Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications
Abstract:In the present study, a combined experimental and numerical study is conducted to investigate the three-dimensional film cooling using forward and reverse injection over a corrugated surface. The experiments are performed to analyze the fluid flow and heat transfer phenomenon of the film cooling and to validate the numerical model under laboratory conditions (i.e. low temperature). Infrared thermography is used to estimate the temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficient. The numerical study is extended for a wide range of operating parameters at actual operating conditions of the afterburner liner. The outcome of numerical results shows promising results with reverse injection. The issue of kidney vortices with forward injection is mitigated with reverse injection. The reverse injection shows vortices in the plane of corrugation which improves the lateral spreading of coolant. A significant improvement in coolant coverage is reported over conventional forward injection, and the maximum improvement is 146%. Finally, a thermal stress analysis is conducted for film-cooled corrugated liners. The reverse injection shows promising results in terms of coolant coverage which reduces the overall temperature of the corrugated liner, hence thermal stress is significantly reduced.
