Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:Patrick Moss (1947--2024) had two distinct lives as a mathematician. The first was as a ring theorist in the late 1970s, in which he worked with Ginn and Lenagan as a student. After a long career as an inspirational mathematics teacher, Patrick completed a doctorate under my supervision in 2003. This led to a second mathematical life in arithmetic dynamics almost forty years after his first period of research. This is a short obituary of his remarkable contributions, several of which have stimulated further research.

Abstract:Richard A. Litherland was born in 1953 in England. He received his PhD at Trinity College in Cambridge in 1979 and moved to the USA in 1983. He had a lengthy and distinguished career as a professor of mathematics and researcher of low-dimensional topology, based primarily at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge until his untimely passing in November 2022. In this paper we (Rick's family and students) recount some memories of Rick, his life and his mathematics.

Abstract:My thesis describes the life and work of the mathematician Major Percy Alexander MacMahon (1854-1929). His early life as as a soldier in the Royal Artillery and the events which led to him embarking on a career in mathematical research and teaching are dealt with in the first two chapters. Succeeding chapters explain the work in invariant theory and partition theory which brought him to the attention of the British mathematical community and eventually resulted in a Fellowship of the Royal Society, the presidency of the London Mathematical Society, and the award of three prestigious mathematical medals and four honorary doctorates. The development and importance of his recreational mathematical work is traced and discussed. MacMahon's career in the Civil Service as Deputy Warden of the Standards at the Board of Trade is also described. Throughout the thesis, his involvement with the British Association for the Advancement of Science and other scientific organisations is highlighted. The thesis also examines possible reasons why MacMahon's work, held in very high regard at the time, did not lead to the lasting fame accorded to some of his contemporaries. Details of his personal and social life are included to give a picture of MacMahon as a real person working hard to succeed in a difficult context.

Abstract:This is a slightly edited translation of a paper in Dutch which appeared in Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde (5) 25 (2024), No.2, 87-90 on the occasion of I.G. Macdonald's death in 2023, and aimed at a very broad mathematical audience. First we review some of Macdonald's most important older results. Then we focus on the period 1985-1995 when Macdonald often visited the Netherlands and there was much interaction between his work, notably the Macdonald polynomials, and the work by the authors. We end with some glimpses about Macdonald as a person.

Since two rather comprehensive autobiographical accounts and two long biographical interviews already exist, the present work focusses on Davis's scientific achievements, including work on computably enumerable sets, universal Turing machines, the hyperarithmetical hierarchy, neural networks, Hilbert's Tenth Problem, and automated reasoning.

Abstract:On April 22 2015, Murray Marshall was invited by Igor Klep and Victor Vinnikov to talk in the special session on "Operator Theory, Real Algebraic Geometry, and Moment Problems" that they co-organised for IWOTA 2015 in Tbilisi, Georgia, July 6--10. This invitation to an IWOTA edition was considered by the organisers as long overdue, given Marshall's important contributions to Real Algebraic Geometry in general, and to the multi-dimensional Moment Problem in particular. Marshall declined on April 27th writing: "Dear Victor, Thanks very much for the invitation. I am sorry but I must decline. The reason is that I don't enjoy traveling as much as I used to. North America or Europe is about the maximum distance I am willing to dealwith. I hope you are well. Murray." This response startled us, as Marshall has always been a grand traveler when it came to mathematics. Our fears were alas confirmed; Marshall passed away just a few days later. In July, I held a talk at that session myself on joint work with Marshall, and was asked by the editors of the proceedings volume to write this mathematical obituary.

Abstract:Alan Baker, Fields Medallist, died on 4th February 2018 in Cambridge England after a severe stroke a few days earlier. In 1970 he was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress in Nice on the basis of his outstanding work on linear forms in logarithms and its consequences. Since then he received many honours including the prestigious Adams Prize of Cambridge University, the election to the Royal Society (1973) and the Academia Europaea; and he was made an honorary fellow of University College London, a foreign fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, a foreign fellow of the National Academy of Sciences India, an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In this article we survey Alan Baker's achievements.

Abstract:Roger Carter (1934--2022) was a very well known mathematician working in algebra, representation theory and Lie theory. He spent most of his mathematical career in Warwick. Roger was a great communicator of mathematics: the clarity, precision and enthusiasm of his lectures delivered in his beautiful handwriting were hallmark features recalled by numerous students and colleagues. His books have been described as marvelous pieces of scholarship and service to the general mathematical community. We both met Roger early in our careers, and were encouraged and influenced by him~ -- ~and his lovely sense of humour. This text is our tribute, both to his mathematical achievements, and to his kindness and generosity towards his students, his colleagues, his collaborators, and his family.

Abstract:In this obituary, the life and work of Professor James Albert Lock is summarized (if it is possible to summarize a life spanning more than seven decades and work presented in about 200 communications, including 160 refereed papers). The charming, peaceful and friendly personality of "Jim" (as he wished/liked to be called by his relatives, family and friends) is best described by personal recollections from the authors of this obituary. Personalities like Jim's make us still go on believing in the chances of the human species, whatever would be the foolish agitation of the world.

Abstract:THE news of the death of Michel Chasles, perhaps the oldest and best-known mathematician in Europe, will be everywhere learned with deep regret. For the fifty-five years over which his writings extend he has devoted himself with persistent industry to the history of geometry and to the perfection of those geometrical methods with which his name will be always associated. The “Apergu historique sur l'Origine et le Développement des Méthodes en Géométrie,” which in fact forms an elaborate history of the subject from the time of Thales and Pythagoras to the beginning of the present century, is the best known of his works; it was first published in 1837, and a second edition appeared only a few years ago. His restoration of the Porisms of Euclid was published in 1860. The last great work of Chasles related to the investigation of the number of conies satisfying any five conditions: the special method which he invented for these researches, termed by him geometrical substitution, involved the consideration of the characteristics of systems of conies, i.e. of the numbers of conies satisfying four common conditions and (1) passing through an assumed point; (2) touching an assumed line.

Abstract:Frederick William Gehring was a hugely influential mathematician who spent most of his career at the University of Michigan. Gehring's major research contributions were to Geometric Function Theory, particularly in higher dimensions $\IR^n$, $n\geq 3$. This field he developed in close coordination with colleagues, primarily in Finland, over three decades 1960 -- 1990. Gehring's seminal work drove this field forward initiating important connections with geometry and nonlinear partial differential equations, while addressing and solving major problems. During his career Gehring received many honours from the international mathematical community. He was invited three times to address the International Congress of Mathematicians, at Moscow in 1966, at Vancouver in 1974, and at Berkeley (a plenary lecture) in 1986. He was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Helsinki (1979), the University of Jyväskylä (1990), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (1997). In 1989, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. This is an extended obituary of his life and mathematical contributions.
