Abstract:A novel ceramic nanofiber membrane (CNM), without an intermediate layer, was successfully developed onto the surface of a mullite fiber-based porous ceramic support using a sacrificial layer-assisted multiple dip-coating method. The CNM based on attapulgite exhibited a remarkable permeability of 1602.6L/(m2·h·bar), over 24 times higher than the ceramic nanofiber membrane with a support made from alumina granular particles. Moreover, a catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (Mn@CNM) was fabricated via an impregnation method. The Mn@CNM coupled catalytic ozonation process achieved a removal efficiency of up to 90.3% for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to evaluate the production of different reactive oxygen species during the catalytic ozonation of SMX. The superior performance of Mn@CNM was ascribed to the high porosity and specific surface area of the CNM support, as well as the presence of a separation layer composed of interwoven APT nanofibers. These components created nano-sized pore structures, that enhanced the nano-confinement effect and improved the interaction between ROS and SMX molecules. In addition, the excellent redox cycles of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) facilitated the generation of ROS and degradation of SMX in catalytic ozonation systems. This study presents a novel method for creating CNM with excellent permeability and Mn@CNM with superior catalytic performance, enabling efficient removal of emerging contaminants from water.

Abstract:A novel tubular braid reinforced (TBR) PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane for application in dynamic catalysis was introduced in this study. The preparation method of the TBR PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane was facile and efficient. The TBR PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties were evaluated by a universal material testing machine. The tensile strength of TBR nanofiber membrane exceeded 500 MPa, whereas that of the nanofiber membrane without reinforcement was merely 10 MPa. Besides, the compressive strength of the TBR nanofiber membrane was also reinforced, which indicated that the TBR nanofiber membrane could withstand a higher operating pressure. The reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP was selected as the model reaction to evaluate the catalytic property of TBR PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane. The apparent rate constant of dynamic catalysis was 34.58 times higher than that of static catalysis. After 10 cycles, the conversion of 4-NP was still higher than 95.3%. This indicated that the TBR PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane had superior stability and recyclability. Besides, the TBR PMIA/CA-PEI/Ag nanofiber membrane also showed superior catalytic performance when it was used for catalyzing other environmental pollutants.

Abstract:We developed a facile approach to synthesize thin-film nano-templated composite (TFNt) nanofiltration membrane with high water permeability, high NaCl/MgSO4 selectivity and strong antimicrobial properties. A polydopamine (PDA) coating on a polysulfone support was used as a nano-template to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ with high loading and high uniformity. A subsequent interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride was performed on this nano-template substrate to form the TFNt membrane. The TFNt membrane had significantly increased both the water permeability and salt rejection compared to the control thin-film composite (TFC) membrane as well as a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane prepared by the conventional way of loading AgNPs directly during the interfacial polymerization process. Furthermore, the TFNt membrane showed better antimicrobial properties than both the TFC and the conventional TFN membranes. The current work presents an exciting approach to fabricate novel nanofiltration membranes using nano-templates, which provides important insights for high performance NF membrane synthesis.
In situ confined encapsulation of ultrafine Fe2O3 nanoclusters in N/S co-doped graphene-based membranes for continuous chemical conversion

