Abstract:Chemically self–chargeable devices: The diagram exhibits the chemically self–chargeable battery with the by the oxygen in the air. This minireview introduced the general self–charge mechanisms and summarizes the recent advances of various chemically self–charged batteries and other compact devices like electrochromic device and highlights the remaining challenges and future opportunities. Self–charging devices integrating ambient energy conversion technologies into batteries are attracting extensive attention in interdisciplinary research fields. However, the integrated devices such solar/mechanical/heat chargeable systems rely on the accessibility of the energy and possess rather complicated configuration. In recent years, the chemically self–chargeable batteries and devices have attracted wide attention due to its self–powering functionality, simplified pact structure and environment adaptability. This minireview will focus on the connotation and denotation of the chemically self–chargeable batteries and representative applications beyond conventional energy installations.

Smart Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices with Self-Protection and Self-Adaptation Abilities

Abstract:Currently, with booming development and worldwide usage of rechargeable electrochemical energy storage devices, their safety issues, operation stability, service life, and user experience are garnering special attention. Smart and intelligent energy storage devices with self-protection and self-adaptation abilities aiming to address these challenges are being developed with great urgency. In this Progress Report, we highlight recent achievements in the field of smart energy storage systems that could early-detect incoming internal short circuits and self-protect against thermal runaway. Moreover, intelligent devices that are able to take actions and self-adapt in response to external mechanical disruption or deformation, i.e., exhibiting self-healing or shape-memory behaviors, are discussed. Finally, insights into the future development of smart rechargeable energy storage devices are provided.

Abstract:The booming wearable/portable electronic devices industry has stimulated the progress of supporting flexible energy storage devices. Excellent performance of flexible devices not only requires the component units of each device to maintain the original performance under external forces, but also demands the overall device to be flexible in response to external fields. However, flexible energy storage devices inevitably occur mechanical damages (extrusion, impact, vibration)/electrical damages (overcharge, over-discharge, external short circuit) during long-term complex deformation conditions, causing serious performance degradation and safety risks. Inspired by the healing phenomenon of nature, endowing energy storage devices with self-healing capability has become a promising strategy to effectively improve the durability and functionality of devices. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the latest progress in intrinsic self-healing chemistry for energy storage devices. Firstly, the main intrinsic self-healing mechanism is introduced. Then, the research situation of electrodes, electrolytes, artificial interface layers and integrated devices based on intrinsic self-healing and advanced characterization technology is reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and perspective are provided. We believe this critical review will contribute to the development of intrinsic self-healing chemistry in the flexible energy storage field.

Abstract:Abstract As the world works to move away from traditional energy sources, effective efficient energy storage devices have become a key factor for success. The emergence of unconventional electrochemical energy storage devices, including hybrid batteries, hybrid redox flow cells and bacterial batteries, is part of the solution. These alternative electrochemical cell configurations provide materials and operating condition flexibility while offering high-energy conversion efficiency and modularity of design-to-design devices. The power of these diverse devices ranges from a few milliwatts to several megawatts. Manufacturing durable electronic and point-of-care devices is possible due to the development of all-solid-state batteries with efficient electrodes for long cycling and high energy density. New batteries made of earth-abundant metal ions are approaching the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Costs are being reduced with the advent of flow batteries with engineered redox molecules for high energy density and membrane-free power generating electrochemical cells, which utilize liquid dynamics and interfaces (solid, liquid, and gaseous) for electrolyte separation. These batteries support electrode regeneration strategies for chemical and bio-batteries reducing battery energy costs. Other batteries have different benefits, e.g., carbon-neutral Li-CO 2 batteries consume CO 2 and generate power, offering dual-purpose energy storage and carbon sequestration. This work considers the recent technological advances of energy storage devices. Their transition from conventional to unconventional battery designs is examined to identify operational flexibilities, overall energy storage/conversion efficiency and application compatibility. Finally, a list of facilities for large-scale deployment of major electrochemical energy storage routes is provided. Graphical abstract

