Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators play an important role in modern electronic devices. In this work, 0.7Bi(1−x)SmxFeO3–0.3BaTiO3 lead-free piezo-ceramics are fabricated through the rapid thermal quenching technique for enhancing the electric-field-induced strain response. All the ceramic samples own a typical perovskite structure, and the morphotropic phase boundary can be achieved after Sm substitution. Additionally, a high TC of 403 °C and excellent ferroelectricity can be obtained at room temperature for the x = 0.03 composition, together with a large peak-to-peak strain value (∆S = 0.5%). Furthermore, a larger strain value ∆S of 0.45% at 150 °C can also be realized in 0.7Bi0.95Sm0.05FeO3–0.3BaTiO3 ceramic. Our results could further stimulate the investigations on lead-free ceramics for piezoelectric actuator applications.

Abstract:In this work, Ba[Formula: see text]Ca[Formula: see text]Ti[Formula: see text]Zr[Formula: see text]O3 ([Formula: see text]= 0.00–0.25) ceramics were prepared by a solid-state reaction method, and the variation of dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics has been investigated together with the structure evolution. The crystal structure varies from rhombohedral to tetragonal at room-temperature and the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) is determined around [Formula: see text]= [Formula: see text]0.10, where the significantly enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties are achieved. With the increase of Ca content, the system gradually evolves into a relaxor ferroelectric. This work provides useful guidance for future research on lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:To improve densification of the (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Hf0.1Ti0.9)O-3 (BCHT) ceramics prepared via powder injection moulding, MnO2 and Li2CO3 were used as sintering aids. The BCHT ceramics doped with different Mn- and Li-amount prepared by powder injection moulding in which paraffin was used as injection binder, have rather pure perovskite structure with complicated polymorphic ferroelectric phase coexistence. Polyhedral grains combined with nearly round shape grains with increased relative density and larger gains size were obtained at appropriate doping amount, related to the formation of liquid phase during sintering and increased mobility of ions due to the generation of point defects caused by heterovalent cations doping. The Mn- and Li-doped BCHT ceramics are displacement driven ferroelectrics with apparent diffused transition characteristic at different extent, relating to the morphotropic phase boundary composition and the variation of point defects induced by doping. Comparable or surpassing electrical performance was acquired, especially the dielectric breakdown strength was increased due to the improved sinterability. With appropriate doping amount, piezoelectricity larger than 300 pC/N can be obtained in the Mn- and Li-doped BCHT ceramics poled under low electric field.

Abstract:[(Ba0.85Ca0.15)(1-x)Dy-x](Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 (x mol% Dy-BCZT, x = 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 3 mol%) multifunctional lead-free ceramics were prepared by traditional solid-state reaction method, where the influence of Dy doping amount and sintering condition was investigated. All sintered x mol% Dy-BCZT ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure, large density, and high resistivity, which are affected greatly by Dy doping amount and sintering temperature. The phase structure changes from mainly tetragonal phase to pseudo-cubic phase with the increase of Dy doping amount, and presents irregular change on sintering temperature. Most samples have excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and stain, piezoelectric and fluorescent properties, which can be improved by changing Dy doping amount and tailoring sintering condition. Maximum piezoelectric-fluorescent coupling effect is obtained by selecting composition, optimizing Dy doping amount, and tailoring sintering condition due to morphotropic phase boundary effect and concentration quenching effect, which provides broad application prospect in the field of optoelectronics.

