Abstract:The principle of design of polarization band_pass filters used for wavelength d ivision multiplexing systems is presented. The design method is based on the con cept of thin_film photonic crystal superlattice. Two kinds of design are put for ward. One of them is to construct by superposition of two photonic crystals; and the other is to insert a new photonic crystal into the middle of a photonic cr ystal, so that there are in effect three photonic crystals. Such band_pass filte rs have excellent optical properties with p_polarization transmittance and s_pol arization reflectance. The characteristics of the filters, including peak transm ittance, half_band width and rejection are discussed.

Abstract:A reconfigurable optical bandpass filter with flat-top transmission line shape and narrow bandwidth in nanometer scale is designed and theoretically analyzed. The filter is composed of two coupling prisms and a sandwiched planar optical waveguide (POW) which is comprised of 5 layers of uniform materials with an air gap in the center. Numerical simulations demonstrate that a single passband in the visible spectrum with flat top and completely null sideband can be obtained. The central wavelength of the passband can be tuned by about ±14 nm via a ±1.78° change of the incident angle while the high transmittance and flatness of the band top can always be maintained by almost linearly adjusting the thickness of the central air layer in the POW at the same time. During the adjustment process, the bandwidth changes from 0.92 to 2.43 nm. The simple structure and flexibility of the filter could facilitate its applications in various optical fields.

Abstract:Two-step guided mode resonance in prism pair loaded planar optical waveguide (POW) is theoretically analyzed with the rigorous coupled wave analysis method. The proposed structural configuration is composed of a multi-layered POW with two cladding prisms. Analytical expressions for reflectance and transmittance in the two prisms are derived. It is shown that at the resonant angle, symmetric passband of 100% transmittance with nano/sub-nanometer bandwidth at the central wavelength can be realized in the proposed structure with single/multi-mode(s) optical waveguide layers. This type of narrow bandpass filter may find applications in optical communications, laser systems, spectroscopies, and various types of sensing.

Abstract:An optical bandpass filter structure of multiple bands in the visible spectrum with bandwidths in picometer scale (full width at half maximum, FWHM) is theoretically analyzed. The filter is in a form of prism pair coupled planar optical waveguide. For each individual guided mode, multiple pass-bands are obtainable in violet, green, and red regions of the visible spectrum, respectively. High efficiencies and symmetric band shape with flat null sideband can be obtained with practical material dispersion and loss taken into account. The central wavelength of each band can also be angularly tuned within a certain range with little influence on the efficiency or bandwidth. This kind of ultra-narrow bandpass optical filter can be used in high resolution spectroscopies, laser technologies, optical communications, and optical sensing. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This letter proposes an electrically controlled non-polarizing optical bandpass filter based on prism coupled planar optical waveguide (POW) structure that incorporates a liquid crystal layer, which works in the electrically controlled birefringent (ECB) mode and makes the central wavelength for TM passband tunable. The measured passband of TM wave, tuned from 526 nm to 599 nm, overlaps with that of the TE wave at 582 nm under driving voltage of about 3.70 V.

Abstract:An incoherent-gain prism coupler that can lead to enhanced total reflection is suggested by taking full advantage of pumped electric-dipole allowed transition that leads to gain-assisted negative permittivity. The tunable reflection spectrum of the prism coupler is quite sensitive to frequency detuning (e.g., 10(7) times that in conventional metal-substrate prism couplers) since the incoherent-gain optical response presented here results from atomic dipole-allowed transition. The present gain-assisted prism coupler, which can exhibit an unusual effect of dispersion-sensitive tunable reflection enhancement, has potential applications in design of new quantum optical and photonic devices, e.g., frequency-sensitive optical switches and photonic transistors.

Abstract:A novel tunable ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) with narrow notched band based on photonic method is proposed. The filter is mainly composed of an electrooptical phase modulator (EOPM) and a phase shift fiber Bragg grating (FBG). As the FBG serves as a tilt filter with limited bandwidth and a p-shift, the optical phase-modulation to intensity-modulation conversion induced by the reflection of the FBG generates a bandpass radio-frequency response with narrow notched band. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Based on second-order nonlinearity, we present a tunable optical bandpass filter at c-band by introducing a back quasiphase-matching technique with a nanostructured named multiple resonator waveguide. Two injecting forward lights and one backward propagating light interact with difference frequency generation. At that juncture, the transmission of the forward signal can be modulated via changing the forward control power. As a result, a tunable optical bandpass filter with multiple flat-top transmit bands of the forward signal can be formed in the waveguide. Abstract:We propose a new kind of reconfigurable topological valley photonic crystal (TVPC), and a novel topological waveguide can be formed by constructing a domain wall between two TVPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. The topological waveguide mode in the composite TVPC has large group refractive index. A topologically protected coupled waveguide cavity system is then designed by introducing a hexagonal ring cavity at the center of the straight domain wall of a combined TVPC, in which a narrow plasmon induced transparency window rises at 3.8848 GHz with a Q-factor of 1387 and a maximum group refractive index as high as 186. We propose a notch filter with a resonant frequency of 3.8852 GHz and a very high Q-factor of 10224. By changing the refractive index of liquid crystals via an external voltage applied between two parallel metal plates, the filter can be switched between band-pass and band-stop based on the reconfigurable topological interface state.

