Abstract:In the field of interferometric fiber-optic sensing, the differential-cross-multiplication type of phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technique has a low stability defect and the arc tangent PGC demodulation technique has a high harmonic distortion defect. Thus, we present an improved PGC demodulation technique based on arc cotangent function and differential-self-multiplying. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the interferometric fiber-optic sensing system that has adopted the improved PGC demodulation technique has the merits of high stability of resisting the rapid change of light intensity and low harmonic distortion; experimental results show that the demodulation system has a resolution of 2 × 10-5 rad/√Hz, a total harmonic distortion less than 0.1%, a linearity of better than 0.9999, and a dynamic range of 112 dB at 50 Hz.

Abstract:Phase generation carrier (PGC) demodulation technique is widely adopted in the field of interferometric optical fiber sensors, for its high sensitivity, good linearity and large dynamic range. In this paper, a novel single-path differential divide PGC demodulation algorithm (PGC-SDD) is designed and analyzed. Experimental results show that not only the distortion induced by light intensity but also the harmonic distortion induced by the modulation depth are well suppressed by the PGC-SDD algorithm. The signal-to-noise and distortion ratio of sensors using the proposed algorithm achieved a gain of 28.06 dB and 13.13 dB over that using differential-cross-multiplying (PGC-DCM) algorithm and PGC Arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm, respectively. In addition, the PGC-SDD demodulation algorithm can also demodulate non-periodic signals. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A self-referenced phase generation carrier (SR-PGC) algorithm is proposed in this paper. The influence related to modulation depth, light intensity and carrier phase delay can be theoretically eliminated. In classical PGC algorithm, the orthogonal components are obtained by mixing the detected signal with the proper multiples of carrier frequency and low-pass filtering, which are related to several parameters (modulation depth, light intensity, carrier phase delay, etc.). We notice that the differential signals of them also contain the parameters above. In the proposed SR-PGC algorithm, the orthogonal components are taken as the reference signals, and they are divided by their own differential signals, so that the parameters above can be eliminated in real-time. The algorithm was implemented in the field-programmable gate array-based electronic processing circuit, and a large dynamic range of 178.2 dB@200 Hz was achieved. Within 1 kHz bandwidth, the phase resolution reached 2 mu rad/Hz1/2. A maximum light intensity rejection ratio of 37.0 dB was obtained. While the modulation depth is between 1 rad and 3.5 rad, the signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD) and the total harmonic distortion (THD) can reach as good as 74.0 dB and -76.8 dB respectively, and the fluctuation of the SINAD and THD in 4 h were both within 1.2%. These experimental results prove the high stability of SR-PGC algorithm.

Abstract:Phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation schemes are widely used in fiber-optic interferometric sensors. Basic PGC schemes required the certain value of the phase modulation depth to work properly. In this paper, a novel phase modulation depth evaluation and correction technique for PGC demodulation schemes based on the integral control feedback is presented. The proposed scheme provides the phase modulation depth stabilization to the certain predefined optimal value. Detailed theoretical analysis and mathematical modeling of the proposed scheme and the PGC-Atan demodulation scheme were performed to estimate their required parameters. The suggested technique with the PGC-Atan demodulation scheme was implemented in the field-programmable gate array-based electronic processing circuit of the single interferometric fiber Bragg grating sensor. Experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis and the proposed scheme provides real-time stabilization of the phase modulation depth to its optimal value 2.63 rad with the standard deviation less than $5\ast 10^{-4}$ rad.

Abstract:As one of the most popular interferometric phase demodulation techniques, phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technique has been widely used in fields of high-precision measurement and sensing. Carrier phase delay ( θ ) and modulation depth ( C ) are two critical factors affecting the fidelity of the demodulation results. Inappropriate values of θ or C will lead to nonlinear distortions for the basic Arctan demodulation scheme or linear distortions for the differential-cross-multiplying (DCM) demodulation scheme in the demodulated results. To overcome these problems, an improved Arctan demodulation scheme with immunity to θ and C is proposed. As expected from theoretical analysis, simulation results have confirmed the insensitivity of the improved scheme to θ and C compared with the basic Arctan and DCM schemes. A sinusoidal phase modulation interferometer was constructed to further test the performance of the proposed scheme. Experimental results show that, with θ changes from 0° to 180° or C changes from 1.5 rad to 3.5 rad, the demodulated results of the improved Arctan scheme have a low THD less than 0.5 %, a high SINAD greater than 45 dB and stable amplitude with standard deviation of less than 0.01 rad, demonstrating the immunity of the proposed scheme to carrier phase delay and modulation depth.

