Abstract:In recent years, due to its great promise in boosting the energy density of lithium batteries for future energy storage, research on the Li metal anode, as an alternative to the graphite anode in Li‐ion batteries, has gained significant momentum. However, the practical use of Li metal anodes has been plagued by unstable Li (re)deposition and poor cyclability. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to the stabilization of Li metal anodes, the mechanisms of electrochemical (re‐)deposition/dissolution of Li and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation remain elusive. This article highlights the recent mechanistic understandings and observations of Li deposition/dissolution and SEI formation achieved from advanced characterization techniques and simulation methods, and discusses major limitations and open questions in these processes. In particular, the authors provide their perspectives on advanced and emerging/potential methods for obtaining new insights into these questions. In addition, they give an outlook into cutting‐edge interdisciplinary research topics for Li metal anodes. It pushes beyond the current knowledge and is expected to accelerate development toward a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, in order to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward practical application. This perspective article highlights recent developments in understanding of the mechanisms of lithium deposition/dissolution and solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) formation and identifies the major limitations and open questions in these processes. It also provides the authors’ perspectives on advanced characterization and simulation methods to promote a more in‐depth and comprehensive understanding, and to guide future research on Li metal anodes toward applications.

However, challenges such as dendritic Li deposits, leading to internal short‐circuits, and low Coulombic efficiency hinder the widespread adoption of lithium‐metal batteries (LMBs). These issues stem from the morphological instability of Li deposition, influenced by dynamic processes at the electrolyte|Li interface. Understanding the interplay between electrolyte properties, interfacial kinetics, and Li deposition stability is crucial yet challenging due to their simultaneous occurrence and the complexity of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. This review discusses three key dynamic processes influencing Li deposition: desolvation of Li+ ions, transport through the SEI, and electrochemical reduction. The effects of electrolyte properties on these processes and their interplay with electroplating stability are discussed, highlighting contradictions in the literature and proposing explanations for the discrepancies. Despite numerous reviews on SEI structure and composition effects, this article emphasizes the kinetic aspects at interfaces, aiming to provide clarity and direction for future research in achieving stable Li deposition in LMBs.

