Combustion and Flame
Abstract:Catalytic combustion plays an important role in fuel ignition and flame stabilization. A clear understanding of the catalytic ignition properties of alkenes is essential for improving ignition success in advanced hypersonic vehicles. The effects of Pt/C catalyst on the ignition delay times of ethylene/air diluted by Ar were systematically measured in a rapid compression machine under temperatures of T c = 847–975 K, equivalence ratios of φ = 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, pressures of P c = 35.0 – 52.7 bar, and a dilution of 50 vol% Ar. A novel catalyst particle drying and suspension device with a magnetic stirrer was developed for the preparation of suspended Pt/C particles mixed with Ar. The additive mass was defined for the characterization of Pt/C catalyst additive quantities. Experimental results show that the enhancing effect of Pt/C catalyst on the ignition delay times of ethylene/air/Ar was proceeded by four stages of different decreasing rates, which was more significant at the additive mass of 0.15–0.71 mg. Moreover, the increase in operating pressure can enlarge the additive mass to shorten the ignition delay times. However, the catalytic efficiency gradually weakened with increasing pressure, which can be improved by increasing additive mass. The decreasing temperature and the increasing equivalence ratio were also found advantageous to increase the enhancing effect of the Pt/C catalyst.
