Abstract:In this paper, we show that those sequential products which were proposed by Liu and Shen and Wu in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 42}, 185206 (2009), J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 42}, 345203 (2009)] are just unitary equivalent to the sequential product $A\circ B=A^{\frac{1}{2}}BA^{\frac{1}{2}}$.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of a sharp lower bound for the rank of the Hadamard product of positive semidefinite matrices. Our proof uses standard matrix analysis tools and involves the rank of one factor and the Kruskal rank of the other. It leads to a new understanding of when the Hadamard exponential of a positive semidefinite matrix can be singular.

Abstract:For all integers n≥1 and k≥2, the Hadamard product v1★⋯★vk of k elements of Kn+1 (with K being the complex numbers or real numbers) is the element v∈Kn+1 which is the coordinate-wise product of v1,...,vk (introduced by Cueto, Morton, and Sturmfels for a model in Algebraic Statistics). This product induces a rational map h:Pn(K)k⤏Pn(K). When K=C, k=2 and Xi(C)⊂Pn(C), i=1,2 are irreducible, we prove four theorems for the case dimX2(C)=1, three of them with X2(C) as a line. We discuss the existence (non-existence) of a cancellation law for ★-products and use the symmetry group of the Hadamard product. In the second part, we work over R. Under mild assumptions, we prove that by knowing X1(R)★⋯★Xk(R), we know X1(C)★⋯★Xk(C). The opposite, i.e., taking and multiplying a set of complex entries that are invariant for the complex conjugation and then seeing what appears in the screen Pn(R), very often provides real ghosts, i.e., images that do not come from a point of X1(R)×⋯×Xk(R). We discuss a case in which we certify the existence of real ghosts as well as a few cases in which we certify the non-existence of these ghosts, and ask several open questions. We also provide a scenario in which ghosts are not a problem, where the Hadamard data are used to test whether the images cover the full screen.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the product of resolvents of a finite number of monotone vector fields on a Hadamard manifold to approximate both the singular points of their sum and a common singular point among them. For the sum of any finitely many maximal monotone vector fields, with some suitable assumptions, it is proved that the obtained sequence of the iterative method is convergent. The paper ends with some examples and applications.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the multivariate version of Christol's theorem about algebraic power series with coefficients in finite fields, as well as of its extension to perfect ground fields of positive characteristic obtained independently by Denef and Lipshitz, Sharif and Woodcok, and Harase. Our proof is elementary, effective, and allows for much sharper estimates. We discuss various applications of such estimates, in particular to a problem raised by Deligne concerning the algebraicity degree of reductions modulo $p$ of diagonals of multivariate algebraic power series with integer coefficients.

A Note on Approximate Hadamard Matrices

Abstract:A Hadamard matrix is a scaled orthogonal matrix with $\pm 1$ entries. Such matrices exist in certain dimensions: the Hadamard conjecture is that such a matrix always exists when $n$ is a multiple of 4. A conjecture attributed to Ryser is that no circulant Hadamard matrices exist when $n > 4$. Recently, Dong and Rudelson proved the existence of approximate Hadamard matrices in all dimensions: there exist universal $0< c < C < \infty$ so that for all $n \geq 1$, there is a matrix $A \in \left\{-1,1\right\}^{n \times n}$ satisfying, for all $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$, $$ c \sqrt{n} \|x\|_2 \leq \|Ax\|_2 \leq C \sqrt{n} \|x\|_2.$$ We observe that, as a consequence of the existence of flat Littlewood polynomials, circulant approximate Hadamard matrices exist for all $n \geq 1$.

Abstract:We provide elementary proofs of Lemmas 7.1 and 7.4 appearing in "The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture and the Little Prince", by B. Kloeckner and G. Kuperberg. The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:Tomita-Takesaki theory associates a positive operator called the "modular operator" with a von Neumann algebra and a cyclic-separating vector. Tomita's theorem says that the unitary flow generated by the modular operator leaves the algebra invariant. I give a new, short proof of this theorem which only uses the analytic structure of unitary flows, and which avoids operator-valued Fourier transforms (as in van Daele's proof) and operator-valued Mellin transforms (as in Zsidó's and Woronowicz's proofs). The proof is similar to one given by Bratteli and Robinson in the special case that the modular operator is bounded.

Projections in Toeplitz algebra

Abstract: Motivated by Barr{\'\i}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. This provides a class of nontrivial projections in Toeplitz algebra.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{B} (X)$ be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space $X$. In this note, we show that a lemma used in the proof of the main result of [ Taghavi and Hosseinzadeh, linear and Multilinear algebra (2013) 1285-1292.] has an incorrect proof. Then, instead of such a lemma, we provide two elementary lemmas to obtain a proof of Taghavi and Hosseinzadeh's main result free of errors.

Abstract:This article continues the study of the Hadamard–Bergman operators in the unit disk of the complex plane. These operators arose as a natural generalization of orthogonal projections and represent an integral realization of multiplier operators. However, the study of operators in integral form offers a number of advantages in the context of the application of the theory of integral operators as well as in the study of certain function spaces such as holomorphic Hölder functions to which the multiplier theory does not apply. As a main result, we prove boundedness theorems for the Hadamard–Bergman operators and variable Hadamard–Bergman operators using the technique of operators with homogeneous kernels earlier developed in real analysis.

Notes on a conjecture by Paszkiewicz on an ordered product of positive contractions

Abstract:Paszkiewicz's conjecture asserts that given a decreasing sequence $T_1\ge T_2\ge \dots$ of positive contractions on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$, the product $S_n=T_nT_{n-1}\cdots T_1$ converges in the strong operator topology. In these notes, we give an equivalent, more precise formulation of his conjecture. Moreover, we show that the conjecture is true for the following two cases: (1) $1$ is not in the essential spectrum of $T_n$ for some $n\in \mathbb{N}$. (2) The von Neumann algebra generated by $\{T_n\mid n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ admits a faithful normal tracial state. We also remark that the analogous conjecture for the weak convergence is true.

Abstract:Matrix product states play an important role in quantum information theory to represent states of many-body systems. They can be seen as low-dimensional subvarieties of a high-dimensional tensor space. In these notes, we consider two variants: homogeneous matrix product states and uniform matrix product states. Studying the linear spans of these varieties leads to a natural connection with invariant theory of matrices. For homogeneous matrix product states, a classical result on polynomial identities of matrices leads to a formula for the dimension of the linear span, in the case of 2x2 matrices. These notes are based partially on a talk given by the author at the University of Warsaw during the thematic semester "AGATES: Algebraic Geometry with Applications to TEnsors and Secants", and partially on further research done during the semester. This is still a preliminary version; an updated version will be uploaded over the course of 2023.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain an equivalent condition to the existence of a common fixed point of a given family of nonexpansive mappings defined on a Hadamard space. Moreover, if the space is bounded, we show that the generating process of the approximate sequence by a specific projection method will stop in finite steps if there is no common fixed point. It is a significant advantage to reveal the nonexistence of a common fixed point in a finite time.
