Abstract:The eccentric latent heat storage (LHS) unit is incredibly helpful in addressing the problem of low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs). However, the optimal position for eccentric arrangement under different conditions and geometries has yet to be determined. In present work, a novel parameter, termed the "eccentric area ratio", is proposed to optimize the eccentric structure of horizontal double-tube LHS units for melting process, i.e. the relationship between the dominated areas of natural convection and heat conduction for enhancing the unit heat transfer. The melting characteristics and exergy efficiency of the eccentric structure are numerically examined under different pipe diameter ratios and inlet temperatures of heat transfer fluid (HTF). The results show that the same optimal eccentric area ratio of 16:1 has been obtained across different working conditions and unit configurations. Compared with the concentric positions, the melting time of eccentric area ratio of 16:1 are respectively reduced by 35.4 %, 45.8 % and 54.6 % for three different pipe diameter ratios ( D/d ) of 5:1, 4:1 and 3:1, and reduced by 45.8 %, 46.3 % and 47.1 % for three different inlet temperatures 85 °C, 90 °C and 95 °C. It is indicated that the contrast between the upper and lower areas of the annular PCM space is an inherent factor impacting the performance of the eccentric LHS unit. However, the eccentric structure experiences greater exergy losses than the concentric one during melting. Further, higher exergy efficiency can be obtained at larger pipe diameter ratios and higher inlet temperatures with the same eccentric area ratio. The proposed parameter "eccentric area ratio" can be applied not only to evaluate the thermal performance of double-tube LHS units but also to optimize the geometric structure in real applications.
