Abstract:The main theme of this paper is that singular automorphic forms on classical groups are given by theta series liftings. We establish several inequalities relating the automorphic multiplicities of a given representation and that of its abstract theta lift. Our methods allow one to lift noncuspidal, square integrable automorphic forms when the dual pair involved is in the stable range. In this way we construct new families of singular automorphic forms, many of which are clearly unipotent. In fact, starting from one-dimensional representations and repeating the procedure (of lifting in the stable range), one may obtain all automorphic forms which are quadratic unipotent in the sense of Moeglin.

Abstract:In a recent paper A.Beardon and I.Short proposed to use chains of tangent horocycles as an extended tool describing continued fractions. We review the origin of such construction from the Moebius transformations point of view. Related descriptions with chains of orthogonal horocycles emerged as a result. The approach is extended to several dimensions in a way which is compatible to the early proposition of A.Beardon based on Clifford algebras.
Realizing cyclic linear transformations as Frobenius elements in the Galois groups of $q$-polynomials over function fields

Abstract:We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.

Abstract:A cubic Galois polynomial is a cubic polynomial with rational coefficients that defines a cubic Galois field. Its discriminant is a full square and its roots $x_1,x_2,x_3$ (enumerated in some order) are real. There exists (and only one) quadratic polynomial $q$ with rational coefficients such that $q(x_1)=x_2, q(x_2)=x_3, q(x_3)=x_1$. The polynomial $r=q(q)\text{ mod } p$ cyclically permutes roots of $p$ in the opposite order: $r(x_1)=x_3, r(x_3)=x_2, r(x_2)=x_1$. We prove that there exist a unique Galois polynomial $p_1$ and a unique Galois polynomial $p_2$ such that the polynomial $q$ cyclically permutes roots of $p_1$ and the polynomial $r$ do the same with roots of $p_2$. Polynomials $p$ and $p_1$ (and also $p$ and $p_2$) will be called \emph{coupled}. Two polynomials are \emph{linear equivalent}, if one of them is obtained from another by a linear change of variable. By $C(p)$ we denote the class of polynomials, linear equivalent to $p$. The coupling realizes a bijection between classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_1)$ (and between classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_2)$). Classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_1)$ (and classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_2)$) will be called \emph{adjacent}. We consider a graph: its vertices -- are classes of the linear equivalency and two vertices are connected by an edge, if the corresponded classes are adjacent. Connected components of this graph will be called \emph{superclasses}. In this work we give a description of superclasses.

Fourier transform in cyclic groups

Abstract:On a cyclic group of prime order, the non-trivial Dirichlet characters together with their Fourier transforms have constant modulus outside 0 and vanish at 0. Answering a question of H. Cohn, we construct new functions with these properties. The proof relies on Floer homology. We also apply this method to the biunimodular functions problem.

Abstract:Several authors have studied homomorphisms from first homology groups of modular curves to the second K-group of a cyclotomic ring or a modular curve X. These maps send Manin symbols in the homology groups to Steinberg symbols of cyclotomic or Siegel units. We give a new construction of these maps and a direct proof of their Hecke equivariance, analogous to the construction of Siegel units using the universal elliptic curve. Our main tool is a 1-cocycle from GL_2(Z) to the second K-group of the function field of a suitable group scheme over X, from which the maps of interest arise by specialization.

Abstract:Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $\phi$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $\phi$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $\Gamma = G \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Non-torsion algebraic cycles on the Jacobians of Fermat quotients

Abstract:We study the Abel-Jacobi image of the Ceresa cycle $W_{k, e}-W_{k, e}^-$, where $W_{k, e}$ is the image of the $k$th symmetric product of a curve $X$ with a base point $e$ on its Jacobian variety. For certain Fermat quotient curves of genus $g$, we prove that for any choice of the base point and $k \leq g-2$, the Abel-Jacobi image of the Ceresa cycle is non-torsion. In particular, these cycles are non-torsion modulo rational equivalence.

