body unloading, and elevated CO 2 observed aboard the International Space Station. Additionally, we sought to understand how changes in MV-PVS are associated with signs of Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS), ocular structural alterations that can occur with spaceflight. Participants were separated into two bed rest campaigns: HDBR (60 days) and HDBR + CO 2 (30 days with elevated ambient CO 2 ). Both groups completed multiple magnetic resonance image acquisitions before, during, and post-bed rest. We found that at the group level, neither spaceflight analog affected MV-PVS quantity or morphology. However, when taking into account SANS status, persons exhibiting signs of SANS showed little or no MV-PVS changes, whereas their No-SANS counterparts showed MV-PVS morphological changes during the HDBR + CO 2 campaign. These findings highlight spaceflight analogs as models for inducing changes in MV-PVS and implicate MV-PVS dynamic compliance as a mechanism underlying SANS. These findings may lead to countermeasures to mitigate health risks associated with human spaceflight.

Abstract:Long-duration spaceflight induces changes to the brain and cerebrospinal fluid compartments and visual acuity problems known as spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). The clinical relevance of these changes and whether they equally affect crews of different space agencies remain unknown. We used MRI to analyze the alterations occurring in the perivascular spaces (PVS) in NASA and European Space Agency astronauts and Roscosmos cosmonauts after a 6-mo spaceflight on the International Space Station (ISS). We found increased volume of basal ganglia PVS and white matter PVS (WM-PVS) after spaceflight, which was more prominent in the NASA crew than the Roscosmos crew. Moreover, both crews demonstrated a similar degree of lateral ventricle enlargement and decreased subarachnoid space at the vertex, which was correlated with WM-PVS enlargement. As all crews experienced the same environment aboard the ISS, the differences in WM-PVS enlargement may have been due to, among other factors, differences in the use of countermeasures and high-resistive exercise regimes, which can influence brain fluid redistribution. Moreover, NASA astronauts who developed SANS had greater pre- and postflight WM-PVS volumes than those unaffected. These results provide evidence for a potential link between WM-PVS fluid and SANS.

Abstract:Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) describes a constellation of neuro-ophthalmic findings that have been observed in astronauts during and after long-duration spaceflight [1, 2]. These neuro-ocular changes include optic disc edema (ODE), globe flattening, choroidal folds, and hyperopic refractive error shifts [1, 2]. An increased understanding of SANS emerges as a top priority for space agencies, particularly because this neuro-ocular syndrome could impact the success of future human, longer-duration missions, including a return to the Moon and manned missions to Mars [2]. Up to 70% of all astronauts who complete long-duration missions to the International Space Station develop early signs of ODE as quantified by optical coherence tomography [3]. The precise mechanisms underlying SANS-associated ODE remain incompletely understood and are currently an active focus of research. As discussed below, new findings regarding brain-to-eye transport could shed more light on the pathogenesis of ODE and other ocular changes in astronauts. In 2020, the Nedergaard laboratory discovered an "anterograde ocular glymphatic pathway" which removes fluid and metabolites from the posterior eye into the optic nerve in mice and rats [12]. After intravitreal injection of small tracer molecules, such as exogenous human β-amyloid (hAβ), tracers were transported over the glial lamina via an intra-axonal route in retinal ganglion cell axons and via the perivenous spaces of the retina and optic nerve head, and were further cleared via anterograde ocular glymphatic transport (Fig. 1) [7, 12]. The authors demonstrated that fluid flow from the retina to the optic nerve is driven by the pressure difference between IOP and ICP across the glial lamina and by light-induced pupil constriction [12]. Intriguingly, following tracer injection into the cisterna magna of mice, Cao et al. [18] now found that, under physiological conditions, small tracer molecules like exogenous hAβ were transported along two routes from the brain to the retina. Firstly, hAβ tracer was transported along the myelinated axon spaces within the optic nerve toward the eye. Secondly, hAβ tracer was transported along the perivascular spaces of the central retinal artery in the optic nerve and passed through the lamina cribrosa before being transported along the retinal vessels, ultimately spreading throughout the entire retina. Given that Cao et al. [18] used smaller molecular weight tracers than the previous studies reporting that CSF tracers do not pass through the lamina cribrosa, this suggests that access from the brain into the eye was restricted based upon molecular size. Cao et al. [18] also argued that brain-derived hAβ, following reaching the SAS of the optic nerve, could drain through optic nerve meningeal lymphatic vessels situated in the dura mater, and periorbital lymphatic vessels located in the connective tissue adjacent to the sclera. As noted above, these orbital lymphatic drainage systems may be affected by cephalad fluid shifts of prolonged microgravity, impeding CSF outflow and producing increased optic nerve sheath pressures [1].

