Abstract:<p>The desirable properties when constructing collections of subspaces often include the algebraic constraint that the projections onto the subspaces yield a resolution of the identity like the projections onto lines spanned by vectors of an orthonormal basis (the so-called tightness condition) and the geometric constraint that the subspaces form an optimal packing of the Grassmannian, again like the one-dimensional subspaces spanned by vectors in an orthonormal basis. In this article a generalization of related constructions which use known packings to build new configurations and which appear in numerous forms in the literature is given, as well as the characterization of a long list of desirable algebraic and geometric properties which the construction preserves. Another construction based on subspace complementation is similarly analyzed. While many papers on subspace packings focus only on so-called equiisoclinic or equichordal arrangements, attention is also given to other configurations like those which saturate the orthoplex bound and thus are optimal but lie outside of the parameter regime where equiisoclinic and equichordal packings can occur.</p>

Abstract:It is often of interest to identify a given number of points in projective space such that the minimum distance between any two points is as large as possible. Such configurations yield representations of data that are optimally robust to noise and erasures. The minimum distance of an optimal configuration not only depends on the number of points and the dimension of the projective space, but also on whether the space is real or complex. For decades, Neil Sloane's online Table of Grassmannian Packings has been the go-to resource for putatively or provably optimal packings of points in real projective spaces. Using a variety of numerical algorithms, we have created a similar table for complex projective spaces. This paper surveys the relevant literature, explains some of the methods used to generate the table, presents some new putatively optimal packings, and invites the reader to competitively contribute improvements to this table.

Abstract:This paper describes a numerical method for finding good packings in Grassmannian manifolds equipped with various metrics. This investigation also encompasses packing in projective spaces. In each case, producing a good packing is equivalent to constructing a matrix that has certain structural and spectral properties. By alternately enforcing the structural condition and then the spectral condition, it is often possible to reach a matrix that satisfies both. One may then extract a packing from this matrix. This approach is both powerful and versatile. In cases where experiments have been performed, the alternating projection method yields packings that compete with the best packings recorded. It also extends to problems that have not been studied numerically. For example, it can be used to produce packings of subspaces in real and complex Grassmannian spaces equipped with the Fubini--Study distance; these packings are valuable in wireless communications. One can prove that some of the novel configurations constructed by the algorithm have packing diameters that are nearly optimal.

Abstract:We consider the following rectangle packing problem: Given a set of rectangles, each of which is associated with a profit, we are requested to pack a subset of the rectangles into a bigger rectangle to maximize the total profit of rectangles packed. The rectangles may not overlap and may or may not be rotated. This problem is strongly NP-hard even for packing squares with identical profits. A simple (3 + ε)-approximation algorithm is presented. We further improve the algorithm by showing a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. A number of restricted cases are also considered.

Abstract:Equiangular tight frames are examples of Grassmannian line packings for a Hilbert space. More specifically, according to a bound by Welch, they are minimizers for the maximal magnitude occurring among the inner products of all pairs of vectors in a unit-norm frame. This paper is dedicated to packings in the regime in which the number of frame vectors precludes the existence of equiangular frames. The orthoplex bound then serves as an alternative to infer a geometric structure of optimal designs. We construct frames of unit-norm vectors in K-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces that achieve the orthoplex bound. When K−1 is a prime power, we obtain a tight frame with K2+1 vectors and when K is a prime power, with K2+K−1 vectors. In addition, we show that these frames form weighted complex projective 2-designs that are useful additions to maximal equiangular tight frames and maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases in quantum state tomography. Our construction is based on Singer's family of difference sets and the related concept of relative difference sets.

Abstract:We study the rigidity properties of Grassmannian frames: basis-like sets of unit vectors that correspond to optimal Grassmannian line packings. It is known that Grassmannian frames characterized by the Welch bound must satisfy the restrictive geometric and spectral conditions of being both equiangular and tight; however, less is known about the necessary properties of other types of Grassmannian frames. We examine explicit low-dimensional examples of orthoplectic Grassmannian frames and conclude that, in general, the necessary conditions for the existence of Grassmannian frames can be much less restrictive. In particular, we exhibit a pair of $5$-element Grassmannian frames in $\mathbb C^2$ manifesting with differently sized angle sets and different reconstructive properties (ie, only one of them is a tight frame). This illustrates the complexity of the line packing problem, as there are cases where a solution may coexist with another solution of a different geometric and spectral character. Nevertheless, we find that these "twin" instances still respect a certain rigidity, as there is a necessary trade-off between their tightness properties and the cardinalities of their angle sets. The proof of this depends on the observation that the traceless embedding of Conway, Hardin and Sloane sends the vectors of a unit-norm, tight frame to a zero-summing set on a higher dimensional sphere. In addition, we review some of the known bounds for characterizing optimal line packings in $\mathbb C^2$ and discuss several examples of Grassmannian frames achieving them.

