Abstract:Energy-storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors have become fundamental building blocks in modern society. Recently, the emerging direction toward the ever-growing market of flexible and wearable electronics has nourished progress in building multifunctional energy-storage systems that can be bent, folded, crumpled, and stretched while maintaining their electrochemical functions under deformation. Here, recent progress and well-developed strategies in research designed to accomplish flexible and stretchable lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors are reviewed. The challenges of developing novel materials and configurations with tailored features, and in designing simple and large-scaled manufacturing methods that can be widely utilized are considered. Furthermore, the perspectives and opportunities for this emerging field of materials science and engineering are also discussed.

Abstract:With the growing market of wearable devices for smart sensing and personalized healthcare applications, energy storage devices that ensure stable power supply and can be constructed in flexible platforms have attracted tremendous research interests. A variety of active materials and fabrication strategies of flexible energy storage devices have been intensively studied in recent years, especially for integrated self-powered systems and biosensing. A series of materials and applications for flexible energy storage devices have been studied in recent years. In this review, the commonly adopted fabrication methods of flexible energy storage devices are introduced. Besides, recent advances in integrating these energy devices into flexible self-powered systems are presented. Furthermore, the applications of flexible energy storage devices for biosensing are summarized. Finally, the prospects and challenges of the self-powered sensing system for wearable electronics are discussed.

Abstract:The swift progress in wearable technology has accentuated the need for flexible power systems. Such systems are anticipated to exhibit high efficiency, robust durability, consistent power output, and the potential for effortless integration. Integrating ultraflexible energy harvesters and energy storage devices to form an autonomous, efficient, and mechanically compliant power system remains a significant challenge. In this work, we report a 90 µm-thick energy harvesting and storage system (FEHSS) consisting of high-performance organic photovoltaics and zinc-ion batteries within an ultraflexible configuration. With a power conversion efficiency surpassing 16%, power output exceeding 10 mW cm-2, and an energy density beyond 5.82 mWh cm-2, the FEHSS can be tailored to meet the power demands of wearable sensors and gadgets. Without cumbersome and rigid components, FEHSS shows immense potential as a versatile power source to advance wearable electronics and contribute toward a sustainable future.

Abstract:Given the escalating demand for wearable electronics, there is an urgent need to explore cost-effective and environmentally friendly flexible energy storage devices with exceptional electrochemical properties. However, the existing types of flexible energy storage devices encounter challenges in effectively integrating mechanical and electrochemical performances. This review is intended to provide strategies for the design of components in flexible energy storage devices (electrode materials, gel electrolytes, and separators) with the aim of developing energy storage systems with excellent performance and deformability. Firstly, a concise overview is provided on the structural characteristics and properties of carbon-based materials and conductive polymer materials utilized in flexible energy storage devices. Secondly, the fabrication process and strategies for optimizing their structures are summarized. Subsequently, a comprehensive review is presented regarding the applications of carbon-based materials and conductive polymer materials in various fields of flexible energy storage, such as supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and zinc-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and future directions for next-generation flexible energy storage systems are proposed.

Abstract:Smart energy storage has revolutionized portable electronics and electrical vehicles. The current smart energy storage devices have penetrated into flexible electronic markets at an unprecedented rate. Flexible batteries are key power sources to enable vast flexible devices, which put forward additional requirements, such as bendable, twistable, stretchable, and ultrathin, to adapt mechanical deformation under the working conditions. This review summarizes the recent advances in construction and configuration of flexible batteries and discusses the general metrics to benchmark various flexible batteries with different materials and chemistries. Moreover, we present advanced prototype flexible batteries developed by some companies to afford general envision of the technological status. Lastly, the critical points are summarized in the development of flexible batteries and remaining challenges are also presented for the future design of flexible batteries in practical perspectives.

Abstract:Research into flexible energy-storage devices with high energy density and superior mechanical performance has aroused considerable interest for the development of flexible electronics. Numerous new materials and strategies have been developed to obtain soft, safe, and high-performance flexible electrodes, which are essential components of flexible energy storage devices. The common preparation methods and fabrication techniques of flexible electrode are summarized, including their mechanisms, operations, advantages and disadvantages, applicable conditions, and suitable materials. The electrode materials are also briefly discussed according to their characteristics and morphologies, and suggestions on the method preferred for different materials are given. Perspectives on the development of flexible-electrode fabrication are also given.

