Abstract:Fe-Ni alloys possess a range of excellent properties that are closely related to their composition, making them widely used in microelectronics, precision components, and electrocatalysis. Electrodeposition is a primary method for preparing Fe-Ni alloys. The codeposition process of Fe and Ni exhibits a characteristic preferential Fe deposition, resulting in a higher Fe/Ni atom ratio in the deposits than the Fe/Ni ion ratio in the electrolyte, which is categorized as anomalous codeposition. This paper reviews research findings on the mechanisms behind this anomalous codeposition, focusing on chemical reaction equilibrium and electrode kinetics. Key aspects include the hydrogen evolution side reaction, changes in near-surface pH, concentration profiles of main ion species near the cathode, and the competitive adsorption behavior of metal intermediate species. Additionally, the preparation and process parameters affecting alloy composition and underlying mechanisms are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to enhance understanding and control of the anomalous codeposition in Fe-Ni alloys, offering insights into the electrodeposition of other iron-group metals and expanding perspectives on metal electrodeposition.
On the Electrodeposition of Nickel–zinc Alloys from a Eutectic-Based Ionic Liquid

Abstract:The electrodeposition behavior of Ni–Zn alloys upon Cu was investigated in a choline chloride–urea (1:2 molar ratio) eutectic-based ionic liquid (1:2 ChCl–urea IL) bath containing 0.1M NiCl2 and 0.4M ZnCl2. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the more noble metal, Ni, deposits preferentially to Zn. Ni–Zn co-deposition was achieved via deposition of Zn upon deposited Ni, at potentials more negative than that of Ni deposition, resulting in a Zn content always less than 50at.%. Chronoamperometric investigations combined with SEM reveal the nucleation mechanism changes from three-dimensional progressive to instantaneous, followed diffusion-limited growth during Zn-codeposition. The Ni content of electrodeposits could be controlled by deposition potential and current density. Ni–Zn deposits were solid solutions, and deposits containing Ni>∼87at.% display best corrosion resistance due to a dense and crack-free structure.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising anode materials but suffers from inhomogeneous Li deposition, which is a limiting factor for the practical application of Li metal batteries. Some metals with high lithiophilicity are extremely recognized for achieving uniform Li deposition, but how these metals work is still unknown. Herein, the role of lithiophilic metals on the Li-plating process is explored on the basis of the experiments and theoretical calculations. The nucleation barrier is significantly reduced, owing to the alloying reaction between metals and Li species. The Li ions are subsequently attracted by the above favorable lithiophilic nucleus and conversed into Li atoms as a result of the high binding energy between the Li species and alloy nuclei. Besides, deposited Li diffuses into the electrode lattice via the channels with a low diffusion barrier. By construction of metal sites as well as the formation of alloy nuclei with high lithiophilicity, a dendrite-free anode can be realized. This study sheds fresh light on the lithiophilic electrochemistry and dendrite inhibition strategies for safe and high-energy-density Li metal batteries.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is deemed to be the high-energy-density anode material for next generation batteries, but its practical application is impeded by the uneven electrodeposition during charge of battery, which leads to the low Coulombic efficiency and potential safety issue. Here, multiscale modeling is fabricated to understand the morphology evolution of Li during electrodeposition process, from the self-diffusion of Li adatoms on electrode surface, to the nucleation process, and to the formation of Li microstructures, revealing the correlation between final morphology and deposition substrates. Energy batteries and self-diffusion of Li adatom on various substrates (lithium, copper, nickel, magnesium, and silver) result in the different nucleation size, which is calculated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation based on classical nucleation theory. Formation of Li substructures that are grown from Li nuclei, is revealed by phase field modeling coupled with cellular automaton method. Our results show that larger Li nuclei is obtained under faster self-diffusion of Li adatom, leading to the low aspect ratio of Li substructures and the subsequent morphology evolution of electrodeposited Li. Furthermore, the electrodeposition of Li is strongly regulated by the selection of substrates, giving the practical guideline of anode design in rechargeable Li metal batteries. It is worthy to mention that this method to investigate the electro-crystallization process involving nucleation and growth can be transplanted to the other metallic anode, such as sodium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, calcium and the like.