Abstract:The phase generated carrier (PGC) technology could be used in the single core vibration distributed interferometric optical fiber sensor to increase the sensing distance through reducing the effect of the parasitic interference generated by the scattered light along the sensing fiber. In this paper, a characteristic PGC modulation and demodulation technology is presented, which is different from the traditional one. In this type of PGC technology, the reference signal is not needed for the demodulation, which makes it feasible to demodulate the signal in a remote place away from the modulation site. The proposed technology is especially suitable for long distance distributed detection and has high practical application vale.

Abstract:The parameters of the semiconductor laser source are vital for the performances of optical coherent systems. In this paper, a novel method to measure the phase-shift phi(m) between laser central opticalfrequency modulation (COFM) and the accompanied optical-intensity modulation (AOIM) is proposed, which is easy to realize and requires no further fiber etalons or high-speed demodulators. An orthogonal test is utilized to measure phi(m). Experimental results show that the value of phi(m) approaches 1.09 pi under different COFM conditions. Then the interference model of phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation is modified by taking into account the effect of phi(m), and the influences of phi(m) on the demodulation results using two methods (look-up table and AOIM-factor division) are further analyzed in detail. Abstract:Phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technology has been widely used in fiber-optic interferometric sensors system in recent years. Nonlinear errors caused by interference noise and parasitic amplitude modulation (AM) are key factors that affect the reliability of traditional PGC demodulation system based on arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm. In order to enhance the reliable performance of PGC demodulation system under the conditions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high parasitic AM interference, an ellipse fitting algorithm based on the GaussNewton iteration (GNI) is proposed, which is called the PGC-Arctan-GNI demodulation algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses the Euclidean distance to accurately estimate the geometric parameters of ellipse, which can correct the nonlinear distortion of the demodulated signal. In addition, the PGC demodulation system designed based on GNI algorithm has the advantages of strong antinoise ability, good antiparasitic AM ability, and widely dynamic range of the input signal amplitude. Experimental results show that, compared with the direct demodulation algorithm and the ellipse fitting algorithm based on the least squares (LS) method, the SINAD value of the proposed algorithm is always greater than 30 dB and higher than the other two algorithms under the condition of low SNR. Under the condition that the parasitic AM index $m$ changes from 0 to 0.5, the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) curve of the proposed algorithm is more stable than the curves of the other two algorithms, and the fluctuation range of the SINAD value does not exceed 3 dB. This algorithm also has a wider input signal amplitude range than the LS algorithm. Especially, when the amplitude of the measured signal is less than $\pi$/2, the relative amplitude error of the GNI algorithm is less than 2 and significantly smaller than the LS algorithm. Finally, the demodulation results using real measured data in the actual system show that the frequency and amplitude of the demodulated signal are same as the original signal. At the same time, the SNIAD value of this system reaches 67.40 dB, the spurious-free dynamic range value reaches 68.82 dB, and the total harmonic distortion value reaches -68.40 dB@1 KHz. In summary, the proposed PGC-Arctan-GNI algorithm can eliminate system nonlinear errors caused by the parasitic AM, harmonics, and noise interference by estimating the ellipse parameters, thereby effectively enhancing the stability and reliability of the PGC demodulation system.

