Abstract:As one of the most popular interferometric phase demodulation techniques, phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technique has been widely used in fields of high-precision measurement and sensing. Carrier phase delay ( θ ) and modulation depth ( C ) are two critical factors affecting the fidelity of the demodulation results. Inappropriate values of θ or C will lead to nonlinear distortions for the basic Arctan demodulation scheme or linear distortions for the differential-cross-multiplying (DCM) demodulation scheme in the demodulated results. To overcome these problems, an improved Arctan demodulation scheme with immunity to θ and C is proposed. As expected from theoretical analysis, simulation results have confirmed the insensitivity of the improved scheme to θ and C compared with the basic Arctan and DCM schemes. A sinusoidal phase modulation interferometer was constructed to further test the performance of the proposed scheme. Experimental results show that, with θ changes from 0° to 180° or C changes from 1.5 rad to 3.5 rad, the demodulated results of the improved Arctan scheme have a low THD less than 0.5 %, a high SINAD greater than 45 dB and stable amplitude with standard deviation of less than 0.01 rad, demonstrating the immunity of the proposed scheme to carrier phase delay and modulation depth.

Abstract:A novel ameliorated phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm based on arctangent function and differential-self-multiplying (DSM) is proposed in this paper. The harmonic distortion due to nonlinearity and the stability with light intensity disturbance (LID) are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The nonlinearity of the PGC demodulation algorithm has been analyzed and an analytical expression of the total-harmonic-distortion (THD) has been derived. Experimental results have confirmed the low harmonic distortion of the ameliorated PGC algorithm as expected by the theoretical analysis. Compared with the traditional PGC-arctan and PGC-DCM algorithm, the ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much lower THD as well as a better signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD). A THD of below 0.1% and a SINAD of 60 dB have been achieved with PGC modulation depth (C value) ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 rad. The stability performance with LID has also been studied. The ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much higher stability than the PGC-DCM algorithm. It can keep stable operations with LID depth as large as 26.5 dB and LID frequency as high as 1 kHz. The system employing the ameliorated PGC demodulation algorithm has a minimum detectable phase shift of 5 μrad/√Hz @ 1 kHz, a large dynamic range of 120 dB @ 100 Hz, and a high linearity of better than 99.99%.

Abstract:Phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technology has been widely used in fiber-optic interferometric sensors system in recent years. Nonlinear errors caused by interference noise and parasitic amplitude modulation (AM) are key factors that affect the reliability of traditional PGC demodulation system based on arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm. In order to enhance the reliable performance of PGC demodulation system under the conditions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high parasitic AM interference, an ellipse fitting algorithm based on the GaussNewton iteration (GNI) is proposed, which is called the PGC-Arctan-GNI demodulation algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses the Euclidean distance to accurately estimate the geometric parameters of ellipse, which can correct the nonlinear distortion of the demodulated signal. In addition, the PGC demodulation system designed based on GNI algorithm has the advantages of strong antinoise ability, good antiparasitic AM ability, and widely dynamic range of the input signal amplitude. Experimental results show that, compared with the direct demodulation algorithm and the ellipse fitting algorithm based on the least squares (LS) method, the SINAD value of the proposed algorithm is always greater than 30 dB and higher than the other two algorithms under the condition of low SNR. Under the condition that the parasitic AM index $m$ changes from 0 to 0.5, the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) curve of the proposed algorithm is more stable than the curves of the other two algorithms, and the fluctuation range of the SINAD value does not exceed 3 dB. This algorithm also has a wider input signal amplitude range than the LS algorithm. Especially, when the amplitude of the measured signal is less than $\pi$/2, the relative amplitude error of the GNI algorithm is less than 2 and significantly smaller than the LS algorithm. Finally, the demodulation results using real measured data in the actual system show that the frequency and amplitude of the demodulated signal are same as the original signal. At the same time, the SNIAD value of this system reaches 67.40 dB, the spurious-free dynamic range value reaches 68.82 dB, and the total harmonic distortion value reaches -68.40 dB@1 KHz. In summary, the proposed PGC-Arctan-GNI algorithm can eliminate system nonlinear errors caused by the parasitic AM, harmonics, and noise interference by estimating the ellipse parameters, thereby effectively enhancing the stability and reliability of the PGC demodulation system.

Abstract:Phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation schemes are widely used in fiber-optic interferometric sensors. Basic PGC schemes required the certain value of the phase modulation depth to work properly. In this paper, a novel phase modulation depth evaluation and correction technique for PGC demodulation schemes based on the integral control feedback is presented. The proposed scheme provides the phase modulation depth stabilization to the certain predefined optimal value. Detailed theoretical analysis and mathematical modeling of the proposed scheme and the PGC-Atan demodulation scheme were performed to estimate their required parameters. The suggested technique with the PGC-Atan demodulation scheme was implemented in the field-programmable gate array-based electronic processing circuit of the single interferometric fiber Bragg grating sensor. Experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis and the proposed scheme provides real-time stabilization of the phase modulation depth to its optimal value 2.63 rad with the standard deviation less than $5\ast 10^{-4}$ rad.

