Abstract:<p>Liquid metals (LM) have shown a very broad development prospect over the past decades. This review article focuses on the latest research dedicated to liquid metal materials and their applications in five significant areas: stretchable conductive composite, intelligent sensing electronic skin, catalysis, 3D printing material, and driving machines. The fabrication, specific properties and application of stretchable liquid metal‐polymer composites that can be used as self‐healing materials have been summarized. Liquid metal deposition printing technology, liquid phase 3D printing, suspension 3D printing technology, micro‐contact printing technology, and in vivo 3D printing molding technology have also been reviewed. Furthermore, the application of liquid metal catalyst in aldehyde reaction, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis have been discussed. We have shown that electricity, magnetism, sound, light and heat could stimulate the movement of liquid metal. Through this comprehensive overview of the latest research, the main practical application, development, and mechanism of liquid metal were summarized and described. The future development of liquid metal technology was prospected, thus providing a strong basic research support for the further development of LM materials and their applications.</p>

Abstract:As a novel material, liquid metal has attracted the attention of scientists for its unique properties and wide potential applications. In this paper, the basic concepts, properties, and behaviors of liquid metals under different conditions are introduced, and the latest advances in their synthesis methods and application fields are discussed. The development status of liquid metal in science and industry is also introduced. The latest research progress of liquid metals is systematically reviewed, and the potential and application prospect of liquid metals in materials science, engineering, and electronic technology are revealed. The research scope covers the wide application of liquid metals in nanotechnology, materials engineering, electronic technology, energy, and other fields, as well as the latest application cases of liquid metals in flexible electronic devices, sensors, catalysts, energy storage, and other fields. At the same time, the core disputes and problems to be solved in the field of liquid metals are discussed. Through the comments on liquid metals, we hope to provide reference and guidance for researchers and promote the further development in the field of liquid metals. This review would help stimulate more people's interest in liquid metals and encourage innovation and application development in this field.

Abstract:As a newly emerging additive manufacturing technology, printed electronics based on the printing principle has received more and more attention. Compared to conventional electronics manufacturing, such technique has many advantages such as speediness, flexibility, personalized customization, and low cost. Currently, there are three kinds of typical conductive inks used in printed electronics-conductive carbon ink, conductive polymer, and metal conductive ink. However, the electrical conductivities of the conductive carbon ink and the conductive polymer are typically lower than 10(5) S/m, which impedes their application in high-sensitivity circuit fabrication. As to the metal conductive ink, post-treatments via long time curing process are often needed, which reduce the printing speed and improve the manufacturing costs. As an alternative, liquid metal is emerging as a new class of conductive ink and is thus becoming an important research focus. Such material has unique merits such as high electrical conductivity, simple preparation process, requesting no post-processing after printing, and so on. To further push forward the research on liquid metal-based printed electronics, this article strives to present an overview on the related research advancement in recent years. Properties of liquid metal such as oxidation, wettability, and conductivity are discussed. Liquid metal techniques including tapping mode electronic printing, atomized spray printing, microcontact printing, laser sintering method of liquid metal nanoparticles, transfer printing, masked deposition, liquid metal corrosion sculpture method, colorful liquid metal circuit fabrication method, and hybrid rolling and transfer printing method are systematically expounded. Prospective direction worth pursuing is outlined.

Abstract:As newly emerging functional materials in the field of chip cooling and thermal management, liquid metals are attracting increasing attentions over the world in recent years. Typical advancements have been found in the categories which span from high-performance liquid metal convection cooling technology, low melting point metal phase change material, metallic thermal interface material, liquid metal pump, and self-driven liquid metal energy harvester/heat sink, and so on. Benefitting from their outstanding heat extraction and transport capability over conventional coolants, liquid metals are expected to break through the bottlenecks facing current cooling strategies and thus cope well with the extremely high-flux cooling requirements. This chapter is dedicated to interpret the progresses of the liquid metal–enabled sciences and technologies in chip cooling and thermal management. The developmental history, the basic concepts, and the main fundamental knowledge thus involved are presented. Some challenging issues and future prospects along this direction are outlined.