Abstract:The unending demand for portable, flexible, and even wearable electronic devices that have an aesthetic appeal and unique functionality stimulates the development of advanced power sources that have excellent electrochemical performance and, more importantly, shape versatility. The challenges in the fabrication of next-generation flexible power sources mainly arise from their limited form factors, which prevent their facile integration into differently shaped electronic devices, and from the lack of reliable electrochemical materials that exhibit optimized attributes and suitable processability. This review describes the technological innovations and challenges associated with flexible energy storage and conversion systems such as lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, along with an overview of the progress in flexible proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and solar cells. In particular, recently highlighted cable-type flexible batteries with extreme omni-directional flexibility are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for energy and the climate challenges caused by the consumption of traditional fuels, there is an urgent need to accelerate the adoption of green and sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. The integration of flexible thermoelectrics with other various energy conversion technologies plays a crucial role, enabling the conversion of multiple forms of energy such as temperature differentials, solar energy, mechanical force, and humidity into electricity. The development of these technologies lays the foundation for sustainable power solutions and promotes research progress in energy conversion. Given the complexity and rapid development of this field, this review provides a detailed overview of the progress of multifunctional integrated energy conversion and storage technologies based on thermoelectric conversion. The focus is on improving material performance, optimizing the design of integrated device structures, and achieving device flexibility to expand their application scenarios, particularly the integration and multi-functionalization of wearable energy conversion technologies. Additionally, we discuss the current development bottlenecks and future directions to facilitate the continuous advancement of this field.

Abstract:The field of flexible electronics is a crucial driver of technological advancement, with a strong connection to human life and a unique role in various areas such as wearable devices and healthcare. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for flexible energy storage devices (FESDs) to cater to the energy storage needs of various forms of flexible products. FESDs can be classified into three categories based on spatial dimension, all of which share the features of excellent electrochemical performance, reliable safety, and superb flexibility. In this review, the application scenarios of FESDs are introduced and the main representative devices applied in disparate fields are summarized firstly. More specifically, it focuses on three types of FESDs in matched application scenarios from both structural and material aspects. Abstract:Energy storage devices are arousing increasing interest due to their key role in next-generation electronics. Integration is widely explored as a general and effective strategy aiming at high performances. Recent progress in integrating a variety of functions into electrochemical energy storage devices is carefully described. Through integration at the level of materials: flexible, stretchable, responsive, and self-healing devices are discussed to highlight the state-of-the-art multi-functional electronics. Through the integration at the level of devices, the incorporation of photovoltaic and piezoelectric devices is detailed to reflect the advances in self-powering electronics. Integrated energy storage devices are presented for wearable applications to indicate a new growth direction. The main challenges and important directions are summarized to offer some useful clues for future development.

Abstract:Flexible electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density are essential for powering portable and wearable electronics. In recent years, numerous researchers have been dedicated to the development of flexible energy storage devices, achieving significant progress in energy and power density. Textiles, owing to their exceptional flexibility, lightweight nature, high specific surface area, and comfortable wearability, have emerged as a rapidly advancing frontier in energy storage research. However, challenges remain in achieving a balance between electrochemical properties, mechanical performance, and processing techniques. This review initiates by introducing device configurations, energy storage mechanisms, and key parameters for electrochemical evaluations. Exploiting the unique attributes of textile substrates and technologies, we provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art research on textile-based supercapacitors and batteries, with a focus on manufacturing methods for conductive textile electrodes, integration techniques, and electrochemical accomplishments. Addressing flexibility, stretchability, and washability of energy textiles, we analyze challenges and propose solutions, offering insights for future developments in flexible energy storage technologies.

Abstract:With the emergence of flexible/stretchable electronic devices, flexible supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted widespread interest in developing lightweight, thin, elastic and efficient portable/wearable energy storage devices that show promising applications in hybrid electric vehicles, uninterruptible power supplies and "smart textiles". Along with a brief description on the general information about flexible SCs, this feature article focuses on recent advances in flexible SCs including the planar-structured flexible SCs and the new-type fiber SCs as well as fiber integrated/hybrid energy systems containing fiber SCs. The construction of efficient active materials on flexible substrates (e.g. plastics, papers, fabrics/textiles, fibrous substrates, etc.) and feasible strategies to achieve high-performance flexible SCs are highlighted. Perspectives on the research trends of flexible SCs toward practical applications are proposed.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics are a type of mechanically robust electronics which can be bended, folded, crumpled and stretched and represent the emerging direction towards next-generation wearable and implantable devices. Unlike existing electronics based on rigid Si technologies, stretchable devices can conform to the complex non-coplanar surfaces and provide unique functionalities which are unreachable with simple extension of conventional technologies. Stretchable energy storage and conversion devices are the key components for the fabrication of complete and independent stretchable systems. In this review, we present the recent progresses in the developments of stretchable power sources including supercapacitors, batteries and solar cells. Representative structural and material designs to impart stretchability to the originally rigid devices are discussed. Advantages and drawbacks associated with the fabrication methods are also analysed. Summaries of the research progresses along with future development directions for this exciting field are also presented.