Abstract:This paper presents a 27.7-31.2 GHz highly integrated 8-element 4-beam transmitter front end in 65-nm CMOS for phased-array applications. The proposed hybrid variable-gain amplifier (VGA) combines digital common-source (CS) VGA and analog Gilbert-cell-based VGA to realize a large tuning range and high resolution simultaneously. Furthermore, the proposed VGA scheme also integrates with an active combining network to implement a compact multi-beam structure. In the vector-modulation-based phase shifter (PS), low/high pass lumped delay lines are inserted between CS transistors and common-gate (CG) transistors to form I/Q signals which drive four pairs of Gilbert-cell based G(m)-arrays for different phase states. In addition, the output element leverages a symmetrical transformer-based Doherty power amplifier (PA) and an analog adaptive bias to improve the power-back-off (PBO) efficiency with a high peak-to-average-ratio (PAPR) modulation signal. With a 1.1-V supply voltage, this front end achieves a saturated output power (P-sat) of 19.2 dBm with a 20.5% channel efficiency and a 1-dB compression point (OP1dB) of 18.2 dBm. The measured maximum drain efficiency (DE) is 40.8% and 6-dB PBO DE is 28%. Compared with class-B/A PAs, the DE is improved by 40%/180%. The proposed hybrid VGA achieves a 27-dB tuning range and a 0.25-dB gain step with 0.26 dB/1.9 degrees RMS gain/phase errors. The active PS implements 6-bit 360 degrees phase shifting with 0.25 dB/2.5. RMS gain/phase errors.

Abstract:In the realm of acoustic signal detection, the identification of weak signals, particularly in the presence of negative signal-to-noise ratios, poses a significant challenge. This challenge is further heightened when signals are acquired through fiber-optic hydrophones, as these signals often lack physical significance and resist clear systematic modeling. Conventional processing methods, e.g., low-pass filter (LPF), require a thorough understanding of the effective signal bandwidth for noise reduction, and may introduce undesirable time lags. This paper introduces an innovative feedback control method with dual Kalman filters for the demodulation of phase signals with noises in fiber-optic hydrophones. A mathematical model of the closed-loop system is established to guide the design of the feedback control, aiming to achieve a balance with the input phase signal. The dual Kalman filters are instrumental in mitigating the effects of signal noise, observation noise, and control execution noise, thereby enabling precise estimation for the input phase signals. The effectiveness of this feedback control method is demonstrated through examples, showcasing the restoration of low-noise signals, negative signal-to-noise ratio signals, and multi-frequency signals. This research contributes to the technical advancement of high-performance devices, including fiber-optic hydrophones and phase-locked amplifiers.

Abstract:This paper proposes a phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation scheme for sinusoidal phase modulation interferometer (SPMI) that does not require a second harmonic carrier signal. In this scheme, an in-phase interference signal component with direct current (DC) bias is obtained by low-pass filtering the original interference signal, and a quadrature interference signal component is obtained by conventional means. The Lissajous figure formed by these two quadrature interference signal components is an ellipse whose center deviates from the origin of the I-Q coordinates. By fitting this ellipse, the major and minor axes and the center coordinates can be obtained. These elliptic parameters are then used to eliminate DC bias and normalize the amplitude of the quadrature signal components. Finally, the phase demodulation of the interference signal can be realized by using arctangent algorithm or differential cross multiplication (DCM) algorithm. The results of simulation and experiment have verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed PGC demodulation scheme, and show that it is insensitive to the phase modulation depth C. Compared with conventional PGC demodulation, this scheme requires lower depth of carrier phase modulation. The vibration measurement results indicate that the average signal-to-noise and distortion Ratio (SINAD) and total harmonic distortion (THD) values of demodulation results in the frequency range of 130 Hz to 250 Hz are 34 dB and -33 dB respectively. The proposed PGC demodulation scheme shows good performance in displacement measurement using SPMI.

Abstract:In this study, a phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm combined with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm based on an electro-optic modulator (EOM) is proposed, which can achieve nonlinear distortion (such as modulation depth drift and carrier phase delay) suppression for high-frequency phase carrier modulation. The improved algorithm is implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware platform. The experimental results by the PGC-EKF method show that total harmonic distortion (THD) decreases from −32.61 to −54.51 dB, and SINAD increases from 32.59 to 47.86 dB, compared to the traditional PGC-Arctan method. This indicates that the PGC-EKF demodulation algorithm proposed in this paper can be widely used in many important fields such as hydrophone, transformer, and ultrasound signal detection.

Abstract:In order to eliminate the effect of amplitude modulation in the source with direct frequency modulation(DFM) on phase generated carrier(PGC) demodulation approach,a new PGC method was proposed based on differential-cross multiply(DCM) and double interferometric signals by a 3×2 directional coupler.Experimental results confirm that the new scheme has eliminated the effect of the companion amplitude modulation on demodulation very well.For a demodulation signal of 4 rad,the total signal-harmonic-ratio(SHR) increases by more than 20 dB,and the amplitude deviation of this new method is 0.08 rad,while it is up to 0.33 rad by the DCM-PGC approach for a single interferometric signal.Besides,the signal-tonoise ratio(SNR) and signal-to-noise-and-distortion(SINAD) are also improved significantly.

