Abstract:We present studies on the linear polarized diffuse backscattering from turbid media by means of Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. A novel experimental setup using a simplified imaging system to record the polarized diffuse backscattering (PDB) patterns is reported. A method of Fourier analysis is introduced to extract the holistic characteristic of the PDB patterns. Abstract:A Monte Carlo simulation model for the diffuse backscattering of the polarized light from the poly-disperse highly dense media is developed and the effective free pathlength distribution function of the poly-disperse system is given. Simulation is conducted for the mono-disperse polystyrene suspensions with particle sizes of radii 50 and 550nm, and poly-disperse suspensions containing the above two particles with the volume fraction ratios of 4:1, 1:1 and 1:4. The relation between the spatial intensity variations of the light diffuse backscattering pattern and the volume fraction ratio of the poly-disperse suspensions is analyzed qualitatively.
Scattering and Absorption of Light by Ice Particles: Solution by a New Physical-Geometric Optics Hybrid Method

Abstract:A new physical-geometric optics hybrid (PGOH) method is developed to compute the scattering and absorption properties of ice particles. This method is suitable for studying the optical properties of ice particles with arbitrary orientations, complex refractive indices (i.e., particles with significant absorption), and size parameters (proportional to the ratio of particle size to incident wavelength) larger than ∼20, and includes consideration of the edge effects necessary for accurate determination of the extinction and absorption efficiencies. Light beams with polygon-shaped cross sections propagate within a particle and are traced by using a beam-splitting technique. The electric field associated with a beam is calculated using a beam-tracing process in which the amplitude and phase variations over the wavefront of the localized wave associated with the beam are considered analytically. The geometric-optics near field for each ray is obtained, and the single-scattering properties of particles are calculated from electromagnetic integral equations. The present method does not assume additional physical simplifications and approximations, except for geometric optics principles, and may be regarded as a “benchmark” within the framework of the geometric optics approach. The computational time is on the order of seconds for a single-orientation simulation and is essentially independent of the size parameter. The single-scattering properties of oriented hexagonal ice particles (ice plates and hexagons) are presented. The numerical results are compared with those computed from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method.

Abstract:The pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) and the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) are two popular and robust methods for the numerical simulation of dielectric particle light scattering. The present study compares the numerical performances of the two methods in the computation of the single-scattering properties of homogeneous dielectric spheres and spheroids for which the exact solutions can be obtained from the Lorenz-Mie theory and the T-matrix theory. The accuracy criteria for the extinction efficiency and the phase function are prescribed to be the same for the PSTD and DDA in order that the computational time can be compared in a fair manner. The computational efficiency and applicability of the two methods are each shown to depend on both the size parameter and the refractive index of the scattering particle. For a small refractive index, a critical size parameter, which decreases from 80 to 30 as the refractive index increases from 1.2 to 1.4, exists below which the DDA outperforms the PSTD. For large refractive indices (>1.4), the PSTD is more efficient than the DDA for a wide size parameter range and has a larger region of applicability. Furthermore, the accuracy shown by the two methods in the computation of backscatter, linear polarization, and asymmetry factor is comparable. The comparison was extended to include spheroids with typical refractive indices of ice and dust and similar conclusions were drawn. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
Analysis Methods for Polarization State and Energy Transmission of Rays Propagating in Optical Systems

Abstract:Polarization state of only completely polarized light can be analyzed by some software, ZEMAX for example. Based on principles of geometrical optics, novel descriptions of the light with different polarization state are provided in this paper. Differential calculus is well used for saving the polarization state and amplitudes of sampling rays when ray tracing. The polarization state changes are analyzed in terms of several typical circumstances, such as Brewster incidence, total reflection. Natural light and partially polarized light are discussed as an important aspect. Further more, a computing method including composition and decomposition of sampling rays at each surface is also set up to analyze the energy transmission of the rays for optical systems. Adopting these analysis methods mentioned, not only the polarization state changes of the incident rays can be obtained, but also the energy distributions can be calculated. Since the energy distributions are obtained, the surface with the most energy loss will be found in the optical system. The energy value and polarization state of light reaching the image surface will also be available. These analysis methods are very helpful for designing or analyzing optical systems, such as analyzing the energy of stray light in high power optical systems, researching the influences of optical surfaces to rays' polarization state in polarization imaging systems and so on.

