Abstract:It is known that all terms $U_n$ of a classical regular Lucas sequence have a primitive prime divisor if $n>30$. In addition, a complete description of all regular Lucas sequences and their terms $U_n$, $2\leq n\leq 30$, which do not have a primitive divisor is also known. Here, we prove comparable results for Lucas sequences in polynomial rings, correcting some previous theorem on the same subject. The first part of our paper develops some elements of Lucas theory in several abstract settings before proving our main theorem in polynomial rings.

Abstract:Let u(n) be the n-th term of a Lucas sequence or a Lehmer <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sequence.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this article we shall establish an estimate from below for the greatest prime factor of u(n) which is of the form nexp(logn/104loglogn). In so doing we are able to resolve a question of Schinzel from 1962 and a conjecture of Erdos from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://1965.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> addition we are able to give the first general improvement on results of Bang from 1886 and Carmichael from 1912.

Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain the strong divisibility property for the Lucas and Lehmer sequences in Dedekind domains, and then establish analogues of Zsigmondy's theorem and the primitive divisor results for such sequences in function fields.

Abstract:In 1977, Hugh Williams studied Lucas pseudoprimes to all Lucas sequences of a fixed discriminant. These are composite numbers analogous to Carmichael numbers and they satisfy a Korselt-like criterion: $n$ must be a product of distinct primes and $p_i - \delta_{p_i} | n - \delta_n $ where $\delta_n$ is a Legendre symbol with the first argument being the discriminant of the Lucas sequence. Motivated by tabulation algorithms for Carmichael numbers, we give algorithms to tabulate these numbers and provide some asymptotic analysis of the algorithms. We show that there are only finitely many absolute Lucas pseudoprimes $n = \prod_{i = 1}^k p_i$ with a given set of $k-2$ prime factors. We also provide the first known tabulation for discriminant $5$.

Abstract:A set of integers greater than 1 is primitive if no member in the set divides another. Erdős proved in 1935 that the series $f(A) = \sum_{a\in A}1/(a \log a)$ is uniformly bounded over all choices of primitive sets $A$. In 1986 he asked if this bound is attained for the set of prime numbers. In this article we answer in the affirmative. As further applications of the method, we make progress towards a question of Erdős, Sárközy, and Szemerédi from 1968. We also refine the classical Davenport-Erdős theorem on infinite divisibility chains, and extend a result of Erdős, Sárközy, and Szemerédi from 1966.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a non-torsion point on an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ and consider the sequence $\{B_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of the denominators of $x(nP)$. We prove that every term of the sequence of the $B_n$ has a primitive divisor for $n$ greater than an effectively computable constant that we will explicitly compute. This constant will depend only on the model defining the curve.

Abstract:In this work, we prove that a sequence arising from modular forms under some prescribed conditions for $\Gamma$ that is $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ or an Atkin--Lehner extension of $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ must satisfy the Lucas congruences modulo any prime. As an implication, we completely affirm all the conjectural Lucas congruences that were recently posed by Cooper and reinterpret a number of known results.

Abstract:In this paper we study the sets of integers which are $n$-th terms of Lucas sequences. We establish lower- and upper bounds for the size of these sets. These bounds are sharp for $n$ sufficiently large. We also develop bounds on the growth order of the terms of Lucas sequences that are independent of the parameters of the sequence, which is a new feature.

Abstract:Let $n$ be a primitive non-deficient number where $n=p_1^{a_1}p_2^{a_2} \cdots p_k^{a_k}$ where $p_1, p_2 \cdots p_k$ are distinct primes. We prove that there exists an $i$ such that $$p_i^{a_i+1} < 2k(p_1p_2p_3\cdots p_k).$$ We conjecture that in fact one can always find an $i$ such that ${p_i}^{a_i+1} < p_1p_2p_3\cdots p_k$.

Abstract:In 1984, H. W. Lenstra described an algorithm finding divisors of $N$ congruent to $r \mod S$. When $S^3 > N$, this algorithm runs in polynomial time and hence factors $N$ in time $N^{1/3+o(1)}$. Lenstra's algorithm relies on a sign change in a constructed sequence and so cannot be adapted directly to larger euclidean number rings. We present a new method that generalizes to a larger class of euclidean rings and the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. The algorithm is implemented and timed confirming its polynomial run time.

On Certain Diophantine Equations Involving Lucas Numbers

Abstract:This paper explores the intricate relationships between Lucas numbers and Diophantine equations, offering significant contributions to the field of number theory. We first establish that the equation regarding Lucas number $L_n = 3x^2$ has a unique solution in positive integers, specifically $(n, x) = (2, 1)$, by analyzing the congruence properties of Lucas numbers modulo $4$ and Jacobi symbols. We also prove that a Fibonacci number $F_n$ can be of the form $F_n=5x^2$ only when $(n,x)=(5,1)$. Expanding our investigation, we prove that the equation $L_n^2+L_{n+1}^2=x^2$ admits a unique solution $(n,x)=(2,5)$. In conclusion, we determine all non-negative integer solutions $(n, \alpha, x)$ to the equation $L_n^\alpha + L_{n+1}^\alpha = x^2$, where $L_n$ represents the $n$-th term in the Lucas sequence.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that each non-degenerate Lucas sequence contains only finitely many terms which can be written as products of double factorials or as sums or differences of double factorials. In particular, we find all the solutions to the products of double factorials which are sums or differences of two Fibonacci numbers, and Fibonacci numbers which are sums or differences of two double factorials.

Abstract:In 2009, Luca and Nicolae [ ПҶ(Fm)=Fn , Integers 9 (2009) A30] proved that the only Fibonacci numbers whose Euler totient function is another Fibonacci number are 1,2 , and 3 . In 2015, Faye and Luca [Pell numbers whose Euler function is a Pell number, Publ. Inst. Math. 101 (115) (2017) 231вҖ“245] proved that the only Pell numbers whose Euler totient function is another Pell number are 1 and 2 . Here, we add to these two results and prove that for any fixed natural number PвүҘ3 , if we define the sequence (un)n as u0=0 , u1=1 , and un=PunвҲ’1+unвҲ’2 for all nвүҘ2 , then the only solution to the Diophantine equation ПҶ(un)=um is ПҶ(u1)=ПҶ(1)=1=u1 .

Abstract:The first purpose of our paper is to show how Hooley's celebrated method leading to his conditional proof of the Artin conjecture on primitive roots can be combined with the Hardy–Littlewood circle method. We do so by studying the number of representations of an odd integer as a sum of three primes, all of which have prescribed primitive roots. The second purpose is to analyse the singular series. In particular, using results of Lenstra, Stevenhagen and Moree, we provide a partial factorisation as an Euler product and prove that this does not extend to a complete factorisation.