Abstract:[(Ba1-xCax)(0.995)Eu-0.005](Ti1-yHfy)O-3 (B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu) lead-free ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid-state method, in which the effects of sintering temperature and the ratios of Ba/Ca and Ti/Hf cations around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) on the electrical and fluorescent properties were explored. Rather pure perovskite structure B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics with densified microstructure and high density are obtained, which locate around the MPB region and show dependency on compositions and sintering conditions. Complex ferroelectric characteristic is confirmed by dielectric performance measurement and dielectric behavior fitting. Enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties can be attributed to the donor doping characteristic induced by Eu doping, which engenders donor point defects Eu-Ba/Ca*. Extremum piezo-luminescence figure of merit FPC-PLI appears in the sintered B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics, in which the 1450 degrees C sintered [(Ba0.86Ca0.14)(0.995)Eu-0.005](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O-3 ceramics exhibit the most outstanding multi-functional performance. The high-temperature conductance mechanism of the B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics can be attributed to the oxygen vacancies produced by the evaporation of cations during sintering process. Abstract:Ba4Sm2FexTi4-2xNb6+xO30 (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) ceramics were prepared by standard solid-state reaction, and the filled tungsten bronze phase with space group P4bm was confirmed for all compositions. Systematic investigation of the Fe-substitution effects on dielectric, ferroelectric as well as magnetic properties was conducted. As the value of x increased, the Curie temperature (T-c) shifted from 562 K to 411 K, which was consistent with the DSC results. The coercive field (E-c) also decreased monotonously from 90 kV/cm (x = 0) to 20 kV/cm (x = 2), suggesting that the substitution of Fe promoted the ferroelectric domain switching. Compared with Ba4Sm2Ti4Nb6O30 (x = 0), simultaneously enhanced ferroelectric and magnetic properties were realized for x = 1, 1.5 and 2. Abstract:Dy-doped (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 ([(Ba0.85Ca0.15)0.99Dy0.01](Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3, 0.01Dy-BCZT) lead-free multi-functional ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state sintering method, in which the effects of ceramic processing conditions were studied by structural analysis and performance characterization. The sintered 0.01Dy-BCZT ceramics have pure perovskite phase with composition near morphotropic phase boundary alongside apparent tetragonal distortion, high density and densified micro-morphology obtained via tailoring calcination and sintering temperatures. High resistivity, excellent dielectric performance and piezoelectricity were acquired, which were affected greatly by ceramic processing conditions. All samples exhibit excellent ferroelectric and strain properties, which approach intrinsic physical performance and have little dependency on ceramic processing conditions. Appearance of a strong broad emission peak, centred at similar to 442 nm, is related to the 4F9/2 -> 6H15/2 electron transition. Strong piezoelectric-fluorescent coupling effect was produced due to adding Dy and using BCZT piezoelectric matrix, which provides a promising choice in optoelectronic application field.

Abstract:(Na0.88K0.12)0.5Bi0.5TiO3 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics doped with CeO2(0～1.0wt%)andSb2O3 (0～0.6wt%) were prepared by conventional ceramics preparation technique. The crystal structures ofthe samples were studied by XRD. The dielectric, piezoelectric properties and the resonance frequencytemperature coefficient were measured and analyzed. The results indicate that all compositions show thecharacteristics of rhombohedral perovskite structure solid states. The piezoelectric constant, dielectricconstant and dielectric loss of the piezoelectric ceramics increase with an appropriate amount of dopant,however, the planar electromechanical coupling factor decreases. The frequency temperature stability of thepiezoelectric ceramics is improved with the present of CeO2 and Sb2O3.

Abstract:Lead-free (Ba1−xCax)(Ti0.94Sn0.06)O3 (BCST) (x=0.01–0.04) ceramics were prepared using a solid-state reaction technique. The effects of Ca content on the phase structure and electrical properties of the BCST ceramics were investigated. High piezoelectric coefficient of d33=440pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling factor of kp=45% and dielectric constant ɛr=6900 were obtained for the samples at x=0.03. At room temperature, a polymorphic phase transition (PPT) from orthorhombic phase to tetragonal phase was identified in the composition range of 0.02<x<0.04.

Abstract:Lead-free ceramics Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O-3 (X = 0.02-0.2) were prepared using a solid-state reaction technique. The structural and electrical properties were systemically investigated. Crystalline structures and microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM) at room temperature. All the samples possess pure perovskite structure. A small amount of Zr content has great effect on the microstructure of Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O-3 ceramics. The homogeneous microstructure with grain size about 30 mu m is obtained for the sample at x = 0.05. The phase transitions merge together in one peak for the samples at x = 0.10 and the highest dielectric constant 15900 is obtained for the sample at x = 0.15. The Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O-3 ceramics at x=0.05 exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties of high d(33) = 208 pC/N, k(p) = 31.5% and Q(m) = 500.
Influences of rare earth site engineering on piezoelectric and electromechanical response of (Ba0.85Ca0.15) (Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 lead-free ceramics

Abstract:The significant deterioration of temperature and fatigue stability are often observed in (Ba0.85Ca0.15) (Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 (BCZT) ceramics, which will cause great resistance in practical applications. We have demonstrated that introducing various rare earth elements (e.g., Dy, Er, Eu, Ho, Pr and Sm) into BCZT ceramics can effectively solve above obstacle. The effects of the doped rare earth element types on the crystal phase, microstructure and resulting properties have been comparatively investigated. The rare earth ions (e.g., Dy, Eu, Ho, Pr and Sm) substituting at the A site are beneficial to acquire the enhanced piezoelectric properties (475–521pC/N) and electromechanical response (505–546 pm/V) for BCZT ceramics, while Er doping generates degraded electrical properties. More importantly, significantly improved temperature stability of piezoelectric properties was achieved in Eu-and Ho-doped BCZT ceramics, featured by less than 8% and 2% variation in the temperature range 20–70 °C. Moreover, excellent fatigue endurance and good frequency dependence were also realized in rare earth element-modified BCZT ceramics, which originated from the decreased defect density due to the reduction of oxygen vacancies. This work will provide a promising way to improve the temperature and fatigue stability of BCZT material without affecting the piezoelectric properties through doping various rare earth elements.