Abstract:With the forthcoming release of high precision polarization measurements, such as from the Planck satellite, it becomes critical to evaluate the performance of estimators for the polarization fraction and angle. These two physical quantities suffer from a well-known bias in the presence of measurement noise, as has been described in part I of this series. In this paper, part II of the series, we explore the extent to which various estimators may correct the bias. Traditional frequentist estimators of the polarization fraction are compared with two recent estimators: one inspired by a Bayesian analysis and a second following an asymptotic method. We investigate the sensitivity of these estimators to the asymmetry of the covariance matrix which may vary over large datasets. We present for the first time a comparison among polarization angle estimators, and evaluate the statistical bias on the angle that appears when the covariance matrix exhibits effective ellipticity. We also address the question of the accuracy of the polarization fraction and angle uncertainty estimators. The methods linked to the credible intervals and to the variance estimates are tested against the robust confidence interval method. From this pool of estimators, we build recipes adapted to different use-cases: build a mask, compute large maps, and deal with low S/N data. More generally, we show that the traditional estimators suffer from discontinuous distributions at low S/N, while the asymptotic and Bayesian methods do not. Attention is given to the shape of the output distribution of the estimators, and is compared with a Gaussian. In this regard, the new asymptotic method presents the best performance, while the Bayesian output distribution is shown to be strongly asymmetric with a sharp cut at low S/N.Finally, we present an optimization of the estimator derived from the Bayesian analysis using adapted priors.

Abstract:Light beams with spatially variant states of polarization (SOPs) have attracted increasing interest recently because their vector nature brings unique perspectives to optics and photonics. Nevertheless, their applications are challenged when transposed to scattering media, because of the inherent depolarization effects arising from multiple scattering. Wavefront shaping techniques are expected to confront these challenges; however, shaping spatially variant SOPs in addition to amplitude and phase of light through scattering media has not been explored yet. Here, we present a general framework based on the vector transmission matrix to simultaneously tailor these properties. Further, we demonstrate its use in producing multiple focal spots and structured light beams with spatially variant SOPs behind the scattering media, which is confirmed by simulations. As a particular application, by encoding information into light's spatially distributed SOPs, we are able to directly encrypt multiplexed grayscale images into a single laser beam behind a scattering medium. Our work is expected to find potential applications such as optical imaging in deep tissues, optical encryption, and communication. Published by AIP Publishing.

Symmetry Protected Invariant Scattering Properties for Arbitrary Polarizations

Abstract:Polarization independent Mie scattering of building blocks is foundational for constructions of optical systems with robust functionalities. Conventional studies for such polarization independence are generally restricted to special states of either linear or circular polarizations, widely neglecting elliptically-polarized states that are generically present in realistic applications. Here we present a comprehensive recipe to achieve invariant scattering properties (including extinction, scattering and absorption) for arbitrary polarizations, requiring only rotation symmetry and absence of optical activities. It is discovered that sole rotation symmetries can effectively decouple the two scattering channels that originate from the incident circularly polarized waves of opposite handedness, leading to invariance of all scattering properties for any polarizations on the same latitude circle of the Poincaré sphere. Further incorporations of extra inversion or mirror symmetries would eliminate the optical activities and thus ensure scattering property invariance for arbitrary polarizations. In sharp contrast to previous investigations that rely heavily on complicated algebraic formulas, our arguments are fully intuitive and geometric, bringing to surface the essential physical principles rather than obscuring them. The all-polarization invariance we reveal is induced by discrete spatial symmetries of the scattering configurations, underlying which there are functioning laws of reciprocity and conservation of parity and helicity. This symmetry-protected intrinsic invariance is robust against any symmetry-preserving perturbations, which may render extra flexibilities for designing optical devices with stable functionalities.

Abstract:While polarization sensing is vital in many areas of research, with applications spanning from microscopy to aerospace, traditional approaches are limited by method-related error amplification, accumulation, and pre-processing steps, constraining the performance of single-shot polarimetry. Here, we propose a measurement paradigm that circumvents these limitations, based on the use of a universal full Poincare generator to map all polarization analyzer states into a single vectorially structured light field. All vector components are analyzed in a single shot, extracting the vectorial state through inference from a physical model of the resulting image, providing a single-step sensing procedure. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we use a common graded index (GRIN) optic as our mapping device and show mean errors of <1% for each vector component. Our work paves the way for next-generation polarimetry, impacting a wide variety of applications that rely on vector measurement. Abstract:Polarimetric scattering from inhomogeneous random media of non-spherical scatterers under a pulse incidence is studied. The time-dependent Muller matrix solution of the vector radiative transfer for layered random media is derived. Co-polarized and cross-polarized bistatic and back-scattering are numerically calculated. The shape and intensity of polarized echoes depict well the inhomogeneous fraction profile of random scatterers. Its functional dependence upon the fraction profile, layer thickness, and other parameters are discussed. This technique is applicable to the reconstruction of inhomogeneous fraction profile and inversion of the media thickness.