Abstract:The application of lithium metal as an anode material for next generation high energy‐density batteries has to overcome the major bottleneck that is the seemingly unavoidable growth of Li dendrites caused by non‐uniform electrodeposition on the electrode surface. This problem must be addressed by clarifying the detailed mechanism. In this work the mass‐transfer of Li‐ions is investigated, a key process controlling the electrochemical reaction. By a phase field modeling approach, the Li‐ion concentration and the electric fields are visualized to reveal the role of three key experimental parameters, operating temperature, Li‐salt concentration in electrolyte, and applied current density, on the microstructure of deposited Li. It is shown that a rapid depletion of Li‐ions on electrode surface, induced by, e.g., low operating temperature, diluted electrolyte and a high applied current density, is the underlying driving force for non‐uniform electrodeposition of Li. Thus, a viable route to realize a dendrite‐free Li plating process would be to mitigate the depletion of Li‐ions on the electrode surface. The methodology and results in this work may boost the practical applicability of Li anodes in Li metal batteries and other battery systems using metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation high‐energy‐density rechargeable batteries. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anodes plays a significant role in influencing the Li deposition morphology and the cycle life of LMBs. However, a thorough understanding on the mechanisms of SEI formation and evolution is still inadequate. In this review, the progress in understanding structures, properties, and influencing factors of SEI, as well as efficient strategies of tailoring SEI are focused upon. First, the compositions, models, and recent progress in characterizing atomic structures of SEI are summarized. Second, the properties of SEI, including electronic conduction, ionic conduction, stability, and mechanical properties are elucidated. Structures and properties of SEI are greatly affected by multiple factors, thus interactions between these factors and SEI are systematically discussed. Correlations of SEI with Li deposition morphology, rate capability, and cycle life are further summarized. Moreover, efficient strategies of tailoring SEI with desired properties, including in situ SEI and ex situ SEI, are also reviewed. Finally, future directions, including in‐operando techniques, multi‐modality approaches for characterization of SEI, and artificial intelligence assisted understanding of correlations between electrolyte components and SEI properties are proposed.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has been considered as a promising anode material for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries, but its utilization is impeded by the nonuniform electrodeposition during the charging process which leads to poor cycling life and safety concerns. Thus, understanding the electrodeposition mechanism of Li metal anode is of great importance to develop practical engineering strategies for rechargeable Li metal batteries. The electrodeposition of Li is controlled by both thermodynamic and kinetic factors, such as the solvation free energy of Li ions, the Li nucleation, the surface diffusion of Li atom and the strength of the interaction between Li ion and the electrolyte anion. The scale of the whole process from the Li-ion reduction to the growth of a Li nucleus goes from sub-nanometer up to a few micrometers, which poses an outstanding challenge to both experiments and simulation. In this perspective, we discuss the top-down, the bottom-up and the middle-way approaches to this challenge and the possible synergies between them.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising alternative anode materials of next‐generation high‐energy‐density batteries demanded for advanced energy storage in the coming fourth industrial revolution. Nevertheless, disordered Li deposition easily causes short lifespan and safety concerns and thus severely hinders the practical applications of Li metal batteries. Tremendous efforts are devoted to understanding the mechanism for Li deposition, while the final deposition morphology tightly relies on the Li nucleation and early growth. Here, the recent progress in insightful and influential models proposed to understand the process of Li deposition from nucleation to early growth, including the heterogeneous model, surface diffusion model, crystallography model, space charge model, and Li‐SEI model, are highlighted. Inspired by the abovementioned understanding on Li nucleation and early growth, diverse anode‐design strategies, which contribute to better batteries with superior electrochemical performance and dendrite‐free deposition behavior, are also summarized. This work broadens the horizon for practical Li metal batteries and also sheds light on more understanding of other important metal‐based batteries involving the metal deposition process.

Abstract:Li metal could be the ideal anode for rechargeable battery technologies, due to its negative redox potential (ca. -3 V vs. SHE), high specific capacity (3860 mAh g −1 ), and low density (0.534 g cm −3 ) [1-3]. Recent advances show a new design concept where there are no initial active materials in the anode (no carbon, Si, or Li metal) and the corresponding Li quantity is directly deposited on the current collector during charging. This approach will result in important practical advantages such as enhanced volumetric and gravimetric specific energies, ease of manufacturing and reduced complexity/safety concerns of the recycling process (ideally Li is completely removed in the discharged state). However, the applicability of the Li-metal batteries is constrained by the nonuniform lithium deposition, accompanied by dendrite growth and the formation of dead lithium during long-term cycling, which lead to low Coulombic efficiency and even cell failure [2]. The initial structure and morphology of the Li deposit has a vital influence on the later progression of the Li layer [4]. This underpins the importance of a fundamental understanding of the electrodeposition process. However, the presence of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) makes such investigations difficult, since after the transport of the Li ions through the SEI, a subsequent charge transfer and nucleation growth process at the substrate-SEI interface, instead of substrate-liquid electrolyte interface occurs. This contribution will discuss lithium electrodeposition in a sulfolane based, localized high concentrated electrolyte system. Possible phase formation mechanisms as well as kinetic and thermodynamic aspects during the initial stages of the process are studied by classical electrochemical methods (Fig. 1, left). Furthermore, the mass-charge balance during deposition and stripping was monitored (Fig. 1, right) via in-situ microgravimetry (electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance). Abstract:Due to an ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g−1, lithium (Li) is regarded as the ultimate anode for high‐energy‐density batteries. However, the practical application of Li metal anode is hindered by safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency both of which are resulted fromunavoidable dendrite growth during electrodeposition. This study focuses on a critical parameter for electrodeposition, the exchange current density, which has attracted only little attention in research on Li metal batteries. A phase‐field model is presented to show the effect of exchange current density on electrodeposition behavior of Li. The results show that a uniform distribution of cathodic current density, hence uniform electrodeposition, on electrode is obtained with lower exchange current density. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that lower exchange current density contributes to form a larger critical radius of nucleation in the initial electrocrystallization that results in a dense deposition of Li, which is a foundation for improved Coulombic efficiency and dendrite‐free morphology. The findings not only pave the way to practical rechargeable Li metal batteries but can also be translated to the design of stable metal anodes, e.g., for sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) batteries.

