Abstract:The main goal of the present lectures is to outline the key particle interactions and energy loss mechanisms in the Galactic medium that high-energy particles are subject to. These interactions are an important ingredient entering the cosmic ray propagation equation, contributing to shape cosmic ray spectra. They also source the so-called secondary species, like gamma rays, neutrinos, "fragile" nuclei not synthesised in stars, and antiparticles, all routinely used as diagnostic tools in a multi-messenger context. These lectures are complementary to Denise Boncioli's ones, focusing instead on processes happening at ultra-high energies in the extragalactic environment. They include propaedeutic material to Felix Aharonian's and, to some extent, Stefano Gabici's and Carmelo Evoli's lectures.

Abstract:The study of high energy cosmic rays is a diversified field of observational and phenomenological physics addressing questions ranging from shock acceleration of charged particles in various astrophysical objects, via transport properties through galactic and extragalactic space, to questions of dark matter, and even to those of particle physics beyond the Standard Model including processes taking place in the earliest moments of our Universe. After decades of mostly independent evolution of nuclear-, particle- and high energy cosmic ray physics we find ourselves entering a symbiotic era of these fields of research. Some examples of interrelations will be given from the perspective of modern Particle-Astrophysics and new major experiments will briefly be sketched.

Abstract:The origin of cosmic rays is one of the major unresolved astrophysical questions. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond the Standard Model and processes taking place at the earliest moments of our Universe. Furthermore, many new experimental activities promise a strong increase of statistics at the highest energies and a combination with $\gamma-$ray and neutrino astrophysics will put strong constraints on these theoretical models. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations indicate that charged ultra-high energy cosmic rays can also be used as probes of large scale magnetic fields whose origin may open another window into the very early Universe. We give an overview over this quickly evolving research field.

Abstract:By a short tour through the exciting field of very high-energy and ultra high-energy cosmic rays studies, a brief review is given about the current questions approached, in particular by the KASCADE experiment and the Pierre Auger project. The present status of the investigations of the knee region of the cosmic ray spectrum by KASCADE is presented and open problems are discussed.

Abstract:Investigations of the origin of cosmic rays are presented. Different methods are discussed: studies of cosmic gamma rays of energy from 30 MeV to about 10^15 eV (since photons point to their places of origin), studies of the mass composition of cosmic rays (because it reflects source morphology), and studies of cosmic rays with energy above 10^19 eV (for these are the highest energies observed in nature).

Abstract:The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, and their behavior in astrophysical sources, remains an open question. Recently, new ways to address this question have been made possible by the observation of a new astrophysical messenger, namely neutrinos. The IceCube telescope has detected a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV energy range, likely produced in astrophysical sources accelerating cosmic rays, and more recently it has reported on a few candidate individual neutrino sources. Future experiments will be able to improve on these measurements quantitatively, by the detection of more events, and qualitatively, by extending the measurement into the EeV energy range. In this paper, we review the main features of the neutrino emission and sources observed by IceCube, as well as the main candidate sources that could contribute to the diffuse neutrino flux. As a parallel question, we review the status of high-energy neutrinos as a probe of Beyond the Standard Model physics coupling to the neutrino sector.

Abstract:Cosmic high energy neutrinos are inextricably linked to the origin of cosmic rays which is one of the major unresolved questions in astrophysics. Abstract:These notes summarize the lectures about "Cosmic-ray propagation in extragalactic space and secondary messengers", focusing in particular on the interactions of cosmic-ray particles with the background photons in the Universe, including nuclear species heavier than hydrogen, and on the analytical computation of the expected cosmic-ray fluxes at Earth. The lectures were held at the Course 208 of the International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi" on "Foundations of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics", in Varenna (Como, Italy) from June 23rd to June 29th, 2022. These notes are complementary to the content of the lectures held by Pasquale Dario Serpico at the same school.

Abstract:Cosmic-rays with energies exceeding 10^{19} eV are referred to as Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). The sources of these particles and their acceleration mechanism are unknown, and for many years have been the issue of much debate. The first part of this review describes the main constraints, that are implied by UHECR observations on the properties of candidate UHECR sources, the candidate sources, and the related main open questions. In order to address the challenges of identifying the UHECR sources and of probing the physical mechanisms driving them, a "multi-messenger" approach will most likely be required, combining electromagnetic, cosmic-ray and neutrino observations. The second part of the review is devoted to a discussion of high energy neutrino astronomy. It is shown that detectors, which are currently under construction, are expected to reach the effective mass required for the detection of high energy extra-Galactic neutrino sources, and may therefore play a key role in the near future in resolving the main open questions. The detection of high energy neutrinos from extra-Galactic sources will not only provide constraints on the identity and underlying physics of UHECR sources, but may furthermore provide information on fundamental neutrino properties.

