Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to develop the field of sports medicine. It can be used to improve injury prevention by analyzing player performance data, biomechanical factors and physiological indicators to identify injury risk and develop personalized prevention programs. Likewise, AI can improve training strategies by analyzing data and performance metrics to create individualized and precise training programs, optimizing intensity and duration while avoiding overtraining. Additionally, AI can redefine rehabilitation by dynamically influencing rehabilitation programs, providing real-time feedback, and customizing therapies based on individual recovery. In this editorial we present in detail the benefits of AI in these three areas and we discuss ethical considerations for using AI as a powerful tool in an appropriate way.

Abstract:Purpose: Technological advancements are transforming the field of sports science and medicine, leading to a new era of performance improvement and injury prevention. Digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI) are at the forefront of these innovations, working together to redefine athletic training and monitoring. This editorial offers a comprehensive overview of the integration of digital twins and AI in sports science, with a focus on their potential applications, challenges, and future developments. By utilizing sensor data, AI algorithms, and biometrics, digital twins create virtual replicas of athletes, enabling precise performance monitoring and personalized training programs. Conclusions: Large datasets generated by AI can be used to predict and prevent injuries, as well as to enhance communication among stakeholders. Despite the promises, challenges such as privacy concerns and data accuracy need to be addressed. Future advancements will concentrate on sensor accuracy, AI algorithm refinement, and broader applications. The editorial highlights exciting research opportunities, including predictive injury models, real-time performance monitoring, and longitudinal health studies. Ultimately, the collaboration between digital twins and AI represents a paradigm shift in sports science, with the potential to revolutionize athlete well-being and performance optimization.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown tremendous growth over the last decade, with the more recent development of clinical applications in health care. The ability of AI to synthesize large amounts of complex data automatically allows health care providers to access previously unavailable metrics and thus enhance and personalize patient care. These innovations include AI-assisted diagnostic tools, prediction models for each treatment pathway, and various tools for workflow optimization. Abstract:Abstract The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is evolving in different fields of cardiology and in particular in sports cardiology. Artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities to enhance risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of athletes. This article explores the application of AI in various aspects of sports cardiology, including imaging techniques, genetic testing, and wearable devices. The use of machine learning and deep neural networks enables improved analysis and interpretation of complex datasets. However, ethical and legal dilemmas must be addressed, including informed consent, algorithmic fairness, data privacy, and intellectual property issues. The integration of AI technologies should complement the expertise of physicians, allowing for a balanced approach that optimizes patient care and outcomes. Ongoing research and collaborations are vital to harness the full potential of AI in sports cardiology and advance our management of cardiovascular health in athletes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study human-AI collaboration protocols, a design-oriented construct aimed at establishing and evaluating how humans and AI can collaborate in cognitive tasks. We applied this construct in two user studies involving 12 specialist radiologists (the knee MRI study) and 44 ECG readers of varying expertise (the ECG study), who evaluated 240 and 20 cases, respectively, in different collaboration configurations. We confirm the utility of AI support but find that XAI can be associated with a "white-box paradox", producing a null or detrimental effect. We also find that the order of presentation matters: AI-first protocols are associated with higher diagnostic accuracy than human-first protocols, and with higher accuracy than both humans and AI alone. Our findings identify the best conditions for AI to augment human diagnostic skills, rather than trigger dysfunctional responses and cognitive biases that can undermine decision effectiveness.

Abstract:In the realm of sports education and performance analysis, there exists a pressing need to overcome barriers such as geographical limitations, cost constraints, and time constraints inherent in traditional teaching methodologies. In response to these challenges, this paper presents a novel sports education system leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This all-inclusive system allows for easy access to sports academies and training facilities based on geographic proximity by introducing an innovative teaching platform driven by AI and GPS integration. Moreover, it offers an extensive library of sports laws, sophisticated strategies, and professional advice, encouraging ongoing skill development. Defining objectives and intently noticing execution are made simpler by the framework’s combination of man-made intelligence driven estimates, like triumph probabilities. The central aim of this initiative is to redefine the landscape of sports education by offering a convenient, cost-effective, and highly efficient solution accessible to individuals at all proficiency levels. In addition to its educational advantages, the system is poised to make significant contributions to sports analytics, supplying extensive data and insights for both researchers and practitioners. This proposal advocates a progressive approach that moves beyond traditional methods, heralding a new era in sports education and performance analytics.

Abstract:Sports medicine, an essential branch of orthopedics, focuses on preserving, restoring, improving, and rebuilding the function of the human motor system. As a thriving interdisciplinary field, sports medicine attracts not only the interest of the orthopedic community, but also artificial intelligence (AI). In this study, our team summarized the potential applications of GPT-4 in sports medicine including diagnostic imaging, exercise prescription, medical supervision, surgery treatment, sports nutrition, and science research. In our opinion, it is impossible that GPT-4 could make sports physicians obsolete. Instead, it could become an indispensable scientific assistant for sport doctors in future.

