Abstract:The dispersion degree of polarization, a new definition of the depolarization degree of partially polarized beams, is first proposed, to the best of our knowledge, to measure the performance of fiber depolarizers. First, the description of the polarization based on the Poincaré sphere is introduced. Then, the modified Delaunay triangulation algorithm is introduced, and the calculation formula of the dispersion degree of polarization is given based on this algorithm. The experimental device was set up, and the dispersion degree of polarization of the depolarized light after the fiber depolarizer was measured to be 47.3%. The components and proportions of polarization in the depolarized light were also obtained. Compared with the degree of polarization, the dispersion degree of polarization can quantitatively analyze the light polarization evaluation in the time dimension and provide a numerical reference for improving the depolarizer, thus increasing the fiber sensor's accuracy.

Abstract:The development of optoelectronic devices requires breakthroughs in new material systems and novel device mechanisms, and the demand recently changes from the detection of signal intensity and responsivity to the exploration of sensitivity of polarized state information. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are a rich family exhibiting diverse physical and electronic properties for polarization device applications, including anisotropic materials, valleytronic materials, and other hybrid heterostructures. In this review, we first review the polarized-light-dependent physical mechanism in 2D materials, then present detailed descriptions in optical and optoelectronic properties, involving Raman shift, optical absorption, and light emission and functional optoelectronic devices. Finally, a comment is made on future developments and challenges. The plethora of 2D materials and their heterostructures offers the promise of polarization-dependent scientific discovery and optoelectronic device application.

Efficient Modeling of Depolarizing Mueller BRDFs

Abstract:Light-matter interactions within indoor environments are significantly depolarizing. Nonetheless, the relatively small polarization attributes are informative. To make use of this information, polarized-BRDF (pBRDF) models for common indoor materials are sought. Fresnel reflection and diffuse partial polarization are popular terms in pBRDF models, but the relative contribution of each is highly material-dependent and changes based on scattering geometry and albedo. An efficient pBRDF would describe these dependencies with as few parameters as possible while retaining physical significance and task-relevant information. This work compares a triply-degenerate (TD)-Mueller matrix (MM) model to measurements of 3D printed objects. In this TD-MM model, the radiometric, polarimetric, and depolarization attributes are decoupled to reduce the number of parameters. The depolarization is quantified by a single geometry-dependent parameter, four geometry-independent material constants describe the polarization properties, and our TD-MM model is normalized to unit radiance so that the BRDF is decoupled. To test an application of the TD-MM model the material constants are assumed and the geometry-dependent depolarization parameter for a red 3D printed sphere is estimated from linear Stokes images. The geometry-averaged error of the depolarization parameter is 4.2% at 662 nm (high albedo) and 11.7% at 451 nm (low albedo). Since the error is inversely proportional to albedo and depolarization, the TD-MM model is referred to as appropriate for depolarization-dominant materials. The robustness of the TD-MM model is also tested by comparing ground-truth Mueller images to extrapolations of a red 3D printed Stanford bunny under arbitrary polarized illumination.

Abstract:The behavior of polarization and spin density of polarized light waves propagating inside an anisotropic medium is considered.Differing from the light in an isotropic medium,the polarization states and helicity eigenstates of the light waves will evolve in the anisotropic medium.The evolutional spin densities of both the circularly and the elliptically polarized light waves have been calculated,and the effects relevant to the polarization state evolution have been analyzed.An optical analog of Einstein-de Haas experimental scenario has been suggested in order to test the angular momentum transfer between light waves and anisotropic media.Such evolutional states of light would find potential applications in the field of quantum information.