Abstract:Piezoceramics with the composition Pb0.95Sr0.05(Mn1/3Nb2/3)0.05(Zr0.48Ti0.52)0.95O3-xwt%CeO2-ywt%MnCO3 (abbreviated as CexMny) were prepared by the conventional solid-state sintering method. All compositions possessed a phase boundary with coexisting of two phases. The effect of dopants on phase structure, microstructure, ferroelectric performance, electrical properties, and temperature sensitivity were systematically studied. The addition of CeO2 significantly decreased the grain size, while MnCO3 slightly increased the grain size. Ce0.2Mn0.2 exhibited the highest mechanical quality factor Qm and the lowest dielectric loss tan δ, with values of 2064 and 0.0022, respectively. Of particular significance is that the Ce0.2Mn0.2 composition with the aids of LiBiO2 and CuO can be sintered at a relatively low temperature of 900 °C and still exhibit a high Qm of ~ 1613 and extremely low variation (~ 0.16%) of resonance frequency from room temperature to 145 °C. These characteristics suggest its potential for high-power transducer applications.

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of Ba0.70Ca0.30Ti1−xFexO3 (x=0–0.03) have been synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction method. The influence of Fe content on the microstructure, phase transition, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties is investigated systematically. The ceramics with x≤0.02 are diphasic composites of tetragonal Ba0.80Ca0.20TiO3:Fe and orthorhombic Ba0.07Ca0.93TiO3:Fe solid solutions. The tetragonal phase is gradually suppressed as x increases, the ceramic with x=0.03 is found to have diphasic pseudocubic and orthorhombic phases. And the grain size is dependent on Fe content significantly. Introduction of Fe at B-sites improves the densification and decreases the sintering temperature. As x increases from 0 to 0.03, the room temperature relative dielectric permittivity enhances, dielectric loss decreases, and the Curie temperature decreases monotonically from 128°C to 58°C. However, the ferroelectricity enhances slightly and reaches the maximum near x=0.005, and then weakens with increasing x. On the other hand, the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) and the electromechanical coupling coefficient (kp) decrease simultaneously with increasing x, whereas the mechanical quality factor (Qm) increases significantly. The structure–electrical properties relationship is discussed intensively to give more information on (Ba,Ca)TiO3-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Abstract:ABSTRACT By the solid-state reaction route, (Ba0.85Ca0.15-x Cex) (Zr0.1Ti0.9) O3 (BCCeZT) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared. The powder was processed at 1250 ºC for 2 h, and compacted green bodies were then sintered at various sintering temperatures. X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectra confirmed the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase coexistence of x = 0–0.00131. Addition of CeO2 facilitated development of grain sizes greater than 10 μm at low sintering temperatures. The effects of grain size on the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties were studied systematically and it was found that a ~ (10–12) μm grain size is critical for the processing of high-performance lead-free BCCeZT ceramics. CeO2 substitution at the A site may bring down the sintering temperature by about 200 °C without significant loss of properties. The best properties were obtained for x = 0.00131 at a low sintering temperature of 1350°C for 4 h exhibiting d33 = 501 ± 10 pC/N, kp = 38.5 ± 1.92 %, Pr = 12.19 μC/cm2, TC = 108.1°C, and a large strain of 0.14%. These results show that BCCeZT ceramics could be promising candidates for the fabrication of lead-free devices.