Abstract:We present a Monte Carlo simulation program for the propagation of polarized photons in an anisotropic scattering model consisting of poly-dispersed spherical and infinite long cylindrical scatterers. The cylinders are aligned following a Gaussian distribution. Densities and sizes of the spherical and cylindrical scatterers, as well as the orientation of the cylinders are variables for the simulation of different anisotropic media. The good agreement between the simulation and experimental results of polarization imaging confirms the validity of the polarization-dependent Monte Carlo simulation program.

Abstract:Polarization parameters contain rich information on the micro- and macro-structure of scattering media. However, many of these parameters are sensitive to the spatial orientation of anisotropic media, and may not effectively reveal the microstructural information. In this paper, we take polarization images of different textile samples at different azimuth angles. The results demonstrate that the rotation insensitive polarization parameters from rotating linear polarization imaging and Mueller matrix transformation methods can be used to distinguish the characteristic features of different textile samples. Further examinations using both experiments and Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the residue rotation dependence in these polarization parameters is due to the oblique incidence illumination. This study shows that such rotation independent parameters are potentially capable of quantitatively classifying anisotropic samples, such as textiles or biological tissues.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simplified measurement called single-incidence polarimetry measurement (SPM) to obtain optical characteristics such as di-attenuationP, variation of phase difference Δ and depolarization index d on material surface. Compared with tradition Mueller matrix polarimetry which needs multiple (at least 4) Stokes vectors as incidences in experiments, SPM only needs single polarized light as incidence, which simplifies experimental procedures tremendously and increases experimental efficiency. In addition, SPM is suitable for complicated materials such as thick lump samples, uneven surfaces, powder and liquid which are not available on traditional ellipsometers, e.g., the variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometer (VASE) produced by J. A. Woollam Company. The objectivity and lower complexity of SPM are verified by the contrast experiments with Mueller matrix polarimetry. The advantage that SPM is more suitable for complicated experimental condition is demonstrated by the contrast experiments with VASE. All the analyses and discussions are realized by the root mean squared error (RMSE) between referenced values and experimental results. In conclusion, SPM can realize low-cost and easy-assembled measurements on complicated and depolarized surfaces rather than obtaining higher precision data on smooth and thin surfaces. In the aspect of efficiency and convenience, SPM is useful to analyze optical characteristics qualitatively.

Abstract:In this study, the propagation of polarized light in anisotropic media composed of prolate ellipsoids oriented in the same direction is investigated. We proposed a DDA-Monte Carlo combined algorithm to solve the radiative transfer problem. By comparisons of backscattering two-dimensional images of Mueller matrix, the results show that, the changing information of aspect ratio and orientation of ellipsoidal scatterers can be well encoded in image-based Mueller matrix. Moreover, the effect of aspect ratio and orientation on diattenuation, retardance, depolarization and linear retardance are demonstrated by decomposing the Mueller matrix. Furthermore, the impact of aspect ratio on the rate of depolarization of linearly and circularly polarized light with optical thickness has been construed. This study has proved that structural anisotropy decelerates the depolarization rate of scattering light and traditional diffusion theory cannot be used to solve polarized light transport in anisotropic media. Our study can promote a further research on the physics of radiative transfer in anisotropic media. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Determining the Liquid Light Scattering Cross Section and Depolarization Spectra Using Polarized Resonance Synchronous Spectroscopy