Abstract:To understand the Li deposition process, both the electron transfer and ion transport processes are unified with a single descriptor: the Damköhler number (Da). Molecular dynamic simulations show that Da promotes uniform Li deposition. Experimentally, a polymer coating is developed to lower the Da at the interface and a positive correlation is found between low Da and uniform Li morphology. Electrochemical cells that utilize metals (e.g., lithium, sodium, zinc) as anodes are under intense investigation as they are projected to replace the current lithium‐ion batteries to serve as a more energy‐dense option for commercial applications. In addition, metal electrodes provide opportunities for fundamental research of different phenomena, such as ion transport and electrochemical kinetics, in the complex environment of reactive metal‐electrodeposition. In this work, computationally and experimentally the competing effects related to transport and kinetics during the metal electrodeposition process are examined. Using Brownian dynamics simulations, it is shown that slower deposition kinetics results in a more compact and uniform Li morphology. This finding is experimentally implemented by designing ion‐containing polymeric coatings on the electrodes that simultaneously provide pathways for lithium‐ion transport, while impeding the charge transfer (Li+ + e− → Li) at heterogeneous surfaces. It is further shown that these ionic polymer interfaces can significantly extend the cell‐lifetime of a lithium metal battery in both ether‐based and carbonate‐based electrolytes. Through theoretical and experimental investigations, it is found that a low kinetic to transport rate ratio is a major factor in influencing the Li plating morphology. The plating morphology can be further fine‐tuned by increasing ionic conductivity.

Abstract:Structured carbon-based hosts for the Li anode both improve the transport of Li-ions and reduce the electron transfer rate and have proven to be an effective way to suppress dendrite growth in lithium metal anodes. An in-depth understanding of these effects is needed to clarify the intrinsic electrochemical mechanism involved. We used the finite element method to simulate the two crucial processes controlling Li-ion behavior, electron transfer and Li-ion transport, and visualized the local deposition rate, the overpotential, and the Li-ion concentration in a three-dimensional (3D) Li//electrolyte//Li cell. Our analysis showed a competitive relationship between the rates of Li-ion transport and electron transfer. When the electron transfer rate is relatively slow, there are sufficient Li-ions available near the anode surface and the deposition behavior is controlled by electron transfer. However, when the number of Li-ions is low, Li-ion transport dominates the deposition process because it is unable to keep up with electron transfer, and this causes dendrite formation. Therefore, reducing the reactivity of the Li anode and accelerating Li-ion transport are the two key factors to produce uniform Li metal deposition on the anode, particularly under fast charging conditions and in practical use.