Abstract:This article presents an overview on typical properties, technologies, and applications of liquid metal based flexible printed electronics. The core manufacturing material-room-temperature liquid metal, currently mainly represented by gallium and its alloys with the properties of excellent resistivity, enormous bendability, low adhesion, and large surface tension, was focused on in particular. In addition, a series of recently developed printing technologies spanning from personal electronic circuit printing (direct painting or writing, mechanical system printing, mask layer based printing, high-resolution nanoimprinting, etc.) to 3D room temperature liquid metal printing is comprehensively reviewed. Applications of these planar or three-dimensional printing technologies and the related liquid metal alloy inks in making flexible electronics, such as electronical components, health care sensors, and other functional devices were discussed. The significantly different adhesions of liquid metal inks on various substrates under different oxidation degrees, weakness of circuits, difficulty of fabricating high-accuracy devices, and low rate of good product-all of which are challenges faced by current liquid metal flexible printed electronics-are discussed. Prospects for liquid metal flexible printed electronics to develop ending user electronics and more extensive applications in the future are given.

Abstract:Liquid metals have garnered significant attention from researchers in recent years, and possess fascinating characteristics originating from their simultaneous metallic and liquid qualities. Their high fluidity and conductivity make liquid metals promising for broad prospects in many fields, such as composites, aerospace, flexible electronics, and biomedical devices. However, the study of liquid metals still not forming an integrated research system nowadays is neglected by the wider research community. The question of "how to improve the basic performance of flexible electronic products and endow them with more unique functions" has emerged. In this review, we provide an overview of the processing methods for liquid metal based flexible devices, with a particular emphasis on various applications based on the conductivity, such as wearable sensors, controllable switches, flexible circuits, devices based on the magnetic effect, joule heaters, and electromagnetic shielding devices. This work comprehensively introduces the application directions of liquid metals in conductivity and aims to offer innovative insights and inspiration for future research endeavors in liquid metal based flexible devices and systems.

Abstract:3D printing technology, especially for the low melting point alloy inks, represents the future de-velopment trend of advanced manufacturing technology. It is one of the most important opportunities to promote the transformation and upgrading of China's manufacturing sector and achieve its change from "world's factory" to "manufacturing power". This article is dedicated to sketch the current research status of 3D printing technology especially with low melting point alloys. In addition, it interprets the development of global 3D printing industry. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of 3D printing industry facing China is elaborated, such as the current situation, opportunities and challenges. Particularly, the article pointed out that, the currently available 3D print-ings are generally restricted to a single target, either metal or non-metal components, let alone device or biological organ with functions. Most of the typical 3D printing still cannot simultaneously deal with the metal, nonmetal and biological inks together due to their huge difference in many important physical or chemical properties such as melting points, adhesion effect and compatible printability etc. between each other. Introduction of the newly emerging liquid metal 3D printing will reshape the current category of the additive manufacture research and de-velopment. Finally, the summary and prospect of liquid metal 3D printing technology is given.

Abstract:Liquid metals, as newly‐emerging functional fluidic 3D printing inks, remain largely unexplored in terms of their interactions with various working media, from gases and liquids to solids. This review highlights the ubiquitous liquid metal 3D printing, particularly ink‐medium interactions, to optimize ink modifications and printing technologies, which is crucial for driving innovation in LM 3D printing and advancing smart manufacturing. Liquid metals (LMs) are opening large spaces for achieving functional 3D printing. However, previous fabrication strategies ever developed so far can only address a specific printing task that has yet to fulfill various needs. Conceiving that all fabrications and their output quality are dominated by the interactions between printing inks and their ambient environment, this review is dedicated to presenting a generalized framework toward the ubiquitous LM 3D printing and summarizing its fabrication category thus integrated. A panoramic view is provided that intentionally administrating the interfacial interactions among different media can guide ink modification and printing optimization. Further, the interactions between LM inks and various media are interpreted, ranging from gases, and liquids to soft matters, biological tissues, and even rigid materials, exploring key mechanisms such as oxidation facilitation, heat dissipation, structural support, modulus matching, strong wettability, and high reactivity. Following that, the LM inks, typical printing technologies, diverse working media, and enabled applications are reviewed. The elucidation of these interactions, particularly physical and chemical effects, can lead to the incubation of future LM 3D printing centers. It is expected that interactional LM 3D printing can mold additive manufacturing into ever‐powerful tools in the coming time.