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering is a universal material property because all materials have nonzero polarizability. Reliable quantification of the material light scattering cross section in the liquid phase and its depolarization spectra is, however, challenging due to a host of sample and instrument issues. Using the recently developed polarized resonance synchronous spectroscopic method, we reported the light scattering cross section and depolarization spectra measured for a total of 29 liquids including water, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, dimethylformamide, carbon disulfide, dimethyl sulfoxide, hexane and two hexane isomers (3-methylpentane and 2,3-dimethylbutane), tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexane, acetonitrile, pyridine, chloromethanes including di-, tri, tetrachloromethane, acetone, benzene and eight benzene derivatives (toluene, fluorobenzene, 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-difluorobenzene, chlorobenzene, 1,2- and 1,3-dichlorobenzene, and nitrobenzene). The solvent light scattering depolarization is wavelength-independent for the model solvents, and it varies from 0.023 ± 0.011 for CCl4 to 0.619 ± 0.022 for nitrobenzene. The light scattering cross-section spectra can be approximated with the function of σ(λ) = αλ-4 with the α value varying from 7.2 ± 0.2 × 10-45 cm6 for water to a maximum of 8.5 ± 0.6 × 10-43 cm6 for nitrobenzene. Structural isomerization has no significant effect on either the depolarization or the scattering cross sections for both hexanes and difluorobenzene isomers. This work represents the most comprehensive experimental study on liquid light scattering features. The insight from this work should be important for understanding the correlation between the material structure and optical properties. The described method can be readily implemented by researchers with access to conventional spectrofluorometers equipped with excitation and detection polarizers.
Polarized Radiative Transfer Simulations: A Tutorial Review and Upgrades of the Vector Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer Computational Tool

Abstract:We present an overview and several important upgrades to the Vector Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer (VDISORT) code. VDISORT is a polarized (vector) radiative transfer code that can be applied to a wide range of research problems including the Earth’s atmosphere and ocean system. First, a solution is developed to the complex algebraic eigenvalue problem resulting when the b2 component of the Stokes scattering matrix is non-zero. This solution is needed to compute the V component of the Stokes vector I=[I∥,I⊥,U,V]T. Second, a significant improvement in computational efficiency is obtained by reducing the dimension of the algebraic eigenvalue by a factor of 2 resulting in a speed increase of about 23 = 8. Third, an important upgrade of the VDISORT code is obtained by developing and implementing a method to enable output at arbitrary polar angles by the integration of the source function (ISF) method for partially reflecting Lambertian as well as general non-Lambertian surfaces. Fourth, a pseudo-spherical treatment has been implemented to provide important corrections for Earth curvature effects at near horizontal solar zenith and observation (viewing) polar angles. Fifth, a post-processing single-scattering correction procedure has been developed to enhance the accuracy and speed for strongly forward-peaked scattering. With these significant improvements the results from the upgraded version of the VDISORT code match published benchmark results for Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering, and scattering by non-spherical cirrus particles. The performance of VDISORT for a polarized incident beam source is equally satisfactory. The VDISORT vector radiative transfer code is made public and freely available for use by the growing polarimetric research community including the space-borne polarimeters on the future NASA PACE and AOS missions.

Abstract:The polarized light scattered by the surface of a material contains information that can be used to describe the properties of the surface. Polarized Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is one of the most important factors used to represent the property of the surface. It uses a 4x4 matrix (Mueller matrix) to describe the properties of the light scattered from the surface. A polarized BRDF model based on the micro-facet theory is used in the numerical simulation The optical constant parameters contained in the model is derived from the experimental data through genetic algorithm. Comparison between the model calculation and the experimental data shows that this model agrees well with the experimental data, and can be used in the future work.
Extracting Superficial Scattering by Q-Sensing Technique

Abstract:Optical properties determine how light interacts with biological tissues. The current methods for measuring these optical properties are influenced by both deep and superficial skin layers. Polarization-based methods have been proposed in order to determine the influence of deep layer scattering. Polarized light allows for the separation of ballistic photons from diffuse ones, enhancing image contrast and resolution while providing additional tissue information. The Q-sensing technique captures co-polarized I ∥ $$ \left({I}_{\parallel}\right) $$ and cross-polarized I ⊥ $$ \left({I}_{\perp}\right) $$ signals, making it possible to isolate the superficial scattering. However, the random structure of tissues leads to rapid depolarization of the polarized light. Detecting where the light becomes depolarized aids in sensing abnormalities within the tissues. Hence, this research focuses on identifying where depolarization occurs within the tissue. Tissue-mimicking phantoms, simulating the optical properties of biological tissues, are created to measure depolarization at various thicknesses. Experimental findings are validated with a Monte Carlo simulation, modeling polarized light behavior through the polydisperse tissue (as the tissue scatterers are heterogeneous in size). Additionally, the research demonstrates how polarized light can extract the optical properties of the medium.
