Abstract:As a interdisciplinary field of research,social cognitive neuroscience integrates social psychology and cognitive neuroscience,which aims at understanding phenomena in terms of interactions between 3 levels of analysis:the social level,cognitive level and neural level and focusing on traditional social psychological phenomena such as stereotyping,attitude and attitude change,person perception,self-knowledge and interaction between affect and cognition.By applying cognitive neuroscience approach to verifying various theories of social psychology, current researches have got advances in some areas but their leaves other areas to explore.Future work will combine the researches of unification and dissection,Bottom-Up and Top-Down,which will surely contribute to the establishing of integrative research paradigm.

Abstract:Urie Bronfenbrenner is almost certainly best known for his theoretical writings about the ecology of human development. His interest in theory was not, however, separate from his practical concerns, particularly those related to early education and care of children and the families and teachers who interact with them. From the role that he played in the development of Head Start in the United States to his final publications, we show that his theory, as it developed over the course of three phases, was both influenced by and an influencer of his practical concerns.

Abstract:This wide-ranging collection demonstrates the continuing impact of evolutionary thinking on social psychology research. This perspective is explored in the larger context of social psychology, which is divisible into several major areas including social cognition, the self, attitudes and attitude change, interpersonal processes, mating and relationships, violence and aggression, health and psychological adjustment, and individual differences. Within these domains, chapters offer evolutionary insights into salient topics such as social identity, prosocial behavior, conformity, feminism, cyberpsychology, and war. Together, these authors make a rigorous argument for the further integration of the two diverse and sometimes conflicting disciplines. Among the topics covered: How social psychology can be more cognitive without being less social. How the self-esteem system functions to resolve important interpersonal dilemmas. Shared interests of social psychology and cultural evolution. The evolution of stereotypes. An adaptive socio-ecological perspective on social competition and bullying. Evolutionary game theory and personality. Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology has much to offer students and faculty in both fields as well as evolutionary scientists outside of psychology. This volume can be used as a primary text in graduate courses and as a supplementary text in various upper-level undergraduate courses.

Abstract:The history of research on childhood socialization in the context of the family is traced through the present century. The 2 major early theories—behaviorism and psychoanalytic theory—are described. These theories declined in mid-century, under the impact of failures to find empirical support. Simple reinforcement theory was seriously weakened by work on developmental psycholinguistics, attachment, modeling, and altruism. The field turned to more domain-specific minitheories. The advent of microanalytic analyses of parent–child interaction focused attention on bidirectional processes. Views about the nature of identification and its role in socialization underwent profound change. The role of “parent as teacher” was reconceptualized (with strong influence from Vygotskian thinking). There has been increasing emphasis on the role of emotions and mutual cognitions in establishing the meaning of parent–child exchanges. The enormous asymmetry in power and competence between adults and children implies that the parent–child relationship must have a unique role in childhood socialization.

Abstract:Recent trends in social psychology point to increased interest in extending current theories by better incorporating the body (e.g., embodied cognition) and the broader interpersonal context (e.g., situations). However, despite being a critical component in early social theorizing, the physical environment remains in large part underdeveloped in most research programs. In this article, I outline an ecological framework for understanding the person–environment relationship. After introducing this perspective, I describe how this approach helps reveal the critical role played by the physical environment in a variety of social processes, including childhood development, interpersonal relationships, and social identity. Finally, I review a topic in environmental psychology that has received little attention among social psychologists: territories. I provide an ecological perspective on how the design, use, and personalization of this type of environment guide and constrain regulatory processes involving social behavior, identity expression, and emotional experience.

Abstract:The present study examined the thematic composition and temporal evolution of social psychology through a co-citation network analysis of 80,350 articles published from 1970 through 2022. Six primary thematic clusters were identified: a broad "Classic Social Psychology" cluster most prominent in the 1970s and 1980s; "Traits & Affect" and "Social Cognition" clusters most influential in the 1990s; and "The Self," "Intergroup Relations," and "Big Five" clusters emerging after 2000. A small seventh cluster dedicated to COVID-19 and conspiracy theories emerged around 2021. These trends fit a narrative of generational shifts within distinct social and personality psychology traditions.