Abstract:Background: Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) is a complex pathology threatening the health of astronauts, with incompletely understood causes and no current specific functional diagnostic or screening test. We investigated the use of the differential performance of the visual system (central vs. perimacular visual function) as a candidate marker of SANS-related pathology in a ground-based microgravity analogue. Methods: We used a simple reaction time (SRT) task to visual stimuli, presented in the central and perimacular field of view, as a measure of the overall performance of the visual function, during acute settings (first 10 min) of vertical, bed rest (BR), -6°, and -15° head-down tilt (HDT) presentations in healthy participants (n = 8). We built dose-response models linking the gravitational component to SRT distribution parameters in the central vs. perimacular areas. Results: Acute exposure to microgravity induces detectable changes between SRT distributions in the perimacular vs. central retina (increased mean, standard deviation, and tau component of the ex-Gaussian function) in HDT compared with vertical presentation. Conclusions: Functional testing of the perimacular retina might be beneficial for the earlier detection of SANS-related ailments in addition to regular testing of the central vision. Future diagnostic tests should consider the investigation of the extra-macular areas, particularly towards the optic disc.
Simulation of murine retinal hemodynamics in response to tail suspension

Abstract:The etiology of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) remains unclear. Recent murine studies indicate there may be a link between the space environment and retinal endothelial dysfunction. Post-fixed control (N = 4) and 14-day tail-suspended (TS) (N = 4) mice eye samples were stained and imaged for the vessel plexus and co-located regions of endothelial cell death. A custom workflow combined whole-mounted and tear reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) spherical retinal plexus models with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation that accounted for the Fåhræus-Lindqvist effect and boundary conditions that accommodated TS fluid pressure measurements and deeper capillary layer blood flow distribution. TS samples exhibited reduced surface area (4.6 ± 0.5 mm 2 vs. 3.5 ± 0.3 mm 2 , P = 0.010) and shorter lengths between branches in small vessels (<10 μm, 69.5 ± 0.6 μm vs. 60.4 ± 1.1 μm, P < 0.001). Wall shear stress (WSS) and pressure were higher in TS mice compared to controls, particularly in smaller vessels (<10 μm, WSS: 6.57 ± 1.08 Pa vs. 4.72 ± 0.67 Pa, P = 0.034, Pressure: 72.04 ± 3.14 mmHg vs. 50.64 ± 6.74 mmHg, P = 0.004). Rates of retinal endothelial cell death were variable in TS mice compared to controls. WSS and pressure were generally higher in cell death regions, both within and between cohorts, but significance was variable and limited to small to medium-sized vessels (<20 μm). These findings suggest a link may exist between emulated microgravity and retinal endothelial dysfunction that may have implications for SANS development. Abstract:Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) alters the vision of astronauts during long-duration spaceflights. Previously, the current authors have discussed the similarities and differences between SANS and idiopathic intracranial hypertension to try to elucidate a possible pathophysiology. Recently, a theory has been advanced that SANS may occur secondary to failure of the glymphatic system caused by venous dilatation within the brain and optic nerves. There is recent evidence to suggest glymphatic obstruction occurs in childhood hydrocephalus, multiple sclerosis and syringomyelia due to venous outflow dilatation similar to that proposed in SANS. The purpose of the current paper is to discuss the similarities and differences between the known CSF and venous pathophysiology in SANS with these other terrestrial diseases, to see if they can shed any further light on the underlying cause of this microgravity-induced disease.

Neuro-ophthalmological changes in healthy females exposed to a 5-day dry immersion: a pilot study

Abstract:After exposure to microgravity, astronauts undergo microgravity-induced thoraco-cephalic fluid shift, which may lead to ocular changes called "spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome" (SANS). The onset of SANS may be multifactorial, including a potential elevation in intracranial pressure. Moreover, little is known about the impact of spaceflight on SANS in women due to the fact that fewer female astronauts have spent time in long-term missions. The objective is to determine whether similar ophthalmological changes occur in healthy women after short-term exposure to microgravity. The auto-refractometer was used to determine objective refraction. The best corrected distance visual acuity was assessed with a Monoyer chart. The ocular axial length was assessed using optical biometry. The applanation tonometry was used to determine intraocular pressure. Peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (pRNFLT), macular total retinal thickness, and ganglion cell complex (GCC) were measured using optical coherence tomography. Ocular axial length is reduced after DI. pRNFL is thickest after DI specifically in the temporal, temporal-inferior, and nasal-inferior quadrants. Macular total retinal at the inferior quadrant of the 6-mm ring is thickest after DI. Global GCC is thinnest after DI. In this study, 5 days of DI induces slight but significant ophthalmological changes in women. However, these subtle changes do not correspond to criteria defined in SANS.