Abstract:Here we discuss the latest developments in the debate, where the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray particles come from. In this brief review, we emphasize the predictions that necessarily follow from the various concepts proposed. We discuss both sources and propagation, and spend some space on the by now most conservative model, giant radio galaxies and their hot spots and jets, because it allows more steps in the reasoning to be checked, and is more tightly constrained than any other model. It has survived about forty years of debate already. We summarize the task ahead of us at the end, including the development of new technologies to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, e.g., with the radio emission of air showers, which may lead to an alternative to the fluorescence detectors with their small duty cycle. Due to HiRes, AUGER, and the plans for EUSO, the future is bright, and the ultra high energy cosmic ray particles may yet allow us to explore new physics.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:These notes were originally prepared as additional material for the lessons I have given at the summer school Gamma-ray Astrophysics and Multifrequency: Data analysis and astroparticle problems, organized by the Department of Physics of the University of Perugia (Italy) on July 3-7, 2006. The necessarily limited time of the lessons forced to a drastic selection of the topics and, therefore, I have thought it was useful to complete the slides of the presentation with the notes you find in these few pages. These notes are a kind of ``link'' between the theoretical approach of the University lessons and the practice of the real use. During these years, I have seen that this material is useful for students that are beginning their thesis on research topics based on the use and the interpretation of data from X- and gamma-ray satellites. Therefore, I have thought to update the content of these notes, to translate them into English and to post on arXiv, in order to make them available to a larger public, hoping to give a useful help to other beginners. Since the public is basically composed of graduating students, I have assumed a well-grounded knowledge of basic astrophysics, the principles of instrumentation for physical sciences and the statistical analysis. Therefore, I have focused my notes on the practical issues and given some bibliographic references, just some advice, just to draw the attention on some points that are too much detailed for a university lesson. Nevertheless, the bibliography should be also a good starting point for those who want to further explore these topics.

Abstract:We begin with a brief overview of highest-energy cosmic ray data, and the experiments which will perform neutrino astronomy. We then discuss two particle physics aspects of neutrinos. They are possible long-lifetime decay of the neutrino, and a measurement of the neutrino-nucleon cross-section at a CMS energy orders of magnitude beyond what can be achieved with terrestrial accelerators. Measurement of an anomalously large neutrino cross-section would indicate new physics (e.g. low string-scale, extra dimensions, precocious unification), while a smaller than expected cross-section would reveal an aspect of QCD evolution. We then discuss aspects of neutrino-primary models for the extreme-energy (EE) cosmic ray data. Primary neutrinos in extant data are motivated by the directional clustering at EE reported by the AGASA experiment. We discuss the impact of the strongly-interacting neutrino hypothesis on lower-energy physics via dispersion relations, the statistical significance of AGASA directional clustering, and the possible relevance of the Z-burst mechanism for existing EE cosmic ray data.

Abstract:High energy Astroparticles include Cosmic Ray, gamma ray and neutrinos, all of them coming from the universe. The origin and production, acceleration and propagation mechanisms of ultrahigh-energy CR (up to $10^{20}$ eV) are still unknown. Knowledge on particle interactions taking place at those energies, useful for studying current theories on particle physics, can be obtained only from measurements of high energy astroparticles. In the present document some techniques on data analysis of mass composition of UHECR with the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. The relevance of the muon component of air showers produced by the primary CR, as well as some low energy simulations of that component, are explained.

Abstract:Our Universe is described jointly by Einstein's relativity principle and thequantum principle; there the existence of the smallest units of matter, such aselectrons, neutrinos, quarks, and photons, is well established and the smallestunits of matter are described by the Standard Model. Based on these, we have aclear picture for the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR's),for energies greater than E > 10^13 eV but less than E < 10^26 eV,in the cosmic medium of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and of the cosmicbackground neutrinos (CBν's). We find that the CMB plays a pivot role inthis energy range, so that the observed "knee(s)" and the "ankle" could beunderstood in reasonable terms. What we might observe at the energy near10^25 eV', the so-called "W^± bursts" or "Z^0 bursts", is brieflydiscussed. Meanwhile, in the early Universe, the CBν's, in view of the tinyneutrino mass, gave rise to the clustering phenomenon, resulting in a neutrinohalo attached to each visual ordinary-matter object, such as the Earth, theSun, and stars - with the PeV neutrinos near the surface of the Fermi-Diracsphere of the neutrino halo of the Earth playing the most fundamental role.

Abstract:We introduce neutrino astronomy from the observational fact that Nature accelerates protons and photons to energies in excess of 10^{20} and 10^{13} eV, respectively. Although the discovery of cosmic rays dates back close to a century, we do not know how and where they are accelerated. We review the facts as well as the speculations about the sources. Among these gamma ray bursts and active galaxies represent well-motivated speculations because these are also the sources of the highest energy gamma rays, with emission observed up to 20 TeV, possibly higher. We discuss why cosmic accelerators are also expected to be cosmic beam dumps producing high-energy neutrino beams associated with the highest energy cosmic rays. Cosmic ray sources may produce neutrinos from MeV to EeV energy by a variety of mechanisms. The important conclusion is that, independently of the specific blueprint of the source, it takes a kilometer-scale neutrino observatory to detect the neutrino beam associated with the highest energy cosmic rays and gamma rays. The technology for commissioning such instruments exists.