Abstract:Polarization techniques are revolutionizing material functionalities across energy, environmental, and electronic sectors. This review comprehensively examines polarization mechanisms such as piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and pyroelectric effects, alongside strategies like doping and heterostructures. It highlights its pivotal role in enhancing charge dynamics, modifying surface chemistries, and facilitating energy‐efficient designs in various applications. The sustainable future relies on the synergistic development of energy, environmental, and electronic systems, founded on the development of functional materials by exploring their quantum mechanisms. Effective control over the distribution and behavior of charges within these materials, a basic quantum attribute, is crucial in dictating their physical, chemical, and electronic properties. At the core of charge manipulation lies "polarization"—a ubiquitous phenomenon marked by separating positive and negative charges. This review thoroughly examines polarization techniques, spotlighting their transformative role in catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, and electronics. Starting with the foundational mechanisms underlying various forms of polarization, including piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and pyroelectric effects, the perspective is expanded to cover any asymmetric phenomena that generate internal fields, such as heterostructures and doping. Afterward, the critical role of polarization across various applications, including charge separation, surface chemistry modification, and energy band alignment, is highlighted. Special emphasis is placed on the synergy between polarization and material properties, demonstrating how this interplay is pivotal in overcoming existing technological limitations and unlocking new functionalities. Abstract:Low dimensional micro/nanomaterials with highly anisotropic optoelectronic properties manifesting remarkable light polarization characteristics have potential applications in the liquid crystal displays, visible light communications, ultrasensitive photodetectors, optical quantum computing. medical therapy. and supramolecular chirality control. Rare-earth ions-doped materials can he precisely controlled in terms of morphology, size, colloidal monodispersity, and energy transfer mediated luminescence processes, providing a basis for exploring the light polarization characteristics of rare-earth ions. Currently, the light polarization characteristics of various rare-earth ions in different structures have been detected. Thus, this paper briefly summarizes the researches on light polarization characteristics of rare-earth ions doped materials. The linear and circular polarization characteristics of the luminescence from rare-earth ions in different structures are introduced according to the classification of polarized light. The factors influencing these two polarization characteristics, and the relationship between the factors and the structure are analyzed and discussed in detail. Additionally, the applications of light polarization characteristics of rare-earth ions-doped materials in different fields are summarized. Finally, the future development in this direction is prospected.

The horizontal polarization and vertical polarization of photon are regarded as quantum states of a tow-state system. On the basis of Jones matrix, the common polarized elements in quantum states are described. Abstract:Optical polarizers are essential components for the selection and manipulation of light polarization states in optical systems. Over the past decade, the rapid advancement of photonic technologies and devices has led to the development of a range of novel optical polarizers, opening avenues for many breakthroughs and expanding applications across diverse fields. Particularly, two-dimensional (2D) materials, known for their atomic thin film structures and unique optical properties, have become attractive for implementing optical polarizers with high performance and new features that were not achievable before. This paper reviews recent progress in 2D-material-based optical polarizers. First, an overview of key properties of various 2D materials for realizing optical polarizers is provided. Next, the state-of-the-art optical polarizers based on 2D materials, which are categorized into spatial-light devices, fiber devices, and integrated waveguide devices, are reviewed and compared. Finally, we discuss the current challenges of this field as well as the exciting opportunities for future technological advances.
Polarized Light Transport in Anisotropic Media Composed of Ellipsoids: Influence of Structural Anisotropy