Abstract:A novel ameliorated phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm based on arctangent function and differential-self-multiplying (DSM) is proposed in this paper. The harmonic distortion due to nonlinearity and the stability with light intensity disturbance (LID) are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The nonlinearity of the PGC demodulation algorithm has been analyzed and an analytical expression of the total-harmonic-distortion (THD) has been derived. Experimental results have confirmed the low harmonic distortion of the ameliorated PGC algorithm as expected by the theoretical analysis. Compared with the traditional PGC-arctan and PGC-DCM algorithm, the ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much lower THD as well as a better signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD). A THD of below 0.1% and a SINAD of 60 dB have been achieved with PGC modulation depth (C value) ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 rad. The stability performance with LID has also been studied. The ameliorated PGC algorithm has a much higher stability than the PGC-DCM algorithm. It can keep stable operations with LID depth as large as 26.5 dB and LID frequency as high as 1 kHz. The system employing the ameliorated PGC demodulation algorithm has a minimum detectable phase shift of 5 μrad/√Hz @ 1 kHz, a large dynamic range of 120 dB @ 100 Hz, and a high linearity of better than 99.99%.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a demodulation scheme for interferometric optical fiber sensing using combined waveform phase modulation. The method is based on a designed combined waveform and time-division separation technology, which moves the target signal to the sidebands of the carrier signal and eliminates the influence of residual direct current (DC) term and low-frequency intensity noise by filtering the detector signal directly. The effect of the modulation-to-target ratio (MTR) defined as the ratio of the modulation frequency to the target frequency on the demodulation results is also discussed. Both simulations and experiments verify the ability to obtain a pair of quadrature signals. The experimental results indicate that the phase resolution of the system is 1.1 x 10-6 rad/root Hz@2 kHz when the MTR is 625, and 5 x 10-6 rad/root Hz@2 kHz when the MTR is 25, while demonstrating excellent demodulation consistency. This work not only has the advantages of carrier modulation methods, but also does not need to generate analog signals for mixing, which provides guidance for high-sensitivity phase demodulation technology.
Research on Quadrature Crosstalk in the Time-Division-multiplexing Optical Fiber Vector Sensor Array Based on PGC Technology

Abstract:We investigate the quadrature crosstalk characteristics of three-dimensional optical fiber vector sensor in a time-division-multiplexing (TDM) array based on phase generated carrier (PGC) technology in theory and experiment. A theoretical model based on PGC demodulation technology is established. The numerical simulation based on the theoretical model is carried on and indicates that the quadrature crosstalk of the optical fiber vector sensor is governed by the path difference of the interferometer, the length of the delay fiber, the number of array channels and the extinction ratio of the acousto-optic modulator (AOM). A four channels TDM array based on four cascaded interferometers was set up to verify the theoretical analysis. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis. This research provides insight into the quadrature crosstalk in a TDM optical fiber vector sensor array, and can be used to optimize the array design in specific applications.

Abstract:According to the mechanism of the interferometric fiber-optic sensor, an optical orthogonal heterodyne demodulation technology has been investigated in this paper. A variable fiber delay line was used to adjust the optical phase delay to obtain optical orthogonal heterodyne demodulation, so that the low-frequency noise in the photo-detector can be reduced. Comparing with the conventional heterodyne demodulation schemes, the additional noise as well as temperature-related drift induced by the electronic phase drift devices can be eliminated by using the proposed demodulation technology. An experiment system was set up to measure the optical phase change induced by the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) vibration. The result shows that the proposed scheme can demodulate the sensing signal efficiently, and a minimum detectable phase shift of 9.2 × 10 -5 rad can be achieved.

Abstract:This paper proposes a phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation scheme for sinusoidal phase modulation interferometer (SPMI) that does not require a second harmonic carrier signal. In this scheme, an in-phase interference signal component with direct current (DC) bias is obtained by low-pass filtering the original interference signal, and a quadrature interference signal component is obtained by conventional means. The Lissajous figure formed by these two quadrature interference signal components is an ellipse whose center deviates from the origin of the I-Q coordinates. By fitting this ellipse, the major and minor axes and the center coordinates can be obtained. These elliptic parameters are then used to eliminate DC bias and normalize the amplitude of the quadrature signal components. Finally, the phase demodulation of the interference signal can be realized by using arctangent algorithm or differential cross multiplication (DCM) algorithm. The results of simulation and experiment have verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed PGC demodulation scheme, and show that it is insensitive to the phase modulation depth C. Compared with conventional PGC demodulation, this scheme requires lower depth of carrier phase modulation. The vibration measurement results indicate that the average signal-to-noise and distortion Ratio (SINAD) and total harmonic distortion (THD) values of demodulation results in the frequency range of 130 Hz to 250 Hz are 34 dB and -33 dB respectively. The proposed PGC demodulation scheme shows good performance in displacement measurement using SPMI.

