Abstract:Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2013} solved the equivalence problem for a family of scalar second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with cubic nonlinearity in the first-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y''=f(x,y,y')$ which is not cubic in the first-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under an arbitrary point equivalence transformations. All fifth order differential invariants and the invariant differentiation operators are determined. As an application, invariant description of all the canonical forms in the complex plane for second-order ODEs $y''=f(x,y,y')$ where both of the two Tress\'e relative invariants are non-zero is provided.

Abstract:In this paper we study $3^{\mathrm{rd}}$ order (system of) PDEs in two independent variables $x,y$ and one unknown function $u$ that are invariant with respect to the group of affine transformation $\mathrm{Aff}(3)$ of $\mathbb{R}^3=\{(x,y,u)\}$. After proving their relationship with the Fubini-Pick invariant, we derive the aforementioned PDEs by using a general method introduced in [D.V. Alekseevsky, J. Gutt, G. Manno, and G. Moreno: A general method to construct invariant {PDEs} on homogeneous manifolds. Communications in Contemporary Mathematics (2021)], which sheds light on some of their geometrical properties.

For every type the complete list of nonequivalent equations is issued. As the examples the equivalence problem for the Painleve II equation, Painleve III equation with three zero parameters, Emden equations and for some other equations is solved.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:Transformations of differential equations to other equivalent equations play a central role in many routines for solving intricate equations. A class of differential equations that are particularly amenable to solution techniques based on such transformations is the class of linearisable second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). There are various characterisations of such ODEs. We exploit a particular characterisation and the expanded Lie group method to construct a generic solution for all linearisable second-order ODEs. The general solution of any given equation from this class is then easily obtainable from the generic solution through a point transformation constructed using only two suitably chosen symmetries of the equation. We illustrate the approach with three examples.

Abstract:For a system of partial differential equations that has an extended Kovalevskaya form, a reduction procedure is presented that allows one to use a local (point, contact, or higher) symmetry of a system and a symmetry-invariant conservation law to algorithmically calculate constants of motion holding for symmetry-invariant solutions. Several examples including cases of point and higher symmetry invariance are presented and discussed. An implementation of the algorithm in Maple is provided.

Analysis of PDEs

Abstract:We apply a novel method for the equivalence group and its infinitesimal generators to the investigation of invariants of linear ordinary differential equations. First, a comparative study of this method is illustrated by an example. Next, the method is used to obtain the invariants of low order linear ordinary differential equations, and the structure invariance group for an arbitrary order of these equations. Other properties of these equations are also discussed, including the exact number of their invariants.

Abstract:Within the framework of inverse Lie problem, we give some non-trivial examples of coupled Lie remarkable equations, \textit{i.e.}, classes of differential equations that are in correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we determine hierarchies of second order partial differential equations uniquely characterized by affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, and a system of two third order partial differential equations in two independent variables uniquely determined by the Lie algebra of projective transformations of $\mathbb{R}^4$.

Abstract:A couple of applications of Bäcklund transformations in the study of nonlinear evolution equations is here given. Specifically, we are concerned about third order nonlinear evolution equations. Our attention is focussed on one side, on proving a new invariance admitted by a third order nonlinear evolution equation and, on the other one, on the construction of solutions. Indeed, via Bäcklund transformations, a {\it Bäcklund chart}, connecting Abelian as well as non Abelian equations can be constructed. The importance of such a net of links is twofold since it indicates invariances as well as allows to construct solutions admitted by the nonlinear evolution equations it relates. The present study refers to third order nonlinear evolution equations of KdV type. On the basis of the Abelian wide Bäcklund chart which connects various different third order nonlinear evolution equations an invariance admitted by the {\it Korteweg-deVries interacting soliton} (int.sol.KdV) equation is obtained and a related new explicit solution is constructed. Then, the corresponding non-Abelian {\it Bäcklund chart}, shows how to construct matrix solutions of the mKdV equations: some recently obtained solutions are reconsidered.

On pleated singular points of first order implicit differential equations

Abstract:We study phase portraits of a first order implicit differential equation in a neighborhood of its pleated singular point that is a non-degenerate singular point of the lifted field. Although there is no a visible local classification of implicit differential equations at pleated singular points (even in the topological category), we show that there exist only six essentially different phase portraits, which are presented.

Abstract:New cases of integrable seventh-order dynamical systems that are homogeneous with respect to some of the variables are presented, in which a system on the tangent bundle of a three-dimensional manifold can be distinguished. In this case, the force field is divided into an internal (conservative) and an external component, which has dissipation of different signs. The external field is introduced using some unimodular transformation and generalizes previously considered fields. Complete sets of both first integrals and invariant differential forms are given.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct invariant manifolds for a coupled system, consisting of a parabolic equation and a second-order ordinary differential equation, set on T3$$\mathbb {T}^3$$ and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Notably, the “spectral gap condition" does not hold for the system under consideration, leading to the use of the spatial averaging principle, together with the graph transform method. This approach facilitates the construction of the relevant invariant manifold, characterized by attributes such as Lipschitz continuity, local invariance, infinite dimensionality, and exponential tracking, thus mirroring the properties traditionally associated with a classical global manifold.

Abstract:Using the only admissible rank-two realisations of the Lie algebra of the affine group in one dimension in terms of the Lie algebra of Lie symmetries of the Ermakov-Pinney (EP) equation, some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations solvable by reduction method are constructed. One class includes the standard EP equation as a special case. A new EP equation with a perturbed potential but admitting the same solution formula as EP itself arises. The solution of the dissipative EP equation is also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a family of variable-coefficient fifth-order KdV equations has been considered. By using an infinitesimal method based on the determination of the equivalence group, differential invariants and invariant equations are obtained. Invariants provide an alternative way to find equations from the family which may be equivalent to a specific subclass of the same family and the invertible transformation which maps both equivalent equations. Here, differential invariants are applied to obtain exact solutions.

Abstract:This work aims to investigate the well-posedness and the existence of ergodic invariant measures for a class of third grade fluid equations in bounded domain $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d,d=2,3,$ in the presence of a multiplicative noise. First, we show the existence of a martingale solution by coupling a stochastic compactness and monotonicity arguments. Then, we prove a stabilty result, which gives the pathwise uniqueness of the solution and therefore the existence of strong probabilistic solution. Secondly, we use the stability result to show that the associated semigroup is Feller and by using "Krylov-Bogoliubov Theorem" we get the existence of an invariant probability measure. Finally, we show that all the invariant measures are concentrated on a compact subset of $L^2$, which leads to the existence of an ergodic invariant measure.