Abstract:In this study, the propagation of polarized light in anisotropic media composed of prolate ellipsoids oriented in the same direction is investigated. We proposed a DDA-Monte Carlo combined algorithm to solve the radiative transfer problem. By comparisons of backscattering two-dimensional images of Mueller matrix, the results show that, the changing information of aspect ratio and orientation of ellipsoidal scatterers can be well encoded in image-based Mueller matrix. Moreover, the effect of aspect ratio and orientation on diattenuation, retardance, depolarization and linear retardance are demonstrated by decomposing the Mueller matrix. Furthermore, the impact of aspect ratio on the rate of depolarization of linearly and circularly polarized light with optical thickness has been construed. This study has proved that structural anisotropy decelerates the depolarization rate of scattering light and traditional diffusion theory cannot be used to solve polarized light transport in anisotropic media. Our study can promote a further research on the physics of radiative transfer in anisotropic media. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polarons are composite quasiparticles comprising electronic charge carriers taken together with the alterations they induce in surrounding condensed matter. Strong-coupling polarons form when electronic charge carriers become self-trapped: bound within potential wells stabilized by carriers presence. Distinctively, exciting these bound carriers generates broad absorption bands. Strong-coupling polarons are slow and massive since moving them requires atomic motion. Their transport differs qualitatively from that of conventional electronic charge carriers. Large (strong-coupling) polarons move coherently with mobilities that fall with rising temperature. These massive quasiparticles very weak scatterings by phonons produce much lower room-temperature mobilities than those permitted of conventional electronic charge carriers. Moreover, the long scattering times associated with large polarons weak scattering relegates their principal ac (Drude) transport to below phonon frequencies. Small (strong-coupling) polarons move incoherently with even lower thermally assisted mobilities. Strikingly, a magnetic field often deflects small polarons in the opposite sense than it does conventional charge carriers, thereby producing anomalously signed Hall Effects. In exceptional circumstances charge carriers self-trap in pairs thereby forming large and small bipolarons. Some transport features distinguish them from polarons. Interference between carrier-induced atomic displacement patterns produce attractive interactions between like-charged polarons and short-range repulsive interactions between oppositely charged polarons.

Abstract:The study of scattered polarized light has led to important advances in distinct fields such as astronomy, atmospheric sciences and bio-imaging. In random diffusing media, light disorientation and the scrambling of its polarization state appear to always occur together. Their apparent inseparability suggests a profound connection between optical transport and depolarization. Here, we present experimental evidence of their equivalence and quantify their relationship in colloidal suspensions of microscopic constituents. In particular, a proportionality relation between optical transport lengths and their depolarization counterparts is provided. This equivalence imposes depolarization whenever light traverses random media and holds for wide spectral ranges and scatterer concentrations. Our results clarify the connection between microscopic processes and measurable polarization signatures.

Abstract:In recent years, enhanced light–matter interactions through a plethora of dipole-type polaritonic excitations have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. In graphene, electrically tunable and highly confined plasmon-polaritons were predicted and observed, opening up opportunities for optoelectronics, bio-sensing and other mid-infrared applications. In hexagonal boron nitride, low-loss infrared-active phonon-polaritons exhibit hyperbolic behaviour for some frequencies, allowing for ray-like propagation exhibiting high quality factors and hyperlensing effects. In transition metal dichalcogenides, reduced screening in the 2D limit leads to optically prominent excitons with large binding energy, with these polaritonic modes having been recently observed with scanning near-field optical microscopy. Here, we review recent progress in state-of-the-art experiments, and survey the vast library of polaritonic modes in 2D materials, their optical spectral properties, figures of merit and application space. Taken together, the emerging field of 2D material polaritonics and their hybrids provide enticing avenues for manipulating light–matter interactions across the visible, infrared to terahertz spectral ranges, with new optical control beyond what can be achieved using traditional bulk materials.