A Moebius inversion formula to discard tangled hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:Recent literature on Weil-Petersson random hyperbolic surfaces has met a consistent obstacle: the necessity to condition the model, prohibiting certain rare geometric patterns (which we call tangles), such as short closed geodesics or embedded surfaces of short boundary length. The main result of this article is a Moebius inversion formula, allowing to integrate the indicator function of the set of tangle-free surfaces in a systematic, tractable way. It is inspired by a key step of Friedman's celebrated proof of Alon's conjecture. We further prove that our tangle-free hypothesis significantly reduces the number of local topological types of short geodesics, replacing the exponential proliferation observed on tangled surfaces by a polynomial growth.

Hecke and Galois Properties of Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Non-reductive special cycles and Twisted Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma

Abstract:We consider arithmetic analogs of the relative Langlands program and applications of new non-reductive geometry. Firstly, we introduce mirabolic special cycles, which produce special cycles on many Hodge type Rapoport-Zink spaces via pullbacks e.g. Kudla--Rapoport cycles. Secondly, we formulate arithmetic intersection problems for these cycles and formulate a method of arithmetic induction. As a main example, we formulate arithmetic twisted Gan--Gross--Prasad conjectures on unitary Shimura varieties and prove a key twisted arithmetic fundamental lemma using mirabolic special cycles, arithmetic inductions, and Weil type relative trace formulas.

Abstract:Let (k1,k2,k3,k4) be a quartet of cyclic cubic number fields sharing a common conductor c=pqr divisible by exactly three prime(power)s p,q,r. For those components k of the quartet whose 3-class group Cl(3,k) = Z/3Z x Z/3Z is elementary bicyclic, the automorphism group M = Gal(F(3,2,k)/k) of the maximal metabelian unramified 3-extension of k is determined by conditions for cubic residue symbols between p,q,r and for ambiguous principal ideals in subfields of the common absolute 3-genus field k* of k1,k2,k3,k4. With the aid of the relation rank d2(M), it is decided whether M coincides with the Galois group G = Gal(F(3,infinity,k)/k) of the maximal unramified pro-3-extension of k.

Non-vanishing of Ceresa and Gross--Kudla--Schoen cycles associated to modular curves

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Explicit arithmetic Eisenstein cocycles: the toric case

Abstract:We construct cocycles for $GL_n(\mathbb{Q})$ valued in cup products of units on the $n$-dimensional algebraic torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$ over an arbitrary DVR, viewed in Milnor $K$-theory or motivic cohomology. We show how various combinatorially-defined complexes encoding linear algebraic data capture the structure of these cup products inside motivic complexes, and examine some properties of the resulting classes. This generalizes work of Sharifi and Venkatesh in the case $n=2$, in which case pullbacks of the resulting cocycle to an arithmetic base are of central importance in the Sharifi conjectures.

Counting elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny over $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:Using methods from analytic number theory, for $m > 5$ and for $m = 4$, we obtain asymptotics with power-saving error terms for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to quadratic twist over the rational numbers. For $m > 5$, we then apply a Tauberian theorem to achieve asymptotics with power saving error for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to isomorphism over the rational numbers.

Abstract:Deligne and Goncharov constructed a neutral tannakian category of mixed Tate motives unramified over $\mathbb{Z}[\mu_N,1/N]$. Brown and Hain--Matsumoto computed the depth 2 quadratic relations of the motivic Galois group of this category for $N = 1$. We take the first steps in generalizing their results to all $N \ge 1$ by realizing the generators of the motivic Galois group by derivations on the Lie algebra of the unipotent fundamental group of a restriction of the Tate elliptic curve. This representation is compatible with a natural identification of the odd rational $K$-groups of the rings $\mathbb{Z}[\mu_N,1/N]$ with spaces of $\Gamma_1(N)$ Eisenstein series, thus inducing a natural action of the prime to $N$ part of the Hecke algebra on the $K$-groups. We establish these results by first showing the inclusion of $\mathbb{P}^1 - \{0,\mu_N,\infty\}$ into the nodal elliptic curve with a cyclic subgroup of order $N$ removed induces a morphism of mixed Tate motives on unipotent fundamental groups and then by computing the periods of the limit mixed Hodge structure of an elliptic polylogarithm variation of MHS over the universal elliptic curve of $Y_1(N)$.

