Abstract:Drug abuse poses a significant challenge to families and society, manifesting in various detrimental effects. Within families, substance abuse can lead to emotional distress, financial strain, and a breakdown of trust and relationships. It often results in neglect or abuse of children, creating an unstable home environment that hampers the psychological and emotional development of young family members. Additionally, drug abuse can lead to domestic violence and an increase in healthcare and legal issues for the family. On a societal level, drug abuse contributes to increased healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and higher crime rates. The burden on public health systems grows as more individuals require medical treatment for addiction and related health complications. Economically, businesses suffer from decreased productivity and higher absenteeism among employees who struggle with substance abuse. Crime rates tend to escalate as individuals may engage in illegal activities to fund their addiction, which strains law enforcement and judicial systems. Social services also face increased pressure as they work to support affected families and individuals. Efforts to combat drug abuse require comprehensive strategies that include prevention, education, treatment, and rehabilitation programs. Support systems for families, improved access to mental health services, and community-based interventions are crucial to mitigating the impact of drug abuse. By addressing the root causes and providing robust support mechanisms, it is possible to alleviate the profound effects of drug abuse on both families and society.

Abstract:There is a marked affect of surrounding social environment on the behaviour of a human being. The kind of environment reflects in the nature of the behaviour of a human being. The objective of our research is to see the affect of some social factor on drug abuser and non abuser viz inhabitation, father’s education, father’s occupation, father’s Income etc. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among student (20-25year) studying in P.G. in Magadh University using the Drug Abuse Schedule and Personal and Family Data Sheet. A total of 300 students studying in various department of were taken for study purpose. A significant association existed between social factor and Drug abuse behaviour in youth. The present study has both theoretical and practical application. Keeping this in view the present work was undertaken.

Abstract:Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which encompasses aspects such as thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and the ability to cope with life's challenges. Several factors including drug abuse have been recognized to cause mental health disorders; hence, the urgent need to globally address these factors. Drug abuse emerges as a complex public health issue, involving the misuse of legal and illegal drugs, with consequences extending beyond individual health. The relationship between mental health and drug abuse intensifies challenges, as drug misuse contributes to the development or worsening of mental health disorders. This review examined biological, psychological, and social determinants, and advocate for a standardized approach to address the complex issue of drug abuse. Various electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, and others, were used to access resources, in which thirty-three (33) literatures were reviewed. Results of the reviewed literatures revealed that the impact of drug abuse on mental health involves neurobiological alterations affecting neurotransmitter levels and structural changes in the brain. This does not only affect individuals, but also results in societal burdens, such as increased healthcare costs and criminal justice involvement, compounded by the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse. The classification of drugs into legal and illegal categories highlights the diversity of substances and emphasizes the need to understand their effects on mental well-being. Categories include legal drugs, prescription medications, socially accepted substances, and illegal drugs with varying dependency potentials. Addressing mental health disorders induced by drug abuse requires a comprehensive approach, involving strategies like Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT), Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Peer Support, 12-Step Programs, and Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC). These methods guarantee a care continuum that centers on the individual and emphasizes recovery, acknowledging the relationship between mental health and drug abuse disorders. Nevertheless, the review highlights a research gap in that, in-depth research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the aforementioned interventions. Additionally, exploring innovative strategies to address challenges such as stigma, limited treatment accessibility, and the cyclical nature of addiction would enhance intervention effectiveness.