Abstract:Phase structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of dense 0.95(Na 0.49 K 0.49 Li 0.02 )(Nb 0.8 Ta 0.2 )O 3 –0.05CaZrO 3 lead-free ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) are reported. Compared with normal sintering, SPS yields a pseudocubic perovskite phase structure with a reduced c/a ratio, enhanced mechanical property and a lower Curie temperature. Large electric-field-induced strain of 0.135 % can be achieved at 4 kV/mm, accompanied with reduced ferroelectricity as evidenced by the slim polarization P ( E ) hysteresis loops and “sprout”-shaped bipolar strain curves. The piezoelectric strain is temperature insensitive in the range from room temperature to about 100 °C, featuring the current material promising potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Barium acetate, Zirconium nitrate and Calcium nitrate, Tetrabutyl titanate and Ce2O3 were used as the starting materials, the 0.68 BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3-0.32 Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 ceramics are prepared by using sol-gel method, and effects of Ce2O3 content on structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.68 BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3-0.32 Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 ceramics are investigated. The phase composition was detected by using X-ray diffraction characterization, and the micrographs were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results show that Ce3+ doped 0.68 BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3-0.32 Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 ceramics have perovskite structure, when the Ce3+ doping amount is 0.006 mol%, the density is the highest, the grain size is the most uniform, and the porosity is the smallest. With the increase of Ce3+ doping content, the dielectric constant and piezoelectric constant of the sample first decreases, then increases and then decreases, meanwhile the dielectric loss first decreases and then increases. Very coincidentally, when the Ce3+ doping amount is 0.04 mol%, the dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant and planar electromechanical coupling factor k(p) are the highest. So the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.68 BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3-0.32 Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 ceramics are optimized when the Ce3+ doping amount is 0.04 mol%.

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.935Ba0.065Ti1−x(Fe0.5Sb0.5)xO3 (BNBT6.5–xFS, x=0.005, 0.010, 0.015, 0.020) were prepared by a conventional solid sintering technique. The effects of B-site doping of (Fe, Sb) on the phase structure, microstructure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of BNBT6.5 ceramics were systematically investigated. Results showed that (Fe, Sb) can completely diffuse in the BNBT6.5 lattice in the all studied components. The addition of (Fe, Sb) destroyed the ferroelectric long-range order, and thus promoted the electric field induced strain response. The maximum electric field-induced strain (Smax=0.37%) with normalized strain (d33*=Smax/Emax=454pm/V) at an applied electric field of 80kV/cm was obtained at x=0.015. Temperature dependent measurements of both polarization and strain from room temperature to 120°C suggested that the origin of the large strain is due to a reversible field-induced ergodic relaxor to ferroelectric phase transformation.
The effect of Li/Ce co‐doping on structural and electrical properties of Sr2−x(Li, Ce)x/2Nb2O7 piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract:As a typical perovskite‐like layered structure (PLS) ceramic, Sr2Nb2O7 (SNO) possesses a high Curie temperature TC value above 1300°C, which is expected to work in higher temperature environment. However, pure SNO presents a piezoelectric constant d33 value of ∼ 1 pC/N. Hence, (Li, Ce) ions are doped in SNO ceramics, which increases the distortion of oxygen octahedrons and enhances the intrinsic contribution of piezoelectric properties. The increased domain size with large proportion of high response areas means that the extrinsic contribution is also improved. The introduction of (Li, Ce) ions can also promote ceramic's grain growth and reduce oxygen vacancies, leading to the improvement of electrical properties. The optimal component Sr1.96(Li, Ce)0.02Nb2O7 ceramics exhibit a d33 value of 3.1 pC/N, a higher resistivity of 1.65×106 Ω·cm at 700°C and an excellent thermal stability (a d33 value of 3.0 pC/N after annealing at 1200°C for 2 h). This work provides an effective approach with simple process and low cost for the application of PLS materials in high‐temperature environments.

Abstract:Antimony modified 0.67BiFeO3-0.33BaTiO3 based ceramics with pure perovskite structure have been fabricated by conventional solid-state reaction method. The effects of single Sb ion doping on the microstructure, permittivity, electric field induced strain (S) and ferroelectric performance are investigated systematically. The XRD and permittivity analysis results indicate a mixed phase of pseudo-cubic and rhombohedral at morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Compared with other single ion doped BF-BT systems, Sb doped samples show a large strain under relatively small electric field. The highest unipolar strain (0.168%) and converse piezoelectric coefficient d 33* (336 pm/V) at 50 kV/cm are obtained in 0.67BiFe99.75%Sb0.25%O3-0.33BaTiO3 ceramic, Which may be attributed to the domains wall movement facilitated by the soft effect of donor doping Sb. This work suggests simple single B-site ion doping can also effectively improve the electromechanical performance of BiFeO3-BaTiO3 based ceramics under low electric field.

Abstract:Lead-free (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O-3 (x=0.02-0.20) ceramics were prepared successfully using a solid-state reaction technique. The polymorphic phase transitions from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase around room temperature were identified in the composition range of 0.06 < x < 0.10. A high piezoelectric coefficient of d(33)=365 pC/N and high planar electromechanical coupling factor of k(p)=48.5% were obtained for the sample of x=0.08. With the doping of Ca content, the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition point shifted toward room temperature while the relative high Curie temperature (T-c) was still maintained about 110 degrees C.