Abstract:The ten articles [1–10] included in this Special Issue on “Liquid Metals” do not intend to comprehensively cover this extensive field, but, rather, to highlight recent discoveries that have greatly broadened the scope of technological applications of these materials. Improvements in understanding the physics of liquid metals are, to a large extent, due to the powerful theoretical tools in the hands of scientists, either semi-empirical [1,5,6] or ab initio (molecular dynamics, see [7]). Surface tension and wetting at metal/ceramic interfaces is an everlasting field of fundamental research with important technological implications. The review of [2] is broad enough, as the work carried out at Grenoble covers almost all interesting matters in the field. Some issues of interest in geophysics and astrophysics are discussed in [3]. The recently discovered liquid–liquid transition in several metals is dealt with in [4]. The fifth contribution [5] discusses the role of icosahedral superclusters in crystallization. In [6], thermodynamic calculations are carried out to identify the regions of the ternary phase diagram of Al-Cu-Y, where the formation of amorphous alloys is most probable. Experimental data and ab initio calculations are presented in [7] to show that an optimal microstructure is obtained if Mg is added to the Al-Si melt before than the modifier AlP alloy. Shock-induced melting of metals by means of laser driven compression is discussed in [8]. With respect to recent discoveries, one of the most outstanding developments is that of gallium alloys that are liquid at room temperature [9], and that, due to the oxide layer that readily cover their surface, maintain some “stiffness”. This has opened the possibility of 3D printing with liquid metals. The last article in this Special Issue [10] describes nano-liquid metals, a suspension of liquid metal and its alloy containing nanometer-sized particles. A room-temperature nano-liquid metal and its alloys were first introduced in the area of cooling high heat flux devices, which now is a commercial reality. However, their applications are not only in chip cooling, and can also be extended to waste heat recovery, kinetic energy harvesting, thermal interface material, etc. This is mainly due to properties such as low melting point, high thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as other additional physical or chemical properties. Abstract:As new generation functional materials, the recently emerging low‐melting liquid metals have displayed many unconventional properties superior to traditional materials. Various methods, such as alloying, oxidizing, adding metals, or non‐metallic materials and so on, have been developed to prepare desirable functional materials based on the gallium or more other metals. These methods could not only change the form of the materials, but also endow the original liquid metals with rather diversified performances, which have further expanded the application range of the low‐melting liquid metals to meet various needs. This article aims to review and summarize on the fabrication methods, characteristics, and applications of the functional liquid metal materials. Furthermore, the future outlook in this field, including challenges, routes, and related efforts, has also been illustrated and interpreted.

Abstract:The room temperature liquid metal is quickly emerging as an important functional material in a variety of areas like chip cooling, 3D printing or printed electronics etc. With diverse capabilities in electrical, thermal and flowing behaviors, such fluid owns many intriguing properties that had never been anticipated before. Here, we show a group of unconventional phenomena occurring on the liquid metal objects. Through applying electrical field on the liquid metals immersed in water, a series of complex transformation behaviors such as self-assembling of a sheet of liquid metal film into a single sphere, quick mergences of separate metal droplets, controlled self-rotation and planar locomotion of liquid metal objects can be realized. Meanwhile, it was also found that two accompanying water vortexes were induced and reliably swirled near the rotating liquid metal sphere. Further, effects of the shape, size, voltage, orientation and geometries of the electrodes to control the liquid metal transformers were clarified. Such events are hard to achieve otherwise on rigid metal or conventional liquid spheres. This finding has both fundamental and practical significances which suggest a generalized way of making smart soft machine, collecting discrete metal fluids, as well as flexibly manipulating liquid metal objects including accompanying devices.

Abstract:In recent years, gallium-based liquid metal has emerged as a prominent research material in the realm of flexible electronics, owing to its exceptional electrical conductivity and deformability. The crux of developing flexible electronic devices using liquid metal as a conductive material lies in the patterning of the liquid metal. Inkjet printing technology possesses the capability to efficiently craft functional patterns by printing any inkable material. However, due to the facile oxidation of the gallium-based liquid metal surface in ambient air, leading to the formation of oxide films and the presence of high surface tension, conventional inkjet printing techniques are incapable of directly rendering liquid metal prints. This manuscript introduces a refined and remarkably efficient approach to inkjet printing utilizing the liquid metal. By deftly adjusting the interfacial tension of the liquid metal at the nozzle with ultra-low potentials, falling within the 2-V range, the achievement of on-demand, micron-scale liquid metal microdroplet ejection printing surpassing 3 kHz is brought to fruition. This article delves into unraveling the mechanisms of potential modulation on the interfacial tension of the liquid metal at the nozzle, as well as the fundamental theories pertaining to the formation and migration of liquid metal microdroplets. These insights establish a theoretical and technical foundation for the application of liquid metals in the field of electronic printing.