Abstract:The application of lithium metal as an anode material for next generation high energy‐density batteries has to overcome the major bottleneck that is the seemingly unavoidable growth of Li dendrites caused by non‐uniform electrodeposition on the electrode surface. This problem must be addressed by clarifying the detailed mechanism. In this work the mass‐transfer of Li‐ions is investigated, a key process controlling the electrochemical reaction. By a phase field modeling approach, the Li‐ion concentration and the electric fields are visualized to reveal the role of three key experimental parameters, operating temperature, Li‐salt concentration in electrolyte, and applied current density, on the microstructure of deposited Li. It is shown that a rapid depletion of Li‐ions on electrode surface, induced by, e.g., low operating temperature, diluted electrolyte and a high applied current density, is the underlying driving force for non‐uniform electrodeposition of Li. Thus, a viable route to realize a dendrite‐free Li plating process would be to mitigate the depletion of Li‐ions on the electrode surface. The methodology and results in this work may boost the practical applicability of Li anodes in Li metal batteries and other battery systems using metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium, a representative alkali metal, holds the coveted status of the "holy grail" in the realm of next-generation rechargeable batteries, owing to its remarkable theoretical specific capacity and low electrode potential. However, the inherent reactivity of Li metal inevitably results in the formation of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on its surface, adding complexity to the Li electrodeposition process compared to conventional metal electrodeposition. Attaining uniform Li deposition is crucial for ensuring stable, long-cycle performance and high Coulombic efficiency in Li metal batteries, which requires a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors governing the electrodeposition process. This review delves into the intricate kinetics of Li electrodeposition, elucidating the multifaceted factors that influence charge and mass transfer kinetics. The intrinsic relationship between charge transfer kinetics and Li deposition is scrutinized, exploring how parameters such as current density and electrode potential impact Li nucleation and growth, as well as dendrite formation. Additionally, the applicability of classical mass-transfer-controlled electrodeposition models to Li anode systems is evaluated, considering the influence of ionic concentration and solvation structure on Li+ transport, SEI formation, and subsequent deposition kinetics. The pivotal role of SEI compositional structure and physicochemical properties in governing charge and mass transfer processes is underscored, with an emphasis on strategies for regulating Li deposition kinetics from both electrolyte and SEI perspectives. Finally, future directions in Li electrodeposition research are outlined, emphasizing the importance of ongoing exploration from a kinetic standpoint to fully unlock the potential of Li metal batteries.
Dendrite-tamed Deposition Kinetics Using Single-Atom Zn Sites for Li Metal Anode

Abstract:The progress of lithium metal batteries (i.e. Li-air and Li-S) is severely cramped by the unstable electrochemical performance and safety concern caused by the dendrite growth of Li metal anode. Here, we demonstrate that the single-atom Zn sites can drive the high dimensional Li deposition kinetics without dendrite. Theoretical calculation predicts the higher surface binding energy and lower migration barrier, providing the possibility toward high dimensional Li deposition. Chronoamperometry investigation on Li deposition reveals the facilitated instantaneous nucleation behavior. Electron microscopy and in situ optical microscopy further identify the high dimensional Li deposition without dendrite-forming. Benefiting from the improved deposition kinetics, Li deposition and stripping performances on ZnSAs achieve low overpotential about 12 mV and high Coulombic efficiency reaching to 100%. Discharging-charging of symmetrical Li-ZnSAs vertical bar Li-ZnSAs cell cycles over 800 h with steady voltage oscillations. The Li-ZnSAs anode applying on Li-S and Li-O-2 batteries can still present stable performance. This work provides a new insight into fundamental understanding of electrochemical deposition of metal anodes by driving high dimensional deposition kinetics using single-atom sites.