Abstract:<p>The chemical heterointerfaces in hybrid electrode materials play an important role in overcoming the intrinsic drawbacks of individual materials and thus expedite the in-depth development of electrochemical energy storage. Benefiting from the three enhancement effects of accelerating charge transport, increasing the number of storage sites, and reinforcing structural stability, the chemical heterointerfaces have attracted extensive interest and the electrochemical performances of hybrid electrode materials have been significantly optimized. In this review, recent advances regarding chemical heterointerface engineering in hybrid electrode materials are systematically summarized. Especially, the intrinsic behaviors of chemical heterointerfaces on hybrid electrode materials are refined based on built-in electric field, van der Waals interaction, lattice mismatch and connection, electron cloud bias and chemical bond, and their combination. The strategies for introducing chemical heterointerfaces are classified into in situ local transformation, in situ growth, cosynthesis, and other strategy. The recent progress about the chemical heterointerfaces engineering specially focusing on metal-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and Li–S batteries are introduced in detail. Furthermore, the classification and characterization of chemical heterointerfaces are briefly described. Finally, the emerging challenges and perspectives about future directions of chemical heterointerface engineering are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Energy storage devices are arousing increasing interest due to their key role in next-generation electronics. Integration is widely explored as a general and effective strategy aiming at high performances. Recent progress in integrating a variety of functions into electrochemical energy storage devices is carefully described. Through integration at the level of materials: flexible, stretchable, responsive, and self-healing devices are discussed to highlight the state-of-the-art multi-functional electronics. Through the integration at the level of devices, the incorporation of photovoltaic and piezoelectric devices is detailed to reflect the advances in self-powering electronics. Integrated energy storage devices are presented for wearable applications to indicate a new growth direction. The main challenges and important directions are summarized to offer some useful clues for future development.

Abstract:In the pursuit of convenient and healthy lives, human body electronic devices with interactive, medical, and communication functions have been gradually developed, propelling research into high-safety aqueous batteries as energy hubs. Despite extensive research progress, the application of aqueous batteries in human body electronic devices is still at the proof-of-concept stage. In this Focus Review, we comprehensively summarize the design strategies and research advances in the rational coupling of electrochemical properties with mechanical properties, degradability, and biocompatibility for aqueous wearable and implantable degradable batteries. The challenges and perspectives for the further development of aqueous batteries for human body electronic devices are outlined to guide research toward next-generation aqueous batteries for practical applications in the human body.

Towards Self-Driving Labs for Better Batteries: Accelerating Electrolyte Discovery with Automation and Bayesian Optimization

Abstract:The integration of automation and data-driven methodologies offer a promising approach to accelerating materials discovery in energy storage research. Thus far, in battery research, coin-cell assembly has advanced to become near fully- automated but remains largely disconnected from data-driven methods, which have been primarily developed for computational or multi-fidelity datasets. To bridge the disconnect, this work presents a self-driving laboratory framework designed to accelerate electrolyte discovery by integrating automated coin-cell assembly, galvanostatic cycling of LiFePO4||Li4Ti5O12 full cells, and Bayesian optimization for selecting subsequent experiments based on prior results. The integration of Bayesian optimization highlights machine-intelligent experimental decision-making enabling closed-loop experimentation-analysis workflow for self-driving laboratories. The study focuses on an organic-aqueous hybrid electrolyte system comprising four co-solvents dimethyl sulfoxide, trimethyl phosphate, acetonitrile, and water—and two salts, lithium perchlorate and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). Using this framework, high- performing electrolyte formulations were identified, with water content emerging as a key performance factor. Online electrochemical mass spectrometry provided insights into hydrogen evolution as a significant side reaction, while revealing limited effects due to co-solvent interactions. The results highlight the potential of combining Bayesian optimization with autonomous experimentation for improving efficiency in materials research, while contributing new insights into electrolyte behavior for next-generation aqueous lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Electrochemical intercalation/conversion/alloying reactions, as one of the most important solid-state redox reactions, play essential roles in electrochemical energy storage systems. First-principles calculations hold great potential to fundamental understandings of reversible intercalation/conversion/alloying reactions, which may provide insights into designing high-performance electrode materials. Recently, electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage are significantly promising in achieving high energy and high power densities, perfectly fulfilling the rigorous requirements of metal-ion batteries and electrochemical capacitors as the next generation of energy storage devices. Different from traditional electrode materials, the electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage enable the charging and discharging processes within the order of minutes or even seconds because of the enhanced surface-controlled charge storage. By combining experimental characterizations and computational simulations, this review summaries the state-of-the-art of design strategies for electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage. Moreover, the research opportunities and key technical challenges are suggested regarding further research in this thriving field.

