Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-cylotomic imaginary quadratic field of class number 1 and $E/K$ is an elliptic curve with $E(K)[2]\simeq \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \oplus\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}.$ In this article, we determine the torsion groups that can arise as $E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ where $L$ is a quadratic extension of $K.$

Abstract:Let $K$ be a quadratic number field and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $K$ such that $E[2] \not\subseteq E(K).$ In this paper, we study the effect of quadratic base change on $E(K)_{\text{tor}}.$ Moreover, for a given elliptic curve $E/K$ with prescribed torsion group over $K,$ (no restriction on its $2$-torsion part) we describe a fast algorithm to find all quadratic extensions $L/K$ in which $E(K)_{\text{tor}} \subsetneq E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ and describe $E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ in each such case. In particular, we determine the growth of $E(K)_{\text{tor}}$ upon quadratic base change when $K$ is any quadratic cyclotomic field, which completes the earlier work of the second author.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p>3$ be a prime such that $p-1$ is not divisible by $3,4,5,7,11$. In this article we classify the groups that can arise as $E(\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p))_{\text{tors}}$ up to isomorphism. The method illustrates techniques for eliminating possible structures that can appear as a subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}.$

Abstract:For a quadratic field $\mathcal{K}$ without rationally defined CM, we prove that there exists of a prime $p_{\mathcal{K}}$ depending only on $\mathcal{K}$ such that if $d$ is a positive integer whose minimal prime divisor is greater than $p_{\mathcal{K}}$, then for any extension $L/\mathcal{K}$ of degree d and any elliptic curve $E/\mathcal{K}$, we have $E\left(L\right)_{\operatorname{tors}} = E\left(\mathcal{K}\right)_{\operatorname{tors}}$. By not assuming the GRH, this is a generalization of the results by Genao, and Gonález-Jiménez and Najman.

Abstract:The list of all groups that can appear as torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over number fields of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, is not completely determined. However, the list of groups $\Phi^{\infty}(d)$, $d=4,5,6$, that can be realized as torsion subgroups for infinitely many non-isomorphic elliptic curves over these fields are known. We address the question of which torsion subgroups can arise over a given number field of degree $d$. In fact, given $G\in\Phi^{\infty}(d)$ and a number field $K$ of degree $d$, we give explicit criteria telling whether $G$ is realized finitely or infinitely often over $K$. We also give results on the field with the smallest absolute value of its discriminant such that there exists an elliptic curve with torsion $G$. Finally, we give examples of number fields $K$ of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, over which the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion is bounded from above.

Torsion phenomena for zero-cycles on a product of curves over a number field

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$.

Abstract:For any elliptic curve E defined over the rationals with complex multiplication and for every prime p, we describe the image of the mod p Galois representation attached to E. We deduce information about the field of definition of torsion points of these curves, in particular we classify all cases where there are torsion points over Galois number fields not containing the field of definition of the CM.

Abstract:We study torsion subgroups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM) defined over number fields which admit a real embedding. We give a complete classification of the groups which arise up to isomorphism as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve defined over a number field of odd degree: there are infinitely many. Restricting to the case of prime degree, we show that there are only finitely many isomorphism classes. More precisely, there are six "Olson groups" which arise as torsion subgroups of CM elliptic curves over number fields of every degree, and there are precisely 17 "non-Olson" CM elliptic curves defined over a prime degree number field.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with CM by $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$, such that $E$ is defined by a model over $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f})$, where $j_{K,f}=j(E)$. In this article, we classify the values of $N\geq 2$ and the elliptic curves $E$ such that (i) the division field $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f},E[N])$ is an abelian extension of $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f})$, and (ii) the $N$-division field coincides with the $N$-th cyclotomic extension of the base field.

Abstract:We prove several results on torsion points and Galois representations for complex multiplication (CM) elliptic curves over a number field containing the CM field. One result computes the degree in which such an elliptic curve has a rational point of order $N$, refining results of Silverberg. Another result bounds the size of the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve with CM by a nonmaximal order in terms of the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve with CM by the maximal order. Our techniques also yield a complete classification of both the possible torsion subgroups and the rational cyclic isogenies of a $K$-CM elliptic curve $E$ defined over $K(j(E))$.

Abstract:Let $E: y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ be an elliptic curve with full $2$-torsion group, where $a$ and $b$ are coprime integers and $2(a^2+b^2)$ is a square. Assume that the $2$-Selmer group of $E$ has rank two. We characterize all quadratic twists of $E$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate groups $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$, under certain conditions. We also obtain a distribution result of these elliptic curves.

Abstract:We establish the existence of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobians possess rational torsion points of order $N$ where $N=4g^2+2g-2$ or $4g^2+ 2g -4$. For $N=2g^2+7g+1$, we introduce a $1$-parameter family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational torsion point of order $N$ on their Jacobians.

It has been shown by the author and Lozano-Robledo that $\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f},E[N])/\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f}))$ is only abelian for $N=2,3$, and $4$. Let $p$ be a prime and let $n\geq 1$ be an integer. In this article, we bound the commutator subgroups of $\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])/\mathbb{Q})$ and classify the maximal abelian extensions contained in $\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])/\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(\zeta_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that determines the set of positive integers $N$ for which there is an $\mathcal{O}$-CM elliptic curve $E$ admitting a cyclic, $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$-rational $N$-isogeny.

Growth of torsion groups of elliptic curves upon base change from number fields

Abstract:Given a number field $F_0$ that contains no Hilbert class field of any imaginary quadratic field, we show that under GRH there exists an effectively computable constant $B:=B(F_0)\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ for which the following holds: for any finite extension $L/F_0$ whose degree $[L:F_0]$ is coprime to $B$, one has for all elliptic curves $E_{/F_0}$ that the $L$-rational torsion subgroup $E(L)[\textrm{tors}]=E(F_0)[\textrm{tors}]$. This generalizes a previous result of González-Jiménez and Najman over $F_0=\mathbb{Q}$. Towards showing this, we also prove a result on relative uniform divisibility of the index of a mod-$\ell$ Galois representation of an elliptic curve over $F_0$. Additionally, we show that the main result's conclusion fails when we allow $F_0$ to have rationally defined CM, due to the existence of $F_0$-rational isogenies of arbitrarily large prime degrees satisfying certain congruency conditions.

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.