Abstract:We propose a physically realizable space for the polarized light scattering measurement using the Stokes-Mueller formalism by a purity-index-depolarization-index (PI-P-Delta) plane. The parameter PI is defined from indices of polarimetric purity (IPP), which exhibits the overall magnitude of the polarimetric randomness of a medium, while the depolarization index (P-Delta)delineates a proper global degree of polarimetric purity and may also refer to the average measure of depolarization power of the scattering medium. Subregions and curves connecting the edge points in the plane are obtained by imposing certain constraints on the IPP; consequently any point on the subregion indicates the information related to a decomposition of the Mueller matrix into its components as a convex sum. From the same set of constraints, complete information about the depolarization index versus the entropy [S(M)-P-Delta] diagram is recovered. This work provides a simple geometric representation and a deeper perceptivity of the light scattering media comprising depolarization.
Polarization state transition mechanism of light through turbid media by Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract:We study the propagation of polarized light through turbid media with high scattering coefficient (μ s = 50 cm −1 ) and disclose the physical processes involved in the evolution of Stokes vector. The results show that the components of the Stokes vector can be expressed as the superimposition of the generalized divergence and the generalized curl of the two orthogonal electric field vectors. The components I, Q, and U can be represented as the superimposition of the generalized divergence. The components V can be conveyed as the superimposition of the generalized curl omitting the direction. Further, the depolarization of the linearly polarized light corresponds to the alteration of the generalized divergence, while the depolarization of the circularly polarized light coincides with the variability of the generalized curl omitting the direction. The evolutions of the scattering electric fields arise from the scattering of the particles, followed by the polarization state transition of the incident light and the change of the scattering phase function. Further, the circularly polarized light can preserve the polarization state better than that of the linearly polarized light with an increase of the thickness of the scattering volume.

Depolarization composition of the back-scattered circularly polarized light

Abstract:We consider the origin of unpolarised light resulting from the backscattering of circularly polarized light by random turbid tissue-like disperse medium. We reveal the dynamics of the backscattered fraction of unpolarized light, disclosing its meticulous decomposition into two rigorously polarized components characterized by opposing helicities, with fully defined polarization states. Concurrently, their superposition, driven by multiple scattering within the medium, leads to the appearance of a fraction of linear polarization. We emphasize that in-depth binding of circular polarization memory of light with the helicity flips occurs within the scattering medium, meaning the conservation of spin angular momentum. We anticipate that the results obtained hold significant implications for future studies, particularly in the field of tissue polarimetry and light vortexes.

Enwrapped Perylene Bisimide Enables Room Temperature Polariton Lasing and Photonic Lattices

Abstract:Perylene bisimides (PBIs) are organic dyes with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) close to unity in solution and great thermal and photo-chemical stability. These features alongside the tunability of their solid-state packing arrangement via chemical functionalization make this material class an excellent candidate for exciton-polariton lasing at room temperature. Polariton lasing is well understood in III-V semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures, however, the search for emitter materials for robust and versatile room temperature applications is ongoing. While e.g. perovskites and several organic materials have been identified to support polariton lasing, many of these materials lack tunability and long-term stability under ambient conditions. Here, we fabricate optical microcavities using a strongly enwrapped PBI chromophore with prevailing monomer-like absorption and emission properties in the solid state. Voluminous bay-substituents prevent stacking induced PLQY-quenching, thereby enabling polariton lasing at room temperature. Additionally, photonic confinement in single hemispheric resonators is demonstrated leading to localized polaritonic modes with discrete energies, as well as optical lattices revealing distinct polaritonic band-structures. Due to the possibility of tunable properties by the precise control of the solid-state packing arrangement of PBI emitters, our results pave the way for polarization-dependent light-matter coupling, including topological photonic effects within oriented crystalline thin-film microcavity structures.

Polarization evolution on the higher-order Poincaré sphere via photonic Dirac points

Abstract:In this work, we report a general reflection model to describe the reflected behaviors of a Gaussian beam near photonic Dirac point at the optical interface. With spin polarized electromagnetic waves strikes near the single Dirac point on Dirac material interface, vortical phase distribution and spin inversion are demonstrated for reflected state, and we further develop a higher-order Poincaré sphere to describe the evolution of polarization states. It is possible to generate any desired Poincaré vortex beam on the sphere by modulating the incident polarization state of light. Moreover, we discuss the case of normal incidence around two adjacent Dirac points, reflection spectrum involves a couple of spin flip vortices corresponding to two points with the corresponding topological invariants, which are consistent with the Berry curvature and topological charge. These results can be extended to similar hyperbolic metamaterials with degenerate point, and inspire a different perspective for manipulating polarized vortex beam with photonic Dirac point. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.104.013504 ©2021 American Physical Society