Abstract:Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is one of the largest physiologic barriers to spaceflight and requires evaluation and mitigation for future planetary missions. As the spaceflight environment is a clinically limited environment, the purpose of this research is to provide automated, early detection and prognosis of SANS with a machine learning model trained and validated on astronaut SANS optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. In this study, we present a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) incorporating an EfficientNet encoder for detecting SANS from OCT images titled "SANS-CNN." We used 6303 OCT B-scan images for training/validation (80%/20% split) and 945 for testing with a combination of terrestrial images and astronaut SANS images for both testing and validation. SANS-CNN was validated with SANS images labeled by NASA to evaluate accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. To evaluate real-world outcomes, two state-of-the-art pre-trained architectures were also employed on this dataset. We use GRAD-CAM to visualize activation maps of intermediate layers to test the interpretability of SANS-CNN's prediction. SANS-CNN achieved 84.2% accuracy on the test set with an 85.6% specificity, 82.8% sensitivity, and 84.1% F1-score. Moreover, SANS-CNN outperforms two other state-of-the-art pre-trained architectures, ResNet50-v2 and MobileNet-v2, in accuracy by 21.4% and 13.1%, respectively. We also apply two class-activation map techniques to visualize critical SANS features perceived by the model. SANS-CNN represents a CNN model trained and validated with real astronaut OCT images, enabling fast and efficient prediction of SANS-like conditions for spaceflight missions beyond Earth's orbit in which clinical and computational resources are extremely limited.

Abstract:The elevation in the optic nerve sheath (ONS) pressure (ONSP) due to microgravity-induced headward fluid shift is the primary hypothesized contributor to SANS. This longitudinal study aims to quantify the axial plane of the optic nerve subarachnoid space area (ONSSA), which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and expands with elevated ONSP during and after head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (BR). 36 healthy male volunteers (72 eyes) underwent a 90-day strict 6° HDT BR. Without obtaining the pre-HDT data, measurements were performed on days 30, 60, and 90 during HDT and at 6 recovery time points extended to 180-days (R + 180) in a supine position. Portable B-scan ultrasound was performed using the 12 MHz linear array probe binocularly. The measurements of the ONS and the calculation of the ONSSA were performed with ImageJ 1.51 analysis software by two experienced observers in a masked manner. Compared to R + 180, the ONSSA on HDT30, HDT60, and HDT90 exhibited a consistently significant distention of 0.44 mm 2 (95% CI: 0.13 to 0.76 mm 2 , P = 0.001), 0.45 mm 2 (95% CI: 0.15 to 0.75 mm 2 , P = 0.001), and 0.46 mm 2 (95% CI: 0.15 to 0.76 mm 2 , P < 0.001), respectively, and recovered immediately after HDT on R + 2. Such small changes in the ONSSA were below the lateral resolution limit of ultrasound (0.4 mm) and may not be clinically relevant, possibly due to ONS hysteresis causing persistent ONS distension. Future research can explore advanced quantitative portable ultrasound-based techniques and establish comparisons containing the pre-HDT measurements to deepen our understanding of SANS.

Optic nerve sheath fenestration (ONSF) improves or stabilizes visual function in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension; however, its role in CVST awaits elucidation. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of ONSF in resolving CVST-induced visual impairment based on long-term observation.

Abstract:Purpose: Retina is a unique part of the central nervous system (CNS) for visualizing the processes of axonal and neuronal degeneration. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows direct visualization and measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, macular volume, and optic disc (OD) parameters. One of the disorders associated with atrophy in different brain regions is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In the present study, we aimed to determine OD and RNFL changes measured by OCT for investigating the progress of neurodegeneration development in OSAS, excluding all the other conditions that can directly affect RNFL thickness and optic nerve parameters. Methods: Both eyes of 101 patients with OSAS and 20 controls were investigated by OCT. Full-night polysomnography (PSG) and ophthalmologic examination including automated visual field (VF) examination and OCT were performed in all of the patients. Results: According to the OSAS grading, patients were grouped as mild (n=15), moderate (n=27), and severe (n=59). We found significant decrease in RNFL thickness only in the patients with severe OSAS compared with the other groups and decreased macular ganglion cell thickness in the severe OSAS group compared with the control group. VF parameters were significantly worsened in all the OSAS subgroups compared to the control group. We found different data such as normal or increased optic nerve parameters as result of subtle OD edema, which may mask possible peripapillar axonal loss. Conclusions: We think that evaluation of neurodegeneration in OSAS is not always possible by examining OD and RNFL because there are difficulties due to the confounding issues of cerebral atrophy and OD edema.

Abstract:Ocular trauma or other ocular conditions can be significantly debilitating in space. A literature review of over 100 articles and NASA evidence books, queried for eye related trauma, conditions, and exposures was conducted. Ocular trauma and conditions during NASA space missions during the Space Shuttle Program and ISS through Expedition 13 in 2006 were reviewed. There were 70 corneal abrasions, 4 dry eyes, 4 eye debris, 5 complaints of ocular irritation, 6 chemical burns, and 5 ocular infections noted. Unique exposures on spaceflight, such as foreign bodies, including celestial dust, which may infiltrate the habitat and contact the ocular surface, as well as chemical and thermal injuries due to prolonged CO2 and heat exposure were reported. Diagnostic modalities used to evaluate the above conditions in space flight include vision questionnaires, visual acuity and Amsler grid testing, fundoscopy, orbital ultrasound, and ocular coherence tomography. Several types of ocular injuries and conditions, mostly affecting the anterior segment, are reported. Further research is necessary to understand the greatest ocular risks that astronauts face and how better we can prevent, but also diagnose and treat these conditions in space.