Abstract:A novel vibration signal demodulation scheme of fiber-optic interferometric sensor is proposed and demonstrated. A frequency-modulated (FM) single sideband (SSB) light-wave signal is generated by applying an FM microwave signal to a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) for the demodulation of fiber-optic vibration interferometric sensor. A method of 12-sample orthogonal demodulation algorithm (ODA) based on setting the system sampling rate to 12 times of the FM frequency is adopted for the generation of two orthogonal signals for arctangent transformation. The experimental results show that the harmonic distortion is well suppressed compared with the traditional phase generation carrier (PGC) arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm, and a minimum detectable phase shift is achieved about 6.3 x 10(-5) rad/root Hz at 5 kHz.
Efficient Photonic Microwave Mixer with Compensation of the Chromatic Dispersion-Induced Power Fading

Abstract:The conversion gain of a photonic microwave mixer is often limited by the large carrier of the modulated optical signal, and may be further deteriorated by the chromatic dispersion-induced power fading after transmission over fiber. To solve this problem, an efficient photonic microwave mixer based on a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator is proposed in this paper. The carrier of the modulated optical signal is suppressed by bidirectional use of the modulator in a Sagnac loop, and a 21.9-dB improvement of the conversion gain is achieved in the experiment. In addition, the frequency response of the mixer after transmission over fiber can be tuned by simply adjusting the direct current bias of the modulator. This feature is applied to compensate the dispersion-induced power fading of the mixing product. In the proof of concept experiment, a vector signal centered at 2.4 GHz is up-converted to 16 GHz and transmitted over 25-km single mode fiber. After power compensation, the constellation diagram, error vector magnitude and receiver sensitivity are significantly improved, and are almost as good as that without fiber transmission.

Abstract:Modulation error is a main error source of phase-shifting technique in the field of interferometric fiber optic sensing. To solve this problem, a multistep phase-shifting method with modulation error correction capability using rectangular-pulse binary phase modulation is proposed in this paper. In this method, a pair of three-step interference signals are obtained with the $\pi $ /2 phase modulation to generate multistep phase-shifting interference signals. The cross-correlation operation of the two signals with the same phase shift is calculated. Then, precise control of $\pi $ /2 modulation can be realized using simulated annealing algorithm to correct the modulation error. In addition, compared with the three-step phase-shifting algorithm, the extracted five-step phase-shifting algorithm itself has a higher ability to suppress the modulation error. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that this method can be used to demodulate the phase result with high effectiveness and stability, improve the time domain signal and reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD), which provides a novel perspective for high-performance fiber-optic sensing and phase-shifting technique. In the actual experiment, after the calibration of modulation error, THD is effectively reduced from 7.5% to 4.5%. In addition, the method is verified by the demodulation of 200 Hz and 1000 Hz signals. The method also shows excellent repeatability and linearity in demodulation of sensing signals.

Abstract:An improved optical pulse heterodyne demodulation scheme for fiber-optic interferometric sensors is demonstrated. This scheme uses two series-connected Acoustic-optic modulators (AOMs) as intensity modulator and frequency shifter respectively. Compared to the traditional optical heterodyne demodulation structure, this scheme eliminates the polarization-induced signal fading and the noise floor is lowered for using the Michelson-configuration delay structure and Faraday rotation mirrors (FRMs) in the optic architecture of system. At the same time, the architecture of this scheme is not complicated and can be used to complex a large sensor array. Experimental results show that the phase noise floor of this demodulation scheme is flat and reaches -99dB/sqrt(Hz) at frequencies above 300 Hz.

Abstract:In order to realize compact and flexible wide-range displacement measurement, a fiber interferometer with the Phase Generated Carrier(PGC) method was proposed.First, the PGC method was detailed.The analysis on the internal and external modulations revealed the limitation of internal modulation and indicated that the external modulation was more suitable for wide-range displacement measurement.Then, two existing displacement calculation algorithms were analyzed by mathematical deduction and MATLAB simulation, proving that PGC-ATAN algorithm is better than PGC-DCM algorithm in millimeter-scale displacement measurement.A fiber interferometer based on the PGC method was established and tested experimentally.The results indicate that compared to PGC-DCM algorithm, PGC-ATAN algorithm is a better candidate for millimeter-scale displacement measurement.The maximum relative error of the interferometer in a millimeter-scale step motion is 255.21 nm with a standard deviation of 78.56 nm.It can satisfy the system requirements of high-precision and wide-range in displacement measurements.