Abstract:This study was conducted to assess the causes, effects, and control measures of drug abuse. The review was composed of literature search from databases (Google Scholar, Science Direct, Springer, Scopus and PubMed). Major findings from this study includes: a) Causes of Drug Abuse: The causes of drug abuse varies from social, interpersonal, cultural, environmental, and family factors. People abuse drugs due to pleasure derived from it. Drug abuse can be socially learned through drug use by peer group members, exposure to offers to use, and easy access to drugs. Pressure from friends that abuse drugs including their frequent escalation of drug experience may appeal others to start the use of drugs. Curiosity arising from recurrent references to drugs by public media generate curiosity for having a personal experience of the drugs. Growing up in a single-parent family, lack of parental support or supervision as well as low involvement with the child, and exposure of children to elders in the family who take drugs can promote drug use. Frustration and depression could make some people to take drugs to experience relief or relief from pain mostly from a prolonged use of pain-relieving drugs prescribed by a doctor. b) Effects of Drug Abuse: The signs or harmful effects of drug abuse could be physical, emotional, family dynamics, school behaviours, and social problems. They include cardiovascular disease; abnormalities in brain structure and function; respiratory problems; weakened immune system; insomnia; reduction in libido or sexual dysfunction; anxiety and irritability; loss or increase in appetite; and poor judgment. Different crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape have been identified with young people under the influence of drugs. Family dynamics will reflect in the form of secretiveness, withdrawing from family, starting arguments, and breaking rules. For the school behaviours, the teenager will begin to play truancy, display discipline problems, decline in grades, decreased interest, many absences, and subsequently withdrawal from school. In terms of social problems, the teenager will begin to have problems with the law, have new friends, abnormal request for money, changes to less conventional styles in dress and music. c) Control Measures for Drug Abuse: Effective drug prevention programs should involve the family, schools, communities, and the media. This includes creating healthy home environment (functional family communication or interaction, parents taking extra measures to monitor the activities of their children including their associations, reduce child’s exposure to drug users in the family). Government should provide easy and affordable access to rehabilitation centres, implement effective addiction counselling and prevention programmes, provide policies that would address the wider availability of drugs in the society, create job opportunities for youth to become self-reliant; develop effective awareness/campaign programs on drug abuse; establish recreational centres; and finally religiosity can prevent people from using drugs even if they are exposed to drugs in the environment.

Abstract:Substance dependence is a prevalent and urgent public health problem. In 2021, 60 million Americans reported abusing alcohol within the month prior to being surveyed, and nearly 20 million Americans reported using illegal drugs (e.g., heroin) or prescription drugs (e.g., opioids) for nonmedical reasons in the year before. Drug-involved overdose rates have been steadily increasing over the past 20 years. This increase has been primarily driven by opioid and stimulant use. Despite its prevalence, drug dependence is one of the most stigmatized health conditions. Stigma has myriad negative consequences for its targets, including limiting their access to employment and housing, disrupting interpersonal relationships, harming physical and mental health, and reducing help-seeking. However, because research on stigma toward people with substance use disorders (SUDs) is relatively sparse compared with research on stigma toward other mental illnesses, the field lacks a comprehensive understanding of the causes and consequences of SUD stigma. Moreover, it remains unclear how, if at all, these factors differ from other types of mental illness stigma. The goal of this review is to take stock of the literature on SUD stigma, providing a clear set of foundational principles and a blueprint for future research and translational activity.

The drug abuse scourge and food insecurity: outlining effective responses for an underestimated problem

Abstract:Food insecurity results from the unavailability or inability to gain access to quality, nutritious food in a given area. It would be a mistake to believe food insecurity as a phenomenon limited to low-income countries: millions of food insecure households are in fact located in wealthy countries. A strong association between substance abuse and food insecurity has been reported by research data, with as many as 70% of those with addiction and abuse found to be food insecure. It is in fact not uncommon for those with drug addiction or alcoholism issues to skip meals even for days in order to fuel their addiction and spend that money on drugs or alcohol. The underlying dynamics of food insecurity brought about by drug abuse and mental illness patterns have far-reaching ramifications which affect addicts and their families as well, primarily children, who stand to suffer major life-changing repercussions. In order to address such correlations and harmful (and currently rather underresearched) developments, multidisciplinary efforts need to include research, law enforcement and social workers, particularly in light of the dangers posed by the threat of elusive and hard to detect synthetic substances.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore how the social harm approach can be adapted within drug policy scholarship. Since the mid-2000s, a group of critical criminologists have moved beyond the concept of crime and criminology, towards the study of social harm. This turn proceeds decades of research that highlights the inequities within the criminal legal system, the formation of laws that protect the privileged and punish the disadvantaged, and the systemic challenge of the effectiveness of retribution and punishment at addressing harm in the community. The purpose of this paper is to first identify parallels between the social harm approach and critical drug scholarship, and second to advocate for the adoption of a social harm lens in drug policy scholarship. In the paper, we draw out the similarities between social harm and drug policy literatures, as well as outline what the study of social harm can bring to an analysis of drug policy. This includes a discussion on the ontology of drug crime, the myth of drug crime and the ineffective use of the crime control system in response to drug use. The paper then discusses how these conversations in critical criminology and critical drugs scholarship can be brought together to inform future drug policy research. This reflection details the link between social harm and the impingement of human flourishing, explores the role of decolonizing drug policy, advocates for the centralization of lived experience within the research process and outlines how this might align with harm reduction approaches. We conclude by arguing that the social harm approach challenges the idea that neutrality is the goal in drug policy and explicitly seeks to expand new avenues in activist research and social justice approaches to policymaking.