Abstract:With the rapid development of deep space exploration and commercial flight, a series of tough scientific and technological challenges were raised, which urgently require ever advanced technologies to tackle with. Recently, liquid metals, as a kind of newly emerging functional material, are attracting various attention and many breakthroughs have been made on earth. Such a scientific trend also suggests promising approaches for solving those extreme challenges in space environment. To fulfill the increasing needs thus involved, this article is dedicated to systematically introducing liquid metal material and its related disciplines into space science and technology. Firstly, existing application of liquid metal cooling for space nuclear power was summarized. Then, some potential space practices were tentatively put forward, such as liquid metal thermal interface medium, liquid metal phase change material, liquid metal convection cooling, metal alloy thermal storage, liquid metal electromagnetic shielding and liquid metal electronic printing. Fundamental as well as practical issues that would differ with earth were interpreted. Finally, potential liquid metal space experiments were proposed to investigate the liquid metal hydrodynamic characteristic, wettability and phase change mechanism in space physical environment. Overall, liquid metal enabled space science and technology investigation will not only help efficiently solve the current and future space technological problems, but also aid to stimulate the advancement of liquid metal space material science.

In this review, we present a succinct examination of LM-based composites and highlight their notable characteristics. We discuss the contributing factors of low melting points and exceptional thermal and electrical conductivities. Abstract:Abstract Conventional electronic manufacturers are generally not easily accessible due to complicated procedures, time, material and energy consuming, and may generate potential pollution to the environment. From an alternative, liquid metal printed electronics to quickly fabricate electronic circuits and functional devices were proposed a decade before. To promote the further development and application of liquid metal printed electronics, this review aims to summarize and analyze the progress of liquid metal printed electronics from three aspects, namely electronic inks, printing technology and applications. Then, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities for further development of liquid metal printed electronics from several aspects including material modification, technological innovation, equipment upgrading and potential applications. It is expected that liquid metal printed electronics allow one to make electronics at anytime, anywhere at low cost which indicates the coming of a new era of ubiquitous electrical engineering.

Advanced liquid metal cooling: Historical developments and research frontiers

Abstract:The thermal barrier problem has been a major bottleneck that hinders the development of high-profile chips and optoelectronic devices. Hence, it is urgent to develop high-performance chip cooling and thermal management technologies to tackle this challenge. As a class of newly emerging thermal management materials, liquid metals have revolutionized the concepts and technologies in the areas of convective cooling, thermal interface materials, and phase change materials. The liquid metals enable cooling technologies to break the performance limit of conventional cooling methods and provide powerful solutions for the cooling of devices and equipment which are faced with tough thermal barrier issues. They are expected to play a key role in areas such as defense equipment, aerospace industry, energy systems, and consumer electronics. This paper is dedicated to a systematic review on the developments and frontiers of liquid metal cooling technologies, mainly including liquid metal convection cooling, liquid metal based thermal interface materials, low melting point metal phase change materials and liquid metal enabled combinatorial heat transfer science and cooling technologies. The main scientific issues and technical challenges lying behind are outlined and discussed in order to help better stimulate the development and applications in the area.
Liquid Phase 3D Printing for Quickly Manufacturing Metal Objects with Low Melting Point Alloy Ink

Abstract:Conventional 3D printings are generally time-consuming and printable metal inks are rather limited. From an alternative way, we proposed a liquid phase 3D printing for quickly making metal objects. Through introducing metal alloys whose melting point is slightly above room temperature as printing inks, several representative structures spanning from one, two and three dimension to more complex patterns were demonstrated to be quickly fabricated. Compared with the air cooling in a conventional 3D printing, the liquid-phase-manufacturing offers a much higher cooling rate and thus significantly improves the speed in fabricating metal objects. This unique strategy also efficiently prevents the liquid metal inks from air oxidation which is hard to avoid otherwise in an ordinary 3D printing. Several key physical factors (like properties of the cooling fluid, injection speed and needle diameter, types and properties of the printing ink, etc.) were disclosed which would evidently affect the printing quality. In addition, a basic route to make future liquid phase 3D printer incorporated with both syringe pump and needle arrays was also suggested. The liquid phase 3D printing method, which owns potential values not available in a conventional modality, opens an efficient way for quickly making metal objects in the coming time.

Abstract:Liquid metals are promising multifunctional materials, but their single-colour physical appearance limits their applicability. There are several methods to endow liquid metals with colour and fluorescence, and although breakthroughs have been made in controlling their optical and interfacial properties, more work is needed to refine the synthetic strategies, better understand the coloration effects and enable the applications of colourful liquid metals.