Abstract:As one of the most promising electrode materials, lithium metal has excellent performance with its ultrahigh theoretic specific capacity (3860 mAh/g) and the lowest potential (-3.04 V versus standard hydrogen electrode). Nevertheless, the practical application of lithium metal batteries is hindered by the low coulombic efficiency and safety issues, which originate from the uneven Li deposition/dissolution process and the continuous growth of lithium dendrites. The composition, structure, and morphology of the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) are key factors in regulating the lithium deposition behavior and suppressing dendrite growth. In this review, the failure mechanism of the lithium metal anode and structural and compositional properties of ideal and practical SEIs are briefly summarized, including models describing the ion transfer process and the evolution of uneven lithium deposition at the interface. There are three main strategies to obtain a high-performance lithium metal anode from the perspective of regulating the electrolyte/electrode interface. They are (i) liquid electrolyte regulation, (ii) solid electrolyte application and separator modification, and (iii) electrode interface coating and composite anode. Lastly, the remaining challenges to be further solved and possible directions for future development are discussed.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal battery is regarded as a high-energy-density battery system beyond Li-ion battery. However, the cycle life of Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is severely hindered by the high reactivity and non-uniform plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes. The plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes are mainly dictated by the transport mechanism of Li ions in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a nanoscale passivation film between the anode and electrolytes. SEI is composed of various inorganic and organic components and has a diversiform structure, which complicates the transport behaviors of Li ions in it and differentiates the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI from that in common liquid and solid electrolytes. Therefore, understanding the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI is imperative for rationally regulating SEI components and structure and enabling uniform Li plating/stripping behaviors. In this review, the recent progress in understanding the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI in Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is summarized, including the detailed transport mechanisms of Li ions in SEI, and the methods to investigate and regulate the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI. In particular, an insightful outlook is provided to guide future research on investigating the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI.
Understanding and Modifying Strategies for Lithium Metal Anode Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Abstract:The lithium metal anode (LMA) is considered the most promising anode material due to its high specific capacity and low electrode potential.The energy density is doubled by replacing the graphite anode in a lithium-ion battery with LMA. However, the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and dendrite growth of LMA limit the practical applications of lithium metal batteries. A well-formed SEI can effectively passivate the lithium metal surface, preventing further reactions between LMA and electrolyte. However, the mechanical stability of the SEI formed in a general electrolyte is poor. The SEI ruptures due to the violent expansion and contraction of the LMA, resulting in continuous electrolyte consumption. Meanwhile, the inhomogeneous deposition of lithium metal can cause severe dendrite growth. Lithium dendrites have a high specific surface area, which increases active lithium and electrolyte consumption. Once the lithium dendrites pierce the separator, safety issues arise. Furthermore, the inhomogeneous stripping behavior of lithium metal can cause partially active lithium to lose its conductive connection with the substrate, resulting in a loss of reversible capacity. This results in lower coulombic efficiency and shorter cycle life for LMA. During the platting/stripping process, lithium ions first pass through the SEI. Therefore, the composition and structural distribution of the SEI have a decisive effect on the deposition/dissolution behavior of lithium. Understanding the composition and structure of SEI is crucial for solving the historical challenges of LMA. In recent years, researchers have made significant progress towords understanding SEI through advanced characterization and analysis tools, such as cryo-electron microscopy, titration gas chromatography, atomic force microscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. However, the conventional experimental methods developed so far have considerable spatial and temporal resolution limitations. It is difficult to understand the interfacial reaction mechanism and the effect of interfacial composition on ion transport using a single experimental method. A combination of experiments and theoretical calculations, such as density functional theory, can simulate the interfacial reaction and help understand the mechanism of interface formation. Molecular dynamics simulation can be used to predict the interfacial lithium-ion transport paths. The experimental process can be simplified using machine learning to screen the experimental design. In the future, the close integration of theoretical calculations and experiments will be a major driving force for developing high energy density lithium metal batteries. This review summarizes the characterization techniques and regulation strategies of SEI, such as electrolyte optimization design, artificial SEI, and current collector design. Among them, we focused on the electrolyte composition design, the most direct and efficient means. By changing the composition and ratio of the electrolyte, the interfacial reaction process can be directly affected to form a stable SEI, which inhibits the continuous consumption of active lithium and the growth of dendrites. Simultaneously, we introduced the current state of interphase research in lithium metal pouch cells. This review has a certain guiding significance for LMA toward practical applications.
Morphology evolution of electrodeposited lithium on metal substrates