Abstract:<p>Electrochemical energy storage has become a key part of portable medical and electronic devices, as well as ground and aerial vehicles. Unfortunately, conventionally produced supercapacitors and batteries often cannot be easily integrated into many emerging technologies such as smart textiles, smart jewelry, paper magazines or books, and packages with data-collection or other unique capabilities, electrical cables, flexible wearable electronics and displays, flexible solar cells, epidermal sensors, and others in order to enhance their design aesthetics, convenience, system simplicity, and reliability. In addition, conventional energy storage devices that cannot conform to various shapes, are typically limited to a single function, and cannot additionally provide, for example, load bearing functionality or impact/ballistic protection to reduce the system weight or volume. Commercial devices cannot be activated by various stimuli, be able to self-destroy or biodegrade over time, trigger drug release, operate as sensors, antennas, or actuators. However, a growing number of future technologies will demand batteries and hybrid devices with the abilities to seamlessly integrate into systems and adapt to various shapes, forms, and design functions. Here we summarize recent progress and challenges made in the development of mostly nanostructured and nanoengineered materials as well as fabrication routes for energy storage devices that offer (i) multifunctionality, (ii) mechanical resiliency and flexibility and (iii) integration for more elegant, lighter, smaller and smarter designs. The geometries of device structures and materials are considered to critically define their roles in mechanics and functionality. With these understandings, we outline a future roadmap for the development, scaleup, and manufacturing of such materials and devices.</p>

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices integrated with smart functions are highly attractive for powering the next-generation electronics in the coming era of artificial intelligence. In this regard, exploiting functional electrolytes represents a viable strategy to realize smart functions in EES devices. In this review, recent advances in the development of functional electrolytes for smart EES devices like rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors are presented. Various stimulus-responsive electrolytes are first summarized, including temperature-, mechanical force-, voltage-, magnetism-, and light-responsive electrolytes. Emphasis is placed on the working principles of stimulus-responsive electrolytes and their specific problem-solving functions in EES devices. Then, the latest advances in electrochromic and self-healing electrolytes used for smart EES devices are discussed. Finally, key challenges and research opportunities related to functional electrolyte design and smart EES device development are envisioned, with the goal of accelerating further research in this thriving field.

Abstract:Aqueous electrochemical energy storage devices (AEESDs) exhibit tremendous potential for grid-scale energy storage due to their high ionic conductivity, high safety, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the improvement of energy density is always accompanied by the loss of power density due to the sluggish ion migration in the bulk of the electrode. Redox electrolytes are proposed as one of the most promising strategies to expand from electrode materials to the whole device to improve the energy density and power density of AEESDs simultaneously. It is thus vital to understand the electrochemical behaviors and mechanism of the coupling system between the electrode and redox electrolyte during the electrochemical charge-discharge process. In this study, the electrochemical kinetic evolution model of the redox electrolyte in the electrode is established via quasi-steady electrochemical measurement and in situ Raman study, revealing the redox reaction of electrolyte originates from charge transfer between ions in electric double layer (EDL). Accordingly, the electrochemical performances are optimized by adjusting the electrolyte concentration. The decline of coulombic efficiency is systematically analyzed, which can be attributed to ionic drifting during a redox reaction. This study may pioneer designing the advanced electrochemical energy storage device by integrating electrode materials and electrolytes.

Abstract:A priori and reliable simulations can enable timely and cost-efficient design and discovery of materials for energy. Therefore, ‘ Let’s Start from Computing ’ is an optimal approach to initialize modern day R&D processes. In energy storage, beyond lithium-ion (BLI) research has the potential to revolutionize consumer electronics including portable and stationary power, transportation, and grid energy storage sectors. Multi-valent (Mg, Ca, Zn) energy storage or economically viable monovalent (Na, K) batteries, high-density metal-air, metal-sulfur batteries, or grid-storage systems are considered in the beyond lithium-ion research and development. All these R&D efforts require significant fundamental knowledge via a priori computations for materials discovery, property prediction, and optimization . Atomistic modeling when coupled with reliable Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches can provide accurate insights to accelerate discovery of optimal electrolytes, electrodes, and membranes for BLI systems to reduce the cost . Thus, coupled with AI and multi-scale simulations techniques, atomistic modeling can address prediction of molecular level properties of materials (redox potentials, solvation, spectroscopic, and reactivity) to down-select optimal materials or material combinations . In this presentation, I will describe some of our recent efforts in active learning coupled with large scale first principles simulations to down select/optimize desired molecules for flow battery technology. This concept can be utilized for design of experiments using autonomous experimentation. Additionally, I will describe some of our quantum chemistry-informed molecular property predictions redoxmers and liquid organic hydrogen carriers. In addition to molecules, I will present. Autonomous discovery of battery electrolytes with robotic experimentation and machine-learning

