Abstract:In this paper, we provide some novel results concerning the behavior of UknUk modulo Un , where (Un)n∈N is a Lucas sequence of the first kind. As a consequence, we obtain a primality criterion which does not seem to appear in the literature.

Abstract:It is known that all terms $U_n$ of a classical regular Lucas sequence have a primitive prime divisor if $n>30$. In addition, a complete description of all regular Lucas sequences and their terms $U_n$, $2\leq n\leq 30$, which do not have a primitive divisor is also known. Here, we prove comparable results for Lucas sequences in polynomial rings, correcting some previous theorem on the same subject. The first part of our paper develops some elements of Lucas theory in several abstract settings before proving our main theorem in polynomial rings.

Abstract:In this work, we prove that a sequence arising from modular forms under some prescribed conditions for $\Gamma$ that is $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ or an Atkin--Lehner extension of $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ must satisfy the Lucas congruences modulo any prime. As an implication, we completely affirm all the conjectural Lucas congruences that were recently posed by Cooper and reinterpret a number of known results.

Abstract:In 1876, Edouard Lucas showed that if an integer $b$ exists such that $b^{n-1} \equiv 1 (\mathrm{mod} \ n)$ and $b^{(n-1)/p} \not\equiv 1( \mathrm{mod} \ n)$ for all prime divisors $p$ of $n-1$ , then $n$ is prime, a result known as Lucas's converse of Fermat's little theorem. This result was considerably improved by Henry Pocklington in 1914 when he showed that it's not necessary to know all the prime factors of $n-1$ in order to determine if $n$ is prime. In this paper we optimize Pocklington's primality test for integers of the form $ap^{k}+1$ where $p$ is prime, $a<p$, $k\ge 1$. An extension of Lucas's converse of Fermat's little theorem is given. We also prove a new general-purpose primality test that requires that only a single odd prime divisor of $n-1$ be found for the test to be implemented. Contrary to the well-known result: There are infinitely many Fermat pseudoprimes to any base $b$; In this paper we prove the finitude of Fermat pseudoprimes in some forms of integers.
Average Case Error Estimates of the Strong Lucas Test

Abstract:Reliable probabilistic primality tests are fundamental in public-key cryptography. In adversarial scenarios, a composite with a high probability of passing a specific primality test could be chosen. In such cases, we need worst-case error estimates for the test. However, in many scenarios the numbers are randomly chosen and thus have significantly smaller error probability. Therefore, we are interested in average case error estimates. In this paper, we establish such bounds for the strong Lucas primality test, as only worst-case, but no average case error bounds, are currently available. This allows us to use this test with more confidence. We examine an algorithm that draws odd $k$-bit integers uniformly and independently, runs $t$ independent iterations of the strong Lucas test with randomly chosen parameters, and outputs the first number that passes all $t$ consecutive rounds. We attain numerical upper bounds on the probability on returing a composite. Furthermore, we consider a modified version of this algorithm that excludes integers divisible by small primes, resulting in improved bounds. Additionally, we classify the numbers that contribute most to our estimate.

Abstract:In 1977, Hugh Williams studied Lucas pseudoprimes to all Lucas sequences of a fixed discriminant. These are composite numbers analogous to Carmichael numbers and they satisfy a Korselt-like criterion: $n$ must be a product of distinct primes and $p_i - \delta_{p_i} | n - \delta_n $ where $\delta_n$ is a Legendre symbol with the first argument being the discriminant of the Lucas sequence. Motivated by tabulation algorithms for Carmichael numbers, we give algorithms to tabulate these numbers and provide some asymptotic analysis of the algorithms. We show that there are only finitely many absolute Lucas pseudoprimes $n = \prod_{i = 1}^k p_i$ with a given set of $k-2$ prime factors. We also provide the first known tabulation for discriminant $5$.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is twofold: (1) extend theory on certain statistics in the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences modulo $m$ to the Lucas sequences $U := \left(U_n(p,q)\right)_{n \geq 0}$ and $V := \left(V_n(p,q)\right)_{n \geq 0}$, and (2) apply some of this theory to a novel graphical approach of $U$ and $V$ modulo $m$. Upon placing the cycle of repeating sequence terms in a circle, several fascinating patterns which would otherwise be overlooked emerge. We generalize a wealth of known Fibonacci and Lucas statistical identities to the $U$ and $V$ settings using primary sources such as Lucas in 1878, Carmichael in 1913, Wall in 1960, and Vinson in 1963, amongst others. We use many of these generalized identities to form the theoretical basis for our graphical results. Based on the order of $m$, defined as $\omega(m) := \frac{\pi(m)}{e(m)}$, where $\pi(m)$ is the period of $m$ and $e(m)$ is the entry point of $m$, we describe behaviors shared by $U$ and $V$ with parameters $q = \pm 1$. In particular, we exhibit some tantalizing examples in the following three sequence pairs: Fibonacci and Lucas, Pell and associated Pell, and balancing and Lucas-balancing.