Tautological projection for cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:We define a tautological projection operator for algebraic cycle classes on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$: every cycle class decomposes canonically as a sum of a tautological and a non-tautological part. The main new result required for the definition of the projection operator is the vanishing of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle over the boundary $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g\smallsetminus \mathcal{A}_g$ of any toroidal compactification $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$. We prove the vanishing by a careful study of residues in the boundary geometry. The existence of the projection operator raises many natural questions about cycles on $\mathcal{A}_g$. We calculate the projections of all product cycles $\mathcal{A}_{g_1}\times \ldots \times \mathcal{A}_{g_\ell}$ in terms of Schur determinants, discuss Faber's earlier calculations related to the Torelli locus, and state several open questions. The Appendix contains a conjecture about the projection of the locus of abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we introduce the notion of "cyclic stratum" of a Frobenius manifold $M$. This is the set of points of the extended manifold $\mathbb C^*\times M$ at which the unit vector field is a cyclic vector for the isomonodromic system defined by the flatness condition of the extended deformed connection. The study of the geometry of the complement of the cyclic stratum is addressed. We show that at points of the cyclic stratum, the isomonodromic system attached to $M$ can be reduced to a scalar differential equation, called the "master differential equation" of $M$. In the case of Frobenius manifolds coming from Gromov-Witten theory, namely quantum cohomologies of smooth projective varieties, such a construction reproduces the notion of quantum differential equation. In the second part of the paper, we introduce two multilinear transforms, called "Borel-Laplace $(\boldsymbol \alpha,\boldsymbol\beta)$-multitransforms", on spaces of Ribenboim formal power series with exponents and coefficients in an arbitrary finite dimensional $\mathbb C$-algebra $A$. When $A$ is specialized to the cohomology of smooth projective varieties, the integral forms of the Borel-Laplace $(\boldsymbol \alpha,\boldsymbol\beta)$-multitransforms are used in order to rephrase the Quantum Lefschetz Theorem. This leads to explicit Mellin-Barnes integral representations of solutions of the quantum differential equations for a wide class of smooth projective varieties, including Fano complete intersections in projective spaces. In the third and final part of the paper, as an application, we show how to use the new analytic tools, introduced in the previous parts, in order to study the quantum differential equations of Hirzebruch surfaces. This finally leads to the proof of Dubrovin Conjecture for all Hirzebruch surfaces.

Tautological and non-tautological cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The tautological Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ was defined and calculated by van der Geer in 1999. By studying the Torelli pullback of algebraic cycles classes from $\mathcal{A}_g$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}}$ of genus $g$ of curves of compact type, we prove that the product class $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]\in \mathsf{CH}^{5}(\mathcal{A}_6)$ is non-tautological, the first construction of an interesting non-tautological algebraic class on the moduli spaces of abelian varieties. For our proof, we use the complete description of the the tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ in genus 6 conjectured by Pixton and recently proven by Canning-Larson-Schmitt. The tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ has a 1-dimensional Gorenstein kernel, which is geometrically explained by the Torelli pullback of $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]$. More generally, the Torelli pullback of the difference between $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}]$ and its tautological projection always lies in the Gorenstein kernel of $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}})$. The product map $\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ is a Noether-Lefschetz locus with general Neron-Severi rank 2. A natural extension of van der Geer's tautological ring is obtained by including more general Noether-Lefschetz loci. Results and conjectures related to cycle classes of Noether-Lefschetz loci for all $g$ are presented.