Abstract:RationaleSocial factors influence drug abuse. Conversely, drugs of abuse alter social behavior. This is especially pertinent during post-weaning development, when there are profound changes in the social repertoire, and the sensitivity to the positive and negative effects of drugs of abuse is altered.ObjectivesThis study aimed to provide an overview of our current understanding of the interaction between drugs of abuse and juvenile/adolescent social behavior.MethodsWe first provide evidence that a characteristic form of juvenile and adolescent social behavior, i.e., social play behavior, has reinforcing properties and is affected by drugs of abuse. Next, social risk factors for drug use and addiction are described, including antisocial personality traits and early social insults. Last, we discuss research that investigates social influences on drug use, as well as the consequences of perinatal drug exposure on later social interactions.ResultsSocial play behavior is highly rewarding in laboratory animals, and it is affected by low doses of opioids, cannabinoids, ethanol, nicotine, and psychostimulants. In humans, antisocial personality traits, most prominently in the form of conduct disorder, are a prominent risk factor for drug addiction. Preclinical studies have consistently shown altered sensitivity to drugs as a result of social isolation during post-weaning development. The social environment of an individual has a profound, but complex, influence on drug use, and perinatal drug exposure markedly alters later social interactions.ConclusionsThe studies reviewed here provide a framework to understand the interaction between drugs of abuse and adolescent social interaction, at the preclinical and the clinical level.

Abstract:Background: Juvenile delinquency appears to be the most widespread social issue in comparison to other social issues. Social factors and conditions have a significant impact on the prevalence of delinquency. Individuals who engage in criminal behavior before reaching the age of 18 are commonly referred to as juvenile offenders. The aim of this study is to comprehensively elucidate the research and work carried out on juvenile offenders, with a specific focus on the critical role played by social factors in all facets of juvenile delinquency. Additionally, this research seeks to investigate the social roots and influences that contribute to the criminal behavior of young offenders. Materials and methods: This article uses a literature review methodology to analyze research on social factors influencing juvenile delinquency. It synthesizes and evaluates prior findings to understand the complex interplay between social factors and young individuals' involvement in delinquent behaviors. The study analyzed 80 articles from reputable online databases, focusing on juvenile delinquency, offenders, crime, and social factors. Out of the 80 articles, 53 were cited, meeting inclusion criteria, including publication within 2000-2023, rigorous peer-review, and reputable database indexing. Results: As per the findings of the research, it has been observed that children who grow up in households that exhibit affection, hospitality, and encouragement are comparatively less susceptible to the manifestation of societal maladies. Children who have experienced parental abandonment are at heightened risk of developing delinquent behaviors. Conclusion: The presence of negative family dynamics and associations with delinquent peers are widely recognized as significant contributors to the development of drug abuse behavior. It is imperative for policymakers and preventive initiatives to have a comprehensive understanding of this complex relationship. Therefore, this literature review presented a distinct overview of the influence of social factors on juvenile offenders in India.

