Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Torsion bounds for a fixed abelian variety and varying number field

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. For a finite extension $L/K$, the cardinality of the group $A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ of torsion points in $A(L)$ can be bounded in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. We study the smallest real number $\beta_A$ such that for any finite extension $L/K$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we have $|A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}| \leq C \cdot [L:K]^{\beta_A+\varepsilon}$, where the constant $C$ depends only on $A$ and $\varepsilon$ (and not $L$). Assuming the Mumford--Tate conjecture for $A$, we will show that $\beta_A$ agrees with the conjectured value of Hindry and Ratazzi. We also give a similar bound for the maximal order of a torsion point in $A(L)$.

We investigate upper bounds for $h_\ell(K)$ when $K$ is quadratic or cubic, particularly in the case in which the discriminant of $K$ is smooth. Abstract:The list of all groups that can appear as torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over number fields of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, is not completely determined. However, the list of groups $\Phi^{\infty}(d)$, $d=4,5,6$, that can be realized as torsion subgroups for infinitely many non-isomorphic elliptic curves over these fields are known. We address the question of which torsion subgroups can arise over a given number field of degree $d$. In fact, given $G\in\Phi^{\infty}(d)$ and a number field $K$ of degree $d$, we give explicit criteria telling whether $G$ is realized finitely or infinitely often over $K$. We also give results on the field with the smallest absolute value of its discriminant such that there exists an elliptic curve with torsion $G$. Finally, we give examples of number fields $K$ of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, over which the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion is bounded from above.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:Fix a number field k , integers , and a prime p . For all , we prove strong unconditional upper bounds on the r th moment of -torsion in the ideal class groups of degree p extensions of k and of degree n -extensions of k , improving upon results of Ellenberg, Pierce and Wood as well as GRH-conditional results of Frei and Widmer. For large r , our results are comparable with work of Heath-Brown and Pierce for imaginary quadratic extensions of . When , our results are new even for the family of all quadratic extensions of , leading to an improved upper bound for the count of degree p -extensions over (where is the dihedral group of order 2 p ).

Torsion in $p$-adic étale cohomology: remarks and conjectures

Abstract:Let $C$ be a complete algebraically closed extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{O}_C$. By the work of Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze, it is known that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is proper, the length of the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_C$ is bounded above by the length of the torsion in the crystalline cohomology of its special fiber. In this note, we focus on the non-proper case and observe that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ can even be expressed as a functor of the special fiber, unlike in the proper case. As a consequence, we show that, surprisingly, if $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology groups of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ have finite torsion subgroups. We discuss further applications and propose conjectures predicting the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of a broader class of rigid-analytic varieties over $C$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$.

Boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of products of varieties

Abstract:Let k be a field finitely generated over its prime subfield. We prove that the quotient of the Brauer group of a product of varieties over k by the Brauer groups of factors has finite exponent. The bulk of the proof concerns p-primary torsion in characteristic p. Our approach gives a more direct proof of the boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of an abelian variety, as recently proved by D'Addezio. We show that the transcendental Brauer group of a Kummer surface over k has finite exponent, but can be infinite when k is an infinite field of positive characteristic. This answers a question of Zarhin and the author.

Abstract:We study the problem of determining the groups that can arise as the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over a fixed quadratic field, building on work of Kamienny-Najman, Krumm, and Trbović. By employing techniques to study rational points on curves developed by Bruin and Stoll, we determine the possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for all squarefree $d$ with $|d| < 800$, improving on the previously known range of $-5 < d < 26$. We use our computations to study the validity of a conjecture of Granville concerning how many twists of a given hyperelliptic curve admit a nontrivial rational point.

Torsion phenomena for zero-cycles on a product of curves over a number field

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number which is split in an imaginary quadratic field k. Let \mathfrak{p} be a place of k above p. Let k_\infty be the unique Z_p-extension of k which unramified outside of \mathfrak{p}, and let K_\intfy be a finite extension of k_\infty, abelian over k. In case p \notin {2,3}, we prove that the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of global units modulo elliptic units coincides with the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of the p-class groups. Our approach uses Euler systems, which were first used in this context by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://K.Rubin" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. If p \in {2,3}, we obtain a divisibility relation, up to a certain constant.

Bounds on the number of torsion points of given order on curves embedded in their jacobians

Abstract:Working over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic we study, for integers $N\geq 2$ and $g\geq 2$, the set of points of order dividing $N$ lying on an irreducible smooth proper curve of genus $g$ embedded in its jacobian using a fixed base point. We discuss bounds on its cardinality and describe an efficient method for computing the set. Our method uses wronskians similar to those used in the study of Weierstrass points and the strength of our bounds is related to whether or not a certain multiple of the curve is contained in the negative of the theta divisor. Several examples are discussed. This generalizes our previous work [<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1216/rmj.2023.53.357" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>] dealing with the case of hyperelliptic curves embedded in their jacobian using a Weierstrass point as base point.

Torsion invariants of complexes of groups

Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.