Abstract:Through analyzing the 8PSK demodulation algorithm including carrier recovery and clock timing recovery, an all-digital 8PSK demodulator suitable to the next generation digital satellite television standard DVB-S2 was proposed. The carrier recovery algorithm consists of a frequency detector (FD) loop and a modified phase-frequency detector (PFD) loop. Its tracking range exceeds one time symbol-rate. The Gardner TED algorithm was used in the clock timing recovery loop. Results of analysis and computer fixed point simulation were applied to determine the optimal parameter of each loop. The symbol error performance under AWGN was also presented. Simulation result shows that the demodulator's performance is close to theory and realizable, and all algorithms can be implemented in hardware.

Abstract:After analyzing the sensing theory of a DFB fiber laser, the demodulation principle of fiber Bragg grating hydrophone using a phase generated carrier based on Michel son interferometer was introduced. A digital demodulation system based on DSP was designed then, and a feasible resolution was provided to the error-induced factor caused by the frequency error between that of sinusoidal modulation and of mixing signals. The experiment shows, the waveform of demodulated acoustic signal with low frequency was nice.

Abstract:According to PGC demodulation algorithm for fiber optic hydrophone, a hardware implementation based on FPGA is presented. Comparing with the current demodulation systems based on DSPs, the processing speed is one to two orders faster, so that the performance and the ability of anti-aliasing are significantly increased. A conclusion is drawn that an FPGA-based system for signal processing of fiber optic hydrophone is a solution with high capacity and high anti-overlapping ability.

Abstract:The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.

Abstract:In this article, the concept, design, and validation of a circularly polarized (CP) agile and beam-steering reconfigurable array based on geometric phase presetting technique (GPPT) are reported, featuring a significant axial ratio (AR) performance improvement for all states. The used CP agile 3-bit patch element is enabled by utilizing a reconfigurable feeding network (RFN) composed of two digital phase shifters and a single-pole four-throw (SP4T) switch. By altering the state of RFN, the polarization can be switched between left-handed CP (LHCP) and right-handed CP (RHCP), and eight phase states (i.e., 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°, 270°, 315°) can be provided simultaneously to realize the 3-bit element. By properly manipulating the array phase distribution, the radiation pattern of the designed array can be dynamically steered in a range from −52° to 52° for each CP mode. Importantly, different from the uniform distribution of elements in traditional arrays, here the adjacent elements of the array based on GPPT are rotated 90° in turn. Due to the opposite geometric phase response between the two CP waves, the co- and cross-polarization components of the array exhibit different phase distribution. Consequently, the cross-polarization in the main beam direction is significantly suppressed within the whole operating frequency band. The joint 3 dB AR relative bandwidth for all states is extended to 20.8%. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, a prototype of the GPPT-based array is fabricated and characterized. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones, thus validating the reconfigurability and the great advantages in broadening the AR bandwidth.

Abstract:A modified Viterbi-Viterbi (MVV) carrier phase recovery (CPR) algorithm is comprehensively studied based on the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) partition scheme. By improving the QPSK partition scheme for the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM), MVV algorithm is developed for the optical fiber communication systems with the modulation formats of dual-polarization 64-QAM (DP-64QAM) and DP-256QAM. Numerical simulations have been carried out in a 9-channel Nyquist-spaced 32-Gbaud optical transmission system for different modulation formats and the performance of MVV CPR with respect to pilot-aided (PA) CPR has been examined. Results show that MVV CPR can significantly mitigate the laser phase noise in the system using high-order modulation formats. Compared to PA CPR, MVV CPR performs better with the increase of the transmission distance, where the impact of equalization enhanced phase noise has to be taken into account. Furthermore, MVV has been compared with other CPR approaches in terms of the performance and the computational complexity.

Abstract:We analyze the transfer factor for phase noise (NTF phi) of PGC system. According to NTF phi, we optimize the system phase noise performance by setting proper working point. Since we use hydrophones with the same Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser, the noise from laser resource takes the leading post. We build up the theory model of correlation coefficients, and demonstrated a new system using a reference interferometer with 3 x 2 coupler. The homologous noise is eliminated. We get output noise with the PSD (Power Spectral Density) 8.5dB higher than that of circuit noise and 14dB higher than that of DC intensity noise.

Abstract:The carrier phase offset induced by the mismatch between the signal subcarrier frequency and arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) reference clock is a key problem for high-speed multi-band visible light communication (VLC) system. In this paper, we propose a blind carrier phase estimation (CPE) algorithm based on geometric projection for multi-band Nyquist pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) system. Compared with traditional CPE algorithms, the proposed method does not contain any feedback loop and the Mth power operation. Therefore, the lower computational complexity and simpler system structure are both achieved. Furthermore, we experimentally validate the proposed CPE algorithm in a three-band PAM-8 VLC system. The measured results show the system performance can be greatly improved. And compared with the Viterbi and Viterbi (V&V) algorithm using training symbols (20% of the total symbol length), the proposed CPE algorithm can slightly outperform. However, the scheme is a blind estimation without any assistant training sequences. Thus higher bandwidth efficiency is achieved.