From Worst to Average Case to Incremental Search Bounds of the Strong Lucas Test

Abstract:The strong Lucas test is a widely used probabilistic primality test in cryptographic libraries. When combined with the Miller-Rabin primality test, it forms the Baillie-PSW primality test, known for its absence of false positives, undermining the relevance of a complete understanding of the strong Lucas test. In primality testing, the worst-case error probability serves as an upper bound on the likelihood of incorrectly identifying a composite as prime. For the strong Lucas test, this bound is $4/15$ for odd composites, not products of twin primes. On the other hand, the average-case error probability indicates the probability that a randomly chosen integer is inaccurately classified as prime by the test. This bound is especially important for practical applications, where we test primes that are randomly generated and not generated by an adversary. The error probability of $4/15$ does not directly carry over due to the scarcity of primes, and whether this estimate holds has not yet been established in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by demonstrating that an integer passing $t$ consecutive test rounds, alongside additional standard tests of low computational cost, is indeed prime with a probability greater than $1-(4/15)^t$ for all $t\geq 1$. Furthermore, we introduce error bounds for the incremental search algorithm based on the strong Lucas test, as there are no established bounds up to date as well. Rather than independent selection, in this approach, the candidate is chosen uniformly at random, with subsequent candidates determined by incrementally adding 2. This modification reduces the need for random bits and enhances the efficiency of trial division computation further.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that each non-degenerate Lucas sequence contains only finitely many terms which can be written as products of double factorials or as sums or differences of double factorials. In particular, we find all the solutions to the products of double factorials which are sums or differences of two Fibonacci numbers, and Fibonacci numbers which are sums or differences of two double factorials.

Abstract:In 2009, Luca and Nicolae [ ПҶ(Fm)=Fn , Integers 9 (2009) A30] proved that the only Fibonacci numbers whose Euler totient function is another Fibonacci number are 1,2 , and 3 . In 2015, Faye and Luca [Pell numbers whose Euler function is a Pell number, Publ. Inst. Math. 101 (115) (2017) 231вҖ“245] proved that the only Pell numbers whose Euler totient function is another Pell number are 1 and 2 . Here, we add to these two results and prove that for any fixed natural number PвүҘ3 , if we define the sequence (un)n as u0=0 , u1=1 , and un=PunвҲ’1+unвҲ’2 for all nвүҘ2 , then the only solution to the Diophantine equation ПҶ(un)=um is ПҶ(u1)=ПҶ(1)=1=u1 .

Abstract:We describe an explicit generalized Lucasian test to determine the primality of numbers $h\cdot2^n\pm1$ when $h\nequiv0\pmod{17}$. This test is by means of fixed seeds which depend only on $h$. In particular when $h=16^m-1$ with $m$ odd, our paper gives a primality test with some fixed seeds depending only on $h$. Comparing the results of W. Bosma(1993) and P. Berrizbeitia and T. G. Berry(2004), our result adds new values of $h$ along with this line. Octic and bioctic reciprocity are used to deduce our result.

Abstract:In this paper we study the sets of integers which are $n$-th terms of Lucas sequences. We establish lower- and upper bounds for the size of these sets. These bounds are sharp for $n$ sufficiently large. We also develop bounds on the growth order of the terms of Lucas sequences that are independent of the parameters of the sequence, which is a new feature.

Abstract:This paper explores the intricate relationships between Lucas numbers and Diophantine equations, offering significant contributions to the field of number theory. We first establish that the equation regarding Lucas number $L_n = 3x^2$ has a unique solution in positive integers, specifically $(n, x) = (2, 1)$, by analyzing the congruence properties of Lucas numbers modulo $4$ and Jacobi symbols. We also prove that a Fibonacci number $F_n$ can be of the form $F_n=5x^2$ only when $(n,x)=(5,1)$. Expanding our investigation, we prove that the equation $L_n^2+L_{n+1}^2=x^2$ admits a unique solution $(n,x)=(2,5)$. In conclusion, we determine all non-negative integer solutions $(n, \alpha, x)$ to the equation $L_n^\alpha + L_{n+1}^\alpha = x^2$, where $L_n$ represents the $n$-th term in the Lucas sequence.