Abstract:After investigating the $3$-dimensional case [35], we continue to address and close the problems of optimal ball and horoball packings in truncated Coxeter orthoschemes with parallel faces that exist in $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\overline{\mathbb{H}}^n$ up to $n=6$. In this paper, we determine the optimal ball and horoball packing configurations and their densities for the aforementioned tilings in dimensions $4 \leq n \leq 6$, where the symmetries of the packings are derived from the considered Coxeter orthoscheme groups. Moreover, for each optimal horoball packing, we determine the parameter related to the corresponding Busemann function, which provides an isometry-invariant description of different optimal horoball packing configurations.

Deformations of complete Pick spaces

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Pandey, Ofek, and Shalit on the one hand and deformation theory on the other, we study the Grassmannian of $n$-dimensional multiplier-coinvariant subspaces of the Drury-Arveson space. We show that this space admits a natural map to the symmetrized polyball that induces an isomorphism between the configuration space of $n$ points in the ball and the subspace of projection onto spaces spanned by $n$ distinct kernels. We discuss the tautological bundle on our Grassmannian and the corresponding operator algebra bundle. We construct examples of bundles of complete Pick spaces from homogeneous hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{B}_d$. Along with these bundles, we construct examples of Cowen-Doulas tuples of operators from the compressed Arveson $d$-shift.

Efficient Submodular Function Maximization under Linear Packing Constraints

Abstract:We study the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular set function subject to linear packing constraints. An instance of this problem consists of a matrix $A \in [0,1]^{m \times n}$, a vector $b \in [1,\infty)^m$, and a monotone submodular set function $f: 2^{[n]} \rightarrow \bbR_+$. The objective is to find a set $S$ that maximizes $f(S)$ subject to $A x_{S} \leq b$, where $x_S$ stands for the characteristic vector of the set $S$. A well-studied special case of this problem is when $f$ is linear. This special case captures the class of packing integer programs. Our main contribution is an efficient combinatorial algorithm that achieves an approximation ratio of $\Omega(1 / m^{1/W})$, where $W = \min\{b_i / A_{ij} : A_{ij} > 0\}$ is the width of the packing constraints. This result matches the best known performance guarantee for the linear case. One immediate corollary of this result is that the algorithm under consideration achieves constant factor approximation when the number of constraints is constant or when the width of the constraints is sufficiently large. This motivates us to study the large width setting, trying to determine its exact approximability. We develop an algorithm that has an approximation ratio of $(1 - \epsilon)(1 - 1/e)$ when $W = \Omega(\ln m / \epsilon^2)$. This result essentially matches the theoretical lower bound of $1 - 1/e$. We also study the special setting in which the matrix $A$ is binary and $k$-column sparse. A $k$-column sparse matrix has at most $k$ non-zero entries in each of its column. We design a fast combinatorial algorithm that achieves an approximation ratio of $\Omega(1 / (Wk^{1/W}))$, that is, its performance guarantee only depends on the sparsity and width parameters.

Abstract:The $2$-packing number $\rho_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the cardinality of a largest $2$-packing of $G$ and the open packing number $\rho^{\rm o}(G)$ is the cardinality of a largest open packing of $G$, where an open packing (resp. $2$-packing) is a set of vertices in $G$ no two (closed) neighborhoods of which intersect. It is proved that if $G$ is bipartite, then $\rho^{\rm o}(G\Box K_2) = 2\rho_2(G)$. For hypercubes, the lower bounds $\rho_2(Q_n) \ge 2^{n - \lfloor \log n\rfloor -1}$ and $\rho^{\rm o}(Q_n) \ge 2^{n - \lfloor \log (n-1)\rfloor -1}$ are established. These findings are applied to injective colorings of hypercubes. In particular, it is demonstrated that $Q_9$ is the smallest hypercube which is not perfect injectively colorable. It is also proved that $\gamma_t(Q_{2^k}\times H) = 2^{2^k-k}\gamma_t(H)$, where $H$ is an arbitrary graph with no isolated vertices.

Abstract:Recently, Freedman [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.00295" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.00295">arXiv:2301.00295</a>] introduced the idea of packing a maximal number of links into a bounded region subject to geometric constraints, and produced upper bounds on the packing number in some cases, while commenting that these bounds seemed far too large. We show that the smallest of these "extravagantly large" bounds is in fact sharp by constructing, for any link, a packing of exponentially many copies as a function of the available volume. We also produce improved and generalized upper bounds.

Abstract:Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs. We say that $P$ is an $H$-packing of $G$ if $P$ is a set of edge-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$. An $H$-packing $P$ is maximal if there is no other $H$-packing of $G$ that properly contains $P$. Packings of maximum cardinality have been studied intensively, with several recent breakthrough results. Here, we consider minimum cardinality maximal packings. An $H$-packing $P$ is clumsy if it is maximal of minimum size. Let $cl(G,H)$ be the size of a clumsy $H$-packing of $G$. We provide nontrivial bounds for $cl(G,H)$, and in many cases asymptotically determine $cl(G,H)$ for some generic classes of graphs $G$ such as $K_n$ (the complete graph), $Q_n$ (the cube graph), as well as square, triangular, and hexagonal grids. We asymptotically determine $cl(K_n,H)$ for every fixed non-empty graph $H$. In particular, we prove that $$ cl(K_n, H) = \frac{\binom{n}{2}- ex(n,H)}{|E(H)|}+o(ex(n,H)),$$ where $ex(n,H)$ is the extremal number of $H$. A related natural parameter is $cov(G,H)$, that is the smallest number of copies of $H$ in $G$ (not necessarily edge-disjoint) whose removal from $G$ results in an $H$-free graph. While clearly $cov(G,H) \le cl(G,H)$, all of our lower bounds for $cl(G,H)$ apply to $cov(G,H)$ as well.