It is therefore crucial to strengthen the links between addiction science and drug policy. Drug Policy and the Public Good is collaboratively written by an international group of career scientists to provide an analytical basis on which to build relevant global drugpolicies, and to inform policy makers who have direct responsibility for public health and social welfare. Drug Policy and the Public Good presents, in a comprehensive, practical, and readily accessible form, the accumulated scientific knowledge on illicit drugs that has direct relevance to the development of drug policy on local, national, and international levels. Abstract:The present paper examines the issue of hidden drug abuse in Hong Kong. Although official statistics show that the reported number of drug-abuse cases has been in decline in recent years, it has been reported that drug abusers tend to hide themselves at home to take drugs; thus, they are not discovered easily by the law enforcement and social control agents who report drug abuse cases to the Central Registry of Drug Abuse, resulting in the decrease in the reported number of drug-abuse cases. This "dark figure" phenomenon is a reflection of the official figure and reporting behavior, not the actual situation of drug abuse in Hong Kong. Through in-depth interviews of 30 ex-drug addicts, the majority of them started drug taking in early youth, the present paper identifies five stages of drug taking from social acquaintance to social isolation. It argues that although drug taking among abusers is a kind of social activity in their initial stage of drug use, they become socially isolated when their drug use is prolonged. Several reasons are identified, including users' easy accessibility to drugs and changes in the popularity of drugs and use of drug equipment. Most importantly, the hidden process is triggered and aggravated by numerous negative drug effects, such as decline in physical health, weak physical appearance leading to self-perceived discrimination, co-occurrence of psychiatric symptoms of increased anxiety and suspicion, and decline of trust among peers due to prolonged drug abuse. Possible solutions associated with clinical interventions, legislative policies, and law-enforcement operations are proposed.

Abstract:Family and social lives are the several factors that lead someone to be involved in drug abuse, specifically in children and adults. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) noted that in 2021 the number of drug users worldwide was around 275 million in the past year. The National Narcotics Board or Badan Nasional Narkotik (BNN) Baddoka recorded that the number of clients undergoing rehabilitation in 2021 was 256, with 218 at severe levels, 36 at moderate levels, and 2 at mild levels, then 188 clients had completed rehabilitation. This study aimed to describe family and social environment factors to clients on drug abuse. This was descriptive research in that number of samples was 75 respondents selected by purposive sampling. The results revealed that most of the clients had inappropriate family and social environments. The former clients are encouraged to maintain proper relationships with their family and social life to avoid the potential opportunity for drug abuse. Furthermore, families are suggested to support and deliver more attention to clients who had run the rehabilitation process.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A systematic literature review on social determinations and consumption of psychoactive substances was realized. The research was accomplished in some databases, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, using the descriptors "Social Determinants in Health" and the Boolean descriptor AND for the term "Disorders Related to Substance Use". Then, 78 articles were selected, in which a concentration of studies was observed in the northern hemisphere, emphasizing on micro social factors. The most studied drugs were multiple substances (44.9%), alcohol (21.8%) and tobacco (15.4%), highlighting the determinants of income (35.9%), sex, family and territory (26.9% each). It is important to consider drug use as a complex and multifaceted biopsychosocial phenomenon, requiring greater production of evidence in developing countries, using different epistemological and methodological perspectives.

Abstract:The war on drugs is an effort to of the Philippine government to combat illegal drug use by greatly increasing penalties, enforcement, and incarceration for drug offenders. But the impacts have led to consequences such as decreased household income, incidents of child labor, and children dropping out of school, thus demonstrating the war on drugs deteriorated the overall wellbeing of children living in poverty. This study explored the challenges encountered by the families affected in the war on drugs of the government. The study focused on a case study of the social consequences of the war on drugs for affected families. The case study research design was employed in these studies. It was participated by the chosen respondents of Barangay Gata Diot, Clarin, Misamis Occidental. Interview responses were analyzed using Yin’s 5-step data analysis approach. This study generated four (4) themes: (1) Emotional Distress (2) Family, Relatives and Peer Influence (3) Frustration (4) Sustainability of Livelihood. In this study the researcher analyzed the data using Yin’s 5-step data analysis approach. The second step involves the researcher breaking down the data to reduce and eliminate recurring themes of the phenomena. As a result, most of the participants have different responses on the social consequences of the on drugs in the affected families. These challenge gives a big impact to the affected families emotionally, mentally and financially. But despite of the challenge they were encountered, the participant was able to fine alternative solution to survive in that situation. Further, the affected families in war on drugs must be given a full support by our government, especially in strengthening community-based initiatives, encourage the development of community-based initiatives that promote awareness, education, and prevention of drug abuse. Such initiatives can include support groups, counselling services, and educational campaigns targeting families and individuals at risk. And develop comprehensive support programs just liked establish specialized support programs aimed at addressing the specific needs of families affected by the war on drugs. And lastly, these programs should provide emotional, psychological, and financial support to help families cope with the challenges they face.
Legal and social consequences of substance use: Results from a nationwide study in Bangladesh

