Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the differences and commonalities between Chinese literature and Western literature. First of all, the characteristics of the two are compared from three aspects, namely, presentation methods, thematic contents and literary forms. Chinese literature focuses on mood, ambiguity, and emphasizes the natural flow of emotions; while Western literature attaches importance to structure, logic, and pursues innovation in form. In terms of thematic content, Chinese literature tends to express personal emotions and expresses the harmony between human beings and nature and society; while Western literature focuses on the conflict between individuals and society and emphasizes freedom, equality and human rights. In terms of literary forms, Chinese literature coexists in various forms such as poetry, prose and novels, while Western literature takes novels, dramas and poems as its main forms. Secondly, this study explores the reasons for the differences between the two in terms of cultural background, writers' creative concepts and readers' acceptance. Chinese literature is deeply influenced by traditional cultural ideas such as Confucianism and Taoism, emphasizing moral education and philosophy of life; while Western literature is influenced by ancient Greek and Roman myths as well as religious beliefs such as Christianity, focusing on the inner world of man and exploring human nature. In terms of writers' creative concepts, Chinese writers tend to focus on social harmony from the perspective of traditional morality and ethics, while Western writers advocate the liberation of individuality and the pursuit of the realization of personal values. In terms of readers' acceptance, Chinese literature focuses on aesthetic experience and emotional resonance, while Western literature pays more attention to logical reasoning and thinking. The comparative study of Chinese literature and Western literature can help us better understand the diversity of world literature and enrich our concepts of literary aesthetics and creation. At the same time, by learning from the excellent achievements of Western literature, we can promote the innovation and development of Chinese literature.

Abstract:The communication between Wang Tao(1828-1897) and protestant missionaries in the Late Qing Dynasty focused on the Western religion and learning.When discussing Western learning,Wang Tao also used the term "literature," a term that would have great influence on the developmental history of pre-modern Chinese literary thoughts.While he had a systematic exploration into the development of Western learning and the Jesuits’ works in the Late Ming,Wang Tao didn’t elaborate on the concept of the term "wenxue(literature)," although he had mentioned Western poetry and other genres as well as some important Greek,Roman and British poets.Wang Tao’s experience and his understanding of Western literature were developed after the protestant missionaries introduced the Western concept of literature into China and recognized the term "wenxue" as the equivalent to "literature." The historical significance of the term still holds value to contemporary academic explorations into literary and intellectual history.

Abstract:Since the establishment of Chinese comparative literature,the study of the literary relationship between China and the West has wielded groundbreaking influence on Chinese literary study.However there is a shared anxiety among Chinese scholars that Chinese literature is isolated and excluded from the "World." Therefore it is held that Chinese literature should go to the "World" and be accepted by the "World." Consequently the major method of the study of the literary relationship between China and the West is influence study and reception of comparative literature.Nevertheless,it is possible that we overrate the influence from the West and underrate increasingly internationalized community that will lead people from different places to confront similar phenomenon in the same age and draw similar conclusion of reflection without direct influence from each other.I call the study of the similarity relationship the study of internationality.

Abstract:Hu Shi's literary relationship with western literature began very early,and is embodied as his relatively comprehensive,stable and mature understanding of the characteristics of western literature,and its value of reference and demonstration for Chinese literature,in addition to usual text reading and translation,criticism and studies. How to build a modern new literature with western literature as an example was also elaborated in Hu Shi's letters and diaries,in which exhibited Hu Shi's two basic judgments about western literature — a new notion of literature and literary history,and the oneness of language and literature,both of which were applied to his thoughts about the construction of modern Chinese literature and his reevaluation of ancient Chinese literature.

Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. It describes the potential space for exploration of the classical Chinese research and argues for the"necessary tension"between facts and theory.