Abstract:Membranes with catalytic function can provide an effective approach for simultaneously transforming reactants to industrial chemicals and separation. However, rational design of stable and high-quality catalytic membranes with controlled structure remains a big challenge. We report a strategy for in situ confined encapsulation of ultrafine Fe2O3 nanoclusters in nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene-based membranes for continuous chemical conversion. By manipulation of the active ferric catalytic center and surrounding coordination atoms in doped rGO nanosheets, multiple coordination structures were provided to achieve improved catalytic properties. Angstrom-level confined interlayer structure (∼8 Å) was constructed by external pressurization of Fe/NS-rGO nanosheets on membrane substrate, and the adsorption energy of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) molecule between Fe/NS-rGO layers was much stronger than that in traditional nanometer-level confined space due to extra interactions, achieving the catalytic efficiency with a high Turnover Frequency (TOF) value (1596.0 h-1). The prepared ultrathin Fe/NS-rGO catalytic membrane also exhibited excellent water flux and rejection rate for small dye molecules, as well as long-term separation activity toward naphthol green B (NgB) for at least 130 h. The progress offers a viable route to the rational design of high-quality catalytic membranes with tailored structures and properties for wide applications.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is one of the best semiconductor photocatalysts available for photocatalysis. In this paper, titanium dioxide nanofiber membranes are prepared by post-anneal-assisted electrospinning process. The obtained membrane is composed of anatase titanium dioxide continuous and porous nanofibers with diameters ranging from 65 to 115 run. An optimized annealing scheme is determined. Photocatalytic measurements show that the photocatalytic efficiency of the anatase TiO2 nanofiber membrane is 72%, which is highly superior to that of the anatase TiO2 thin film (44%). It is believed that the large specific surface area intensively enhances the photocatalytic reactions and the good shape retention might be favorable for recuperability and practicality. The potential applications for environmental purification are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes used for gas separation have attracted considerable attention recently. Although there are studies focusing on their continuous growth on inorganic substrates, MOF–polymer membranes are in demand because of their low cost, high processing ability and large membrane area. To achieve this purpose, the flexibility of the polymer must be reduced and the MOF-to-substrate adhesion strength should be greatly enhanced. Herein, a continuous and well inter-grown Cu3(BTC)2–PAN composite membrane has been successfully fabricated by directly growing via a covalent linker. Dehydrogenation, cyclization and crosslinking reactions of the PAN hollow fiber by solvothermal treatment can greatly improve the stiffness and compression strength of the composite membrane. To increase the adhesion strength effectively, a covalent linker between the MOF layer and PAN substrate is provided by chemical modification. The prepared membrane achieves a high H2 permeance of 7.05 × 10−5 mol (m−2 s−1 Pa−1) and a good separation factor of 7.14 for binary H2–CO2 mixtures with high thermal and pressure stability. Our strategy has also been developed for preparing a continuous and well inter-grown ZIF-8–PAN membrane. A very thin ZIF-8 layer is finally synthesized due to the large number of nucleation sites on the substrate. All of these distinguished properties suggest that MOF–PAN composite membranes fabricated by chemical modification are promising candidates for gas separation.

Abstract:An Ag@PAN catalytic nanofiber composite membrane has been fabricated by combining electrospinning PAN nanofiber seeding with 2-MI and flowing synthesis. ZIF-8 can be immobilized on the surface of the nanofibers with Zn(NO3)2 solution flowing through the 2-MI/PAN nanofiber membrane and Ag nanoparticles can be immobilized on the nanofibers with Zn2+ in ZIF-8 exchanged by Ag+ followed with reduction reaction. The characteristics of XRD, XPS, FTIR, TGA, HRTEM, and BET proved the successful immobilization of Ag nanoparticles derived from ZIF-8 on PAN nanofiber. The permeance of the Ag@PAN catalytic nanofiber composite membrane can reach 19,227 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 with Ag nanoparticles immobilization amount of 49.64%. The p-NP conversion reaction is addressed for the catalytic performance of the Ag@PAN catalytic nanofiber composite membrane. The conversion rate of 99% can be achieved under the condition of p-NP concentration of 0.025 mM and membrane flux of 300 L m−2 h−1. The apparent reaction rate constant of 236.63 min−1 can be achieved by flowing through mode, which is 4-5 orders of magnitude higher than that in a stirred tank reactor with Ag powders as the catalyst. The catalytic performance of the composite membranes has not declined significantly after ten cycles of the catalysis experiment, implied the good repeatability of the Ag@PAN catalytic nanofiber composite membranes.

Abstract:Efficiency and sustainability of catalytic thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes are crucially important for the reverse-osmosis performance of thin film composite (TFC) membranes in many fields. Herein, 2 catalytic nanoparticles were fabricated and incorporated into the polyamide active layer through by covalent bond via the interfacial polymerization (IP) method. Polyamide TFN membranes with high efficiency, sustainable catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), and excellent self-cleaning performance were prepared conveniently. The 0.8 wt % 2 composite membrane has excellent permeability stability, and the flux recovery rate can reach 81.6% after 7 runs. In addition, the degradation rate of RhB can reach 99.6% by using this membrane. More importantly, the degradation efficiency of 250 mL RhB solution can still reach 94.5% after 7 cycles of catalytic test. The degradation effect of RhB by the TFN membranes was enhanced significantly owing to the synergistic effect of the adsorption and catalytic properties of 2 nanoparticles. Moreover, it provides a universal method for preparing TFN membrane with a catalytic active layer, which can be applied in other fields of catalytic film by replacing Ag NPs with other particles.