Abstract:Reviews the book, Handbook of Social Psychology vol. 1 & vol. 2, edited by G. Lindzey . A handbook in any field of knowledge is an ambitions undertaking. When that field is growing so rapidly that changes of major significance take place between the writing of a manuscript and its publication and when the field ramifies widely with ill-defined boundaries, the task is even more formidable. In this perspective the two volumes edited by Lindzey are a magnificent achievement. They replace all existing texts and sourcebooks or any combination of text and sourcebook. They present clear and incisive accounts of the major theoretical positions in social psychology and they give good coverage to the thinking and research on all the traditional topics in the field. Many of these topics are old chapter headings in social psychology (humor and laughter, facial expression, mass phenomena) which more recent texts have omitted. And there is an excellent section of nine chapters on research methods. Moreover, many of the chapters are more than reviews of the literature in their insightful integration or in their suggestions for future research. Though social psychology has been characterized by sectarian trends and an impatience with an historical understanding of its problems, the "Handbook of Social Psychology" should help to counteract these forces. Some of the chapters are still too selective but the over-all pattern is one of real progress. High editorial standards have been maintained and the writing is not only clear, but for a handbook, unusually interesting. Almost any adequate organization of chapters in this field would have problems in finding mutually exclusive areas but the amount of overlapping in the literature reported by the various authors is not great.

Abstract:Our new book, " What Makes Us Social? " (Frith & Frith, Citation 2023 published open access), started with four lectures on our joint topic of social cognitive neuroscience. We gave these lectures at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 2014 with the understanding that we would publish them as part of the Jean Nicod lecture series. We first planned for seven chapters. However, over the years this book grew to 20 chapters reflecting the rapid growth of the field. We were pleased to have been asked to comment on our book's implications for mental disorders. We welcomed this task since our interest in social cognition stems from our involvement in research in autism and schizophrenia, conditions where problems with social communication and interaction loom large.

Abstract:Here, we review three arcs of Reuben Baron's legacy at the intersection of social and ecological psychology: social knowing, cooperation and coordination, and ecological values. Throughout Baron's work and collaborations, he challenged scientists across ecological and social disciplines to consider new ways of bridging existing theories to more fully account for the breadth of social experience. He often provided suggestions for future research—including many that have yet to be fully explored. Our goal in this paper is to provide a summary of his pioneering work and suggest future directions to encourage others to carry on Baron's legacy.