Abstract:Background Artificial intelligence (AI) represents the latest industrial revolution, bringing potentially boundless opportunities with transformative advances within medicine, including injury and illness prediction, imaging interpretation and outcome measures, among others.1 AI entered elite sports approximately 30 years ago2 with a particular focus initially on two areas: sports performance and predicting injury.3 AI applications are now growing at a formidable rate, with new applications such as assisting player recruitment, officiating, tactical decision-making and broadcasting.4 The influence of AI within elite sport is impossible to ignore, which led the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to develop the Olympic AI Agenda (OAIA), outlining various focus areas where AI should be leveraged to produce positive benefits. May Artificial Intelligence Be a Co-Author on an Academic Paper?

Abstract:Dear Colleagues, Recently, for an article submitted to the European Journal of Therapeutics, it was reported that the paper may have been written with artificial intelligence support at a rate of more than 50% in the preliminary examination made with Turnitin. However, the authors did not mention this in the article’s material method or explanations section. Fortunately, the article’s out-of-date content and fundamental errors in its methodology allowed us no difficulty making the desk rejection decision. On the other hand, similar situations that we may encounter later caused us to discuss how we would decide when the artificial intelligence support of the articles was written. The general opinion that we have adopted and currently available in the literature is that if artificial intelligence is used while writing an article, how artificial intelligence is used in the methodology should be written in detail. Moreover, we encountered a much more exciting situation during our evaluation. In a few academic studies, we have seen that artificial intelligence is added as a co-author. On July 06, 2023, in the Web of Science, using the advanced search, we found four articles with the author name ChatGPT [1]. We have determined that ChatGPT is the author in one of these articles [2] and the Group Author in three [3-5]. Lee [6] stated that although artificial intelligence tools are much more advanced than search engines, they cannot be an author regarding research ethics because they cannot take responsibility for what they write. Similarly, Goto and Katanoda [7] stated that it is the author’s responsibility to confirm that the texts written by ChatGPT are correct. However, Pourhoseingholi et al. [8] reported that keeping up with technology is inevitable. Additionally, they said that“this action will be more fruitful and practical in extended dimensions when international institutes like ICMJE or COPE come up with the appropriate adjustments and establish robust criteria to scheme the AI authorship”. Most probably, the use of artificial intelligence applications in scientific articles and whether it can be a co-author in these papers will be discussed soon. Abstract:Wearable technologies are small electronic and mobile devices with wireless communication capabilities that can be worn on the body as a part of devices, accessories or clothes. Sensors incorporated within wearable devices enable the collection of a broad spectrum of data that can be processed and analysed by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. In this narrative review, we performed a literature search of the MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus databases. We included any original studies that used sensors to collect data for a sporting event and subsequently used an AI-based system to process the data with diagnostic, treatment or monitoring intents. The included studies show the use of AI in various sports including basketball, baseball and motor racing to improve athletic performance. We classified the studies according to the stage of an event, including pre-event training to guide performance and predict the possibility of injuries; during events to optimise performance and inform strategies; and in diagnosing injuries after an event. Based on the included studies, AI techniques to process data from sensors can detect patterns in physiological variables as well as positional and kinematic data to inform how athletes can improve their performance. Although AI has promising applications in sports medicine, there are several challenges that can hinder their adoption. We have also identified avenues for future work that can provide solutions to overcome these challenges.

Abstract:Today’s science fiction is tomorrow’s science fact. — Isaac Asimov In the ever-changing world of academic publishing, the Journal of Orthopedic Case Reports (JOCR) is taking a bold step forward by becoming the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced journal. This groundbreaking move raises an important question: Should AI be used in academic writing? Is it ethical, or does it somehow feel like cheating? Many people worry about whether AI should help write articles or if journals will accept articles written with AI assistance. However, the real question is different: Are we ready for a future where using AI in academic writing becomes the norm? This is not just a futuristic idea; it is a revolutionary one. Academic journals aim to share scientific knowledge, and if AI can help make this knowledge clearer and more impactful, especially for non-English authors, it is a game-changer. Starting from the August issue, JOCR will embrace AI-enhanced features. Once an article is accepted after thorough reviews and revisions, authors will be given access to the OrthoAI platform. This tool will help polish their work, improving grammar, readability, and context, making the article more engaging and easier to understand. It respects the original content by not adding new information or altering the reference order. Being a specialized orthopedic AI, OrthoAI understands the field deeply. With over 8000 users interacting with it daily for the past 9 months, OrthoAI is uniquely tuned to the needs and perspectives of the orthopedic community. Each AI-enhanced article will proudly display an acknowledgment: “This article is enhanced using OrthoAI.” This transparency ensures everyone knows AI was used, addressing any ethical concerns.