Abstract:An electro-optical tunable filter comprised of two paralleled identical long-period waveguide gratings is proposed in this paper. The filter has one input port and two separate output ports, outputting band-pass and band-rejection light respectively. Using poled electro-optical polymer material to fabricate its waveguide cores enable the filter’s tuning speed to approach nanosecond order. With the aid of long-period waveguide gratings, the tuning range of the filter is Λ times larger than the conventional electro-optical filters. We built up a model to design and simulate the proposed tunable optical filter. We investigate the relationship between the parameters of the long-period waveguide grating and the characteristics of the tunable filter, such as tuning range and FWHM. The simulation results show that the tunable optical filter can realize high-speed tuning in the wavelength range of 1530 nm to 1560 nm, and the FWHM width can reach 0.8 nm. Compared with the conventional optical filters, the results show that a high-speed widely tunable optical filter with narrow pass band can be achieved.

Abstract:A multichannel double-polarization bandpass optical filter, which has the performance of variable channel interval, is theoretically proposed. The filter consists of a stack of two one-dimensional photonic crystals (1D PCs). Based on the resonant couple of evanescent waves localized at the interfaces between neighboring layers, the linear transmission properties of the filter are numerically simulated by the transfer matrix method. The simulation results show that channel number of the filter can be changed by varying the thickness of the middle layer in the centrosymmetric 1D PC structure, while the bandwidth and wavelength of the channel can be adjusted by the incident angle of light. This work may be helpful in designing multichannel double-polarization bandpass optical filter in optical communication systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate the promising configurations that permit very narrow spectral filtering. The waveguide filter consists of a glass slab with an anomalous thickness of about 500 mu m, Which is sandwiched between two pre-coated metal films. By using the free-space coupling technique, a polarization-insensitive and tunable notch filter with a spectral bandwidth as narrow as 0.08 nm has been obtained due to the excitation of ultrahigh-order modes of the symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide.

Abstract:We derive the required optical properties of a prism for coupling light achromatically into a planar waveguide, Efficient coupling over a 110 nm spectral bandwidth was experimentally demonstrated with a prism-coupler designed to match the dispersion of a particular waveguide. The design tools described here should be useful in the implementation of broadband attenuated total reflection spectroscopy in the waveguide regime to probe ultrathin and very weakly absorbing molecular submonolayers.

Abstract:Dynamically tunable multichannel filter based on plasmon-induced transparencies (PITs) is proposed in a plasmonic waveguide side-coupled to slot and rectangle resonators system at optical communication range. The slot and rectangle resonators in this system can be regarded as radiative or dark resonators as same as the radiative or dark elements in the metamaterial structure with the help of the evanescent coupling. The multiple PIT responses which can enable the realization of nanoscale filter with four channels are originated from the direct near-field coupling and indirect phase couple through a plasmonic waveguide simultaneously. Moreover, the magnitudes and bandwidths of the filter can be efficiently tuned by controlling of the geometric parameters such as the coupling distances and the pump light-induced refractive index change of the Kerr material which is embedded into the metal-dielectric-metal waveguide between the radiative resonators.

Abstract:According to the oblique incidence characteristics of thin film narrowband filter, the stack of 100GHz DWDM four cavities angle-tuned thin film filter has been designed and optimized. The two polarization modes’ central wavelengths of the thin film filter can be centered at the same one in oblique incidence, and it has a stable tuning range of 20nm without the phenomenon of polarization central wavelength separation. Using this kind of angle-tuned thin film filter and the polarization beam-splitters, the tuning range of the angle-tuned thin film filter can be further expanded due to the reason that it can transmit only the s-polarization light. In this paper we also developed a three-port bandpass tunable filter device with new structure, which tuning range can cover the whole C-band and its adjacent channel isolation degree is high. The experiments show that the three-port tunable filter has an effective tuning range of 33nm, and its adjacent channel isolation degree is more than 35dB. It has a bright application opportunity for its flexibility and effective performance.