Abstract:The goal of this study was to apply aspects of the heuristic model advanced by Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad (1998) to the study of socialization that takes place in preschool and elementary school classrooms. Investigating socialization in this context is important given the number of hours students spend in school, the emotional nature of social interactions that take place involving teachers and students, and the emotions students often experience in the context of academic work. Guided by Eisenberg, Cumberland, et al.'s (1998) call to consider complex socialization pathways, we focus our discussion on ways teachers, peers, and the classroom context can shape students' emotion-related outcomes (e.g., self-regulation, adjustment) and academic-related outcomes (e.g., school engagement, achievement) indirectly and differentially (e.g., as a function of student or classroom characteristics). Our illustrative review of the intervention literature demonstrates that the proposed classroom-based socialization processes have clear applied implications, and efforts to improve socialization in the classroom can promote students' emotional and academic competence. Abstract:Recent work has documented a wide range of important psychological differences across societies. Multiple explanations have been offered for why such differences exist, including historical philosophies, subsistence methods, social mobility, social class, climactic stresses, and religion. With the growing body of theory and data, there is an emerging need for an organizing framework. We propose here that a behavioral ecological perspective, particularly the idea of adaptive phenotypic plasticity, can provide an overarching framework for thinking about psychological variation across cultures and societies. We focus on how societies vary as a function of six important ecological dimensions: density, relatedness, sex ratio, mortality likelihood, resources, and disease. This framework can: (a) highlight new areas of research, (b) integrate and ground existing cultural psychological explanations, (c) integrate research on variation across human societies with research on parallel variations in other animal species, (d) provide a way for thinking about multiple levels of culture and cultural change, and (e) facilitate the creation of an ecological taxonomy of societies, from which one can derive specific predictions about cultural differences and similarities. Abstract:THE subject of child psychology is really a very old one, although the interest displayed in it by so many psychologists, medical men and lay persons, is very largely a post-War phenomenon. Prof. Carl Murchison presents us with an extremely varied and well-balanced selection of papers by authorities on problems of child psychology the world over. In his preface he mentions the omission of a chapter on the delinquent child and calls for discussion. It is admittedly difficult to deal adequately with delinquency in children in a single chapter, but we think that the subject belongs very much more to the realm of psychology than to that of sociology. One has only to read Burt's “Young Delinquent” to realise the wide ramifications of delinquency when regarded as a psychological problem. We would very much welcome two or even three chapters devoted to delinquency in the next edition. The chapter devoted to eating, sleeping, and elimination is well done but seems rather long. The chapters by such authorities as Piaget and Bühler need no recommendation, since they are typical of the high standard one expects.

Abstract:The study of observational learning, or learning from others, is a cornerstone of the behavioral sciences, because it grounds the continuity, diversity, and innovation inherent to humanity's cultural repertoire within the social learning capacities of individual humans. In contrast, collective learning, or learning with others, has been underappreciated in terms of its importance to human cognition, cohesion, and culture. We offer a theory of collective learning, wherein the cognitive capacity of collective attention indicates and represents common knowledge across group members, yielding mutually known representations, emotions, evaluations, and beliefs. By enhancing the comprehension of and cohesion with fellow group members, collective attention facilitates communication, remembering, and problem-solving in human groups. We also discuss the implications of collective learning theory for the development of collective identities, social norms, and strategic cooperation. Abstract:As a discipline, developmental psychology has a long history of relying on animal models and data collected among distinct cultural groups to enrich and inform theories of the ways social and cognitive processes unfold through the lifespan. However, approaches that draw together developmental, cross-cultural and comparative perspectives remain rare. The need for such an approach is reflected in the papers by Heyes (2015 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B 371, 20150069. ( doi:10.1098/rstb.2015.0069 )), Schmelz & Call (2015 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B 371, 20150067. ( doi:10.1098/rstb.2015.0067 )) and Keller (2015 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B 371, 20150070. ( doi:10.1098/rstb.2015.0070 )) in this theme issue. Here, we incorporate these papers into a review of recent research endeavours covering a range of core aspects of social cognition, including social learning, cooperation and collaboration, prosociality, and theory of mind. In so doing, we aim to highlight how input from comparative and cross-cultural empiricism has altered our perspectives of human development and, in particular, led to a deeper understanding of the evolution of the human cultural mind.

Abstract:Beginning in the 1970s, research in childhood studies led to the reevaluation of children’s agency and their contributions to society. In my work on children’s interactions with peers and adults in schools and families, I challenged traditional views of socialization offering the alternative view of interpretive reproduction and associated concepts of peer culture and priming events. I review the development of these concepts and the importance of longitudinal comparative ethnography and audiovisual recording for capturing how research with children contributes both to rigorous reexamination of socialization theory and the field of social psychology more generally. In particular, I focus on the expansion of two theoretical concepts in my work related to the general notion of interpretive reproduction: (1) nonlinear and collective reproductive versus linear stage views of socialization and human development and (2) micro dramas in collective routines in peer culture. In the review of my methods and theory and in the expansion of my theoretical concepts, I continually raise issues regarding reexamination of Mead’s play and game stage and for the need to radically alter or even abandon the traditional concept of socialization.