Abstract:Magnetic nanofibrous composite membranes were electrospun from the mixtures of poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (PANCAA) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the composite membranes. TGA results indicate that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles catalyzes the carbonization of PANCAA as well as dramatically increases the carbonization temperature. The intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was measured by the color reaction of phenol/4-amino antipyrine in the presence of H2O2. Under optimal conditions, the electrospun composite membranes show high peroxidase-like catalytic activity and reusability. Taking into account of the potentiality for separation, these as-prepared magnetic nanofibrous composite membranes will be applied in phenolic wastewater treatment.
Facile and sustainable fabrication of carbon membranes through mechanical rubbing for efficient nanofiltration

Abstract:Although having shown great promise in gas separation, reverse osmosis , and nanofiltration, preparation of carbon membranes, which commonly involves elaborate high-temperature pyrolysis or exfoliation-reassembly, still suffers from complicated fabrication procedure and/or high production cost. In this study, we pioneered the preparation of continuous asymmetric carbon membrane through facile mechanical rubbing of a pencil graphite. Among them, 2B-type pencil with 64 wt% graphite exhibited superior nanofiltration performance (Congo Red rejection rate of 99.4% and water flux of 21.91 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ). Long-time operation confirmed its excellent stability. Of particular note, the spent membrane could be facilely recovered by erasing, resulting in not only zero pollutant discharge but also full recovery and reutilization of the substrate. The above protocol is anticipated to pave an avenue for facile and sustainable production of versatile carbon membranes with superior separation performances.

Abstract:An efficient and reusable catalyst was developed by depositing palladium nanoparticles on an amine-functionalized ceramic membrane support using a nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method. The as-prepared Pdloaded ceramic membrane support was characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, ICP, and its catalytic properties were investigated in the liquid-phase p-nitrophenol hydrogenation. A comparative study was also made with the palladium nanoparticles deposited on an amine-functionalized ceramic membrane support by an impregnation-reduction method. The palladium nanoparticles could be homogeneously immobilized on the ceramic membrane support surface, and exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the p-nitrophenol hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the Pdloaded ceramic membrane support prepared by the nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method increased by 16.6% compared to that of impregnation-reduction method. In the nanoparticulate colloidal impregnation method, palladium nanoparticles were presynthesized, higher loading of Pd(0) could be obtained, resulting in better catalytic activity. The as-prepared Pd-loaded ceramic membrane support could be easily reused for several cycles without appreciable degradation of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and membrane filtration can efficiently and rapidly remove organic pollutants. Herein, cobalt-ferrite-doped graphitic carbon nitride (CoFe2O4@g-C3N4) nanoconfined catalytic membranes were fabricated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient water purification with the rapid degradation of pollutants. The catalytic membrane was highly efficient in degradation of various pollutants including pharmaceuticals, dye and phenol and achieved a 100% removal efficiency of the model pollutant ranitidine (5 mg/L) within a retention time of 54.6 ms. The CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system achieved a degradation first-order rate constant of 0.088 ms-1 (5280 min-1), which is 104106 times higher than traditional AOP systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and quenching experiments indicated that hydroxyl and singlet oxygen species were the main contributors to pollutant degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that charge was transferred from g-C3N4 (0.247 e) to CoFe2O4 and then from CoFe2O4 (1.611 e) to PMS (-1.858 e) in the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4/PMS system with its free energy of -5.64 eV, which indicated that the PMS dissociation on the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 heterojunction was spontaneous. The ≡Fe(II)/≡Co(III) redox cycle and the promotion of heterojunction on electron transfer induced high stability (42 h) and efficient catalytic capacity for the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system. The as-obtained CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane expands a new pathway for membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis and also provides a promising scheme for water treatment.

Palladium-Zeolite nanofiber as an effective recyclable catalyst membrane for water treatment

Abstract:Zeolite is an exciting natural material due to its unique capability of ammonium nitrogen (NH3N) adsorption in water. In this study, multifunctional hybrid composites of zeolite/palladium (Ze/Pd) on polymer nanofiber membranes were fabricated and explored for sustainable contaminant removal. SEM and XRD demonstrated that zeolite and palladium nanoparticles were uniformly distributed and deposited on the nanofibers. NH3N recovery rate was increased from 23 to 92% when palladium coated zeolite was embedded on the nanofiber. Multifunctional nanofibers of Ze/Pd membranes were able to adsorb NH3N on the zeolites placed on the surface of fibers and palladium catalysts were capable of selective oxidation of NH3N to N2 gas. The cycling of NH3N adsorption-oxidation, high flux, hydrophilicity, and flexibility of the membrane makes it a strong candidate for water treatment.