Abstract:<span>Substance use is a major public health concern and its consequences can destroy someone's life. This study aimed to explore the legal and social consequences of substance use in Bangladesh. We conducted a nationwide descriptive cross-sectional study among relapse cases of substance use from January to December 2018. We visited 138 drug rehabilitation centers countrywide and were able to recruit 939 relapse cases, from where 28 cases were excluded due to incomplete data. Finally, data from 911 cases were analyzed. The majority (89.3%) of the study participants were 19-45 years old. Most commonly used drugs were amphetamine (76.1%), cannabis (75.0%), alcohol (54.3%), cough sirup (54.2%), heroin (47.0%) and sleeping pills (21.6%). Almost half (49.5%) of the substance users were arrested for drug use and among arrested cases, 52.1% were sent to jail. About 75% of the substance users experienced a lack of family interaction, 70% experienced destroyed family relationships, and 71.4% faced social stigma. Our study also found 60% of the participants were bullied, 50% were deprived or unwilling to have social interactions. Moreover, 13.8% of the participants left home, while 8% got divorced. Our data represented the significant impact of substance use on the legal aspect and social life of individuals. However, with a multi-dimensional treatment, rehabilitation, and social intervention approach, it is not impossible to overcome. Therefore, we believe it is imperative to focus on social awareness and to create a robust platform for health promotion and improve quality of life.</span>

There is reason to be concerned about the high rates of drug and alcohol addiction among youths because of the substantial problems that have been linked to such use, including higher rates of aggression, suicidal attempts, etc., In this narrative review, we have focused on illicit drugs, substance use, its negative impacts among youths and its prevalence among youths nationally and internationally, and also some prevention strategies to control substance use.

Abstract:Abstract The stigma surrounding individuals who have substance use disorders is a pervasive phenomenon that has had detrimental effects on treatment outcomes, health care providers, treatments, research, policies, and society as a whole (Kelly JF, Dow SJ, Westerhoff C , J Drug Issues_40:805-818, Kelly JF, Westerhoff, Int J Drug Policy_21:202-207, 2010). Stigma can be cultivated by various sources, but this article specifically focuses on the impact words have. Individuals influence each other through dynamic language processes. Language, which we use to communicate, represents shared values, history, beliefs, and customs. Moreover, language can be used to promote stigma or decrease it [Snodgrass S: The Power of Words: Changing the Language of Addiction, 2920]. Language usage for addiction medical care is dated in comparison to other standards. Research and organizations are recognizing that substance use treatment, policies, and language need to evolve to aid this crisis and those affected by this disease. Language sustains the stigma surrounding substance use. The stigmatized language used to describe substance use behaviors, individuals with substance use disorders, and substance use treatment can create barriers in essential areas, such as health care, employment, insurance policies, and laws for individuals who are trying to heal and make meaningful contributions to society. There are many ways to contribute to a more accepting society, but it starts with bottom-up processes like language choices in day-to-day conversations. An effort must be made to normalize destigmatized language when referring to substance use and individuals with substance use disorders.

The Phenomenon of Drug Abuse in the Jordanian Society and its Impact on the Individual and Society

Abstract:This study aims at identifying the phenomenon of drug abuse in the Jordanian society and its impact on the individual and society. In order to achieve the study objectives, the researcher developed a questionnaire for collecting data. The researcher used the method of simple random sample to determine the study sample. The study sample consisted of (625) individuals. The study results showed that the social factors leading to drugs abuse in the Jordanian society were in the first place, followed by the economic factors, while the psychological factors were in the third place. The results also revealed that the most prominent effects of drug abuse on the individual were related to anxiety and semi-constant stress with a predisposition to depression in the first place, followed by sensitivity and arousal even for the simplest matters with insomnia or lack of desire to sleep, while the misunderstanding of time, place, distance and sizes as well as inability to discriminate things were in the third place. The results also revealed that the most prominent effects of drug abuse on the society were related to tribal violence in the first place, followed by low social coherence between the society individuals in the second rank, while family disintegration was in the third rank. The results showed that there are no statistically significant differences between the responses of the sample individuals regarding the factors leading to drug abuse in the Jordanian society due to gender, age, educational level, place of residence and income at (α≤0.05).