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is deemed to be the high-energy-density anode material for next generation batteries, but its practical application is impeded by the uneven electrodeposition during charge of battery, which leads to the low Coulombic efficiency and potential safety issue. Here, multiscale modeling is fabricated to understand the morphology evolution of Li during electrodeposition process, from the self-diffusion of Li adatoms on electrode surface, to the nucleation process, and to the formation of Li microstructures, revealing the correlation between final morphology and deposition substrates. Energy batteries and self-diffusion of Li adatom on various substrates (lithium, copper, nickel, magnesium, and silver) result in the different nucleation size, which is calculated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation based on classical nucleation theory. Formation of Li substructures that are grown from Li nuclei, is revealed by phase field modeling coupled with cellular automaton method. Our results show that larger Li nuclei is obtained under faster self-diffusion of Li adatom, leading to the low aspect ratio of Li substructures and the subsequent morphology evolution of electrodeposited Li. Furthermore, the electrodeposition of Li is strongly regulated by the selection of substrates, giving the practical guideline of anode design in rechargeable Li metal batteries. It is worthy to mention that this method to investigate the electro-crystallization process involving nucleation and growth can be transplanted to the other metallic anode, such as sodium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, calcium and the like.

Regulating Lithium Nucleation at the Electrolyte/Electrode Interface in Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The lithium dendrite growth is thermodynamically favorable after nucleation, so the early state of lithium nuclei is pivotal for uniform lithium deposition. The review summarizes the significant impact of both electrolyte‐to‐electrode mass transport and electrode interfacial reactions on lithium nucleation behavior, inspired design principles, and strategies for regulating lithium nucleation, and finally discusses the competitive relationships between these strategies. Lithium (Li) metal has emerged as a viable alternative anode material to address the current energy density shortfalls in Li batteries. However, its integration into widespread implementation remains somewhat constrained due to the substandard reversibility issues and safety concerns arising from erratic Li deposition. To effectively tackle these obstacles, considerable endeavors have been exerted to modulate the morphology of Li deposition. Nevertheless, it is exceedingly challenging for Li nuclei that tend to dendritic growth thermodynamically to transform into dense Li morphologies during their growth process. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what influences the formation process of Li nuclei and how to improve the state of Li nuclei. Herein, Li nucleation mechanisms involving mass transport across the solid electrolyte interface from electrolyte to electrode and electrode interfacial reactions are elucidated. Inspired by the understanding of Li nucleation, the corresponding design principles, including enhancing and homogenizing mass transport, stabilizing solid electrolyte interface film, and regulating surface interaction/selection, are summarized for optimizing Li nucleation and further inducing dendrite‐free Li deposition. In light of the competition among these design principles, a perspective on the existing challenges and opportunities for further promoting the application of Li metal batteries is proposed.

Abstract:Structured carbon-based hosts for the Li anode both improve the transport of Li-ions and reduce the electron transfer rate and have proven to be an effective way to suppress dendrite growth in lithium metal anodes.An in-depth understanding of these effects is needed to clarify the intrinsic electrochemical mechanism involved.We used the finite element method to simulate the two crucial processes controlling Li-ion behavior,electron transfer and Li-ion transport,and visualized the local deposition rate,the over-potential,and the Li-ion concentration in a three-dimensional(3D)Li//electrolyte//Li cell.Our analysis showed a competitive rela-tionship between the rates of Li-ion transport and electron transfer.When the electron transfer rate is relatively slow,there are suffi-cient Li-ions available near the anode surface and the deposition behavior is controlled by electron transfer.However,when the num-ber of Li-ions is low,Li-ion transport dominates the deposition process because it is unable to keep up with electron transfer,and this causes dendrite formation.Therefore,reducing the reactivity of the Li anode and accelerating Li-ion transport are the two key factors to produce uniform Li metal deposition on the anode,particularly under fast charging conditions and in practical use.