Abstract:Lithium metal has long been recognized as the ultimate anode due to its low density, ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity, and lowest electrochemical potential. However, a number of issues, such as the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites and unstable SEI during repeated Li plating/stripping processes, impede its practical application. Herein, uniform Li deposition on metallic current collectors was achieved Via regulating the initial nucleation barrier by coating a thin 3 degrees C GaInSnZn liquid-metal layer on the surface. In the plating process of Li on liquid-metal-coated current collectors, a lithiation process initially occurred by the formation of a Li-rich alloy layer. As this Li-rich alloy layer was lithiophilic, the nucleation barrier was reduced, and Li was readily nucleated and uniformly grown on the alloy sites in the further plating process. As a result, liquid-metal-modified Cu foil exhibited improved coulombic efficiency and a smaller voltage fluctuation in the plating/stripping process. Better electrochemical performance was also demonstrated in full cells with LiFePO4 as the cathode. This work proposes a new and facile strategy for inducing the uniform deposition of Li, paving the way for the practical application of Li-metal anodes in high-energy-density Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:An effective approach is developed to investigate potential complexing agents in Zn-Ni bath by using density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and electrochemical experiments. Pyrophosphate is predicted as the most promising auxiliary complexing agent in introduced DMH based bath compared with other complexing agents owing to its weaker adsorption capacity. The DFT calculations show that the most possible and stable structures for zinc (II) and nickel (II) in the electrolyte are the complexes that with one pyrophosphate and two 5-5'-diethylhydantoins (DMH) as the complexing agents. The electrodeposition mechanism of Zn-Ni alloys in selected DMH-pyrophosphate electrolyte was studied by electrochemical measurements. The effects of Zn content, Ni content and bath temperature in the bath on CV curves were also investigated. The rate controlling rate is determined based on Koutecky-Levich equation and a mixed controlled process is observed. The nucleation mechanism of Zn-Ni alloys is a 3D instantaneous nucleation and the bath temperature has no effect on the nucleation of Zn-Ni alloys. The combined theoretical and experimental tests indicate that pyrophosphate is an excellent auxiliary complexing agent in DMH-based Zn-Ni bath and can also provide an efficient method to study or design complexing agents for other metal electroplating.

Abstract:When Zn-Sn-Ni ternary alloy is electroplated on electrolyte copper foil, the surface properties can be comprehensively improved by using alkaline salt pyrophosphate solution. After the bath composition and processing conditions are optimized, and an appropriate additive is chosen, the SEM images shows the electrocrystalized substance obtained is composed of nano-crystals. Besides, XRD analysis on the deposits of electroplated Zn-Sn-Ni alloy shows Zn in the deposits exist in the form of metal compound, including delta phase Ni3Zn22 as well as gamma Ni5Zn21. This indicates under the pyrophosphate salt the process of nucleation of Zn-Sn-Ni ternary alloy is similar to the process of three-dimensional successive nucleation controlled by diffuseness. All these demonstrate that after the disposal of this study, the corrosion resistance, the heat resistance and the binding intensity of electrolyte copper foil are obviously improved.

Abstract:Li metal anode is the most promising anode for high-energy-density batteries due to its high specific capacity (3860 mAh/g) and highest oxidation potential. However, the high reactivity of Li metal with electrolytes and the resultant formation of Li dendrites restrict its practical applications. To tune the reactivity and Li deposition behavior, Li alloys were widely studied and demonstrated to perform better than Li in Li metal batteries. 1-4 Here, we studied the electrochemical behavior of one solid-solution phase Li alloy. In this work, the phase transition in the Li stripping process and phase separation after Li plating were observed, which can be attributed to the sluggish Li diffusion in the solid-solution phase of the alloy. To unlock the Li stripping capacity without phase transition, we designed a bi-phase Li composite anode by introducing Li + conductive materials. Due to the reduced diffusion length, Li can diffuse into the Li solid-solution phase after plating back on the bi-phase Li composite anode, resulting in uniform Li deposition morphology. Accordingly, the bi-phase Li composite anodes showed much better rate performance than the Li alloy or pristine Li. With these findings, it is expected that the new bi-phase Li composite anodes are a promising direction for long-life, high-power, and high-energy Li metal batteries, including Li-S batteries.
Electroplating Behavior of Zn-Ni Alloys in an Alkaline Electrolyte