Mixed volumes of zonoids and the absolute value of the Grassmannian

Abstract:Zonoids are Hausdorff limits of zonotopes, while zonotopes are convex polytopes defined as the Minkowski sums of finitely many segments. We present a combinatorial framework that links the study of mixed volumes of zonoids (a topic that has applications in algebraic combinatorics) with the study of the absolute value of the Grassmannian, defined as the image of the Grassmannian under the coordinate-wise absolute value map. We use polyhedral computations to derive new families of inequalities for n zonoids in dimension d, when (n,d)=(6,2) and (6,3). Unlike the classical geometric inequalities, originating from the Brunn-Minkowski and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities, the inequalities we produce have the special feature of being Minkowski linear in each of the n zonoids they involve.

Maximality and completeness of orthogonal exponentials on the cube

Abstract:It is possible to have a packing by translates of a cube that is maximal (i.e.\ no other cube can be added without overlapping) but does not form a tiling. In the long running analogy of packing and tiling to orthogonality and completeness of exponentials on a domain, we pursue the question whether one can have maximal orthogonal sets of exponentials for a cube without them being complete. We prove that this is not possible in dimensions 1 and 2, but is possible in dimensions 3 and higher. We provide several examples of such maximal incomplete sets of exponentials, differing in size, and we raise relevant questions. We also show that even in dimension $1$ there are sets which are spectral (i.e. have a complete set of orthogonal exponentials) and yet they also possess maximal incomplete sets of orthogonal exponentials.

Abstract:In this paper, extending the recent work of authors with Calles Loperena and Dimitrijević Blagojević, we give a general and complete treatment of a problem of partition of mass assignments with prescribed arrangements of hyperplanes on Euclidean vector bundles. Using a new configuration test map scheme, as well as an alternative topological framework, we are able to reprove known results, extend them to arbitrary bundles as well as to put various types of constraints on the solutions. Moreover, the developed topological methods allow us to give new proofs and extend results of Guth and Katz, Schnider, and Soberón and Takahashi. In this way we place all these results under one ``roof''.

Constructive Approximation

Abstract:Parastichies are spiral patterns observed in plants and numerical patterns generated using golden angle method. We generalize this method using Markoff theory and the theory of product of linear forms, to obtain a packing theory on Riemannian manifolds of general dimensions n with a locally diagonalizable metric, including the Euclidean spaces. From the theory, point packings on a plane with logarithmic spirals and on a 3D ball (3D analogue of the Vogel spiral) are newly obtained. We prove that the method is applicable to generate almost uniformly distributed point sets on any smooth Riemannian surfaces in a local sense. We also discuss how to extend it to a global packing in some special cases including the case of packing on a disc such as the Vogel spiral. The packing density is bounded below by approximately 0.7 for surfaces and 0.38 for 3-manifolds under the most general assumption.

Minimal Submanifolds and Waists of Locally Symmetric Spaces

Abstract:We study the higher expansion properties of locally symmetric spaces, with a particular focus on octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. We show that codimension two minimal submanifolds of compact octonionic locally symmetric spaces must have large volume, at least linear in the volume of the ambient space. As a corollary we prove linear waist inequalities for octonionic hyperbolic manifolds in codimension two and construct the first locally symmetric examples of power-law systolic freedom. We also show that any codimension two submanifold of small volume can be homotoped to a lower dimensional set. We use this to prove that branched covers of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds are stable in the sense of Dinur-Meshulam and to establish a uniform lower bound on the non-abelian Cheeger constants of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. In a more general setting, we prove that maps from locally symmetric spaces to low dimensional euclidean spaces admit fibers whose fundamental group has large exponent of growth. We show as a consequence that cocompact lattices in $SL_n(\mathbb{R})$ have property $ FA_{\lfloor n/8\rfloor-1}$: any action on a contractible $CAT(0)$ simplicial complex of dimension at most $ \lfloor n/8\rfloor -1$ has a global fixed point.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a subset in $\mathbb{F}_p^2$ and $S$ be a subset in the special linear group $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ or the $1$-dimensional Heisenberg linear group $\mathbb{H}_1(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We define $S(E):= \bigcup_{\theta \in S} \theta (E)$. In this paper, we provide optimal conditions on $S$ and $E$ such that the set $S(E)$ covers a positive proportion of all elements in the plane $\mathbb{F}_p$. When the sizes of $S$ and $E$ are small, we prove structural theorems that guarantee that $|S(E)|\gg |E|^{1+\epsilon}$ for some $\epsilon>0$. The main ingredients in our proofs are novel results on algebraic incidence-type structures associated with the groups, in which energy estimates play a crucial role. The higher-dimensional version will also be discussed in this paper.