Abstract:The rapid development of electronic technology and energy industry promotes the increasing desire for energy storage systems with high energy density, thus calling for the exploration of lithium metal anode. However, the enormous challenges, such as uncontrollable lithium deposition, side reaction, infinite volume change and dendrite generation, hinders its application. To address these problems, the deposition behavior of lithium must be exactly controlled and the anode/electrolyte interface must be stabilized. The deposition of lithium is a multi-step process influenced by multi-physical fields, where nucleation is the key to final morphology. Hence, increasing investigations have focused on the employment of lithiophilic materials that can regulate lithium nucleation in recent years. The lithiophilic materials introduced into the deposition hosts or solid electrolyte interphases can regulate the nucleation overpotential and facilitate uniform deposition. However, the concept of lithiophilicity is still undefined and the mechanism is still unrevealed. In this review, the recent advances in the regulation mechanisms of lithiophilicity are discussed, and the applications of lithiophilic materials in hosts and protective interphases are summarized. The in-depth exploration of lithiophilic materials can enhance our understanding of the deposition behavior of lithium and pave the way for practical lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is one of the most promising anode materials but suffers from inhomogeneous Li deposition, which is a limiting factor for the practical application of Li metal batteries. Some metals with high lithiophilicity are extremely recognized for achieving uniform Li deposition, but how these metals work is still unknown. Herein, the role of lithiophilic metals on the Li-plating process is explored on the basis of the experiments and theoretical calculations. The nucleation barrier is significantly reduced, owing to the alloying reaction between metals and Li species. The Li ions are subsequently attracted by the above favorable lithiophilic nucleus and conversed into Li atoms as a result of the high binding energy between the Li species and alloy nuclei. Besides, deposited Li diffuses into the electrode lattice via the channels with a low diffusion barrier. By construction of metal sites as well as the formation of alloy nuclei with high lithiophilicity, a dendrite-free anode can be realized. This study sheds fresh light on the lithiophilic electrochemistry and dendrite inhibition strategies for safe and high-energy-density Li metal batteries.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Shallow lakes respond in different ways to changes in nutrient loading (nitrogen, phosphorus). These lakes may be in two different states: turbid, dominated by phytoplankton, and clear, dominated by submerged macrophytes. Both states are self-stabilizing; a shift from turbid to clear occurs at much lower nutrient loading than a shift in the opposite direction. These critical loading levels vary among lakes and are dependent on morphological, biological, and lake management factors. This paper focuses on the role of wetland zones. Several processes are important: transport and settling of suspended solids, denitrification, nutrient uptake by marsh vegetation (increasing nutrient retention), and improvement of habitat conditions for predatory fish. A conceptual model of a lake with surrounding reed marsh was made, including these relations. The lake-part of this model consists of an existing lake model named PCLake[1]. The relative area of lake and marsh can be varied. Model calculations revealed that nutrient concentrations are lowered by the presence of a marsh area, and that the critical loading level for a shift to clear water is increased. This happens only if the mixing rate of the lake and marsh water is adequate. In general, the relative marsh area should be quite large in order to have a substantial effect. Export of nutrients can be enhanced by harvesting of reed vegetation. Optimal predatory fish stock contributes to water quality improvement, but only if combined with favourable loading and physical conditions. Within limits, the presence of a wetland zone around lakes may thus increase the ability of lakes to cope with nutrients and enhance restoration. Validation of the conclusions in real lakes is recommended, a task hampered by the fact that, in the Netherlands, many wetland zones have disappeared in the past.

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries with high energy/power densities have significant applications in electronics, electric vehicles, and stationary power plants. However, the unstable lithium-metal-anode/electrolyte interface has induced insufficient cycle life and safety issues. To improve the cycle life and safety, understanding the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and growth of lithium dendrites near the anode/electrolyte interface, regulating the electrodeposition/electrostripping processes of Li+, and developing multiple approaches for protecting the lithium-metal surface and SEI layer are crucial and necessary. This paper comprehensively reviews the research progress in SEI and lithium dendrite growth in terms of their classical electrochemical lithium plating/stripping processes, interface interaction/nucleation processes, anode geometric evolution, fundamental electrolyte reduction mechanisms, and effects on battery performance. Some important aspects, such as charge transfer, the local current distribution, solvation, desolvation, ion diffusion through the interface, inhibition of dendrites by the SEI, additives, models for dendrite formation, heterogeneous nucleation, asymmetric processes during stripping/plating, the host matrix, and in situ nucleation characterization, are also analyzed based on experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Several technical challenges in improving SEI properties and reducing lithium dendrite growth are analyzed. Furthermore, possible future research directions for overcoming the challenges are also proposed to facilitate further research and development toward practical applications.Graphical Abstract