Abstract:Developing a novel nanocomposite membrane with reaction and separation integrated into one unit to catalyze CO2 cycloaddition is an alternative but challenging solution for mitigating current CO2 excess emissions. In this context, a series of supported ionic liquid membranes were prepared on modified alumina supports with intrinsic nanopores by thermally induced phase transition method, and ILs infiltrate the nanochannels and wet the top layer where liquid crystals grow into highly distributed thin layers of catalytic sites. Additionally, the morphology, thickness, and ingredient of the membrane layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and a membrane reactor with the concept of forced flow-through was constructed to catalyze the CO2 and PO reactions. Under the optimized conditions, the PO conversion rate was stable at about 82.75%, and the maximum STY could reach 38.28 mmol PC·g·cat–1·h–1 using the [HDBU] Cl membrane.

Abstract:The catalytic membrane reactor (CMR) is recognized as one of the most effective strategies to treat the organic wastewater system. Yet so far, inefficiency, lack of bactericidal ability, and serious membrane fouling have limited its further application. In this study, we designed a novel polyacrylonitrile (PAN) catalytic separation membrane loaded with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via a facile photopolymerization method. The Au NPs on the catalytic separation membrane (PAN-Au) surface can serve as a high-performance catalyst, and the ligand of the 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) acts as an efficient protecting ligand for Au NPs to avoid leakage and agglomeration. The PAN-Au membrane was applied to CMR, which can one-step catalytic separation of nitrophenols and methylene blue efficiently in a flow-through mode (up to 97.5% over multiple cycles of reuse). Even after contamination with organic dyes, the PAN-Au membrane can still recover the catalytic separation performance by self-cleaning. Moreover, a remarkable antibacterial (with an efficiency of ≈100%) activity of the PAN-Au membrane, with a strong correlation with the small-sized and well-distributed Au NPs loaded on the membrane surface. The tremendous catalytical, self-cleaning, and antibacterial performance of the PAN-Au membrane provides new insights for the rational design of flow CMR for industrial applications.

Abstract:With the development of the nano-fabrication and nanofluidics, nanoporous membranes have shown great potential in applications such as molecular separation, energy conversion, and molecular sensing. However, their performance has often been limited by the trade-off between selectivity and permeability and the lack of scalability. The prospect of overcoming these problems with nanoporous polymer ion-track membranes is promising. Focusing on these membranes, this review provides a comprehensive overview of fabrication methods, including the traditional track-etching technique and the recently developed track-UV technique; characterization methods; transport mechanisms; and major properties and applications.
Fabrication of Composite Nanofiltration Membranes by Dopamine-Assisted Poly(ethylene Imine) Deposition and Cross-Linking

Abstract:Positively charged composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes with good stability were prepared by dopamine (DA) assisted poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) deposition on a polysulfone ultrafiltration (UF) substrate followed by a cross-linking step. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, and atom force microscopy were employed to characterize the surface chemistry and morphology of the obtained composite membranes. The DA and PEI co-deposition conditions were optimized based on knowledge of the co-deposition mechanism. The effects of the cross-linker concentration, cross-linking time, and reaction temperature on the permeation and separation properties of the prepared composite membranes were investigated in detail. Under optimized conditions, the MgCl2 rejection and permeation flux of the composite membrane reached 80.4% and 19.6 L/(m2·h), respectively (the feed was 0.01 mol/L of MgCl2 solution under a test pressure of 0.4 MPa). The rejection of various salts followed the order MgCl2≈CaCl2>MgSO4>NaCl>Na2SO4, suggesting the membranes were positively charged. The composite membranes showed good durability under alkaline aqueous conditions. This study provided new insights into the fabrication of mussel-inspired thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes.

Abstract:We describe the fabrication, characterization, and applications of ultrathin, free-standing mesoporous metal membranes uniformly decorated with catalytically active nanoparticles. Platinum-plated nanoporous gold leaf (Pt-NPG) made by confining a plating reaction to occur within the pores of dealloyed silver/gold leaf is 100 nm thick and contains an extremely high, uniform dispersion of 3 nm diameter catalytic particles. This nanostructured composite holds promise as a prototypical member of a new class of fuel cell electrodes, showing good electrocatalytic performance at low platinum loading (less than 0.05 mg cm-2), while also maintaining long-term stability against coarsening and aggregation of catalytic nanoparticles.