Abstract:The electroplating behavior of Zn-Ni alloys in an alkaline electrolyte was investigated using cyclic voltammetry(CV),chronoamperometry(CHR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS) techniques.The results show that a layer of Ni-enriched deposits preferentially formed on A3 steel substrate during the initial electroplating stage of Zn-Ni alloy.The Zn~(2+) ions in the solution inhibited the reduction of Ni~(2+) ions,while Ni~(2+) ions accelerated the reduction reaction of Ni~(2+) ions.The initial deposition process of Zn-Ni alloy follows the mechanism of 2D nucleation/growth under mass transfer control.
Mechanism of Zinc-Nickel Electrodeposition by the Action of Organic Additives

Abstract:The mechanism of three kinds of organic additives including benzalacetone,vanillin and OP-10 on electrodeposition of zinc-nickel alloy in acidic electrolyte was investigated by electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry,AC impedence,and electric potential step.The test results showed that the electrodeposition potential of zinc-nickel alloy shifted negatively in the presence of organic additives.The cathode overpotential of zinc-nickel electrodeposition was the greatest and the delivery of hydrogen was restrained effectively by the joint actions of benzalacetone and OP-10,which were also beneficial for achieving brightness in coatings of zinc-nickel alloy.An inductive current cycle appeared at cyclic voltammogram,indicating to the process of nucleation.The potential difference between the oxidation peak and the reduction peak was up to 0.55 V,which showed that the electrode process was irreversible.The zinc-nickel electrodeposition was controlled by concentration polarization and electrochemical polarization after addition of organic additives.The I2/I2m～t/tm curve of zinc-nickel electrodeposition with organic additives was close to the theoretical instantaneous nucleation curve,which showed that the electrocrystallization of zinc-nickel alloy with organic additives followed the mechanism of instantaneous nucleation with a three-dimensional growth.
Dissolution of Nanoprecipitate on Aluminum-Alloy Anode for High Discharging Performance in Al Battery Applications

Abstract:Use of aluminum alloy anodes as metal fuel in electrochemical batteries has specific advantages in numerous applications. In this paper, we report novel Al alloy anodes obtained by adding In and Bi to a reported Al ternary-element alloy, Al-Zn-Sn. An electron probe microanalyzer is used to obtain the elemental composition of Al-5Zn-0.1Sn, Al-5Z-0.1Sn-0.1In, and Al-5Zn-0.1Sn-0.1In-0.1Bi. Tafel analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and constant-current chronopotentiometry are performed for electrochemical analysis. In addition, the self-corrosion of the alloys is examined to determine the hydrogen evolution and anode discharge stability. These results indicate that Al-5Zn-0.1Sn-0.1In-0.1Bi has the highest anode performance. On the basis of the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy microstructure analysis, we propose that the dissolution and sedimentation process induced by Bi nanoprecipitates may activate a passive Al surface, significantly enhancing the discharge efficiency.

Abstract:Due to an ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g−1, lithium (Li) is regarded as the ultimate anode for high‐energy‐density batteries. However, the practical application of Li metal anode is hindered by safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency both of which are resulted fromunavoidable dendrite growth during electrodeposition. This study focuses on a critical parameter for electrodeposition, the exchange current density, which has attracted only little attention in research on Li metal batteries. A phase‐field model is presented to show the effect of exchange current density on electrodeposition behavior of Li. The results show that a uniform distribution of cathodic current density, hence uniform electrodeposition, on electrode is obtained with lower exchange current density. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that lower exchange current density contributes to form a larger critical radius of nucleation in the initial electrocrystallization that results in a dense deposition of Li, which is a foundation for improved Coulombic efficiency and dendrite‐free morphology. The findings not only pave the way to practical rechargeable Li metal batteries but can also be translated to the design of stable metal anodes, e.g., for sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) batteries.