Abstract:Innovations in batteries take years to formulate and commercialize, requiring extensive experimentation during the design and optimization phases. We approached the design and selection of a battery electrolyte through a black-box optimization algorithm directly integrated into a robotic test-stand. We report here the discovery of a novel battery electrolyte by this experiment completely guided by the machine-learning software without human intervention. Motivated by the recent trend toward super-concentrated aqueous electrolytes for high-performance batteries, we utilize Dragonfly - a Bayesian machine-learning software package - to search mixtures of commonly used lithium and sodium salts for super-concentrated aqueous electrolytes with wide electrochemical stability windows. Dragonfly autonomously managed the robotic test-stand, recommending electrolyte designs to test and receiving experimental feedback in real time. In 40 hours of continuous experimentation over a four-dimensional design space with millions of potential candidates, Dragonfly discovered a novel, mixed-anion aqueous sodium electrolyte with a wider electrochemical stability window than state-of-the-art sodium electrolyte. A human-guided design process may have missed this optimal electrolyte. This result demonstrates the possibility of integrating robotics with machine-learning to rapidly and autonomously discover novel battery materials.

Abstract:Organic cathode‐based batteries experience rapid capacity fading, low voltages and understudied molecular‐level electrochemical processes. Here, an overview of the molecular electrode design and functional group tuning is provided for stable capacities and high voltages while considering the fundamental electrochemical properties (thermodynamics, kinetics and mass transport) that dictate the molecular level characteristics of organic electrodes in batteries. The transition toward electric‐powered devices is anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing the global net‐zero carbon emission agenda aimed at mitigating greenhouse effects. This shift necessitates a parallel focus on the development of energy storage materials capable of supporting intermittent renewable energy sources. While lithium‐ion batteries, featuring inorganic electrode materials, exhibit desirable electrochemical characteristics for energy storage and transport, concerns about the toxicity and ethical implications associated with mining transition metals in their electrodes have prompted a search for environmentally safe alternatives. Organic electrodes have emerged as promising and sustainable alternatives for batteries. This review paper will delve into the recent advancements in nature‐inspired electrode design aimed at addressing critical challenges such as capacity degradation due to dissolution, low operating voltages, and the intricate molecular‐level processes governing macroscopic electrochemical properties.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy-storage systems such as supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries require complex intertwined networks that provide fast transport pathways for ions and electrons without interfering with their energy density. Self-assembly of nanomaterials into hierarchical structures offers exciting possibilities to create such pathways. This article summarizes recent research achievements in self-assembled zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional nanomaterials, ordered pore structure materials, and the interfaces between these. We analyze how self-assembly strategies can create storage architectures that improve device performance toward higher energy densities, longevity, rate capability, and device safety. At the end, the remaining challenges of scalable low-cost manufacturing and future opportunities such as self-healing are discussed.

Abstract:Given the escalating demand for wearable electronics, there is an urgent need to explore cost-effective and environmentally friendly flexible energy storage devices with exceptional electrochemical properties. However, the existing types of flexible energy storage devices encounter challenges in effectively integrating mechanical and electrochemical performances. This review is intended to provide strategies for the design of components in flexible energy storage devices (electrode materials, gel electrolytes, and separators) with the aim of developing energy storage systems with excellent performance and deformability. Firstly, a concise overview is provided on the structural characteristics and properties of carbon-based materials and conductive polymer materials utilized in flexible energy storage devices. Secondly, the fabrication process and strategies for optimizing their structures are summarized. Subsequently, a comprehensive review is presented regarding the applications of carbon-based materials and conductive polymer materials in various fields of flexible energy storage, such as supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and zinc-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and future directions for next-generation flexible energy storage systems are proposed.
