Abstract:In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel bio-source derived activated carbon-supported cobalt hexacyanoferrate (Co-HCF@AC) hybrid photocatalyst for the effective degradation of hazardous organic dyes, specifically crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG). The Co-HCF@AC composite was synthesized using a simple co-precipitation method, followed by chemical activation of rice husk-derived carbon. The essential characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), UV-DRS spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed the successful synthesis of the hybrid material, revealing its crystalline phase, morphological features, and chemical composition. Photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that Co-HCF@AC exhibited significantly enhanced degradation efficiency, achieving 97.2% degradation of 10 ppm CV and 95.5% degradation of 10 ppm MG under UV–visible irradiation within 90 min. The kinetic studies revealed that the degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with Co-HCF@AC showing rate constants of 0.00959 × 10 −4 min −1 for CV and 0.00942 × 10 −4 min −1 for MG, significantly higher than the pristine Co-HCF. Electrochemical investigations, including photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), indicated a threefold increase in photocurrent density and a reduction in charge transfer resistance for the hybrid catalyst. The reusability analysis showed only a 4% decrease in activity over seven cycles, underscoring the stability and potential of Co-HCF@AC for practical wastewater treatment applications. This novel strategy of synthesis of Co-HCF@AC might provide a new perspective for the removal of toxic dyes from contaminated water sources.