Abstract:Pure Ni and three Ni–Co alloys films, i.e. Ni–4wt.%Co, Ni–18wt.%Co, and Ni–40wt.%Co, are electrodeposited at room temperature from the choline chloride/ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent dissolved by nickel or/and cobalt chlorides. Electrodeposition mechanism, microstructure, and corrosion properties of the films are investigated. Surface morphology and chemical composite of the films are significantly dependent on the Ni2+ and Co2+ concentrations in the electrolytes. Interestingly, it is found that the amount of cobalt in the Ni–Co alloy films is significantly lower than that present in the electrolytes, which indicates an absence of anomalous codeposition process for the non-aqueous electrolytes. However, anomalous codeposition of Ni–Co deposits is frequently observed for the aqueous electrolytes. The Ni–Co alloy films possess face-centered cubic structures and refined grains revealed by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that the Ni film exhibits the noblest corrosion potential and the lowest corrosion current compared with the Ni–Co alloys films. Moreover, the more Co content the Ni–Co films have, the more negative corrosion potential and the higher corrosion current the films exhibit.

Nevertheless, when confronted with the phase transition process caused by bi-active metals such as NaK liquid alloys, the research process becomes complex and elusive. Herein, we have reduced the intricate issues to relatively simple initial alloying behaviors. Two exchange diffusion mechanisms of the Na atom embedded in K crystals and K atom embedded in Na crystals are investigated by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation and mechanical simulation. As a result, the process of embedding the Na atom in K crystals shows a better thermodynamic stability and lower activation barrier and structural stress than those of the other. The abovementioned conclusions are further proved by stepwise Na and K electrodeposition experiments, and the prepared NaK alloy electrode displays excellent electrochemical performance. The effect of alloy type of lithophilic Cu-Sn interface layer on the deposition/stripping behavior of lithium metal anode

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is one of the best anode candidates for high energy density battery because of the lowest electrode potential and high theoretical capacity. However, the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface will cause uneven Li deposition and induce the formation of Li dendrites. The Cu-Sn alloy interface layer has been proven to be an effective strategy to inhibit the growth of Li dendrites, but how the alloy type of Cu-Sn alloy affects the deposition/exfoliation behavior of Li metal is still unclear. Here, we used a simple and fast chemical plating method to prepared lithophilic Cu3Sn and Cu6Sn5 pure phase interface layers on the surface of the Cu foil by controlling the temperature. Then, the effects of two different alloy types on the deposition/stripping behavior of Li metal anodes were studied. Compared with Cu3, Cu6Sn5@Cu has a more uniform surface structure and higher surface free energy. Uniform electron distribution and fast reaction kinetics are conducive to the uniform deposition of Li metal. Meanwhile, Cu6Sn5@Cu also has higher electrolyte wettability. This helps to reduce the interphase impedance and polarization, thereby avoiding the growth of Li dendrites. These advantages make deposition mechanism of Li metal on the Cu6Sn5@Cu surface a unidirectional "Parallel-Deposition", while on the Cu3 surface it is a multi-directional "Preferred-Deposition". After being modified by Cu6Sn5, a more reasonable deposition mechanism reduces the overpotential of Li deposition on Cu foil by half. Even under the high deposition capacity of 10 mAh cm−2, Cu6Sn5@Cu can still cycle stably for more than 900 h. In addition, Li-Cu6Sn5@Cu has also been proved to have more stable rate performance and higher capacity retention rate than Li-Cu3 when it is used in full cell with LiFePO4.

Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were performed in conjunction with SEM technique to study the electroplating process of Zn–Fe alloys. The technological parameters for Zn–Fe electroplating have been optimized and the smooth Zn–Fe coatings with high corrosion resistances were obtained. The results also show that, under our experimental conditions, the deposition of Zn–Fe behaved anomalously and followed the mechanism of three-dimensional (3D) nucleation. With the increase of deposition potential, the grain growth changed from progressive to instantaneous. Meanwhile, a new viewpoint was proposed to explain the anomalous co-deposition behavior of Zn–Fe coatings.