Abstract:In the current fields of international comparative literature and literary theory,talking about world literature has become a cutting edge theoretic topic,which is certainly closely related to the strong influence of globalization on and its reaction to culture and literature.Western scholars,inspired by Goethe's conjecture of world literature,usually regard it as a process of literary production,circulation and translation in a cosmopolitan way.To the present author,however,to define world literature should take into both universality and relativity into consideration,or more specifically,considering both canonicity and readability of literature.Although Goethe's conjecture of world literature was largely benefited from his limited knowledge and dynamic understanding of Oriental literature,including Chinese literature,the marginal position of Chinese literature in the broad context of global culture and world literature has by no means been changed.There are full reasons to account for this,among which are:the influence of the long-standing Orientalism,the disability and even absence of translation and the current shrinking of literary market in the West.Even so,if we join hands with our Western colleagues,we may well accelerate the movement of Chinese literature toward the world and make it an unseparate part of world literature.

Abstract:The China of today has been shaped partly by two centuries of Bible translations and by an even longer period of Christian propagation. This essay looks at the socio-political impact of the Bible on twentieth- and twenty-first-century China. Far beyond the religious sphere, China’s society and culture absorbed biblical narratives and teaching, spread through channels that have been circuitous, ambiguous, and controversial. This essay seeks to offer insights as to what extent the Bible has become part and parcel of Chinas’ socio-political references and controversies. The variety of social settings, political stances and hermeneutical strategies has characterized biblical readings from the time the Bible was introduced into China, and particularly since it became part of the general debate on national essence and modernity.

Abstract:The recent history of comparative literature in China is closely linked with the appropriation of Western theory by Chinese scholars. In the following we would like to relate some aspects of that history – which very much mirrors the fraught history of China’s relationship with the West – and survey some of the related developments in literary theory and criticism, bearing in mind that one of the problems still facing the introduction of Western theory in China today is the perceived fundamental, or ‘essential’, difference of Eastern and Western thought, and hence of their cultures and literatures. Modern and contemporary Western literary and cultural theories began entering China on a large scale around 1980. Prior to that, the field of literary studies in China had for decades seen political criticism guided and dominated by another vein of Western thought, namely Marxist theory, which reached its ultra-‘Left’ extreme during the Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1966 to 1976. During that period, literary theory and criticism were treated only as political tools for reinforcing the struggle of the proletariat against the bourgeoisie.2 After the end of the Cultural Revolution, China adopted a policy of economic reform, opening the country up to the outside world. Alongside the flow – if not torrent – of Western capital and commodities, various brands of Western literary theory and criticism entered China. All these schools, whether fashionable (such as feminism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis) or out of fashion (such as New Criticism, phenomenology, structuralist narratology) in the West, were invariably new and contemporary to Chinese scholars. This large-scale introduction into China of Western theories from the 1980s on is primarily to be accounted for by the country’s new-found post-‘Cultural Revolution’ interest in modernity and modernization. Abstract:Western scholars of Chinese narrative concern themselves with many areas of traditional Chinese narrative and fiction criticism. Yet studies of the basic concepts of Chinese narrative categorized in both Chinese context and Western contexts attest their different points of departure. Chinese narrative is, to some degree, heterogeneous when compared to most of Western narrative theories. Western scholars' evaluation of Chinese narrative leaves no doubt that Western narrative theories can partly fit in with modern Chinese narrative, but less with the studies of traditional Chinese narrative. In this sense, a fairly coherent interpretation of Chinese narrative can be made based on Chinese narrative tradition rather than Western theoretical assumptions. Through a brief review of Western scholars' viewpoints on traditional Chinese narrative, fiction criticism and the relationship between Buddhism and Chinese narrative tradition, the author examines the differentiation of the speciality of Chinese narrative from that of Western narrative theories.

Abstract:The application of the methodology of Chinese ancient literary theory, construction and inheritance innovation is an issue that researchers have been thinking about. It is generally to focus on four aspects to achieve this goal. The first is to establish the concept of large discipline, build multidimensional theoretical research sys-tem, to achieve the purpose of interdisciplinary exchange. This also relates to interdisciplinary communication, subject integration and theoretical imagination, academic community and academic development in professional re-search. Secondly, the study uses the research methods and ideas which combine the theoretical principle with the concrete literary theory. Thirdly, it should notice the inheritance and innovation of specific methodology of ancient Chinese literary theory. Finally, it needs to pay attention to the practical application and specific attention in the study of ancient Chinese literary theory. That is, maintaining the principles of “value-free” and “objectivity” for“cultural science” study.
